how did you get started making music, tools-wise?
I've talked about this a bit before and I don't necessarily recommend doing this, so skip the following two paragraphs and go right to the one under the break if you actually want the method I recommend
I lied to a girl I liked from my school and told her that, because I could play guitar I could also play piano, so I could teach her to play piano. both of these statements were lies.
I had to panic and learn both guitar and piano one week ahead of the lessons I was giving her as an excuse to hang out. so I self-taught in a haze of panic and "maybe she'll like me" (she did not) (but she kind of did) (but she was bicurious) (but she was wishy-washy on if she wanted to get together and her parents didn't like me) (and her parents were homophobic) (I think she might have texted me at one point years down the line to tell me she had a girlfriend but it was after I deleted our text history and I'm chronically unable to remember to put people's names into my contacts so who knows)
but that's all an aside. that's a bad method.
anyway if you want to start making music in earnest, doing what I did when I got serious about making songs instead of trying to impress girls whose parents wanted to destroy me with their minds here's a better answer
go acquire FL Studio. it's apparently really easy to do this because people have been acquiring it for years, or so I've heard. FL is good for learning because you've got 20 years worth of free tutorials available to you on youtube to dig through and plenty of stock vsts to play with out of the box
FL Studio is, realistically, the only tool you actually need to start making music. you could get away with less, but it's what I used, and as long as you don't pick up Specific Bad Habits, your experience with it will transfer to other DAWs if you decide to switch it later
that's all, really
if you go this route, the golden rule I'm going to impart on you right now is that you need to have a limiter on your songs. the default FL studio song templates have one, so you should keep it until you know enough to know why you might adjust something like that
it doesn't matter if it sounds fine in the editor without a limiter. everyone thinks it's not a big deal at the time, but as you get more experienced, there's literally nothing short of getting in legal trouble that you'll regret more than realising that your old work is almost entirely unsalvageable because you didn't put a limiter on it and now half of the audio is just lost data to clipping
I'm gonna put a few more recommendations for things I've used, just so you can consider them if you need something else to chew on. everything past this point is entirely optional and you'll do just fine with FL Studio alone. in fact, probably don't worry about everything below the line
-=-
items marked with [F] are free.
DIGITAL AUDIO WORKSTATIONS THAT AREN'T FL
for tracker-based editing and chiptunes, use Renoise. you'll either love or hate trackers, and while they have a steeper learning curve than piano roll DAWs, they might come more naturally to you. I personally think that Renoise is a lot of fun to use. it kinda has an "addictive" quality to it, as funny as that is to say
for quickly sketching songs, use [F]Jummbox. it's an html workstation (multiplatform!) that writes your sketches to a url, meaning it's pretty easy to collaborate on musical sketches. Jummbox is good for making chiptune style instrumentals, but what makes it especially accessible is the fact that it works on a piano roll system, which will be familiar to you if you're working in FL
for writing sheet music, I recommend starting with [F]Musescore. I'll warn you right now that there aren't really any good notation editors and you're making lesser-of-evils decisions when you pick any of them, but it's probably the best compromise out there right now. it's the one I use when I need to hand something to a physical musician. you can also export pieces as midi, although there's better ways to do that lol
-
VSTs
if you can acquire Pianoteq, do that. if you feel uncomfortable with acquiring it, [F]Keyzone Classic is free and can sound pretty nice with a bit of work, but you really have to learn to work with it
if your workstation can handle it performance-wise, go pick up [F]Vital - Spectral Warping Wavetable Synth. there's tons of free presets for this out there and it sounds good. cool synth. Serum: Advanced Wavetable Synthesizer is also good and has plenty of presets, but it's on the pricy side, so consider how comfortable you are with [finding a friend to buy it for you]
[F]Decent Sampler doesn't do much out of the box, because it's just a tool for playing sample banks, but if you go to [F]Pianobook, you can find tons of weird and fun sample packs of just about everything you can imagine. sounds derived from folk instruments, industrial equipment, lego sets, stylophones, choirs, whatever. incredibly useful.
