FULL NAME: Emma of the White Kingdom. (Known also as Swan Princess, Swan, Emma, Em) AGE: younger than 28 by default if she's not gone 'dark' GENDER: cis female ROMANTIC AND SEXUAL ORIENTATION: straight LANGUAGES: most of those spoken in the nearby kingdoms and realms, some ancient ones as well. But not fluent. MENTAL ILLNESSES: depression when younger (until she turns 28 and we go to the next phase of her life, in which she has that and PTSD, panic attacks, and anger issues).

SHORT VERSION OF HER BACKSTORY

For people who won't read a longer one, but there is more to read after the long version, and keep in mind that this is just a summary: super happy princess and knight of the White Kingdom, can be found everywhere doing pretty much anything whether appropriate or not, hopeful, stubborn, chatty, blunt, overprotective, good listener but can be petty, loves dances and ballgowns as much as armors and swords. Peak Chaotic Dumbass always ready to go get in trouble. Very affectionate. She will be very appreciative of everyone until proven wrong. Sometimes she sees the world in many shades of grey, other times it's black and white and she will kill if she believes it necessary. Always working when home and bad at letting people help her, when outside she's a loud and enthusiastic (and not so graceful) knight who may not make the best decisions. Traumatized in her love life (toxic manipulative boyfriend Arian who was with her to prove he could tame her and broke her heart), she lost hope about finding her own love and plans an arranged marriage for herself, believing most of her life will stop once she's married and that she'll spend the rest of her life in the castle, but trying to make the best of it for her people. An adventurer. She convinced she's too weak to handle true pain because of the 'melancholy' that hit her after Arian but the depression actually came from her heart remembering she was meant to be pregnant in her original (canon) timeline.

Will really appreciate good looking men as well and flirt, doesn't mean she expects anything to happen, but she does have one night stands and keeps in touch in a friendly way sometimes, just runs away from love.

The future she was meant to have (the canon tvshow) was changed and never happened because of canon Rumplestiltskin not drinking a potion to forget what he learned about the future so he could change it, but she feels the absence of a son without knowing she was meant to have him and has no idea she has magic; the fairies, trying to help her, gave her teas that are memory potions to suppress all that pain and memories and to avoid the rise of another evil queen.

When she'll turn 28, the time when she was meant to be the Savior, she'll remember and her mind will shatter due to potions and too many fake memories in her alternate realities. She'll be also captured by clerics and tortured to try to get rid of her powers. Her mind will be filled with dark magic in an attempt to keep her memories together, and her own white magic can hurt it, there are different lives constantly fighting in her head and more than that the agony of having lost Henry, her son, and that entire destiny, making her turn against everyone who had a part in it - and pretend to not love anyone else anymore so that the people she cares for won't be used against her.

LONG BACKSTORY

AU Where the curse didn’t happen because canon Rumplestiltskin didn’t drink the potion to forget what Emma Swan told him about Neal dying, and changed his future. He created a parallel universe where Regina was defeated and cast away (with his help, because he found out Belle was alive and trapped by the queen, and he wanted revenge).

In the Enchanted Forest, Emma grew up with her parents, and with Pinocchio and Alexandra at her side, a happy, adventurous child; around age fifteen, when so often spending time in town, she was courted by the son of the baker, Arian, who had a bet going with his friends: he'd be able to tame the wild princess. After a year of being together, the guilt of having made the princess, who had turned out to be so nice (and that he had manipulated into becoming as ladylike and gentle as he wanted), fall in love with him pushed him to confess the truth.

Emma's heart was broken: she lied to everyone about the reason of the breakup, told everyone he had realized he didn't love her and that was all, and spent days feeling humiliated, betrayed and hurt, until one day she met Grace, the Hatter's daughter, and ran away with her to go on an adventure and forget. She came back days later, knowing her parents and friends must be dying of worry, and tried to make up for it, to act normal, but she wasn't so successful. Months later she started feeling even more miserable right when she should have been pregnant in a world without magic. She couldn't remember a life that she didn't live but her heart was hurting, not forgetting a child that should have been there, a consequence of changing the future.

