Goatsucker (飲山羊乳者)

The nightjar hangs close to the sheep or goat, to suckle milk at the breast. In turn the sheep eagerly awaits the night, and her nightjar's whisper of newfound secrets.

An art style study I did based on Takato Yamamoto (山本タカト), known for his heisei aesthetic paintings (a fusion of Japanese ukiyo-e x gothic art).

Takato Yamamoto's line drawings are solidly constructed, a blend of detailed nature and smooth, realistic faces. Though, his compositions typically frame characters up closer to bring out the beauty of their faces.

The eyes are often monolid in shape, with a red underline and colorless irises.

The Demon Queen

This is another work from 2-3 years ago, once again with my old watermark "Weiss" that I used throughout the pandemic. I had made this for a graphic contest hosted in Wattpad by the username written at the bottom of the cover. I won the round with this!

This is actually one of my favorites simply because of all the effort I poured into coloring every single one of those roses in the background. I wanted to make the roses stand out yet blend in at the same time, and after trying out different methods to change their color, I ultimately decided on painting over them manually and using different layering techniques in order to still maintain a realistic look. It took a lot of my energy, but when I finally finished, I realized that it actually completed the overall look and elevated the entire cover, so I was very satisfied.

This project involved more color-correcting and balancing than anything else. I also had quite the challenge with the tricky text placements, but had lots of fun selecting the fonts. I was happy that although I used four different fonts, all of them looked extremely cohesive and well-distributed.

Currently reading Shelley's Posthumous Poems

Deciding which piece will make the 6th and final addition to my translation portfolio has me overthinking nothing and everything at the same time.

Tragedy, classical themes, historical forms, the Romantic and the Renaissance, the challenge to poetic translation: these are the backbone of the portfolio, the swells in the sea of poetry which have steered and carried me along for the past year. Intentionally chosen, a reflection of my intended specialisation, a showcase of my skills.

But even though I know that this portfolio makes up only one half of the tragedy-comedy divide and that I have only just begun to explore satire to the fullest, leaving it for later translation, that horrid thought of 'Couldn't you have done more?' besieges my thoughts, pressing me with that maxim of productivity culture: Quantity, over quality.

Perhaps it is a remnant of growing up on the internet in a time when a shift from niche interests to broad outreach encouraged showing a range of your creative skills, as opposed to honing in on just one. Whether its rooted in this or latent perfectionism, best beat back the looming tempest and sail on right ahead.