Valhalla VintageVerb. this is the reverb plugin. you want this one. [F]Valhalla Super Massive is also good but it's more focused on alien-sounding reverb effects and enormous spaces, so it's kind of got a niche use case and you should be a little careful with it
if you've heard a lo-fi hip hop song on youtube, it probably used [F]iZotope Vinyl. this one can save you a lot of time if you're going for that sound because it comes with all the little vinyl flourishes outside of compression (like dust crackling) that you'd otherwise have to add yourself
[F]Genny VST is advertised as giving a genesis/megadrive sound, but what actually makes it shine is that it's an actual synth emulating the YM2612 and SN76489 sound chips. this means you can create your own sounds that work within those specs, which is a lot of fun! definitely beats just using samples, if you ask me
-
HARSH VSTS THAT I PERSONALLY LIKE BUT WHICH ALSO MIGHT !!HURT!! YOU. SO BE VERY CAREFUL USING THESE.
[F]Tritik Krush is a bitcrushing plugin. it does a good job of bitcrushing and downsampling. I use it a lot in my songs, but you've really gotta know how to keep this one under control, because it's fully capable of making painful sounds on accident and can completely devour your mix
[F]FSA Latcher is a gorgeous noisebox. it screams in horrible ways and makes dying machine noises in various colours. this is the musical equivalent of working with radioactive material, so be extremely careful using this in anything you don't want to hurt the listener's ears
girlfriend just told me I have to recommend [F]Noise Engineering Ruina to you if I'm making a category with this heading. I don't personally use it, but she likes it (she's better at music than I am) and it's free, so you should go pick it up. "it annihilates sounds very deliciously" (maybe I should use it)
-
hope that helps a bit!

I don't know if this is your area, but I feel like you might at least have followers who might know. Not to put too fine a point on it, but how do you learn an instrument if you're poor? I sing, so I'm not new to music overall, but I'd love to be able to back myself up and I keep running into a cost barrier. Sorry, I know it's super random, I just keep getting demoralized by sticker shock everywhere I look. 💀
--
Is the problem the instrument or lessons?
First, pick something common because there's more free tutorial shit, and more people will have tried and abandoned that instrument, meaning there are more cheap ones floating around.
I actually just got rid of an acoustic guitar someone foisted on me. It was collecting dust in my attic until somebody on our local Buy Nothing requested one for some poor kid she knows. You can probably find entirely free instruments if you find the right decluttering/free giveaway spaces, but it depends on where you live. Where I live, you could have 20 free pianos tomorrow if you wanted them. (Of course, you'd need to transport them, you'd need the space, and you'd need to know how to tune them—which is exactly why so many are available for free.)
If the issue is lessons, pick something that's easy to self teach. I'm told acoustic guitar is pretty easy relative to, say, a banjo or a lute. My only experience learning an instrument was a brief foray into lever harp, so I don't really know about that part, but you can find plenty of "10 [most whatever] instruments to [whatever]" listicles. A lot of students start with shit like recorders, but if you want to accompany yourself, I suppose you're looking at ukulele or guitar.
There are some crappy but supposedly not awful sounding guitars on Amazon for like $100, so it also depends how poor is poor.

I've been trying to learn the White Space song on piano.
I don't know how to play piano in this life, but we've had one for as long as I can remember, so I thought it'd be worth a shot to try. That song seemed simple enough that maybe I could just find a video tutorial since I can't get proper piano lessons or anything.
And I did! It's a lot harder than I thought it'd be (other people just make it look so easy!), but that's okay!
Ever since I kinfirmed, I've been missing everyone and everything, and wanted to find something I could do that could make me feel home again, and... This is helping me.
It's been a slow process, and I'm still not very good at it (I've only figure out a few notes), but it's progress nonetheless, and I'm really happy.

The Digital Transformation of Education: A Close Look at the Rise of Online Language Tutorials
Tumblr media
In recent years, technology has significantly transformed the educational landscape, enabling the rise of innovative learning approaches that offer flexibility, personalization, and efficiency. One notable example of this shift is the burgeoning popularity of online English tutoring. Through platforms like AmazingTalker, the barriers of time zones, geographical locations, and physical classrooms are being eliminated. Learners based in Phoenix, for example, can conveniently access an Phoenix Chinese lesson near me, a Phoenix Japanese lesson near me, a Phoenix Korean lesson near me, or even a Phoenix Piano lesson near me all from the comfort of their homes. Such advancements not only democratize access to diverse learning opportunities but also empower learners to take charge of their educational journey. And it’s not just about learning foreign languages, you can even master new skills like playing the piano or learning German with the Phoenix German lesson near me. Ultimately, the digital transformation powered by platforms like AmazingTalker is shaping a future where learning is more accessible, engaging, and enjoyable than ever before.
