hc // 🧍‍♂️...easycore
tfw birvor's not only vanilla as hell, but his soundboard/sound aesthetic is easycore.
Soundboard as in, not really like a playlist where the lyrics necessarily matter or have to relate to the character, but the general feel/energy of the song matches the character. Or in his case, what would probably be playing during his (a bardbarian's) rages.
ex: dear maria, count me in // the downfall of us all // right now // the trick the devil did // satellite // grand theft autumn
This also my cue to have him in some cringe punk garage band in a modern au and @infernaliscor is definitely innit, and he def works at Chiles.

Think Elvis would be proud?"

Fluorescents - Scream It At Me
For as much as pop-punk has been back in the mainstream, there’s one kind that I don’t think has been represented — neon pop-punk. In the late 00s, and early 2010s, bands like Forever The Sickest Kids, All Time Low, Every Avenue, Hit The Lights, and many others, dominated the pop-punk scene, and it was called “neon pop-punk,” named for how a lot of the bands dressed in neon colors, how bright and synth-heavy their music was, and how they placed a lot more emphasis on the “pop” than punk. I, for one, absolutely loved it, and a lot of favorite bands from that era came from the neon scene. In recent years, as pop-punk has been getting bigger in the mainstream again, I’ve noticed that a few bands have been either turning more into a catchy and neon-ish band, or they’re immediately jumping into that sound. State Champs’ last album, 2022’s Kings Of The New Age, is their catchiest album yet, and bands like Stand Atlantic, Broadside, and Honey Revenge are releasing albums that are way more pop than punk.
The latest band I found in this vein is one that I’ve been subtly following for a while on TikTok, and that’s Chicago outfit Fluorescents. They finally dropped a debut album, entitled Scream It At Me, and it’s composed of songs they’ve released within the last couple of years. These guys caught my attention by having a very pop-focused version of pop-punk, and reminding me of a lot of 00s bands, whether it’s the lyrics, vocals, melodies, and their overall sound. They also have a few other subtle influences, like some easycore and hip-hop in spots, but they mainly have a very pop-influenced sound. I didn’t know their debut was coming out until a few days before, but I was ecstatic, and to no surprise, I’m head over heels for this thing. This is one of the best albums I’ve heard all year, and one of the best pop-punk albums I’ve heard in a long while.
These guys take everything I love about the genre, especially back when I really listened to it, and make it so well. They also subtly modernize the sound, too, especially with the lyrics, but it doesn’t sound immediately dated or cringy. The biggest thing that works here, and why I keep returning to this album, are its hooks. This thing has hooks for days, and despite being a 34-minute album, I’ve played this a few times in a row before, just because I can’t get enough. It’s so sugary sweet, you might get a toothache from this record. From front to back, I always have a smile on my face when I listen to this record. Every song really sticks out, and that’s a rare feat on a pop-punk record these days.
It helps that this band has a few other tricks up their sleeve, whether it’s a few different vocalists, and a sound that manages to have the songs flow together quite well without running together. They make each song stand out enough, and it works so well. Lyrically, these guys are nothing that special, but a lot of these lyrics remind me of bands I used to listen to back in the day. One of their vocalists reminds me a ton of the vocalist of Hit The Lights, and it just takes me back almost 16 years ago listening to their sophomore album in my sophomore year of high school. They just have great chemistry, and the multiple vocalists help the album from getting stale.
I just really love this record, but it’s a mixture of nostalgia for this sound that I forgot how much I loved, and just how well done it is. I usually find a few pop-punk albums each year that I love a lot, especially after getting back into the genre around four or five years ago, and this may be the best one, unless something random sneaks up behind it. A couple of other great pop-punk albums have come out, too, like the new Neck Deep record that came out in January, for some reason, but Fluorescents is easily one of the best unsigned bands that you’re not listening to.

4 Cool Gay / queer artists and for pride this year (2023)
I wanted to help some queer and ally musicians boost their songs. As a trans-woman I think its important to understand that pride is important as much as change. Focusing on the hardships we have faced is very important but our victories are much more. So here are some (4) artists I (rose) recommend for pride.
Mikie mayo (any/all pronouns).
Mikie mayo (aka bunny boy) is a definitely hard to pin down Philly musician and occasional roller-coaster content creator. Mikie can be seen dabbling anything from indie pop, easycore, scene metalcore with bay area and internet rapper legend Lil B, scene electropop hyperpop, eurodance and dance pop about roller coasters and go karts, to beach pop, generally being pretty much a banger machine. Mikie's music is like ice cream w/ your favorite toppings on a warm summer day, very good and sugary sweet.

