She peers at me from behind her mug and shakes her head. “Simon, she broke up with you.” “I know,” I reply with a sigh, taking another biscuit and dunking it in my tea. “So what’s the point in going all the way to Watford to see her?” Penny asks, scrunching up her nose at the absurdity of my plan.

One evening, after they had sex, Draco leaned over him and kissed him slowly, his lips soft and his touch full of longing, the kiss turning languid and sweet. He looked into Harry’s eyes and brushed his curls back, then just looked at him in that intense way he had sometimes, as if he really wanted to say something but couldn’t find the words for once. “What?” Harry asked in a whisper. Draco didn’t say anything, but he kissed him again, a sensual brush of lips and tongue that left Harry reeling for more. “Do you want to go again?” Draco shook his head, but Harry still ran his fingers along the lovely curve of Draco’s back, feeling his soft skin under his fingertips as he traced his spine and then lingered on Draco’s naked buttocks.

Oh that’s such a wonderful ask, thank you! I’m sorry for the late reply, the 10 fics came easily bc whenever I see those titles I get immediately transported back to where I was and what I felt reading them for the first time. But putting into words what exactly makes them heartkick-y for me was a bit more challengeging. It’s usually a “when you feel it you know it” kind of thing (and quite literally too, as sometimes it manifests as an actual physical reaction!) but more often than not the fic just clicks for me and there’s no rationale behind it. As Clarice Lispector said: “I suppose that understanding myself is not a question of intelligence but of feeling. It either touches you, or it doesn't."

Anyhoo, I tried my best to keep this short and sweet but since I’ve written individual recs for almost all these fics, I thought I’d include them too :) thanks again, this was super fun! And I’d love to read about your picks as well 👀

as someone who’s never been into kid fic and family dynamics, this was a punch on the solar plexus and rearranged my whole view about this trope. I was deeply moved by Harry’s longing for a family of his own and despite not having or wanting kids, this still felt really cathartic and changed me in a way I can’t quite explain.

Analyzing the few villains I actually like

Inspired by my Draco reddit post from months ago that got some hate because apparently Draco is utterly irredeemable and the worst-ever villain according to some so-called fans on a Drarry subreddit of all places….. lol…. Some fans were literally mad at me for this post bc apparently I was glorifying Draco or something idfuckn know (it wasn’t even a Draco post… It was literally an obvious Drarry post on a Drarry subreddit… like???):

They were bringing up all the bad things he did that i was apparently overlooking……………… First of all, I know he’s not perfect, i know he’s a bigot. But like ???? Should that be all i focus on? He is far more 3 dimensional than that. And as if I don’t love WAY WORSE actual villains lol……. Sometimes I can’t with Reddit. :i

So I decided to compile a list of ALL the villains* I liked.

*I left out very obvious antiheroes/non-villains, like Light Yagami from Death Note or Venom.

These are literally the only "villains" i like though, since I just don’t tend to like bad characters, which was why originally before reading the books, I did not like Draco becos the movies just made him look like a simple bully.

MY VILLIANS LIST (incl Draco, not in any particular order):

1. Draco Malfoy from Harry Potter:

Kill count: NONE (the ONLY one with no kills on this list…. Irredeemable my ass.)

Redeemed: YES. <33 Tbh, in the original 7 books, Draco is more a tragic antagonist than antihero, since antiheroes make bad choices for a bigger goal or personal gain. Draco's not like that—his story is more about fear and trying to survive, not purpose or redemption.

But apparently some supposed Reddit "Draco fans" & JKR think he is irredeemable lol. :V He’s literally just a troubled teenager. (There’s another troubled teen on #4 of this list that makes Draco look like a literal saint.)

What did he do: Was a giant bigot (in childhood only). Accidentally hurt people in his quest to kill a single person or else his family dies. He could not even go through with killing in the end because bb felt bad. :’| (Irredeemable where?)

Why i like him: He is just such a complex character, smart, canonically a good person deep down (unicorn core wand), only misguided by his family, & so terribly gay for Harry Potter LOL. Oh, and he acts tough but is just a giant softie deep down >///< He just needed a hug. :‘C Was very lonely boi. (He says so in HPCC.)

2. Hannibal from Hannibal:

Kill count: 23 (that we know of).

What did he do: Murder and consume people in horribly gorey, disgusting, wildly creative/artistic ways.