Disruptive Technology in Traditional Classroom Education
The landscape of traditional classroom education has been radically reshaped due to the rapid and continuing evolution of technology. One major change includes the shift from conventional to multimedia teaching.
Multimedia in the Classroom
Modern classrooms are increasingly utilizing multimedia resources to improve teaching techniques and learning experiences. Interactive whiteboards, video presentations, and online quizzes have replaced chalk, textbook, and traditional testing methods. These resources have not only added a fun element to learning but also cater to the different learning styles, maintaining students' attention and improving their understanding of concepts.
Internet and Research
Undeniably, the internet has transformed the face of research. Gone are the days when students were required to spend hours in libraries to gather information. Today, they can access a world of information at their fingertips. Search engines like Google, educational websites, and online journals have made it a lot easier to find, extract, and analyze information. However, this also demands digital literacy skills to discern credible from non-credible sources and avoid plagiarism.
Transition from Traditional Books to E-books
The advancement of technology has led to the rise of e-books, threatening the existence of traditional books. Students are increasingly finding e-books more convenient due to their portability and easy accessibility. Instead of lugging around heavy backpacks, they can carry an entire library on their digital devices. E-books also allow features like text search, dictionary look-up, and digital bookmarking that enhance the reading experience. However, traditional books are still preferred by some students due to the tactile experience they provide, which e-books could not replicate. A balance between the two, depending on the context and personal preference, can provide the best teaching and learning outcomes.
To conclude, while technology has disrupted traditional classroom education, it certainly has brought many positive changes that are transforming the teaching and learning process. However, the end result depends on the effective and responsible use of these advanced tools.

Week Seven
The aim of week 7 is to learn a short composition on piano that makes use of both hands, to give me an insight into how skills on a piano are translated into composition. For this I learnt a version of fly me to the moon that I thought was appropriate to my skills level. There are many ways to play this song, ranging from complete beginner single note melody to jazz connoisseur, however, I choose something in the middle but a little on the easy side, from a pianist's perspective. I was taught it as a single note melody in my left hand and a single note bassline on my right, using my music theory knowledge and my knowing of the C major scale I converted these single bass notes into triad chords (thanks to the music theory lessons) for more interesting harmonic content. I practiced this, from the start of the week to the last day, playing on repeat for roughly an hour, and finally recorded me playing it on the last day. This not only served as a challenge but made me feel as if I had gained an insight into how compositions can be arranged on a piano. This was made harder by having to play the chords in correct form which means that I would be using pinkie, middle finger and thumb, this is used because it allows pianists to switch chords and fingers quickly. Playing and learning fly me to the moon gave me the opportunity to see how modal interchange can be incorporated into a piece to create more, slightly unorthodox, and unique resolutions. Learning new compositions is a good way to improve your skill and take writing tips from the best writers. It's also very important in various jobs in the industry to have many songs in your arsenal to perform.
When writing notation, you must be careful to consider the direction of the stems, when above the middle note of the stave they must point down (look like a p) and when below the middle line in the stave they point upwards (look like a d). Remember that semibreves do not have stems. It is important to remember that when writing music notation in 4/4 the 1st and 3rd beat must be obvious because these are the stressed beats, in other words, don’t beam across these. Beaming is when the stems of the notes are grouped together to make reading it easier, however the only notes that are beamed are quavers and semiquavers. When deciding whether beams go above or below the stave, remember to use the direction of the note which is furthest from the middle line. The beam should also tilt in the general direction the notes’ pitch.

name: Elijah Ford gender & pronouns: Cis Man | He/him age & date of birth: 31 years old | December 10th, 1990 neighborhood: Berry Hill time living in nashville: 12 years occupation: Independent Producer, Song/Music writer
BACKGROUND.
The first born son of the Ford family, Elijah always felt like that title came with a certain level of responsibility. Cliche, sure, but it was a feeling that stayed resonated deep in his bones and it only got stronger the older he became. A constant pressure to be on top of things, to know better, to do more, and that there was always room for improvement. Especially when it came to their father, who he never saw eye to eye with. Maybe it was his protective nature, always sticking up for his mother when their father would start arguments. Perhaps he saw through the man’s words to who the liar he really was. Once it was revealed that his father was unfaithful to his mother, it was not as big of a surprise as it probably should have been. When they divorced it was easy to choose to stay with his mother and sister.
