big fakemon post??
when I was in high school, I wanted to make a fakemon region based on Canada. I still kinda do, but not nearly to the extent of interest I did then. Anyway, I have drawn and designed some fakemon that I am pretty proud of and thought it would be neat to share some of em
Tumblr media
Geodot, Ohkoden, Minerodon > this pseudo-legendary line is based on the idea of a dragon with a den and hoard of gold, except the dragon is both! It starts as a smol geode, similar in appearance to Roggenrola. > ohko stone (aka dragonstone) is a rock that has a unique texture from water erosion. Erosion and refinement plays a role in this Pokemon's evolution, as it reveals the treasure hiding within. > the wing talons (?) gave me some trouble. I knew I wanted rocky, cavernous wings, but they originally looked very disconnected. Then I figured that, instead of having the talons on some arms from the serpentine body, I'd put them on the ends of the wings, giving this dragon similar anatomy to that of a wyvern. That choice really made the wings look cohesive. > I was originally going to have it be different colours rather than just gold, one for each stat (based on what its nature boosts). The forms would be called Amethyst Form, Ruby Form, Gold Form, etc. The thing about this was that I thought gold was the most relevant, since it is a dragon and gold is the goal in alchemy and all that fun stuff.
Tumblr media
Migopu > Ice/Flying bc it lives in cold climates. > ptarmigan + lagopus makes its name. This is a mix of ptarmigans and the snowshoe hare, with ideas of snowshoes and skiing. The genus name Lagopus comes from hare+feet, based on how fluffy ptarmigans' feet are. That inspired me to give it the feet of a snowshoe hare, which are big enough to spread the hare's weight so that it does not sink in snow. > the colours are meant to reference rock ptarmigans, which have a bright bit of red on their faces in winter plumage. These Pokemon are excellent at walking on and sliding across the surface of deep snow.
Tumblr media
Arboreelis > an eel that flies in the night skies of the region! it is meant to look like the colours of an aurora. There are two theories to how these Pokemon work: either they are drawn to the electricity that creates auroras, or they use their electrical powers to form auroras. > name comes from aurora borealis and eel. Ice/Electric because auroras are electrical phenomena in polar locations
Tumblr media
Glubmerge, Glubmarine > fish + compass + sun dial + toy boat + submarine. kinda a random mix, but I think it's really cute. Water navigation fish! > Water type. glub + submerge, glub + submarine
Tumblr media
Inkuaill > ink + inkwell + quill + quail > quills come from birds. this bird evokes paper, ink drops, inkwells, and the inking pens > I know I know I KNOW I already have a game bird but. they're completely different concepts ok > Normal/Poison because ink?? and because while it can fly, game birds are more known for being on the ground and running.
Tumblr media
Frigeret, Boreabbit, Harfrost > HOARFROST! I mean mr rime has rime in its name which is the same thing just formed differently but,,, IDC we need some hoarfrost rep > what is winter throughout life? As a wee baby, it's a threat. The ears are meant to be like muffs or mittens, working to protect the blue-nosed baby. Frigeret (Normal) does not yet have mastery over ice. Even when awake, this little guy looks like it is permanently asleep, as if frozen. Frigid + leveret. (Note: hares are born with their eyes open. Frigeret can open its eyes tho?? idk i wanted it to look more frozen and cold, so the closed eyes thing is closer to rabbits here) > as a child, winter is the season of fun! Snowmen, snowballs, snowforts, sledding, skiing! When I was a kid, winter was my favourite season. The fun in this form is also based on Jack Frost, a sprite-like figure meant to explain the snow and cold in winter. This is what makes Boreabbit an Ice/Fairy type. Boreas + boreal + rabbit > getting older (even just as an adult), winter becomes more of an inconvenience. From driving to the cold to the later sun, the fondness of winter fades even before the aching bones from changing weather. Grouchy, Harfrost is meant to be closer to the idea of Old Man Winter. Still Ice/Fairy. hoarfrost + hare (ALSO the 'hoar' in hoarfrost means showing signs of aging!)
Tumblr media
Nimbark, Halestial, Cirruscruff > cloud dogs? CLOUD DOG EVOLUTION LINE > Nimbark (Normal) is a lil spaniel with the big ears! These ears are so fluffy, they evoke clouds! One must be very careful when grooming because the ears are delicate but tangle easily. > Halestial (Normal/Flying) is a papillon dog! The big rounding ears are colourful, based on sun halos, also called sun dogs! These are rainbow circles around the sun, indicating a very cold day. > Cirruscruff (Normal/Flying) is a Newfoundland dog! Super big fluffy boy. It's super reliable and loyal to its trainer. These clouds are darker bc every image I see of a Newfie has dark fur > these bred dogs also represent the two main colonizing forces in Canada! Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are British bred dogs, and Papillons are French bred dogs. Newfies are Canadian dog breeds. > the idea of a fluffy, loyal, guardian angel cloud dog is based on my own dog, Merlin. He is a Morkie Poo, which doesn't really relate to this, BUT he is whitish and fluffy and soft and makes me think of clouds and I love everything about him and if I have a guardian angel dog it's this boi