Redeemed: NO, but he’s in a cute gay relationship with Will. lol. So i give him a pass.

Why I like him: he is an interesting guy, super intelligent, incredibly polite (he eats the rude), witty, calm, collected, calculating in an insanely hot way, charming, got style, oh, and really loves Will so much. The whole show was just their dark and literally insane (on Will’s part) love story tbh.

3. Crowley from Supernatural:

Kill count: thousands

What did he do: Torture countless people in hell and kill many others on Earth over the span of hundreds of years.

Redeemed: YES. <33 Lovable King of Hell turned antihero that even the good guys end up missing!! </3 ;___;

Why I like him: he is HILARIOUS, amazing personality, a true hero in the end ;__; Became a softie in the end. <33

4. Tate Langdon from American Horror Story:

Kill count: 15

What did he do: Was a 17 yo school shooter (Draco’s age), raped & impregnated his girlfriend’s mom, set his mom’s bf on fire, and loads of other things…. X:

Redeemed: YES. (but not to the extent of turning into an anti-hero..)

Why I like him: He is sooo sweet to Violet, his girlfriend (who forgave him for raping her mom– yeaaaa that’s AHS for ya!) Their love story was pretty epic, as she made him a better person in the end. He was just so lonely, complex, & misunderstood (only forgivable because he’s fictional THANK GOD!)

But also in the end, we learned that his reasons for being evil was due to the Murder House he was living in, where supernatural forces would amplify negative emotions and encourage malevolent behavior. Tate’s connection to the house and its spirits fueled his evil tendencies, so it wasn’t reallyyyyy his fault. :|

Plus as a ghost, no longer controlled by the House, he did become a better person and regretted shooting up the school. He just becomes a big softie. lol. :3 thankfully he and Violet were one of the few to actually get their happy ending on such a twisted show. :’))

5. Klaus Mikaelson from The Vampire Diaries universe (spoilers for The Originals):

Kill count: thousands

Redeemed: Sorta. He still kills people as a vampire hybrid, but he becomes less of an antagonist & he willingly dies for his daughter.

Why I like him: He is COMPLEX, wild, impulsive, rash, immensely powerful, has an alluring & totally charming personality, witty, hilarious, absolutely fearless, wicked smart, fun, heart of gold (when he’s not tearing people limb from limb). One of the most powerful characters in the series. When he loves, he loves VERY strongly (his love interest Caroline was a very lucky woman…. although he stabbed her in the stomach but then later healed her and they had a moment lol >///<). He is loyal to a fault and ended up willingly giving up his life for his daughter. He was over 1,000 years old.

6. Vaas Montenegro from Far Cry 3:

Kill count: hundreds

Redeemed: not a chance…. :V But that’s what i actually like about him.

Why I like him: he’s funny, HILARIOUS, sexy, batshit crazy, psychotic, super strong, skilled warrior fighter pirate, hot, psychopath just for the fun of it, impulsive, and pretty gay with the protagonist LOL

That's it. Those are the only villains I like lol. Hard to believe I had to explain on a reddit post that just because a fictional character isn’t morally upstanding, doesn’t mean you can’t still love them. Villains tend to be super interesting. Although all but 2 on my list were redeemed. V_V

Drarry fic recs #4

Marginal Notes by @blamebrampton

When you're 18, and nothing is as it was meant to be, sometimes it can be hard to let the right people know what you are thinking. Thankfully, Draco Malfoy owns a quill.

What a delightful story! I loved the thoughtful, grounded, calm Draco and how well he applied his wit (and the penchant for fixing things?) to solving other people's problems. It's a bit on the side of wishful thinking - I don't really believe someone could change that much over night - but it's nice wishful thinking that I enjoyed and would happily inflict on myself again. Among other things, I enjoyed the crisp, flawless writing. It's not often the editor in me wouldn't change a single word in a fic. I very much plan to read BB's entire catalogue.

The Boy from the Piano Shop by @soliblomst

After going blind in a reckless attempt to avenge Ginny's death, Harry battles with severe depression. One day, he stumbles upon a quaint piano restoration shop in the heart of London and meets the owner, a kindly old man, and his introverted young apprentice, whose voice sounds strangely familiar. As Harry and Draco slowly reconnect through private piano lessons, the small workshop becomes Harry's refuge, offering him a glimmer of hope in a world without eyes.