Music was always a passion, from the first song he heard on the radio to creating riffs with his sister at any given moment. To help quell his musical needs, he started piano lessons at a young age. Little did his parents know, it would set him on the path to his future career. As he got older it became more apparent that he had a keen ear for sounds, pitches, and matching words to bring a song to life. It started with Ryan, who was obviously a talent waiting to be discovered. He could help fill in blanks and they worked together to bring musical visions to life. Eventually that turned to local bands and online artists looking for help. Late at night he would be learning how to mix beats, loop voices together, and piece together songs instead of studying. Over the years he taught himself how to use equipment and software through trial and error and online tutorials. He used his money from his minimum wage high school job to buy more and more equipment to mess around with.
After he graduated, he stuck around home - working and saving to move to Nashville someday. Besides, he couldn’t imagine living far away from his family. Most of all, he couldn’t imagine going to Nashville without Ryan. Sure, she was his little sister, but in a lot of ways she was one of his best friends. There was no one in the world he believed in more than her and when she was finally discovered all he could say was it took them long enough. He moved to Music City, and while she began her career recording her first album - he started his by beginning to make a name for himself with up and coming artists. It took some work, but eventually his name started to hold recognition and it only elevated more when he helped produce Ryan’s second album. Soon he had regular work and began writing songs and music on the side to sell.
At some point along the way, he met Salem and they became a force in his life that he never wanted to leave. They worked together well, and with both of them working long hours they always seemed to find time to make sure they could spend quality time together (a love language they shared). Eventually they moved in together and made a home together. It’s still new but so far it’s been one of the best choices he ever made. Someday he hopes to pop the question, but after seeing not only his parents' marriage fail but Ryan’s as well, he is hesitant to rush into anything. Presently, he’s living in Berry Hill in a nice sized house with Salem and (recently) his sister after the end of her marriage. His schedule is kept busy where he works long periods of times with artists and has off periods where he can work on his side projects. At some point he started a dorky little band that he records nerdy, silly songs and covers with then posts them on the internet for fun with no consistency. He’s just trying to live his life, be successful, and take care of the people he loves in anyway he can.

Okay so if you want to play classical and movie music, definitely go with the e piano and not the keyboard, the big difference being weighted keys. Both those genres are very expressive and you need weighted keys for that. If you wanted to play in a band and do more synth type stuff I’d recommend unweighted keys. But for the learning process I’d start with weighted either way.
Also, everyone learns differently, so for some people, learning chords and other parts of music theory may be helpful, whilst some others just want to learn how to play and don’t necessarily want to “understand” what they are doing. Or maybe the understanding part comes later, when you’ve played for a while and have gotten a feeling for it and also trained your hearing in the process. Also, generally speaking chords are more commonly used in pop music. If you’d want to learn about how classic is build, I’d recommend looking into scales or modes, but that may be a bit to much for now.
For now I think if you just want to have some fun and do something easy, watch a youtube tutorial and try to play along, but if you really want to learn it I think piano lessons would be the way to go (if you can afford those of course).
My e-paino is on the way! Yea i of course looked into it a bit prior and decided that wighted keys would be useful. Great that this was right! 😂
I feel like I maybe want a general overlook onto this? Like I feel like understanding everything could be really useful. But I guess most of it will come over time of course!
Yea I think focusing on fun is important especially in the beginning, otherwise I might lose interest too quick (knowing me). For now I will try it out a bit and maybe I do get lessons at some point.
Thank you for the help 💚

Learning Music Log - Day 1:
I am someone that has never played an instrument, never been part of band, never even known how to start. For the past year I’ve been fascinated with Lo-Fi music, so I figured I’d try making some myself. Again, with no experience in anything myself, I figured I’d need some tools to make electronic music. An old friend of mine from high school had some songs signed and sold through Beatport, and I remember him using FL Studio at home. Just messing around with the tools was interesting to watch, but the interface and process always intimidated me.
Another artist I follow on my art blog, Artem Solop, is also big into making his own electronic music and beats. Although I do not know him personally, I have always liked his style. The unique thing about his method, is that he utilizes his Nintendo DS and Switch as instruments. Synths, Compressors, and Drum Machines have always intrigued me, but I could never tell one thing from the other, and here was this guy using them from his Nintendo consoles to make something sounds good. Cables routed from one system to another – how does he do it?
I figured I’d plunge in headfirst – well, as “headfirst” as I could while still adhering to baby steps…I know the hobby can be expensive if left unchecked.
