I wrote this last year. I didn't have the energy to write up something new for this year, even though I have at least one new rare disease diagnosis, possibly more than one. (I'd have to look up whether or not some things are considered rare.)
Please read and spread the word about rare diseases! Feel free to comment/reblog to share your own rare disease diagnoses.

Снова я на связи с камнями!!! Опять забазарю на ломаном английском потому что видимо так людям проще☹️
1. Pebble (russian: galka > galya) is the last of the genus of pebbles. But she is firmly convinced that her relatives are waiting her on the other side of the sea... Therefore, her main occupation is to run across the waves in the hope of reaching an oasis with them. Often stands in the water, wondering how to overcome an obstacle, so she doesn't make camouflage on legs. When she stops catching the wave, she falls to the bottom, from where she is pulled out by her partner Agatha and the head of the search party Metis.
2. Amethyst geode-2 or for short - Metis (aMETIStovaya) leads squads of fighters, but is more often involved in searching for and delivering them to the doctor. Refused to restore her face in order remind everyone of the risks of such work and to show that she is such a victim and everyone should be grateful for her. I associated it with Kyle 1706))
3. Agate geode-1 or just Agatha, pebble's partner and generally a good girl - she's friendly with everyone. It is considered one of the rare geodes, so many don't understand her choice of profession, but she enjoys running around and getting her friend from the depths of the sea. The hands aren't masked, the nails are manicured.
4. Well, and a bonus below is the anatomy of geodes and drusen. Geodes are hollow inside, which makes them quite fragile, but they are easier to restore - you can use both ordinary and precious stones. their palms and feet are completely filled, and growths are also observed in the area of our heart, navel and brain.
Druses are underdeveloped geodes in my AU; they are usually much smaller in size, but the degree of development may vary. they are born very rarely due to disorders. Their hairstyles are usually sharp and directed upwards. wear white dresses, study territories, keep all kinds of chronicles and archive. They consist more of stones than minerals, and are much less hollow than geodes, therefore less fragile. but it is still dangerous to take them on outings due to their growth and, again, violations.
something like this 👍 спасибо за внимание

I might be going blind lmao or at least half blind, how much do Y’ALL love Aemond?
Tumblr media
No but for real. I had an eye appointment back in October and I had done in with plans to discuss some vision issues that I didn’t know were issues because I needed a new prescription or my eyes were going bad.
We did the optiscan, which is like digital dilation and she discovered calcified proteins building up on my optic nerve in my left eye. We discussed the changes and my script/astigmatism had changed drastically so I went back after a couple weeks to see if that helped and she got ahold of my previous scans to see how quickly this had happened. A couple weeks after that, she sent me a referral to see a specialist for optic disc drusen, which may start out in one eye but will typically end up effecting both eyes. Normally it wouldn’t seem like such a huge deal because generally you just lose some peripheral vision but I already have central vision issues and that seems to be the precursor to central vision loss.
I won’t know for sure what my prognosis is until I see the specialist in a couple weeks but I made a joke to my boss about replacing me eventually if I lose sight in one eye and this motherfucker does “you can just wear an eyepatch, don’t you like those?” and I fell out. I was glad that he was able to make me laugh about it but also making a joke about my Aemond obsession.
Which again, makes me so thankful for y’all, across all fandoms. You don’t even know, everything I see/interact is even more precious and beautiful to me because I don’t know what my future looks like and I’m just enjoying everything I have right now. It’s also why I get so frustrated when some of y’all are so mean to each other, you don’t know what’s going on each other’s lives and what if the cruelty you’re spitting out is the last thing they get to see?
I’ll keep everyone updated, but I’m going to live like I’m going blind tomorrow and I’m going to focus on being kind and present without allowing the bitter and mean to effect my moods. Wouldn’t it be nice if we all did such a thing?