Finally got to read this fic everyone's talking about. And for good reasons! It's heartbreaking and wholesome, starkly realistic and hopelessly romantic, all at once. I'm often annoyed by shallow depictions of low self-esteem that goes with depression, especially when it's used as an artificial obstacle in the way of romance ("I'm not good enough for you, so even though I love you, I'm breaking up"), and this is one of the few stories (by which I mean all my reading, not just fanfiction) where I could completely believe it, and sympathize with it. (Bonus points for not being used as an obstacle in the way of romance.) The general lack of obstacles in the way of romance was incredibly refreshing and welcome, as was the lack of drama around the revelation that Harry Potter is secretly friends with Draco Malfoy. Everything is very mature, to the point where I think the story would be better set in their 30s than in their 20s, but I didn't mind. Harry's grief is all-present and at times, harrowing, but never gratuitous, and it's well-balanced by the peace and joy he finds in Draco's company. The two scenes where Draco unexpectedly dons a scarf are etched in my memory forever. An incredible piece.

The darkening sky is dangerous for the shape of Harry’s desire, it makes it seem reasonable, as though it were a natural conclusion of having Draco once again within reach, rather than the mirage it actually is.

I said it before, and I'll say it again: this fic is exquisite. Tense and tender in perfect proportion and filled with a dazzling array of sensory details that painted each scene like a work of art. Although I could see what was coming in the end (thanks to expert foreshadowing), the finale still stole my breath away. A wonderful read!

All Life is Yours to Miss by Saras_Girl & podfic by originally

Professor Malfoy's world is contained, controlled, and as solitary as he can make it, but when an act of petty revenge goes horribly awry, he and his trusty six-legged friend are thrown into Hogwarts life at the deep end and must learn to live, love and let go.

Oh, this was such a joy to listen. I think I had a smile on my face for the whole duration of the podfic (about 12 hours), minus the few minutes when there were tears instead. I don't know where to start with the praise. The meticulously constructed world of Draco's self-imposed loneliness? The supporting cast of interesting and well-rounded original characters? The tangible, eminently relatable trials and tribulations of a teacher's life? Or maybe the deceptively simple concept at the root of the story, allowing Draco to break out of his shell on his own? Oh, how I love this gentle, fragile, vulnerable Draco hiding behind impatience and aloofness and his sharp tongue. And the fearless, unstoppable Harry, his bouts of bad temper and his naked honesty. And Stanley, with that inevitable, ill-timed tack-tack-tack! Everything felt so true, so real, so close, I felt just as exposed and frightened as Draco, just as desperate at his inability to make a move. I know I said this half a dozen times by now since I started reading fic in this fandom, but I can't help it. This may be the best fic I've ever read.

Correction! The best fic I've ever heard! The reading was impeccable, possibly the best I've heard so far, and infused the story with even more life and love and laughter. A beautiful, unforgettable experience.

Heartbeat by @saxamophone (eight_of_wands)

Harry hates Draco. Draco hates Harry. Only it's not hate, not even a little bit. Featuring: a cooperative independent study, golden hour on wrecked sheets, water from fountains of dubious origin, purple Mardi Gras beads, and a bird with silly legs. Also featuring: heated arguments, infidelity, unquenchable desire, and heartbreak. Over and over again.

I'll be honest: this fic did not grip me at once. I could even say I struggled through the first few stances. But then came the understanding of what "I hate you" means and I read on with eyes wide and heart thumping (Malfoy, Malfoy, Malfoy) and I was so very richly rewarded. Among all the things I loved about it, the most memorable are the incredibly vivid images and impressions of New Orleans, and the moment of searing, all-consuming jealous rage that I regret to say I could relate to all too well. The confrontations were exquisite, the dialog sparking with tension and more importantly, with truth. There's no melodrama here to create suspense, it's all raw and real and indeed, heartbreaking. But hearts can mend. :)

I've been working on both of my BB fics.