Tumblr media
I bought KORG Gadget for Nintendo Switch about 2 weeks ago to start this journey – an inexpensive grab through Amazon for just 30$. I have no idea what it is, but it’s what Artem seems to use in his videos. The tool is described as such:
-Robust music composition/production tools in a compact cartridge
-Simple to use and easy to understand; anyone can create music anywhere and everywhere
-16 different synthesizer and drum machine gadgets with additional DLC gadgets available
-Gadgets have retro-inspired tactile control knobs that you can turn by rotating the Joy-Con controllers
And to be honest, it did not disappoint. It was a great way to wrap my mind around the synths, tracks, and “scenes” as they are laid out in the simple to use interface. I was determined to begin this journey in a self-taught, but organized manner. I had googled a few things before starting anything:
1. Simple music theory – I had no idea that notes/scales determine how well something sounds. A lot of you may think that that’s obvious, but again, my music knowledge started in 4th grade with a mandatory recorder recital and ended with the 5 colors on the guitar hero guitar. At the most basic level, I learned that scales could be set (C Major, A minor, etc.) and most tools used to create music (a digital audio workstation, or DAW for short) had a setting to allow “helpers” that would highlight keys in any given scale. From there on, I figured out that experimenting and playing randomly sounded better if I followed the scale guidelines.
2. How different chords on a piano/keyboard evoke different emotions depending on what scale you’re in. Major chord happy. Minor chord sad.
3. After talking to my fiancé (a former band geek that played flute!) I also learned that the concept of “chords” did not apply to the flute, so I also realized how different instruments were from one another…
Aside from those few things, I didn’t really look into anything else before attempting to ‘craft’ a song on the Switch.
Immediately, I could tell that the different synth gadgets varied and specialized in different things. The Marseille gadget had some great piano, electric piano, and orchestral instrument presets; the Helsinki gadget was great at ambient/relaxing sounds; the London drum gadget was great at…well…drum sounds and beats! Each of the city inspired gadgets brought something unique to the table. The Switch’s controls were intuitive. Copying and pasting, moving notes, playing tracks vs. just playing scenes was something that I was able to pick up in around 30 minutes without even ‘sniffing’ the user guide. By messing around I actually learned more about notes, half beats, and chord progressions all on my own.
Before I knew it, I had crafted a song that was about 3 minutes long. Deep, ambient intro, catchy simple melody, and the typical ‘lo-fi’ drums set to 79 BPM. I was impressed at how good it sounded. I knew there were things I was messing up, or could probably do better, but I was still proud of it.
Tumblr media
Hopping on to YouTube I found a TON of tutorials covering music theory, lo-fi beat making lessons, “dos and don’ts”, best plugins for DAWs and more. Before long, I invested in an AKAI Professional MPK Mini Play USB MIDI Keyboard controller (hastily, as it seems like the Arturia Minilab might have been a better grab? Lmk), got set up with a subscription to Melodics HQ to learn the basics of playing a keyboard, and installed FL Studio on my computer. After a week of using the Korg Gadget on Switch, I found that FL Studio had a bunch of the same principals in its interface, and I found myself digging in with minimal research into how to use the tool.
By purchasing the Korg Gadgets online, I was able to continue using the same tools I was already familiar with on the Switch inside of FL Studio’s more robust interface.
I was able to recreate the song I made on the Switch in FL Studio. This was a great way to familiarize myself with the tool in an almost step-by-step tutorial I had already made for myself.
After I had gotten a grip with using FL Studio at a basic level, I decided to try mirroring some Lo-fi beat YouTube tutorial videos. To my surprise, I found myself not really liking the final product, even after following the instructor’s guidelines. I don’t think I am a fan of “oh you NEED to do this and this for it to be a good song”. I do think that a basic understanding of music theory is key before even starting, but I don’t know how I feel about new and upcoming musicians following strict rules about how something should sound when it’s literally an art form used for expression and fun.
I was happier with the first song I made just messing around on my Switch than the song I made trying to emulate a Lo-fi beat guided by a professional producer on YouTube… and it got me thinking…I think Giorgio Moroder was right in that one Daft Punk song:
“Once you free your mind about a concept of
Harmony and of music being correct
You can do whatever you want
So nobody told me what to do
And there was no preconception of what to do”
I’m looking forward to learning more – after all, it’s only been a few days!
-Franco
