I just realised that we started here:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
how why did we end up at:
“You are so STRONG/BRAVE/COOL/… ! “, said by everyone?
It’s pretty obvious now, that the season’s big obstacle wasn’t Mailin’s performativ activism, because after these looks and comments she only got praise for it (except from her mum and shortly Zoe). It seems like the people who didn’t get her message were the problem, not Mailin’s delivery of it. Which is such a shallow take on the topic. They never really looked at her behaviour critically. I can’t wrap my head around why we had to end up here, when we started there.

4 years of Druck S3 - week 4
Things of note in this episode:
First, obviously we all love the end of the episode and there’s really nothing more to say about it after so many people have said so many brilliant things already.  So here, have some of my favourite shots of the end scene:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, of course there are other things to be said, so here are some thoughts:
Tumblr media
1. ‘Why are you religious?  It’s 2019, you’re an intelligent girl’ forcefully reminds me of ‘it’s 2016, get out of the closet’ and it hit me more than usual this time just how grossly ignorant both those statements were.  So, as much as I still think Emma should have apologised to Isak, I also think Matteo definitely needed to apologise to Amira here (like he kind of does later??? But also not really???? Unless I really did forget something).  This statement about her religion is just as shitty as the one about being in the closet and she was 100% in the right to call him out on it.  I get where he’s coming from and why, but yikes.
Tumblr media
2.  The start of the in jokes they share with each other - followed up later this episode by Matteo saying he wants cheese toasts again sometime and of course David’s most best social media post ever (not quite this episode, but related!!):
Tumblr media
Speaking of these in jokes, I do love that Matteo perks up so much when he gets this stuff from David.  I tend to think of him as someone who overthinks (think of the questions he asks both Jonas and Amira around being gay and how he keeps stepping into trouble because of it when he’s just trying to sort his thoughts out) and after the events at the end of episode 3, his thoughts must have been in a right whirl.  So getting this proof that David is also still in the moment, and calling back to other moments they shared, must have been so relieving for him.
Tumblr media
3.  Nothing new here, but I do love how soft his voice goes when he says David’s name.  This guy has it bad!!!! Good thing David is about to show that he’s feeling it all as well :D
Tumblr media
4.  Having said that, this whole bit with Sara is so uncomfortable.  Don’t get me wrong, this is super realistic, but it’s still difficult to watch.  First, the way it’s filmed is very clever but also so awkward to watch.  There is a wonderful series of videos which analyses this season which can be found here and goes into detail about how the camera works in this scene so I won’t go into more detail.  But second - Sara’s clearly trying to do silly boyfriend/girlfriend stuff with Matteo but it’s so unnatural and strained/forced.  Of course he isn’t interested in going away together once school finishes!  They’ve only been together a few weeks at most.  And the pregnancy April fool?  Sooooo weird given their relationship and lack of sexual aspects to it.  No wonder his reaction is ????? It’s hard to see her so happy though - she’s trying so hard and wants it so bad that she’s kind of convinced herself that this is something different.

Some thoughts on Heartstopper s2:
Overall, I liked Tara and Darcy's arc, but I wish it had been set up better. I got the impression in s1 that Tara and Darcy have been dating forever, maybe even since they were like 13-14, and I just can't believe that the ilu issue hadn't come up yet. Particularly on a show like this when even platonic friends will say ilu to each other all the time. I think a better way to set up the sl would've been:
show Tara saying ilu to Darcy without expecting reciprocation, portrayed like it's something she does all the time.
show Tara longingly watching Nick and Charlie saying ilu to each other.
have Tara say ilu to Darcy now with the hope/expectation that Darcy will say it back.
everything else takes place exactly as it did on the show.
Similarly, I loved Tao and Elle's arc. I was really looking forward to their getting together after s1, and throughout the season I was 😍😍😍😍. I just didn't connect with Elle's mood after the movie date. I guess I myself would've been disappointed, but not to that extent, and so that part didn't work for me.
While I'm glad that Imogen will be wlw (more in a sec), a part of me wishes she hadn't been just to compare the way people reacted to her character in s1 vs s2. Because really, Imogen acted exactly the same in both seasons (it was the way the dude treated her that changed), but I can't imagine people would have the same reactions towards her with Nick vs towards her with Ben.
I do hope Imogen will be a lesbian, mostly because of the lesbian lighting. That being said, I wish it was Sahar who got the self-discovery arc. In the end though, I want a wlw to get the Heartstopper self-discovery arc, and I look forward to whatever happens with Imogen (and Sahar!).
I was also looking forward to Isaac's arc and it didn't disappoint. I think Isaac is the first explicitly ace character (maybe also aro?) with a self-discovery arc I've watched, and I was really interested in how it was going to be portrayed. I love Isaac's actor's smile, I think he's so cute.
Olivia Colman put her whole pussy into that family dinner scene, whew! Nick's mom's role wasn't that large, but she stole the show with her facial expressions and her whole "I just don't know wtf is wrong with this man!" attitude.
I feel sorry for Ben despite his whole evil Mark Owen thing, but I also like that Alice Oseman chose not to redeem him. I am mighty tired of bullies and abusers getting half baked redemption arcs (hi Druck s7 and s8), and it's plausible for Ben to just not be there yet. I think Heartstopper as a comic and show has people being lovely more often than not. So I think it's a brave choice not to redeem Ben, and let us give him a happier ending in our mind if we so wish.
And on that note I really appreciate that Heartstopper allows its characters to call out bullies, abusers, bad parents, and tells its audiences they don't have to forgive bad treatment if they don't want to. For a show that's been so criticized for being wholesome (i.e. sexless) and, for that reason, not ~challenging~ enough, I think allowing its characters not to forgive is actually a subtly subversive choice. I think just about any other teen show would've made Charlie allow his former bullies into the party because the ringleader had been a bit nicer in the Eiffel Tower. Imo it's details like that that show an actually queer person is behind the show, compared to the shows produced, written or directed by straight people.