We Are The Union
I'm gonna cut to the chase on this one. If you want an emotional experience as a trans woman / transfemme or really any trans person to make you not feel alone and like ska / ska punk listen to Ordinary Life by we are the union. the first time I heard morbid obsessions I was working a part time (as full time really) at home depot in my small hometown in pa. I felt like as a trans woman and generally depressed person I couldn't be myself and go back to school. My boss there was the most transphobic piece of shit, and he always misgendered me and but me down. it wasn't until I quit that job and when I shifted to being myself inspired by my thoughts at the time that I accepted that I was fully a trans woman. I really related and still relate to Miss Reade Wolcott and her struggles with gender identity and be a trans woman in a transphobic world but also like her I am who I am. I would also could relate to jer and their struggles of being boxed in music genres and having what they love constantly undermined and diminished / not taken what I have to say seriously as a queer person.

FFO: New Tone, hoity toity, catbite, Eichlers, Bad operation, Kill Lincoln, etc.
Genres: ska pop, ska punk, alternative ska.

Jisei (leda xo its/its and alexis she/they)
Jisei are the best queergrind band I have ever heard. the most raw queer emotions I have ever heard. Some of the best riffs I have ever heard. Imagine deathcore for the girls and the gays. The duo also make the most real lyrics I have heard in a while. For example one of I think the most topical songs they have had is "Pull Yrself Up by Your Pleasers". Pull Yrself Up by Your Pleasers being about christian nationalism and the alt-right abusing and tearing away the seperation of church and state without seeing a hint of irony. I hate the "Just asking questions" transphobia , and even though that might seem like solely a usa proving that Jisei hailing from vancouver proves that transphobia is a worldwide issue and if so called "cis allies" aren't for us 100+ %, fuck 'em.
FFO: Thotcrime, Sissy xo, hopscotch battlescars, Suicide Silence, and a lovely day for bloodshed.
Genres: Cybergrind, cyberdeath, deathgrind, deathcore, queercore and queergrind
seeyouspacecowboy.
Tumblr media
(band photo by shutter happy jose)
last on the list here we have the one of the most popular queer scenecore bands ever. see you space cowboy. the most gay and hard band at the same time they well as sass as much as hardcore. Picture if saosin, the devil wears prada, or thrice, and/or attack attack! were queer and trans and say exclaimed faggot as fun mosh call. That would be see you space cowboy, started by brother and sister connie and ethan, seeyouspacecowboy is one of the most popular bands in screamo, metalcore and hardcore, and scenecore all at the same time. will excellent songwriting and angsty queer lyrics complimented with crushing riffs and piercing panic chords, seeyouspacecowboy will worm your way into your heart and crush your rib-cage at the same time. As a fan of vocalist connie sgarbossa, she was one of the people who helped me come out as a trans woman in the first place. The fact that a queer trans woman who screamed and force herself to the front inspirational. Yeah the fact we have to be forced to be heard kinda sucks, but it can be done and her presence in the scene made that very well known. Also it kinda helps that they spread the word on trans liberation and mental health from and trans and queer perspective and what can be done to combat transphobia in a very passionate and heartfelt way. I highly recommend their whole catolgue from their sass/whitebelt eras, to their metallic hardcore stuff, to mall scenecore era currently.
Genres: Scenecore, sasscore, whitebelt, queercore, "screamo", mall screamo, metalcore, scene metalcore, hardcore, metallic hardcore.
FFO: attack attack!, tdwp, i set my friends on fire, lacerated, thrice, norma jean, and underoath etc.
pride should be celebrated.
one last thing from a trans woman,
gender doesn't always equal sex.
gendered pronouns / pronouns in general have existed since the beginning of time.
drag queens aren't always trans.
trans people don't care about where you pee and where you are, they just wanna pee in their gendered bathroom.
cis isn't a slur.
terf isn't a slur.
leave trans people alone.