Starting to feel a tiny bit better today. Im maybe in 90% the pain. I think that 10% better is because I’ve been sleeping 🙃🙃
Also, I feel a little vindicated. Little sister’s eye stuff is drusen. Which is what I told my mom I think is likely. They found out because an ophthalmologist did the fundoscopy. Which is what I also thought was the next best step since little sis didn’t want to do a LP.
Our older sister who is Actually A Doctor was leaning into IIH. It just didn’t feel as right to me. Which is totally not a valid reason, but I’m still taking it as me being more right than the actual doctor 😅

Since I had the day off I went in for an eye exam today.
Good news: even though it's been 22 months the doctor says that if I got new glasses now I'd barely tell the difference in prescription strength, so I could just skip it for now.
Neutral-ish news: without dilating my eyes the doctor detected drusen, but only in one small area of my right eye; he says he'd be concerned if he saw more, but I should get checked again in a year to see if it's changed at all.
I smoked for 26 years until last June and that can be a contributing factor to it, so in my mind it's possible that the drusen is just a minor side-effect of that. The other major contributing factor to drusen is being white, and folks, that's something I was born with that just won't change.
So I'm probably at the age where more regular eye appointments may be necessary. Fun with aging!

Age-Related Molecular Degeneration Market Snapshot (2023 to 2033)
Tumblr media
The global Age-Related Molecular Degeneration Market Size is currently valued at US$ 11.28 million in 2023 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7%. Because to technology advancements in healthcare, the market is expected to reach US$ 22.19 million by 2033.
Age-Related Molecular Degeneration (AMD) is a prevalent and progressive eye condition that primarily affects older adults. It is characterized by the deterioration of the macula, a small central portion of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. The molecular changes associated with AMD occur due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. One key molecular mechanism is the accumulation of drusen, yellow deposits made up of lipids, proteins, and other waste materials, beneath the retinal pigment epithelium. These drusen disrupt the normal functioning of the cells in the macula, leading to the death of photoreceptor cells and subsequent vision loss.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration: Understanding, Treatment, and Prevention
Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a prevalent eye condition that primarily affects older adults. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the complexity of AMD or are just looking to understand it better, you’ve come to the right place. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll delve into what AMD is, its symptoms, causes, and the best ways to manage and prevent it. So, let’s explore this eye condition together and arm ourselves with knowledge!
What is Age-Related Macular Degeneration?
The Basics of AMD
Age-Related Macular Degeneration, often referred to as AMD, is a serious condition that impacts the macula of the retina. The macula is the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, straight-ahead vision. When it deteriorates, it leads to blurred or distorted vision, making daily activities challenging.
How AMD Affects Vision
The macula is crucial for tasks that require detailed vision, like reading or recognizing faces. Damage to this part of the retina can cause central vision loss, though peripheral vision often remains intact. This can significantly affect one’s quality of life, making routine tasks more difficult.
Types of Age-Related Macular Degeneration
Dry AMD: The Most Common Type
Dry AMD is the most prevalent form, accounting for about 90% of cases. It involves the gradual breakdown of the macula’s cells. This type progresses slowly, leading to a gradual loss of vision.
Key Characteristics of Dry AMD
Slow Progression: Symptoms develop gradually over years.
Macular Drusen: Yellowish deposits that form under the retina.
Blurry Vision: Central vision becomes less sharp.
Wet AMD: The Less Common but More Severe Type
Wet AMD is less common but tends to progress rapidly. It involves the growth of abnormal blood vessels under the retina, which can leak fluid and blood, leading to severe damage to the macula.
Symptoms of Wet AMD
Rapid Vision Loss: Sudden decrease in central vision.
Distorted Vision: Straight lines may appear wavy.
Blind Spots: Dark or blank spots in the central vision.
Symptoms of Age-Related Macular Degeneration
Recognizing the symptoms of AMD early on can make a significant difference in treatment outcomes. Here are some common signs to watch for:
Redness and Pain: Eyes may appear red and feel painful.
Shadow or Dark Curtain: A shadow or dark curtain in your vision.
Distorted Lines: Straight lines may look wavy or bent.
Blurred Vision: Vision might become hazy or unclear.
Objects Appear Smaller: Objects may seem smaller than they are.
Fluctuating Vision: Changes in vision clarity, from clear to blurry.
Hallucinations: Seeing things that aren’t present.
Difficulty Seeing Objects: Challenges in seeing things directly in front of you.
Causes and Risk Factors of Age-Related Macular Degeneration
Understanding what leads to AMD can help in its prevention and management. The primary causes and risk factors include:
Genetic Factors
Genetics play a significant role in AMD. If your family has a history of AMD, you might be at a higher risk of developing it.
Environmental Factors
Smoking: Tobacco use significantly increases the risk of AMD.
Obesity: Excess weight can contribute to the development of AMD.
High Blood Pressure: Hypertension is a known risk factor.
Poor Diet: Diets high in saturated fats may raise your risk.
Diagnosis of Age-Related Macular Degeneration
Eye Exams
Regular eye exams are crucial for early detection of AMD. During an eye exam, your eye doctor will perform various tests to check the health of your retina and macula.
Imaging Tests
OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography): Provides detailed images of the retina.
Fluorescein Angiography: Uses dye to visualize blood vessels in the retina.
Treatment Options for Age-Related Macular Degeneration
While there is no cure for AMD, several treatments can help manage the condition and slow its progression.
For Dry AMD
Dietary Supplements: Vitamins and minerals can slow the progression of dry AMD.
Lifestyle Changes: Quitting smoking and maintaining a healthy weight.
For Wet AMD
Anti-VEGF Injections: Medications injected into the eye to reduce abnormal blood vessel growth.
Photodynamic Therapy: A laser treatment to destroy abnormal blood vessels.
Preventing Age-Related Macular Degeneration
Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle
Balanced Diet: Eat foods rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids.
Regular Exercise: Stay active to help reduce your risk.
Avoid Smoking: Smoking cessation is crucial.
Regular Eye Check-Ups
Regular eye check-ups can help detect AMD early, allowing for prompt treatment and better management of the condition.
Living with Age-Related Macular Degeneration
Adapting to Vision Changes
Adapting to vision changes can be challenging but manageable with the right strategies. Tools like magnifiers, large-print books, and specialized lighting can help.
Support and Resources
Many organizations and support groups are available for people with AMD. They offer resources, advice, and community support to help manage the condition.
Conclusion
Age-Related Macular Degeneration can be a daunting condition, but understanding it better equips us to manage and prevent it. Regular eye exams, a healthy lifestyle, and timely treatment can significantly improve quality of life. If you suspect you have AMD or are at risk, don’t hesitate to consult with an eye specialist.