She began to feel a new odd emptiness that she couldn’t explain, knowing there was something or someone that she missed, until one day when Henry was supposed to be born she felt the very real physical pain from it and thought she might be dying or going insane; that was the last push for her to ask the Blue Fairy for help and start fighting again, wanting to be happy again both for herself and her loved ones, receiving a magical tea that was meant tot help and that suppressed her memories. She stopped believing she'd find love, but found joy in helping others, in adventures, in mixing her passion for duels and her silliness to the love for dances and clothes and food.

Blue knew part of what she had lost, and could feel that in the future they were all at risk of getting a new, terrible villain, so she was trying to save Emma and the kingdom.

Sadly, her attempts were not meant to work.

Emma didn't tell anyone else about her pains and nightmares (except for Grace who found out on her own) and is still traveling, enjoying her freedom and sure that her life the way she likes it will end once she'll have to take the crown and be trapped in her castle; she also wants to prove herself as a hero, a warrior like her parents, which is why it's easy to find her fighting beasts or exploring dangerous places, but also befriending everyone she meets and trying to help them, as 'tactful' and hopeful as her father and as trusting and impulsive as her mother. She loves fun, visits so often Hansel and Gretel's tavern that her townpeople just expect her there at this point, gets in danger whenever she can take a break from her duties, still chased by the rebels who don't want her parents to rule or are on the side of the Evil Queen, and of course the men under old King George's control, who never accepted the loss of his real son.

On her twenty-eight birthday in this world she will remember everything, and between the knowledge of the life she was meant to have, the loss of a true love who was never born, the teas given her to suppress memories, and her own magic, and torture from clerics to get rid of her witch said, Emma will break and temporarily retreat to find a way to control her magic, to make sure her memories won't go away again, and to plan revenge on anyone responsible for it. She'll pretend to be fully evil and not care about anyone anymore after her change so that they won't be targeted by the enemies she's making (Rumplestiltskin, the fairies, even Cora), which is easier to do when looking at her family makes her only remember the things she's lost, and feel the guilt because she was beloved and now she can't be with them anymore.

Cold skin, dark magic trying to keep her mind together and making it painful to use white magic, she'll be hiding in the summer palace and planning revenge, but the role of villain will never suit her too well. (She doesn't know, but Henry's spirit lives in Neverland and can be brought back.)

Note: she does plan to take the dark curse from Rumplestiltskin if possible and finally die and reunite with Henry, taking it with Henry. Suicidal ideation is therefore present, as well as depression and PTSD from torture and more. I can get around it if needed because it's a trigger to you, although when it comes to wanting to die it's not exactly a constant theme (Emma fighting depression and mood swings is, however.) You can find a few more details here.

A HEADS UP ABOUT THE CHARACTER

While she does work hard so that one day she’ll be able to reign and make her people happy (which involves knowing laws and working with them to better people’s lives, take care of the kingdom’s resources, taxes and so on) she’s not the best diplomat yet, and her recklessness and bluntness, even if she tries to ‘fix it’, plus her inappropriate behaviors, have created friction between her and many other royals from other kingdoms.

There has been one occasion in which she went to fight a dragon without proper armor because she forgot it, too in a rush to get back to a town where some delicious pies were on sale. She almost died, predictably, and to this day Pinocchio and Grace will bring up this story to try to slow down whatever new quest she has in mind. Everything can be made into a quest.

Animals come to her when she sings (especially those from the Enchanted Forest).

She can tell when people are lying, though not always, depending on how emotional she is.

She has a black horse that she called Apple - because at first he was insufferable and nobody could stand his temper. Now he is still insufferable and scary, but at least not to her. He's a giant horse and had potentially some magical ancestor but it's hard to tell.