#72: Anglier- Evolves from Lanturn when exposed to a thunder stone. Anglier lives in the depths of the ocean, about 12,000 feet down or more. Some have even been recorded living in the deepest parts of the deepest trenches in the world. The bulbs on its head can glow so brightly that they can be seen from the surface, but Anglier can dim them at will. To take down their prey, Anglier shoots out thousands of volts of electricity that it can direct through the water to avoid outsider casualties. When in captivity, Anglier shows affection by zapping their trainers with very small amounts of electricity, just enough to tickle. Anglier never stops growing. The very oldest Anglier are over 500 years old and just under 100 feet long. (Name from “angler”, “anglerfish”, and “chandelier”)

The Whisker Serpent Monstar comes out, Whiskerpent!
Tumblr media
Description:
"Whiskerpent are an extremely old species of Monstars, having been around in this form for thousands of years. They are typically very calm and respectful of space when interacting with others despite their massive size. Because Whiskerpent continue to grow over the course of their long lives, they may even get as large as multi-story buildings if left alone long enough."
Whiskerpent has a simple name but a complicated inspiration. The name comes from WHISKER and SERPENT. The inspiration comes from three different directions:
the tentacled snake, an aquatic species of snake that has two small tentacles extending from their head that they use to sense prey;
Tumblr media
the Anguilidae family of freshwater eels;
Tumblr media
and the mythological Eastern dragons, which have long whiskers and serpent-like bodies.

We are pleased to welcome Toldentops as one of our page artists!
I am an artist specializing in character design and illustration! I’ve also been developing concepts for my own fakemon region.
You can find him on Twitter!
[ID: a graphic with a stained glass pattern in various shades of teal. At the top is the title box reading "Toldentops" in all caps. To the left of it is a magnifying glass with a picture of a one-eyed, blue-skinned alien grinning widely. Below that is a box containing the twitter handle "Toldentops". Under that reads underlined words “favorite tiny pokemon: Klink, Kartana, Cutiefly" The centermost box has a picture of a purple monster with coral growing from its body and eyes, reaching up out of frame. A large eel swims around it./END ID]