Ouuuu i loveee sharing music
I adore this metal core band , not my mOsttt favourite song but all of their music is incredible.
I have probably heard this song 374748 million times this year. not mad about it. Can cry in the dark to it or just scream the lyrics with your hands to a pal. Sorta bored of it at this point
This is by far my favourite album to listen to at work. i fucking love atilla
Okay definitely heard this one more than covet by basement , and that’s just in the last month…Somehow i’m not a huge fan of Saosin but this song and “They Perched on Their Stilts Pointing and Daring me to Break Costum” fill me with some typa energy i just can’t get enough of. Absolutely my favourite song right now.
Obviously there’s going to be some Deftones on here. Sex sex sexxx, feels feels feeeelsss, i would like to ascend into the abyss to most of their music. One can never get tired of them and there’s nothing else to say about that
I have been very much enjoying some easycore emo pop punk shit recently. Whenever you want a sad boy to wine in your ear , Taking back sunday has got u covered
oooof i’m sO excited about this one, i’d call them prog rock instrumental. their lead guitarist is adorable and she sounds like Tim Henson. i love them both for the feeling their intricate riffs bring me and i truly admire their impossible finger tech.
Please don’t kid nap me i’m in love with grimes and that’s strictly due to her music feeling exactly like the little me inside my heart.
Yes pleaseeee beautiful shoe gaze with drown out post hxc type vocals. (just now realizing i have such a soft spot for all these small town emo boys 🥺
Gotta love deathcore done so smoothly. And my, how i’d let Alex Koehler fuck me with his vocals
I know like 4 people on here and they will not put their energy into this 😂

Shuffle your favorite playlist and post the first five songs that come up. Then copy/paste this ask to your favorite mutuals. 💌💜
Ahh thanks for the ask!! This one's from my easycore playlist and I hope y'all like it! I've also included my favorite lyrics for each song bc why not lol
and now it feels like we just can't stop anymore even if we tried
we're not changing the world, we're making it right
whatever you want in this only life, can we just be proud tonight
let me hope now, let me start again, take it away, forget my name
over again, this is how it goes, every story's made before it's told
sad enough to say that alone i could barely light a match, but together we can burn this place down
sorry about the mess but when we team up, team up, we always seem to bring this place to the ground
ive seen the best and worst of you, but we're sticking through
because without all of the ups and downs we've been through
you know that it's true that i could really be sick and tired of you
ive been asleep at the wheel for the past three years and it's too late to wake up
i never thought id live to see my best laid plans crumble right in front of me
is it my destiny to fail, ive been at this for years and to no avail
the universe has spoken and it won't rest til my spirit's broken
so here's to all the years ive wasted, i never thought i could become this jaded
sometimes the people we admire aren't always who they seem to be
they hide behind a facade of smoke and mirrors with broken smiles and yellow teeth
and only a monster would think to use a second chance as a weapon, there's no excuse
i fear my world is under water, and i. can't. breathe.
i fear my world is under water, my fears consuming me
drift away to a place thats not so harrowing
to the back plate of my mind, digging up what's left to find
with the bar set way too high for me, im bound to sink uncomfortably
im tongue tied inside with a little bit of lust mixed in to mold myself this solitude
i live in pretend like im never gonna need a friend again, ill keep myself intact

Another One Down! – A Bitter Descent
The deluxe version of A Bitter Descent by Providence, Rhode Island-based band, Another One Down!, offers a nice glimpse into the maturity shown in the band’s dedication to their craft. “A Bitter Descent means a lot to us because it marks growth and progression for our band. For a long time we felt like we were seen as sort of a throwaway easycore act and we really wanted to prove that we have so much more to offer with this record,” the band shared. “One of our main goals going into the writing process was to tackle more mature subject matter, primarily overcoming mental health issues which is something each member of the band has struggled with in the past and we feel is important to discuss. Another goal was to explore a wide variety of sounds and vibes while still creating a cohesive record. We’ve always been inspired by bands who are not afraid to give individuality to each song rather than write the same song 12 times, especially when they’re able to do that and still create a well-flowing record. We truly believe that we achieved these goals with A Bitter Descent and we are so proud of how the record came out.” The sound of the band fits somewhere between The Starting Line, Midtown, and Allister, with the punchy production of Hit The Lights. By honing in on their songwriting, while still remaining committed to putting their best foot forward, Another One Down! have made a great, hard-hitting pop-punk record just in time for the beginning of Summer. The album opens cautiously with an organ sound on “Please Don’t Walk Away” before more instruments join the mix over Marcus Simonini’s inviting vocals. The band picks up speed as the song eventually reaches its crescendo to match the lyrical material. “Empty (Without Me)” follows the great, atmospheric opener with a more punishing pop-punk sound accentuated by drummer Ryan Beck’s crisp percussion. The heavy bass guitar groove by Dylan Walsh on “Sulk” gives some variety in the early going of the album, and lends itself well to the band’s attention to detail in the track sequencing. ”Stuck In the Wake” is brilliantly crafted in its delivery as it gradually picks up steam on the chorus and leaves the listener with a great reminder of why they fell in love with pop-punk in the first place. Other songs in the middle of the record like “Headspace” find the band experimenting with different tempos and beats to really aim for variety on this LP. The piano-laced “Erase Your Existence” works well in the track-listing to give the audience a bit of a breather from the hard-hitting attack from the early songs, while “Something Left To Save” just sounds like The Warped Tour during its peak of popularity. ”Chump Charity” is a rare ballad thrown into the sequencing, while “Exeter” brings the band back to a comfortable speed. The blend between “High” and the title track showcase a band willing to take a few calculated risks along the way to keep the listener focused on the variety brought forth. “Betray A Friend” is a new song tacked on to the end of the Deluxe Edition, and it sounds like a sure-fire hit for the genre, and the band pulls it off with near-ease. Another One Down! add on two other acoustic songs to the end of the album that highlights their ability to paint with wide, vibrant strokes in their pop-punk prowess to ensure they remain catchy, but memorable. There’s plenty to love and enjoy on A Bitter Descent and it makes it all worth the ride for this 16-song journey. --- Please consider becoming a member so we can keep bringing you stories like this one. ◎ https://chorus.fm/reviews/another-one-down-a-bitter-descent/