Enchanted Forest verses

princess v. stealing beans: verse where she either willingly crossed a portal open by a bean or feel through one and ended up in another world - for crossovers in which she's still princess Emma.

v. royal cinnamon: anything set from her birth until Arian breaks up with her a few months after turning sixteen. Emma is more inexperienced, hasn’t traveled much yet, though she does train to be a knight. At fifteen, after the courting started, she dropped some of her tomboy attitude to be more ladylike, the way Arian was manipulating her to be, and she found out that she liked that too. Balls, ballgowns, tea parties and everything that she had rejected as a child.

v. melancholy: set after the break up and finding out it was all for a bet Arian made with friends (being able to tame the wild princess). In the following months she had to recover from heartbreak; she met Grace the day after the breakup and joined her on an adventure, running away for a few days but regretting it because of the pain caused to her family. She did like the taste of adventure and promised herself to travel more. However that’s when the ‘no Henry’ sickness started, hitting her body and mind and leaving her hopeless and barely able to interact with friends for a year until she slowly began to heal because of Blue’s teas. She believes the 'melancholy' was due to the break up and that she's too weak to handle love, and that the pains that sometimes she still feels are due to stress.

v. born to be wild: anything set after she starts travelling and seeing the world, around eighteen, and before her twenty-eight birthday. Emma is balancing duties of a princess who one day wants to rule and pleasures of a knight who enjoys life fully. She also counts down to the day when she knows she’ll have to force herself to marry someone for the good of the kingdom.

potential verse that doesn’t happen in every timeline - v. white witch: Emma learns she has magic and runs away from the castle, knowing her people will reject another ‘witch’ in charge, hiding and trying to use her magic to save people without getting too exposed.

v. dark witch: anything set after her 28 birthday when she remembers everything and her brain shatters. Memories come and go constantly, her magic is out of control, she wants revenge and Henry back. She’s captured by clerics once, tortured, and after freeing herself she retires to the Summer Palace, with some loyal servants choosing to join her. She acts heartlessly with her old friends and people in general to avoid weakness (though she’s not great at keeping the act when people are in danger) and plots the fairies’ destruction and Rumplestiltskin’s ruin using memories from lives she hasn’t lived. She will join anyone who can get her what she wants. She also used dark magic to stitch her mind back together, reason why when she uses white magic she hurts herself tremendously.

also potential verse - v. dark one: set after she takes the dagger and becomes Dark One in one way or another (Rumple might or might not be still alive and suffering if she found a way to transfer the darkness to herself). The fairies might or might not have been defeated. She’s more in control of her powers and memories.

v. hope: set after she finds out Henry can be brought back (through Neverland, or the other Authors) and starts travelling to find what she needs for that to happen. She doesn’t publicize her identity to avoid trouble, but also because any enemy who finds out she still cares about something might use it against her.

v. mother and believer: set after Henry is born/brought back to her and Emma has retired, hiding from enemies and raising her son or, in verses where she got Henry back without going through a dark witch stage, is simply keeping him with her at the castle.

v. the Mad Hag: Emma was taken away and locked into a tower by Rumplestiltskin (or someone else, it can be plotted) before her 28th birthday so that she wouldn't be a danger once remembering her other life, her magic also suppressed. When her memories did come back, free to wreck havoc in her mind, Emma remembered the life she was meant to live as Emma Swan, and the cursed life Regina gave her so she could leave with Henry before Pan's curse hit, and her own Enchanted Forest life, and with no magic to help, the pain took over her mind, leaving her in a constant state of confusion, lives and memories overlapping and every now and then allowing her to remember other people the way they were in other lives. Once freed, of course her mind will slowly clear up again, as well as her magic which would be out of control. She's scared and lost, and will have to put back the pieces of the puzzle to understand what happened.

v. mermaid curse: Emma is accidentally cursed to be a mermaid every day and turn back into a woman every night until receiving a kiss of (romantic) true love. She has resigned herself to live this way, trying not to swim too far when a mermaid or she'll drown at sunset, and not to deep into the forest or she'll end up trapped on the ground by her own tail. If she didn't believe in finding love as a woman, how can she now? Open of course to all sorts of relationships, not just romantic threads.

v. twelve hours curse: same concept as the mermaid curse, but in this case she can turn into different species: dragon, dog, swan.

Tumblr Ads Decoded

I had a good Christmas but now that the festivities have died down I felt like effing around and going down some more ad-related rabbit holes. I usually focus on mobile game ads but while I’m working on my mobile game review backlog I have some explanations of other bizarre Tumblr ads I’ve come across in my travels. Enjoy:

Note: These are all ads I saw in screenshots from other users so I haven’t clicked on any of these ads myself and can only go from what’s included in the screenshots. I can’t guarantee where these ads actually lead if you click on them.