A while ago, I found an old sketch of a Fakemon I made, and I figured I'd try to redesign and reinterpret it to fit in with other monster-taming games! Some of the iterations have different names either to fit in with the game's naming scheme or because the design changed significantly. Redesigns and their respective games are listed below!
Tumblr media
Pokémon:
I'm mostly happy with how this came out. That said, I probably didn't need a second set of highlights for most of the drawing, and I'd like to find a brush that looks more pencil-like for the line art. When I originally drew this guy, I wanted to put a twist on the more typical mimic-mon design by having it striking from boxes and crates instead of the now-expected Pokéballs.
Tumblr media
Temtem:
This is probably one of the furthest abstractions from the original I've drawn so far. There don't seem to be any creatures in Temtem that are especially inorganic looking (even the Cyber types are cyborg-like), so I figured I'd model it after a garden eel since they basically behave like an organic jack-in-the-box.
Tumblr media
Nexomon:
This was the first time I decided to change the name. To fit in with Nexomon's type system, I based the design off of the French name for Jack-in-the-boxes, "Diable en Boîte" (Devil in a Box". By the time this design was finished, I figured it didn't fit the name Jabbox anymore, so I changed it to "Seeldevil" (from "Sealed Evil" and "Devil").
Tumblr media
Cassette Beasts:
This one was the most like the original in design and behavior. The real gimmick to this iteration is that it'd be the only naturally occurring Glitter type in the game, being partly based off of glitter bombs. I also wanted to change the fist-head to an abstracted peace sign to fit the game's overall vibe, and it calls back to the slapstick trope of poking someone's eyes out ala The Three Stooges. I may also make a sprite from this drawing complete with bootleg recolors!
Tumblr media
Siralim:
This was the first sprite-based design I made. I leaned a little into the monster-clown motif here so it could fit in with Siralim's more brutal takes on monsters. Moreover, this will likely be only one of two or three designs to not have a portmanteau as a name. In lore, these creatures would be crafted from the severed arm of a lesser demon and a few arcane machine components, now doomed to serving as both a babysitter and as a living toy. Variants of this design will have to come at a much later date cause making one pixel art hand was bad enough, making 5-6 extra would've broken me.
Tumblr media
Monster Crown:
Speaking of drawing more pixel art hands! I wanted to lean harder into the monster-clown flavor since the denizens of Monster Crown are much more violent in their behavior. Making this sprite was a fun challenge since I was limited to a 4-color palette, and I intend to make the five other variant forms at a later date to go along with the game's cross-breeding system.
Tumblr media
Coromon:
This is the last design I've made for now. I was initially intimidated by the prospect of imitating Coromon's art style as it's not only detailed but also smoothly animated. After axing the idea of replicating the animation style, I felt more comfortable working on this sprite. The overall design is derived from a theory that the original jack-in-the-box was based on a folktale about a demon getting sealed in a boot. I also threw in a few Muppet-esque elements so it'd better fit its Normal typing. The head is shaped like a "Devil Horns" sign, with the actual horns serving as the fingers and the single paw in place of the thumb. Making the Potent and Perfect recolors should be a much easier process and will likely be the soonest of the variant sets to come out.
Other planned designs:
Digimon, Dragon Quest Monsters, Ni No Kuni, Yo-Kai Watch
Lemme know if there are any other monster tamers/creature collectors with unique styles I should tackle!

OK OK, question, you know the fakemon designs you did? they are wonderful, but i was wondering what kind of shape oarmen's body is, do they have an eel kind of body or is it like a long tube?
I'd say it's more eel-like! It's pretty narrow and gets narrower as it goes further down its body.

Fey's Pokémon RueViews: Gen IX 'Dex
Welp, release day has finally arrived and we (unfortunately) weren't treated to any well-publicized, comprehensive leaks, so I've only just now managed to go through Serebii's list of the new Pokémon. As I feared, I think we've finally reached a generation of Pokémon that I'm willing to skip -- unless, of course, new Pokémon get released down the way that change my mind. Usually, I can put together something approximating a team each generation fairly easily, but Gen VIII sorely tested that and Gen IX hasn't succeeded at all.
I'ma focus on the few Pokémon I (kinda) like; me being me, that will be negative enough. Please note that this list is, at the moment, exhaustive.
(Dis)Honorable Mention: Sprigatito Line
It's been a while since I've had a full starter evolutionary line I've liked; much of that boils down to Game Freak's insistence on making all of the starters furries (scalies, featheries, etc.). I get that some people like that aesthetic; I do not. I find it lazy and stupid. This generation, it seems like the furries are more like Looney Tunes (a la Scorbunny), which is better, but still not my cuppa. The Sprigatito line looks like it's trying to be dashing, which works, so I'll give it a "yeah, maybe you."
Finizen
I started following a Fakemon blog on here and went through a few Fakemon-devoted deviantArt accounts last month; in at least one of those, I saw something almost identical to this. (Indeed, I think it's in my queue somewhere.) But that's because Finizen is an extraordinarily generic cartoon dolphin; I wasn't impressed by the Fakemon and I'm not impressed by this, but at least we have a true dolphin. (I've been pretending that Lanturn, one of my favorites, is a dolphin; I'm glad it got changed from the fugly footballfish/anglerfish/electric eel that it was.) Unfortunately, its evolved form is stupid: the same thing with a spot on its breast or (with a form change) a muscular dolphin standing on its tail flukes. I've seen far more interesting dolphin Fakemon, not to mention dolphin pets/monsters in other franchises. Disappointing, but not horrible. C
Grafaiai
This is probably the best of the lot. Aye-ayes are cool and, dumb name aside (seriously, GF localization needs to work on its portmanteaux), the gimmick works. It's like somebody put thought into the Smeargle Pokédex entries (Smeargle is also supposed to mark all over its territory; at least Grafaiai does so for defensive reasons). I do not care for its pre-evolution and am kinda sad that it's not the base form; if it were, it would be hands down my favorite unevolved simian. B+
Gimmighoul
I love Mimics, so it would be out of character for me to dislike this. That said, it's not quite a Mimic; Voltorb is a Mimic (a monster resembling an item of some sort that then attacks you). There are more interesting clam-chest monsters elsewhere that get the idea better. This is just a little minion thing (that's barely a Pokémon) that likes treasure chests (which heretofore weren't a thing in the games, to my knowledge). Its evolved form vaguely resembles Kokopelli for no reason. Eh. C+
Chien-Pao
If we're in Spain, why do so many of the Legendary Pokémon have Chinese-looking names? (Similarly, why was New York City themed around Medieval feudalism and Taoism?) This snow leopard-weasel is cute, though I think that's because it's a snow leopard and a weasel and not because of its specific design motifs (the frozen braids on its mouth look...odd). B
Chi-Yu
They're trying again with goldfish in a way that is at least creative, so I have to give props. I don't actually care for it, but in terms of critiquing designs I like what they did and how they did it. B
Iron Thorns
I don't get why they're going with non-Pokémon naming conventions for a lot of the older gen reduxes, but whatever. I think this looks better than regular Tyranitar, but we already had a MechaGodzilla last generation, so I'm not sure exactly how I stand on it. Like, the fact that regular Tyranitar has weird holes in it always bugged me, so having it have light panels seems quite a bit better, but making it Rock/Electric when it now looks too much like a robot (Steel/Electric) is a problem in itself and then you have the redundancy.