Here's a snippet of my fic for the @drarry-mini-bang:

Harry slept fitfully that night, confused by his whereabouts, but still finding comfort in Malfoy’s warm and solid body pressed to his. He had slept alone since that time in the tent with Ron and Hermione, and he hadn’t realised how much he missed human contact. When he woke up in the morning, blinking a few times to adjust to the low light of the pale dawn, he was taken aback by how beautiful Malfoy looked in his peaceful slumber. Harry marvelled at how his eyelashes were so delicate and almost transparent; how they fluttered prettily as Malfoy dreamed of Merlin knew what. He just lay there for a long while, watching the minute changes in Malfoy’s features as he slowly woke up.

“Ugh, Potter, you creep,” Malfoy groaned, stretching like a lazy cat and then snuggling a little closer as soon as the bond made them both feel the absence of the other’s touch. “You need to ask for people’s permission to watch them sleep, you know? You can’t just go around and act like a weirdo simply because you saved the world. I mean, I know I have a pretty face, despite the ugly scars, but—”

“I want to see you naked,” Harry blurted out.

Baz comes to the pub and all the usual patrons looks taken aback. “Why are you here?” Dev asks with a raised eyebrow. “Can’t a bloke have a pint?” “Not a posh twat like you,” Gareth comments. “Shut up, Gareth. I’m here every other night.” “Behind the counter, yes,” Niall points out. “Or when there’s a football match on the big screen. But there isn’t a single match today, and Simon stole your job.” Baz looks embarrassed and on the verge of leaving for a moment, but then Simon pours him a glass of white wine and taps his hand on the sticky counter. “Baz and I have something important to discuss,” he says to the other patrons. “Now, mind your own bloody business and carry on getting plastered.”

HP Rec Fest, Day 20

I almost didn’t get this post ready on time but here we are for another @hprecfest day and I love today’s prompt! Some fandoms like Drarry are strongly driven by shippy feels and it’s easy to overlook great Gen fics. I rarely read them, but the G and T fics I’ve enjoyed have left a big impression on me. After allowing myself to rec popular smutty series yesterday I’m very happy to share two underrated comfort fics!

When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life. Luckily for Draco Malfoy, London has places where the tired can rest and recover.

BB is my go-to when I’m looking for top quality Gen fics - she’s written a total of 10 for HP and I can attest they’re all fantastic reads, charming, clever, creative and entertaining like few stories are. it was hard to pick just one but I chose by a) number of comments and b) Christmassy vibes. Tidings of Comfort (how brilliant is that title alone?) is an all-time favorite advent read when it comes to redemption arc. it has such a wistful evocative vibe, gorgeous religious refs and Draco and Harry’s voices are wonderfully mature and full of personality. their tentative reunion and existential conversations provide so much insight into their lives and background it’s crazy to think this series is just under 10k. I’m in love with the quiet and exploratory slow burn, cautious but full of promise; it becomes even more serendipitous due to the Christmas magic surrounding their encounter. a wonderful pre-slash read, sensitive and poignant, and a perfect treat for this holiday season!

my kingdom for a Rarry soulmate AU 😭 this trope fits the ship so perfectly and as always Ana kills me softly with the loveliest short fic. something about Harry’s tender longing for Ron hits me just right; his pov is very insightful and there’s a brilliant scene in which he analyses Justin that stayed with me for a long time (“He thinks of Sirius and his father, of how being raised in money makes it easy to believe that everything will always be taken care of” - what a quote!). I love his camaraderie with Ron and the way both romantic and platonic love are explored here - this fic gets into my favourite thing about Rarry which is the fact that Ron is “the first the first person Harry loved who loved him back.” I feel like that’s such a powerful yet overlooked aspect of their friendship and I love seeing it acknowledge here. the fic has also a creative take on Harry’s soulmark changing after the war which was really interesting and perfect angst material! I urge all Rarry lovers to go check this gem and give it a little love ❤️

Like this then, just like that Drarry Teen and Up (seriously just for the word 'arse') ~400 words Featuring: falling in love; artist Draco; friends to (future) lovers

“There, just like that,” Draco says, holding up a hand to forestall Harry shifting around any more.

“Like this then?” Harry checks, his arse a little numb from the low stone wall he’s perched on.

“If you’re okay in that position.” His paintbrush is already lifted though. He’s got that light in his eye.

“I’m good,” Harry tells him. And he mostly is.

It’s the sixth day of posing like this, right here beneath this oak tree as the leaves turn, the sun setting over the far-off hills.