This ad apparently comes from SoGoodly, a website that compiles various viral stories, clickbait and listicles including “life hacks.” There doesn’t actually seem to be any tips specifically about putting vinegar-soaked bread in the garbage on their website.

However, the image from the ad comes from a video by Household Hacker on YouTube called “10 Awesome Vinegar Life Hacks you should know,” which explains that leaving vinegar-soaked bread in your garbage can overnight can eliminate lingering odors (don’t know if that’s true or not but that’s what Household Hacker said in their video, which was posted in 2013, and has nearly 24 million views).

Apparently another site called Gloriousa, similar to SoGoodly in its clickbaity-ness, has also been promoting a similar ad that advises leaving a vinegar-soaked piece of bread in the garage, which links to a 92-page list of “life hacks” that doesn’t even include this particular tip, according to Snopes.

Conclusion: This is clickbait, likely with the goal of generating ad revenue.

What does it mean?: Leaving vinegar-soaked bread in your garbage can overnight can allegedly eliminate lingering odors.

Another one from SoGoodly. Photo comes from a Good Housekeeping article from 2014 titled “16 Smart Ways to Use Rubber Bands” and says putting a rubber band around the doorknob makes it easier to open doors in specific situations such as when unloading groceries or trying to open doors at night without waking up anyone in your household. Not sure if this tip actually appears on SoGoodly’s website because it doesn’t feel worth it to click through several ad-filled pages just to find out, but a few long listicles came up when I searched “rubber band.”

Conclusion: This is clickbait, likely with the goal of generating ad revenue.

What does it mean?: Putting a rubber band around a doorknob like this apparently makes it easier to open the door hands-free and quietly.

SoGoodly strikes again. The source of this photograph is the July 2012 issue of the TOILETPAPER art photography magazine - you can actually buy a reproduction of this bitten soap from them too (WARNING: bright colors and flashing/moving images on their website) link to magazine issue/link to soap merch

Again, not going to struggle through thousands of pages of ads to find this so-called “life hack” on SoGoodly but according to another health-themed listicle/”life hack” website called The Healthy, sleeping with soap can provide magnesium which relieves leg cramping/restless legs at night. Apparently Dr. Oz also said sleeping with lavender soap can help you relax at night, according to The Healthy. Don’t know if any of that is true but that’s what the “life hack” claim is.

Conclusion: This is clickbait, likely with the goal of generating ad revenue.

What does it mean?: Sleeping with a bar of soap in bed can allegedly relieve nocturnal leg cramps and help you feel more relaxed, presumably through some sort of aromatherapy effect.

This ad apparently comes from Game of Glam, another very clickbaity website mostly focused on celebrity news, which hasn’t been updated since September. Couldn’t find this article on their site but there’s an article called “Celebrities Who Died and You Didn’t Even Notice” on a website called BeliefNet, which appears to have religious themes and mostly posts listicles. However, there aren’t 22 celebrities on that list and the man in the photo is not one of the celebrities mentioned. Also, the man in the photo isn’t dead.

The man shown here is actor Shemar Moore (left), best known for playing Derek Morgan on “Criminal Minds” and Malcolm Winters on “The Young and the Restless” from 1994 to 2005 (before Darius McCrary took over the role). He is still alive.

I had never seen either show so I did a reverse image search and initially thought the man was Kristoff St. John, who played Moore’s on-screen brother Neil Winters, due to the fact that this photo was on a Pinterest board titled “Young & Restless - Winters Family” and St. John did in fact die in 2019. However, I later realized that it is actually the woman in the photo, actress Michelle Thomas, who sadly died from a rare form of cancer in 1998 at age 30. Michelle Thomas played Callie Rogers, Malcolm Winters’ ex-fiancée, until her death, when the role was recast with Siena Goines. Thomas is better known for her roles as Justine Phillips on “The Cosby Show” and Myra Monkhouse on “Family Matters.”

Conclusion: This is clickbait, likely with the goal of generating ad revenue.