Fakemon from ages ago using a random animal generator and random type generator then drawing what I vibed with. I don't think I'll ever do these digitally but you guys can enjoy the sketches and like if you see any of these designs and vibe with them and the typing or think hey I could do that better with x typing instead go ahead fam I hope it inspires you! (and drop me an @ as I'd love to see it if my sketches inspired art). Under a readmore so you can skip this post easily if you're not interested.
Up first was me just trying to do a fun bug type starting grub pokemon him face. With two potential evos a moth esq evo based off my mum calling moths "Teddy bear butterfly's" hence the teddy bear like appearance. I figured they evolve from max friendship they absolutely adore you. Alternatively the grub can become an unspecified beetle at lowest/no friendship that absolutely fucking hates you because we love the duality. Both evos having antenna bits and spots.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next Penguin I forget which kind specifically but for the prompt I got dragon poison so I figured dragon type penguin chick hence a horn and spikes and little claws that gains poison type upon evolution as it became an adult and swam in polluted oil slick waters gaining a poison oil black coat.
Tumblr media
I believe this animal was called a banjo? As I was absolutely perplexed at the suggestion as I knew banjo was an instrument but not of the animal and typing was Psychic. I don't think I can do any better than the baby banjo I turned the patterns it naturally had into stars due to their association with the psychic typing simple enough really. I don't so much like the evolution as I wasn't sure how to in a sense evolve the concept and design that's just a bigger banjo. I did imagine it's horns could channel psychic energy and it could foresee future events making it more skittish and paranoid compared to its prevo hence rearing up, making them more likely to lash out as I imagine having future vision and knowing something bad COULD happen would cause a lot of paranoia but other than that I wasn't sure what to do or add. Perhaps had I added another typing I could've come up with more.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The animal prompt was Moray eel and the typing was flying type, so I turned their top fins into side fins that they use to glide and fly through the sky like gliding snakes. I imagine in the pokemon world they behave a lot more like kites, appearing on windy days to play around with the children. They're just silly lil guys.
Tumblr media
Moon jellyfish and I think the prompt was ice psychic but obviously psychic is a lot more obvious, I think I intended to have this be the first stage then make a bigger more aggressive ice psychic evolution but drawing a jellyfish pokemon I found was quite difficult and I think I channeled too much Jellymon into this design. Overall though she's a cute little psychic jellyfish.
Tumblr media
Lastly this design was actually based off of an ai generated image and then I tried to evolve that. The wings were added last minute and kind of suck! I'll admit that I think I should've had potential wings/limbs where a presumed shoulder would be so when they evolve they gained wyvern like wings or perhaps even some kind of arm like a scyther. The ai generated image was bug I'm pretty sure while I made the evolution bug dragon, the evolution line is a lot like nymph bugs that are just mini adults. Could've been better again but I wasn't clever enough to use the potential. Unfortunately I don't have the original ai image anymore for reference but I think it was green in color.