Understanding Dry AMD
Dry AMD occurs when the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp vision, deteriorates over time. This condition is characterised by the accumulation of drusen, yellow deposits that form under the retina. Unlike wet AMD, dry AMD progresses slowly and does not involve the growth of abnormal blood vessels. Early detection and proactive management are essential to slowing the progression of this condition and maintaining vision quality.
Latest Advances in Dry AMD Treatment
Ayurvedic Herbal Remedies  Triphala: A potent combination of three fruits – Amalaki, Bibhitaki, and Haritaki – Triphala is known for its antioxidant properties and its ability to strengthen retinal health. Regular use of Triphala can help in reducing oxidative stress and supporting overall eye function.  Bilberry Extract: Rich in anthocyanins, bilberry extract enhances microcirculation within the eyes and protects retinal cells from damage. It is a key component of natural dry AMD treatment.
Nutritional Support  Antioxidant-Rich Diet: Consuming foods high in antioxidants such as green leafy vegetables, carrots, and berries can help protect the macula from oxidative damage. Nutrients like lutein and zeaxanthin, found in spinach and kale, are particularly beneficial for macular health.  Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Found in flaxseeds, walnuts, and fish oil, omega-3 fatty acids support eye health and reduce inflammation, making them an essential part of dry AMD treatment.
Eye Exercises  Simple eye exercises such as palming, blinking, and focusing on distant objects can improve eye circulation and reduce strain. These exercises are beneficial for maintaining healthy eyes and supporting dry AMD treatment.
Ayurvedic Therapies  Panchakarma: This detoxification therapy helps eliminate toxins from the body and balance the doshas. Treatments like Netrabasti (eye bath) with medicated ghee nourish the eyes, enhance vision clarity, and are effective in dry AMD treatment.  Nasya: Nasal administration of herbal oils can help clear the channels and improve ocular health. This treatment supports better vision and reduces symptoms of dry AMD.