What does it mean?: The man in the photo is actor Shemar Moore, who is still alive, but the woman in the photo, actress Michelle Thomas, died in 1998. The use of he/him pronouns in the ad is deceptive.

I’m sorry but I searched and searched and searched for meaning in this one and came up with nothing, absolutely zilch, no clues, no leads except one person who said the link led to the Chinese search engine Baidu. I was able to find the source of the image - it’s a Backyard Discovery Timber Cove Swing Set, which you can buy for $1,798 at Sam’s Club. I also found an uncropped version of the photo, but that’s all. This one is truly a mystery.

Conclusion: Some mysteries are better left unsolved.

What does it mean?: Only God Himself will ever know.

IMAGES: Boeing KC-46A refuels first international aircraft

A U.S. Air Force Boeing KC-46A Pegasus aircraft refueled Spanish EF-18 Hornets fighters, known in Spain as C-15s, on April 18, during its first Employment Concept Exercise (ECE 22-03), at Morón Air Base.

The mission marked the first international receiver for the KC-46A, paving the way for stronger interoperability with allies and partners.

According to Brigadier General Ryan Samuelson, leader of the KC-46A all-in-one team of the Air Mobility Command (AMC), the provisional capacity release plan, of which the ECE is a part, has significantly improved the operations of the KC-46A in the last 10 months.

“The Pegasus is now released to support almost 85% of the joint force's receivers requesting air refueling from the U.S. Transportation Command,” Samuelson said. “While the ICR brought the mission features of the KC-46, the ECE will now operationalize these features in various mission scenarios.”

The AMC introduced the second phase of the ICR on March 10, when Minihan approved the employment of four KC-46As and approximately 220 active aviators, Guard and Reserve for Moron Air Base to conduct the first of a series of ECEs designed to improve the operational field and support of the KC-46A.

Throughout ECE 22-03, aircraft and personnel remained under the AMC authorities while validating the desired learning objectives and preparing to support the theater's operational missions as needed. The KC-46A ICR plan allows Pegasus to perform operational tasks that would otherwise be fulfilled by the KC-135 Stratotanker and KC-10 Extender, increasing the air refueling capacity of the force and further tempering Pegasus' full force crews with operational missions.

Pegasus has discharged more than 78 million pounds of fuel and completed more than 34,900 probe contacts and 2,200 with the hose since January 2019.

On April 26, the Air Force had 57 KC-46As in its inventory. KC-46A currently operates at McConnell Air Base, Kansas; Seymour Johnson Air Base, North Carolina; Pease Air National Guard Base, New Hampshire; McGuire Dix Lakehurst Joint Base, New Jersey; and Altus Air Base, Oklahoma.

Week 5: Political Engagement

This week I’m digging into politic engagement topic. It’s a bit hard for me because I don’t engage in politic related stuff a lot and I’m not interested about it. Well let’s get started anyway.

Political Engagement

Why are some people highly engaged by political communication, while others are not? Why do some people believe spurious claims of political actors while others approach them all with cynicism? What are the pathways that lead from communication to participation, and how do we understand patterns of participatory behavior. It is this complex but important area of research that this project tackles.

According to Afromeeva, Liefbroer and Lilleker (2020), political engagement is defined here as a cognitive process. When the brain becomes stimulated by external stimuli, in this case relating to politics, elaboration occurs. Elaboration here means the connecting of thoughts, recognizing the new information as important and relevant, a process that leads to having an attitudinal reaction. Political engagement is a necessary precursor for political participation and thus important for a vibrant civic culture.

An engaged citizenry is often considered a sign of a healthy democracy (Wike & Castillo 2018). High levels of political and civic participation increase the likelihood that the voices of ordinary citizens will be heard in important debates, and they confer a degree of legitimacy on democratic institutions. However, in many nations around the world, much of the public is disengaged from politics.

Social Media and Politic Engagement

More than a decade ago, information and communication technologies dramatically changed the world (Ahmad, Alvi & Ittefaq 2019). For instance, new media and technology have changed the interpersonal interaction, communication patterns, and social and political discussions. Media and communication scholars, political scientists, sociologists, and international relations scholars have conducted hundreds of studies on various aspects of social media usage (Golan, Arceneaux, & Soule, 2019). The Internet is playing a significant role in providing information to the public on political events, engaging its users and encouraging them to get involved in offline political activities. The Internet has become vital for political discussions and political participation.