Seeing the recent development of season 8 finally enabled me to pinpoint what went/goes wrong with Druck season 7 and 8.
Both Isi and Mailin engage in multiple questionable and sometimes objectively bad actions. This is not the problem, since every SKAM main has done this so far. The problem is, that some actions do not get called out as bad, or do require an apology from the main, but do not get one.
For Isi we have for example: stealing at your friend’s workplace, irresponsible behavior with drugs and alcohol, lying, and letting your friends down (I’m also thinking about Zoe and Kieu My here).
For Mailin we have: destroying school property, kissing without consent, attacking someone for their values/beliefs in a passive-aggressive way.
These behaviors do not get resolved, because there is an escalating order of the characters problematic behaviors, which makes the older ones seem unimportant compared to a huge ‘main mistake’ the character makes (in Mailin’s case it is the nudes getting leaked and in Isi’s case it is not showing up to Sascha’s gig). In Isi’s season, this behavior ends up being the only one with a resolution and apologetic actions, and it would not surprise me if Mailin’s season is centered around the nudes from now on.
Also, in past seasons, the character’s behavior was somehow always linked to their struggle, therefore putting them in a dilemma situation and making us understand why they could possibly do such stuff, even though we objectively regard it as bad. It makes us feel empathy for the character, and in the end, when the character tries to make up for their mistakes, we root for them. To illustrate this, I have written down Matteos problematic behaviors with certain characters, how it is linked to his internal struggle, and how he makes up for it:
Matteo and Amira: Matteo hides weed in Amiras backpack, gives an absolute shit about their biology exam and attacks her for being religious; reason: Matteo feels insecure about his sexuality and possible homophobic reactions and also is not able to concentrate on school at the moment resolution: Matteo invites Amira for a coffee, shows actual effort for studying, apologizes, and also has the talk with Amira about biology/Islam and homosexuality which puts him at ease about homophobia
Matteo and his friend group: is uninterested in engaging in activities with his friend group, and ends up yelling at them after his break up with Sarah reason: Matteo feels pressured by the heteronormative expectations of his friends, and feels like an outsider for not being straight, and feels like he cannot talk about his actual problems with his friends (David leaving him alone) resolution: Matteo comes out to Jonas and explains himself, thereby receiving support for his situation, later meets up with his friends and apologizes
Matteo and Sarah: Matteo is a horrible boyfriend to Sara, rejecting her when she wants physical intimacy without explanation, and cheats on her with David reason: Matteo is not ready to come out and wants to fit in into the heteronormative image of society resolution: Matteo visits Sarah at her home, explains his situation and apologizes
Matteo and Hans: Matteo is a horrible flatmate, very messy/dirty, and attacks Hans for being openly gay reason: Matteo struggles with internalized homophobia and being heartbroken, and with these struggles he is not really able to take care of himself and his surroundings resolution: Matteo has a whole cleaning session in one clip, and later asks Hans for his advice twice, acknowledging that he is his ‘Gay Guru’
I could list even more examples, but you get the idea. Matteo makes up for almost everything he does in his season. He properly apologizes. Multiple times. And we can link almost every behavior of Matteo to his internal dilemma situation (being a closeted gay teenager and falling in love with a boy for the first time).
In Isi’s season, their mistakes were almost never connected to their internal struggle (gender identity crisis), but to the affection they felt for Lou. And since the two of them do not even end up being lovers, it is hard to make that a believable reason for Isi to commit all these mistakes, and ultimately to ‘forgive’ them for their mistakes or feeling like we understand them.
In Mailin’s season I don’t even recognize one distinctive internal struggle (except for being unexperienced maybe, but that is not a good reason to do any of the stuff Mailin does??). Her behaviors lack a proper explanation for me which makes it hard for me to feel empathy towards her.
Plus, both Isi and Mailin seemed to get the most perfect, ‘clean’ Love Interests. I’m sorry, but I never saw any major character flaws in both Sascha and Finn. This even exaggerates the contrast between the ‘bad’ actions of Isi and Mailin and their ‘innocent’ love interests. In combination, all of this leads me to think that neither Isi nor Mailin deserves someone like Finn/Sascha. The relationship seems ‘unbalanced’.
In conclusion, the new DRUCK writers do not seem to have understood how the show used to work. And how to portray a main as likeable. And this is sad, because it could have been fixed with a few more honest apologies, the characters internal struggle as the link between all of this, and a steady building up of conflicts instead of a tendency towards escalation.

