Webb observes winds driven by black hole jets in more than ten different regions of a nearby galaxy
In a new study using data from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), Prof. Dasyra of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece, and her team provided insights into how supermassive black holes affect galaxy evolution by driving interstellar gas out of galactic disks.
In a paper that was recently accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal, and is available on arXiv, the team presented cycle 1 JWST data of the nearby galaxy IC5063.
A supermassive black hole at the center of this fascinating nearby galaxy ejects jets, which are collimated beams of particles traveling at high velocities, near the speed of light. By employing JWST's Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI), the researchers were able to capture high-resolution images and spectra from a region surrounding the center of IC5063 that spans a distance equivalent to ~1/3 of the distance between our sun and the center of our own galaxy.
One of the most striking outcomes of this research is the identification of more than 10 distinct regions with winds, nearly doubling the known areas where gas is being expelled from the galaxy's nucleus following the impact of black-hole jets.
Some of these winds are moving at velocities that exceed what would be necessary to escape the galaxy's gravitational pull—a result proving that black hole jets can delay star formation by depleting a galaxy from the gas that would be needed to collapse and form stars. These outflows also exhibit diverse structures and characteristics, such as differences in the temperature of the gas they entrain.
This study also sheds light on the past jet activity of IC5063. The researchers discovered gas in bow shocks, i.e., bow-shaped structures that form when jet particles plow through the interstellar medium at supersonic speeds, leading to the compression, heating, and acceleration of their surrounding gas. These shocks are analogous to the sonic booms produced by aircraft that exceed the sound speed in the Earth's atmosphere.
The extent of the detected bow shocks is vast, spanning ~300 pc or 6 billion times the distance between the JWST and Earth. Surprisingly, their location is well beyond the region of the nucleus of IC5063 where the black hole jets are detected by their radio emissions. This finding indicates that jets may have interacted with the surrounding gas in the past and then faded away, in a recurrent activity of particle ejection from the vicinity of the supermassive black hole that continues to shape the galaxy today.
Intriguingly, the bow shocks were discovered thanks to their very bright molecular hydrogen (H₂) emission, reflecting the energy deposition from the jet to the dense gas. As the jets stir this gas, the associated turbulence and heating can both hinder and promote the collapse of clouds toward the birth of new stars.
Why does this matter? Over time, such phenomena can lead to significant changes in a galaxy's structure. Studying them in galaxies like IC5063 gives scientists the opportunity to witness how black holes could have similarly altered the growth of galaxies in the past, during epochs when much larger quantities of gas existed in galaxies and the effect was more dramatic.

TON 618, imaged by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 9 (DR9).
One of the things we like to talk about at Camp Omni is astronomy! Every session we have a Night Under The Stars, a chance to camp out and learn some cool facts about space.
Among the many cool things about space is TON 618, the location of a supermassive black hole. The mass of TON 618's black hole is estimated to be at 66 billion solar masses. That means it would take 66 billion suns to make up TON 618'S black hole. Isn't that crazy?

what initially inspired you to write killing games? sorry if that's worded weird 😭
Well, I've sort of answered this question in this post here.
Although that ask is more to do with 'what inspired you to write a crossover fangan', I have a bit more to say on the killing game aspect.
While my idea for writing a killing game myself did come from DR9 (by PurpleDrank on AO3), I think I also just like writing dark and morbid things? Okay understand that is not in a weird way (lol), but like how any average fanfic writer likes putting their favourite characters through hell and back. I think due to writing these killing games actually, I'm much more of a fan of angst than I was before (a bad or good thing well that's up to you to decide).
Also, getting free range to make my own cases where the characters involved are whoever I want from anything I like is just. it's like walking into a sweet shop. and seeing all the things you can eat. and then suffering the stomach ache you receive in indulging in too much candy (and then double that bc 2 killing games)

do you like homogenic by björk ? i’ve been listening to her a lot a lately but others i’ve spoken to think it’s her weakest album, coming to tumblr’s björk specialist for opinions <3
YES I LOVE IT its possibly my favourite but its hard to pick favourites when literally everything is beautiful in its own way. and thats crazy cos i tend to hear that either vespertine or homogenic is her best album! usual rankings are something like vespertine-> homogenic-> post-> debut-> medulla -> vulnicura-> utopia -> biophilia -> volta -> dr9/DITD soundtrack. here's the tiermaker.com community ranking, fantano's ranking, and my gun-to-my-head ranking
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
homogenic is just so beautiful and thunderous and it feels like standing on a foggy cliff with a storm rolling in, the sky is dark and grey and blue, the ocean is beneath you and the ocean spray is like mist in the air you are breathing in, and that stoic kind of nature is all around you, very liminal. bjork in general is so natural and earthly which she herself says so often but homogenic just fits my personal atmostphere. jóga was my first favourite song when i was doing my deep dive :D its my fave bjork song of all time possibly? that or unison from vespertine. also the alexander mcqueen cover..... beloved

