SUNDAY MUSIC VIDEO MATINEE: “Dumb Angel” live in concert— https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1adaRT-TVpU   …This surrealistic pop song* came to me from a dream about where I grew up in Avis, Pennsylvania. In the dream, Brian Wilson showed up at my door, smoking a cigarette and driving a big car. He drove me and some kids to a Bible study at the CMA Church in Avis (now torn down). In the church sat Lewis Carroll, and near him was Elvis Presley, crying with his head in his arms. How I de-coded this dream is another story. 

In the context the word “angel” references the old Hebrew definition of cherubim as God’s messengers. The angel in this song is dumb, as in not being able to speak, yet he still delivers a message. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1adaRT-TVpU

* “Dumb Angel” was also the original working title of The Beach Boys masterwork, SMILE. On a cosmic jukebox, this song would play next to songs from the 1967-68 SMILEY SMILE/WILD HONEY/FRIENDS period of Beach Boys.

“mhmm, remember when you thought people in Australia could predict the future just because they were 20 hours ahead?

“I didn’t know back then!”

“yeah, yeah excuses excuses.”

I’ve said this before, but I always found stories that frame heaven as “evil” and hell as “good” (or less bad) to be genuinely boring. I like more nuanced approaches to each realm.

I understand that for a lot of people, Christianity is a religion they like to criticize and mock, but I feel like if you don’t even understand the fundamentals of the religion, why even attempt to critique it?

 —This is a bizarre love letter to my home state of Pennsylvania, delivered with jangly-guitar power pop, funky reggae, surf rock, synth-pop, and a bit of psychedelia. The title cut features the late Davy Jones (Monkees) giving zany narration while a progressive rock band jams with a string quartet. It recalls "spy movie music" with a twist of espionage in Amish country.

The song "(I Wanna Be In) Pennsylvania" is an ode much like the "American tales" by The Beach Boys, with Mike Roe (The 77s) singing a creamy cameo vocal on the bridge. Another highlight is "Dumb Angel,” based on a dream in which Brian Wilson was Sunday driving around Avis PA (where I grew up). Bonus tracks include a cover of Mike Nesmith's "Silver Moon" co-produced by John Bechdel (Ministry, Killing Joke) + 5 live cuts at The Cell Block in Williamsport PA, opening for that great American band, The Badlees.