He would have declined—Harry doesn’t like being the focus of anything and doesn’t consider himself worthy of being immortalised in a painting, but… The way he sees it, he’s helping out a friend, which is what Draco has sort of become, oddly enough.

So when Draco tells him to lift his chin a little more and let his eyes fall shut, Harry does. He feels the light stroke his face, even as the wall digs into his arsecheeks, and he listens to Draco’s little noises as he works—the fwick of a brush, the contemplative ‘hmm’, and now, just once, so softly, “Beautiful.”

Harry slants his eyes open to see Draco’s face after having said it, catching him blushing like a summer apricot, the sun washing his hair gold. Draco grips his lip between his teeth, glances up, says, “Eyes closed, Potter,” with a small, indulgent smile.

Harry shuts his eyes, lifts his chin toward the syrupy sunlight, and tries to embrace the moment and not ache with a pre-emptive regret for the day Draco finishes. Because he started out posing for a friend, and now he’s falling

“Mm,” Draco says again. Fwick, fwick, fwick.

Harry’s heart pounds with every moment, silently begging the sun to set slower, to give him more time. Time to screw up his courage and ask Draco out. Time to sit here, bathed in ripe autumn and cooling light, letting himself slip further into it, inch by inch, until he’s miles and miles gone. Time to sit here in the heady warmth of Draco’s regard.

Whether or not Draco knows it, he’s painting Harry falling in love. He’s capturing every moment of it and committing it to canvas. And Harry will let him, wondering if he sees. He’ll stay here, quietly aching with it.

Like this then, just like that.

‘Figured it out, then?’ Ron said wryly, and then hissed as a muffled thwack came from his other side.

‘Tact, Ronald,’ Hermione sighed.

‘Wait.’ Harry sat up a little. ‘You two have talked about this?’

‘Not really,’ Ron winced. ‘More like…well, you said your first kiss with Cho was wet.’

‘And nothing really happened with Ginny,’ Hermione added, ‘but that doesn’t mean you’re gay. You might be bisexual.’

Harry’s mouth opened in indignation. ‘But not straight, is what you’re saying?’

Ron and Hermione looked at him somewhat pitifully.

‘Er, nah, don’t think so,’ Ron eventually said, patting Harry’s shoulder.

An Unexpected Pet, wc 359. listen i am a snake enthusiast and nothing makes me happier than parselmouth harry talking about draco with his snakes. and the snakes loving draco as much as harry does. an absolute must read.

Amnesia, wc 1310. “...eventually, he’d have to give this impossible scenario up, but until then—Malfoy was beautiful, and he looked at Harry like he was the only thing in the world worth seeing.” usually amnesia fics make me so anxious but this one was so soft and just absolutely beautiful. i want to quote every line of this fic because it’s just. absolutely stunning.

Draco Malfoy vs. Spicy Food, wc 640. “...how was Harry supposed to know there was a special spoon for the bloody snails?” every word of this is absolutely brilliant. their competitive, teasing nature is so vivid. the best of drarry right here.

Thigh Highs, wc 321. harry in lingerie looking so hot that draco literally thinks he’s dreaming. ugh. this is so HOT okay just read it, yeah? trust me.

1:27am, wc 681. “Draco’s presence was a comfort, but also an unavoidable reminder of the contents of that dream. Of how much he had to lose.” oh my godddd the nightmare feels so real even though we don’t even see it on screen. the emotions! the emotions! they are so vivid. and the way that draco comforts harry brings me endless joy.

Hot and Bothered, Post-Quidditch, wc 646. ok this one was my prompt so of course i’m obsessed with it, but come on. draco is the epitome of hot. harry is the epitome of bothered. it’s both hilarious and hot, and it’s perfect in every way.

They're Coming, Hurry Up and Kiss Me!, wc 698. ok this is so funny, harry has accepted what he needs to do to get the press out of his face and to get draco, well, in his face, so to speak. there’s just so much energy and personality in here, it’s amazing.

Ill-Timed First Kiss, wc 288. draco bringing harry back from numbness is just so real. and that last line is both so unexpected yet so absolutely perfect for the situation. my gOD. gets me every time. lou brings so much with every single word.

You've Got To Be Kidding Me, wc 534. hello the tension here is insane!!!! their friends’ absolute frustration with them- it’s absolutely hilarious. i’m so here for eighth year drarry all the time but this is definitely one of my favorites. every word is perfect.