Somewhere City review By Yvette Naomi Meyers - Nov 12, 2019
Intro
What would happen if you took power-pop and sprinkled in easycore breakdowns? Pat and Ryland of Origami Angel decided to find out. Somewhere City, their latest release through Chatterbot Records, seems like Carly Rae Jepsen, Four Year Strong, and Touché Amoré all got together and brought forth a scientifically-improbable child. Despite crossing the boundaries between the notoriously moody emo, pop, and ___core genres, Somewhere City is incredibly positive. The album is littered with odes to love and friendship, and celebrates the simple beauties like getting fast food with your pals. Every song celebrates a victory, whether over those who said you’d never amount to anything or over your own thoughts and behaviors dragging you down. Today, I’ll be exploring the album through a play-by-play of the tracks and try to measure how “objectively” good or bad it may be before giving a final rating.
Play X Play
“Welcome to…” Origami Angel never lets me down. This song serves as the perfect intro to the rest of the album, and sets the tone for the journey through Somewhere City still ahead. I’m a sucker for gang vocals. What can I say?
“24 Hr Drive-Thru” I was impressed to learn there isn’t actually a mandolin on this track. Most Likely Video Game to Have This Song On Its Soundtrack: Mario Kart
“666 Flags” Guiness World Record holder for My Longest Blast Beat Ever Best Place to Drive While Listening to This Song: Off A Cliff
“Doctor Whomst” It’s at this point in writing the review that I realize how much I want to play all of these songs on Guitar Hero. These riffs are going to age way better than the cultural relevance of the “whomst” meme.
“Say Less” F*** the haters. Say Less” is a classic anthem to the people who were big ol’ nerdos in high school and the like. This song would be right at home on MTV in between singles from Paramore and Taking Back Sunday or on the radio after the newest Lana Del Rey Single.
“Escape Rope” This is the song on the album I’m most likely to crowdsurf to. Whenever there’s a new Origami Angel release cycle, someone should start a betting pool for how many Pokémon references there will be.
“The Title Track” In another universe, I could totally see this being a Backstreet Boys song. This is not a bad thing. Almost as good as Title Track by DCFC. (Author’s Note: This is high praise.)
“Skeleton Key” One of the most sincere odes to being In-Love-but-On-Tour Voted Most Likely to Be Heard At Emo Weddings
“Find Your Throne” Including one of the sickest pop-punk riffs of all time was a really damn good idea. Joins the canon of best platonic love songs alongside Blue and Yellow and the Golden Girls theme song
“The Air Up Here” This track reprises the entire album, resulting in the greatest array of backup vocals possibly ever. THE CITY NEVER LETS ME DOOWWWNNNNN
“Objective” Measures
Somewhere City has essentially all of what makes a pop-punk album great. The sheer musicianship is immediately evident, even if you don’t play an instrument. Pat’s drumming has incredible technical skill, and Ryland’s riffs on this album are the most creative in the history of the project so far. His voice displays the widest range we’ve seen from him, and I’m confident that almost anyone would agree that the melodies are catchy to the point of ear-worm status. All of the songs flow into each other well and the overall sound of the album is incredibly cohesive despite the wide variety of influences. Jake Checkoway’s production is incredibly punchy yet maintains clarity and a polished finish. The main criticism I have for Somewhere City lies with the lyrics. Some verses seem ever-so-slightly half baked, and I would have liked to see more of the imagery or clever wordplay that Origami Angel is known for. Even this, however, is debatable since everyone relates to poetry differently, and there is no reliable standard for how much emotional impact any particular set of words has. Overall, Somewhere City is, by all measures, an incredible work of whatever kind of pop they’ll call this eventually. If you want to dance, or listen to something you can sing along to, or if you love hectic pop guitar riffs and breakdowns, Somewhere City is an excellent choice.
Final Score
Pokémon Sword and Shield full 890-size national Pokédex out of Limited 4XX-size Galar Pokédex.

