Cecilia Vicuña.

Cecilia Vicuña is a chilean artist, poet, activist and filmmaker based in new york.

Her work highlights human rights, cultural homogenistation and ecoligical destriction and explores themes surrounding language, dissolution, memory and the extinction of species. Vicuñas accolades are numerous; she won the prestigious Art Award, which is awarded by Spanish Ministry of Culture, fo her ‘outstanding work as a poet, visual artist and activist’ and her ‘multidimensional art that interacts with the earth, written language and weaving’. She was also recently awarded a Golden Lion Lifetime achievement award at the 2022 Venice Biennial. Her most recent exhibition was at the Brooklyn Museum and the MFS Boston in 2018 and her recently published works include ‘New and Selected Poem’ (2018) and ‘Amazone Pellagra Mas’ (2018). Her work is critically claimed due to its relevance  in regards to economic disparity. Her unwavering commitment to feminist forms and methodologies is a unifying theme across her diverse body of work - specifically encorperating eco-feminism into her practice.

Throughout the lecture i was fascinated by her work, but in particular her Quipu pieces. Quipu are South American communication devices that have been used by different cultures for thousands of years as a ways of communicating information through knots and different coloured strings. Vicuña hangs these pieces from the ceiling, with the composition reminisant of a forest. simply, her work is outstandind in the sense it adresses a deep rooted and age old cultural and traditionap form of communication. This weeks lecture was a documentry on Vicuna from YouTube but It would have been great to hear Vicuña actually speak to the class.
