silly hat, but this time presenting it like a stone cold professional:
FLIPPY CHEVRON HAT!
Tumblr media
Except for the earflaps, I feel like I accidentally got the classic Link angle down somehow. Maybe a little more volume, but other than that, it’s pretty good.

Wanted to finish this hat before work but, alas. I got one entire earflap done (including the icord but luckily not the tassel) before i tried it on again and decided i really didnt like the earflap. Way too short, even after restarting it partway through to make it longer... i want something that covers the sides of my face too for a little more wind protection, but thats proving weirdly difficult. But also, the hat itself is just slightly too long and i almost want to take out the cast offs too and knit another few inches so that i can put a pompom on and make it nice and slouchy. Not sure if thats too much ? Idk, definitely needs some redoing though, sigh

When I swatch this yarn* as a rectangle, I get 9 stitches in 4.5" (or 2 stitches/inch).
Tumblr media
When I try to make an earflap with the same yarn, same needles, same tensioning technique, 4.5" is 11 stitches (i.e. ~2.4 stitches/inch).
Tumblr media
What am I not understanding?
Say I just keep going until the earflaps are the size I need them to be, and then use my rectangular gauge to calculate how many stitches to cast on for the front and the back, will I end up with a hat that's way too big because once I join in the round my gauge will go back up?
I.e., total circumference of the hat is 20". Each earflap is 5.5". The front is also 5.5", and the back is 3.5". If I keep going, say it takes me 13 stitches to reach 5.5" for each earflap. That's a total of 26 stitches for both earflaps. Then for the front I cast on 5.5" x 2 sts/inch = 11 stitches, and for the back I cast on 3.5" x 2 sts/inch = 7 stitches. That's a total of 44 stitches. I join in the round, and because I'm not doing any increases, I get 2 stitches/inch. That will give me a hat that's 22 inches around, i.e. too big. I am confused.
I think I'm just gonna have to do it and see what happens. It's a good thing I have a second skein, because I see a lot of frogging in this skein's future. First I need to get a metal circular needle though: it turns out polyester is super grabby and doesn't play well with my wood needles.
*Red Heart Boutique Chic, essentially identical to Bernat Blanket.

Why does it seem to me that Artificer is a hunter from Canada, and saint is a simple resident of Russia. God, how can I see it now
(If anything, I'm really trying to replicate some Russian clothes and it's all tied up with winter.)
I just wanted to put a hat with earflaps on saint, I do not know how it happened

I knit crooked!
Tumblr media
By which I mean: My rows are not perpendicular to my columns.
No big deal, you say, you can block that out no problem.
Unfortunately, the yarn I'm hoping to use to make this hat is a super bulky polyester chenille (Red Heart Boutique Chic, essentially identical to Bernat Blanket), which I'm pretty sure can't be blocked, and the pattern and the large size of the stitches makes the asymmetry pretty glaring:
Tumblr media
This swatch was particularly bad, at least partly because of the increase I was using. Lifted increases seem to be the worst:
Tumblr media
While yarnovers knit through the back loop come out no more crooked than my plain square swatch:
Tumblr media
I am a self-taught knitter who has only been knitting for a year and a half, so I have no idea if this is normal or not. All feedback welcome!
Note that none of these swatches have been blocked or pulled in any way: the tape is just there to hold the swatch aligned to my graph paper. The blue yarn is the same as the pink yarn, just in a different colour. I will post all of my increase swatches in a separate post.
