had the idea to do a fictional detective bracket (instead of a poll since there are way more than ten options) but I definitely don't have the energy to run something along the lines of all those character brackets with thousands of asks...
actually whatever. Let's do this right now.

Gender, in fact, was crucial to Darwinist ideas. One of the basic assumptions within the Darwinian model was the belief that, as organisms evolved through a process of natural selection, they also showed greater signs of differentiation between the (two) sexes. Following this logic, various writers used sexual characteristics as indicators of evolutionary progress toward civilization. In Man and Woman, for instance, Ellis himself cautiously suggested that since the "beginnings of industrialism," "more marked sexual differences in physical development seem (we cannot speak definitely) to have developed than are usually to be found in savage societies.” In this passage, Ellis drew from theories developed by biologists like Patrick Geddes and J. Arthur Thomson. In their important work The Evolution of Sex, which traced the role of sexual difference in evolution, Geddes and Thomson stated that "hermaphroditism is primitive; the unisexual state is a subsequent differentiation. The present cases of normal hermaphroditism imply either persistence or reversion." In characterizing either lesbians' or African-American women's bodies as less sexually differentiated than the norm (always posited as white heterosexual women's bodies), anatomists drew upon notions of natural selection to dismiss these bodies as anomalous "throwbacks" within a scheme of cultural and anatomical progress.

On August 6th 1796,the Scottish artist David Allan died, he was known as The Scottish Hogarth.
Allan was born in what once was the busy port of Alloa on the river Forth where his father, also David, was the Shoremaster in charge of the harbour.
David had a rather unfortunate childhood; he was born prematurely and his mother died shortly after his birth, he survived two accidents in his early years which threatened his life.  He displayed an early talent for drawing which led to his expulsion from the parish school when he drew a caricature of the dominie in the act of caning unruly pupils, dominie is an old Scottish name for a schoolmaster.
In 1753, Robert Foulis, a publisher in Glasgow, founded the Academy of Art and Design which was granted a room in Glasgow University.  The Academy was essentially a charitable institution supported by local wealthy merchants with encouragement from the aristocracy including the Duke of Argyle and Lord Cathcart.  In 1755, two years after its foundation it had only ten pupils who paid 1½ guineas a session.   In that year David Allan entered the Academy at the age of eleven as an apprentice bound to Robert Foulis for a period of seven years. He was supported no doubt by Lord Cathcart whose estate, Schawpark, was adjacent to Alloa.  Lord and Lady Cathcart became aware of Allan’s artistic ability at an early age and gave him encouragement and financial support throughout their lives.
The Academy enjoyed only a brief existence until 1775 when financial difficulties led to its closure but during its short life it fostered a number of young students who rose to eminence including David Allan and his close friend and contemporary James Tassie. Allan completed his apprenticeship and continued to study at the Academy for a further two years becoming a master of the skills of engraving and etching.
To complete his education, it was felt that Allan should attend one of the continental schools.  In 1767 he moved to Rome, where he lived for ten years; this was the most successful period of his life. In Rome, Allan painted ambitious historical pictures, portraits, caricatures and genre scenes. On returning to London in 1777, he spent two years trying to establish himself. Unsuccessful and ill, he returned to Scotland where he specialised in painting family groups. He also produced book illustrations and was appointed the master of the Trustees' Academy at Edinburgh, as well as illustrations for publications by Robert Burns and Allan Ramsay.
Allan collaborated with Burns through George Thomson: with the 1793 commission for Thomson’s song collection, the artist produced more than 100 drawings in oval format. Burns saw in Allan’s work a spirit similar to his own. The poet wrote to Thomson in November 1794:
I look on myself to be a kind of brother-brush with him. – “Pride in Poets is nae sin”, & I will say it, that I look on Mr Allen & Mr Burns to be the only genuine & real Painters of Scotish Costume in the world!
Burns owned a copy of Allan Ramsay’s The Gentle Shepherd as published by Foulis in Glasgow in 1788. . In 1794 he described David Allan as a “man of very great genius”, and marvelled that he was not better known than he was.
Allan married Shirley Welsh, herself a keen art student, and a great admirer of her husband’s work, they had five children only one of whom, Barbara, reached adult life.
Burns died on 21st July, and was closely followed by Allan, on 6th August 1796.
Allan is buried in the Old Calton Cemetery, Edinburgh, not far from the grave of David Hume.
The first three pics are from my visit to The Scottish National Portrait Gallery las week, the others are from the ilustrations he drew for Burns, my favourite being the "Battle of Killiecrankie" one, another link to a recent post. The final pic is also my own from a visit to Old Calton Burial Ground.