"How Dare She": Amy-Lin Slezak Tackles Judgment Head-On Amy-Lin Slezak’s new single, “How Dare She,” kicks down the door with a question that’s less query, more accusation hurled across the digital divide. Slezak, who comes dusted with the rigour of opera and theatre training and is now navigating the independent release currents after raising a family, certainly knows about delivering a line with intent. And this one lands squarely. https://open.spotify.com/album/2p9AmZOeCrrsGm4HafrEqi?si=noRc0H-DR9-kRLxdD2Qkog The track pulses with a straightforward rock-pop energy, a vehicle for confronting that baffling, teeth-grinding resentment sometimes reserved for women who colour outside the lines, succeed a little too loudly, or simply occupy space without asking permission. It’s the sound of someone tapping their foot impatiently, arms crossed, baffled by another’s audacity to simply be. [caption id="attachment_59433" align="alignnone" width="1022"] "How Dare She": Amy-Lin Slezak Tackles Judgment Head-On[/caption] You can hear the sneer Slezak is singing back at, the collective gasp from the cheap seats when a woman builds her own stage instead of waiting to be cast. The guitars churn – sometimes they remind me, strangely, of the sound of wind chimes getting unexpectedly aggressive in a rising storm – carrying this defiant energy. It’s not just frustration, though; there's an uplifting quality, a refusal to be drowned out by the background static of judgment, particularly the kind that festers online. Slezak isn't just chronicling the negativity; she's stepping over it. The song channels the exhaustion but converts it into fuel. It’s a sharp, unapologetic assertion: "Yes, I did. And what of it?" What, indeed, is so fundamentally unsettling about a woman carving her own path? Follow Amy-Lin Slezak on Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok

So uhhhhh what Inspired you to do DR69 in the first place? Crossover Fangans are quite frequent as of now ( such as Cartoons In Danganronpa, totally not promoting one of my current favourite on going Fangans (; ) but nah on a serious note, just really curious to the upbringing of 69 and how the whole thought process with it's conception went yknow?
Ah yes, my origin story (or well the fic’s at least lol)
I did mention this in another post, but one day while I was scrolling through danganronpa fics (terrible decision, I know) I stumbled across a fic called DR9: Despair’s Counterattack (by PurpleDrank). Now, just by looking at the absurd but hilarious cast list, I was infatuated with the idea of placing random characters into a killing game. I knew of fangans that existed such as SDRA2, but I hadn’t really been exposed to the idea of crossover killing games until that fic.
I don’t think anyone knows this, but since I was young, I was obsessed with crossovers. And I mean obsessed. Not like those 2 TV shows having a crossover special kind of interest, no, like slapping characters from separate medias I enjoyed and just thinking about them doing stuff together. From the most trauma-torn grunge middle-aged man to a cartoon horse to a random anime girl just hanging out because… why not? It’s free, and no one can stop you.
And believe it or not, that hasn’t changed.
For fun, I was just like, “lol, what if I wrote down my own cast of characters that might be funny to see interact because it’s not like anyone’s gonna read it anyway.” Once I assembled the cast, it spiralled from there. Oh, who would be the protagonist? How would these characters look in my current artstyle? What would the first floor of the school look like? At that point I decided to abandon my current fixation on a set of old OCs and focus on creating this fic. Unlike DR9, I wanted to actually draw the images myself, seeing as how photo editing could only go so far with the intro cards and not for more dynamic CGs (still respect the use of it though cuz it does make things more visually engaging imo).
I remember trying to figure out how to produce my own murder cases. I was very interested to try and use ideas related to the characters involved in the case, which is why for the first case, the BDA image is a reference to a gag from spongebob, and the method of murder is directly tied to the murderer’s iconic ability in his game. I also remember drawing small diagrams and jotting down the truth bullets that could expand the case such as accounts in a notebook I had. This process has actually been used a bit for DR96 too — just using different mediums to help plan can really refresh your mind if you’re having trouble figuring things out.
I didn’t think the fic would get as popular as it did. Back then, I’m certain crossover fangans were not a huge thing, and definitely not as saturated as they are now. It was fun having a small following, but as things grew, it definitely was exhilarating as it was intimidating. But I don’t regret going through with it at all, as I’ve seen first hand how it’s inspired many, allowed people to connect and form friendships and even open people up to other medias.
So all in all, I’m just a big crossover fan and danganronpa is a strangely good medium for it, and makes for a pretty gruesome one at that lol