Year after Year
Isak tore his gaze from the man singing at the centre of the church and looked for the boy at the other side of the aisle. He found him in the crowd immediately and was surprised to see  the boy’s eyes already set on him. He was turned around on the pew, his chin resting on his arms crossed over the backrest— and he was looking at Isak. The boy had lost that semi-stunned expression Isak initially noticed, his gaze now attentive and soft. But Isak still felt like it had the power to pierce through him, like there was nothing he could hide as long as the boy looked at him. Isak felt his heart beat faster in his chest. The church suddenly felt too crowded, the lights of the candles too bright, the warmth of their small, flickering flames too strong. Isak was too hot and he felt like he could barely breathe. The thick, wool Marius sweater that his mum had forced him to wear because his grandmother had knitted it for him, scratched the skin of his neck where it wasn’t protected by the long-sleeved cotton shirt he was wearing underneath. Isak was sure the boy was able to see his agitation— his skin blushing, his breath getting faster— he would probably think Isak was some weirdo. But to Isak’s surprise, the boy’s gaze never lost its softness and Isak started to feel his turmoil unwind under it. O helga natt, du frälsning åt oss gav The boy smiled, his lips stretching, first on one side as if he was amused by something Isak would have done or said, then all across his face. He smiled at Isak and he was…beautiful. It felt like a strange response to have about another boy his age. It was the first time Isak thought about someone that way except maybe, for his Mamma. But that was what this boy was; beautiful. Isak could find no other word to describe him. And his smile. Isak felt something shift inside him the moment this smile was laid on him. It was a smile that had the power to silence the most holy words and to warm the coldest winter days. Isak had the profound sensation that something had changed with this smile. Something felt different, although he couldn’t figure out what it was. That was an even sillier reaction  than to call this boy beautiful. And yet… When the boy smiled at him, Isak thought that maybe this was something of the divine his mother had told him about— this pure, celestial beauty she found in the word of the Gospel that Isak couldn’t comprehend. Maybe he had found it. Maybe the divine was held in this smile with the power to warm the coldest winter days; in these eyes, brighter and more blue than the big neon cross at the centre of the church choir.
A sneak peek at the fic I will be soon sharing as part of the @skambigbang 2022. This story will feature art by the wonderfully talented Lulu, go ckeck out their Instagram!

Somebody posted David and Matteo's pool scene on their story and my body lit up like when movies depict people getting sugar rushes. I went straight to youtube, played the clip, and remained calm until I unintentionally sang along to the background music. Lost it. Literally singing German words I haven't heard in 4 years. A visceral reaction, druck (up to season 4) had such a strong hold on me. It's forever ingrained in my brain even when I thought I'd forgotten, it's still there.

I’m tired of the season and of pointing out everything poorly-executed, so I won’t give the final clip lots of thought; I’ll just quickly hammer off a few ideas here.
The Cash Queens’ thought capsules didn’t have the impact that they should've had for me. We didn’t see them as a friend group in season 7, and in season 8 it also feels like they had few meaningful interactions, plus their characterizations changed; much of what they describe refers to their relationship from seasons ago, or feels so, and the way they and the show have been since takes away from the impact. The Abi-videos aren’t really interesting to watch, though I love that Ava interviewed Oma Doro and the way she justifies it 🥺 Given their recent choices, DRUCK promoting tolerance, education and representation doesn’t seem sincere, so my reaction isn’t either.