Tagged by @tanukifucker91, thank you for the tag!
Favorite color: Navy Blue, although I think in terms of art I drew both past and present, I really gravitate towards any jewel tone for the dominant colors....
Last song(s) I listed to: Kuroneko Lounge's Mix set for House of Double Dealing Character is just my go to. It's what I listen to while recording myself assembling models lately and also my default when I'm in the mood to make colored paper for origami.
Currently reading: Because Internet, Understanding the New Rules of Language by Gretchen McCulloch, though I've kind of gotten side tracked lately. There's also a book on Vietnamese Grammar published by Lawrance C. Thomson that I started reading but also got...side tracked...the latter is interesting because it was published in 1965. I was very interested in the latter book because it went into detail about Vietnamese kinship rules, and described them as separate from pronouns. Which is really funny 'cause a lot of non-linguist Vietnamese will describe these terms as pronouns.
Currently watching: Recently watched a friend finish their playthrough of the fan translation of the 2nd Ace Attorney Investigations game. it reminded me why I love Hakari/Verity and Tateyuki/Eddie so much. For more a conventional thing, I did recently finish watching the final episode of the Pillar Training Arc with friends. At my leisure I do go back and see how the Vietnamese subs handle it. It's fun, but I can't really read that fast so it takes me anywhere from three to five times as long as how fast I read English...
Currently craving: I'd really just want to go into town and walk around since it's been a while since I've done that, but the humidity has been discouraging me lately. I'd like to go for dan dan noodles with iced milk tea.
Coffee or tea: Coffee, though I generally like both.
Tagging @talonsin, @boonool, and @thenon-fictiondays (as always, anyone interested is free to do this). No obligations, but I also want to send y'all well wishes while I'm here.

alright everybody, i’m gonna make franklin having thomson poll the philadelphia delegation worse.
Charles Thomson started out his political career as essentially a Ben Franklin Sycophant, but they completely (and messily) parted ways over Franklin's response to the Stamp Act (popular opinion in Philadelphia being that Franklin had essentially allowed it), and part of the reason for that was John Dickinson. Dickinson didn't particularly like anybody when he was in his late 20s but Franklin was a particular target of his ire and that and the fact that Dickinson and Thomson were both VEHEMENTLY against the Stamp Act naturally drew them to each-other. Thomson was basically Dickinson's only friend for a good eight years (most of the 1760s), and to be a little hyperbolic Thomson essentially left his first wife "for" Dickinson. By 1776 Thomson and Dickinson were still extremely close friends, and Franklin, being friends with Dickinson's wife (and having been friends, before she died, with the first Mrs. Thomson), would absolutely have known that. That basically turns this scene into Franklin making Thomson essentially complicit in the worst thing that's happened to John Dickinson for like... six or eight months.