Action/Adventure - Imposter Syndrome One thing I’ve learned as I’ve gotten older, and I’ve absorbed more music over time, is that opinions change. I’ve talked a lot about my feelings on pop-punk over the years, and how I’ve got very complicated thoughts on it; I used to love it, then I fell out of favor with it for a few reasons, namely the genre just not being interesting, as well as a lot of band members and musicians in the genre being outed as predators, and it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Why would I want to support something that breeds the worth of humanity? I realized after a handful of years, though, that the genre has changed a lot in the last five years, give or take, and that type of behavior is no longer tolerated, as well as there are new bands coming out or established bands that changed their sound. I just wasn’t a fan of bands moving into a grungy shoegaze sound, mainly because I find it boring, but it was all the rage in 2012. Nowadays, it seems like bands are pulling from the more pop aspects of the genre, pulling from hip-hop, R&B, and pop music itself, such as Magnolia Park, or the latest State Champs album. I haven’t mentioned the genre of easycore, and how that style of pop-punk has also fallen out of favor, but it’s not that it’s gotten bad, per se, it’s that no one really listens to it anymore. It was popular in the early to mid-00s, but now? It’s a shell of what it was once was, but a few bands are still going strong, like Four Year Strong, although a few new contenders show their faces every couple of years. Belmont released a new record earlier this year that I completely forgot about, and Action/Adventure also released their debut album quite recently. They just dropped their debut album, Imposter Syndrome, and I never a fan of Action/Adventure, but listening to the album, I don’t know why. Maybe their brand of pop-punk / easycore just never did anything for me, but this debut album is great. It’s not quite an album of the year contender for me, at least on the main list, but I would like to talk about this album in some capacity. This album is really good, but it does have some issues that hold it back for me a bit. Let’s start with what I like, though, and there is a lot. For starters, this band’s sound is really solid; they mainly seem to be an easycore band, which is the idea of combining pop-punk and hardcore (or just pop-punk with breakdowns), and there are a lot of nice breakdowns on this record, but there are a good amount of pop-punk tracks, so there’s a good balance and some variety on the album, especially when it’s only a half hour. The album ebbs and flows, but in a really good way. The sound is this album is quite nice, and should satisfy fans of the genre, whether you like regular pop-punk or easycore more. The latter is more important, because  there’s a new band to sink your teeth into, since new easycore bands are hard to find these days. That’s always a great feeling, right? These guys are definitely making a name for themselves in the pop-punk / easycore scene, and rightfully so, as this record is very solid. The only real issues I have with Imposter Syndrome is that it while it does a nice job of combining pop-punk and easycore, it also doesn’t do anything unique or worthwhile with it. It sounds great, don’t get me wrong, but you could just go back and listen to the “classic” easycore albums or bands, because they execute that sound a bit better. I guess it’s worth hearing if you’re a diehard fan of the genre, but if you’re a casual fan, or you’re not into it, you won’t get much out of this, I imagine. I had fun with this album, and it’s an album worth hearing to some degree, but it’s not the best of the album of the year. Not that it needs to be, though. I had fun listening to this, and that’s what matters most. It’s a fun pop-punk record with a good sound, and I didn’t mention the lyrics and vocals being pretty good, too, but there’s a lot of potential within this band. These guys have the potential to do really cool things in the future, and this is only their debut album, especially after only being around for the last handful of years. They haven’t been around super long, but I’m excited to see where they go next. They could totally change the game, just like all of these younger bands that are finally popping up and doing cool things. If you want some good pop-punk to go with your flannel, snapback, and pizza, I guess you can’t go wrong with this album, but if you want something more, let alone something that breaks boundaries a bit, you may want to look elsewhere. These guys have a good sound, but it’s within the pop-punk / easycore formula, and like I said, there’s nothing wrong with that, but I’ve heard too many bands that utilize that cliched formula, so I’m looking for something that thinks outside the box, so to speak.