What are your ships for Batim? :D

VERY GOOD QUESTION- I know my answer should be rather straightforward but I feel I have to put some context to my answers since they may seem contradictory/paradoxical otherwise, so bear with me-
Sammy x Norman : Well. I think that one was pretty obvious, anyone who's seen more than 3 of my posts knows that I'd die for these two. They're just so PERFECT for each other, from their complementary personalities to the fact that their relationship allows us to delve deeper into batim's historical and social context. Sammy and Norman have one of the few relationships that develop the most during the game's lore : Norman originally complains vehemently about Sammy's frenetic behavior, only to end up lamenting to Buddy and Dot how 'Sammy isn't the same anymore'. What's interesting about this statement is that he says it in relation to Sammy's strange behavior : clearly, the two men have grown close enough for Norman to differentiate Sammy's extravagant habits from his ink-influenced behavior.
Furthermore, Sammy is a very gray character morally, a perfectionist who is extremely socially maladjusted (surely due to the fact that he's coded on the spectrum and autism wasn't properly diagnosed at the time), naturally ostracizing him. For his part, Norman comes from a rural background (which surely earns him the animosity of the people at the studio, given the historical context and the fact that he could very well be poc) and also seems ill at ease socially : to me, it's fascinating to see two characters excluded from their peers because of differences they can't change (being autistic or poc and gay) getting closer to each other, to the point where Sammy, who is deeply misanthropic, naturally compliments Norman by describing him as very bright. To me, Norman is the perfect partner for Sammy : ready to apprehend him as he is, since he's completely free of social conventions, without taking any shits from him.
I think Sammy and Norman can really get the best out of each other, during a historical period when being different was strongly proscribed. I think I'd have trouble enjoying Batim as much without their dynamic at its heart (considering how narratively rich it is) : Norman is Henry's confidant, Sammy is Joey's, both remain morally gray deuteragonists fundamentally opposed to the ink machine, while remaining fascinated by its powers. And who wouldn't love a good old enemies to lovers ending tragically with the unwitting murder of one by the other ? After all, Norman's main flaw is that he's too curious for his own good, and it was Sammy who inevitably led him to his doom..
Allison x Tom : what more can I add. She's everything. He's just Tom. I've always been drawn to characters/ships with a vibe completely opposite to the vibe of the work they originally came from, and the 'turning poison into positivity' energy that Tom and Allison bring to Batim has always fascinated me. In a world as tragic as their own, I find it touching to see these two find beauty in all the ugliness and manage to ask themselves 'what if we were happy after all ?' It's really striking and brings a narrative richness to the work, since they directly mirror what failed with Sammy and Susie : Allison is perfect, but that was never what was at stake in Tom's eyes. Tom was looking for humanity, not perfection, and he managed to go beyond the image of the muse to discover a friend, unlike Sammy with Susie. They're literally Romeo and Juliet but, well... Not dead.
Joey x Henry/Henry x Linda : oh boy. These three... Let me get it straight right away : Henry and Linda are perfect for each other. She's exactly what he needs to be happy : she's present, patient. There's no denying that he loves her immensely. But Joey... oh Joey is undoubtedly Henry's soul mate. The subtlety is that Joey can't bring him the stable happiness Linda can : Joey tugs at him, pushes him over the edge. He knows exactly what to do to push him beyond his own limits. The love Joey offers Henry is an uncomfortable but unconditional one, one that would allow Henry to go beyond what he thinks he's capable of achieving because no one knows Henry better than Joey ! And let's be honest, Batim only exists because Joey refuses to move on, to live his dream without Henry in it. He's stuck in unrequited love and refuses to learn to live with it. And that's the tragedy of this trio : Henry sincerely loves Linda but is truly himself with Joey, which prevents him from hating OR loving him (And Joey exploits this information by remaining extremely toxic and convincing himself that he can wear him down lmao). Henry is stuck with this dilemma : Existing peacefully with Linda or living painfully with Joey. And that's why I love the dynamic of this love triangle : because there are no solutions that will satisfy everyone.
Joey x Sammy : okay, don’t get me wrong : these two are HORRIBLE for each other. Does Sammy periodically want to quit just to piss Joey off? Yes. Isn't Joey's fascination with Sammy intimately tied to his refusal to forget Henry, who was a genius like Sammy? Yes. Nevertheless, it's impossible for me to read The Illusion of Living without feeling embarrassed and like I'm reading Joey's diary : whether you ship them or not, Joey is practically canonically smitten with Sammy. I sincerely don't think Joey and Sammy can sustain a healthy relationship with each other, but oh boy, surely that won't stop me from exploiting their bizarre obsessive love-hate relationship, where it's hard to determine whether they're going to throw hands or make out.

This one was an interesting commission to get done - drew a fella hanging out with Mick Thomson from Slipknot in Lethal Company!
I hope there's nothing hanging out in the darkness, waiting for the perfect moment to snap their necks...
(There totally is)