Millennials are the most active users of the Internet and social media (Ahmad, Alvi & Ittefaq 2019) . Online activities related to politics are useful and encourage youth to participate in political events. Internet use, political knowledge, and political participation are associated with one another. Organizations such as political parties are trying to keep up with this changing environment (Effing, Hillegersberg & Huibers 2011).

The early politician who successfully used social media for political engagement is Barack Obama.

Barack Obama

Four years after Facebook launched in 2008, we saw the first big step in using the internet to run a political campaign (Contentgroup 2020). As Barack Obama worked his way across the United States throughout 2007 and into 2008 to promote his candidacy, he had a little trick up his sleeve – Facebook. Using social media expanded his reach increasing voters, as well as strengthening his pre-existing audience.

In 2011 for the first time in political history, a presidential re-election bid was announced via a YouTube video. He also threw in his own hashtag, #Obama2012 – clearly he was a social media natural through and through.

He uses social media throughout his campaign grew drastically and changes in the way people used these platforms gave Obama a new podium to speak from, with more people listening. With the world’s attention, Obama began to also interact with the public via social media; he conducted several Q&As on Twitter and even used the more obscure discussion website, Reddit, for an ‘Ask Me Anything’. In a clever move, Obama now had a pool of engaged individuals on his side of the election trail.

Involvement through Empowerment. This was the mission of the Barack Obama campaign (The Dragonfly Effect n.d.). The first political campaign in history to truly harness the power of social media to spread the word, garner support and get people engaged. “No other candidate has ever integrated the full picture the way [Obama] has, that’s what’s really new about his campaign,” said Michael Malbin, executive director of the Campaign Finance Institute.

#BlackLivesMatter

Another political engagement that recently arises significantly this year is The Black Lives Matter.

The Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement began online when the co-founder Alicia Garzia shared the hashtag ‘#BlackLivesMatter’ following the murder of a young black boy named Trayvon Martin in 2013 (Gawthrop & Illingworth 2020). By taking its initial stance on social media, the BLM movement has relied on the social capital of platforms, such as Twitter and Facebook, in order to spread its message. Today, the BLM movement, following the tragic murder of George Floyd, is now a global human rights movement, with protests taking place daily in all 50 states of America, as well as in over 20 countries worldwide.

Countless eyewitness accounts of police brutality and racism have surfaced on social media in the form of videos and images that have been captured on mobile phones. Footage of George Floyd’s murder was captured by a bystander and went viral on Facebook. While it might be tempting to say this was a good thing, as it raised awareness and caught the attention of people who until now believed that racism was a thing of the past, it is not that simple. It is somewhat interesting but mainly upsetting to imagine what would have happened to the memory of George Floyd if we did not have social media. The story might have been picked up by a few local news outlets, but it is quite likely that interest would have faded quickly, and George Floyd would have probably become just another in a long list of forgotten black people in America killed unjustly at the hands of the police.

In conclusion,

So yeah, social media is becoming important tool for political participation and engagement. Interaction in social media has a strong influence on the propensity to participate in politics. The Internet and social media provide an opportunity to the young population for political discussion through various online groups, pages, and accounts. However, there’s still a lot of dark side with using the social media for political engagement, I won’t be discussing about it here. If interested, search for other’s blog from our classmate! The familiar streets and locations of the city and bringing back the days of yore the days spent during the schooling at Sherwood, and at the Delhi University .. the buildings and special structures and the relationships with them .. the fun , the midnight runs , the delicacies of the certain .. and all else .. so nostalgic and warm and still relevant ..

Nostalgia should be given a more acceptable expression .. its origin much like most other vocabulary came from either Greek or Latin or at times German .. why one cannot say .. but ..

coming from modern Latin which is a translation of the German Heimweh meaning ‘homesickness’, from the Greek nostos or return home adding to that algos , meaning pain .. the homesickness pain , gives credence to the entire exercise of nostalgia and its origin form ..

Its .. 6 am on the 6th April and last night a portion of the missive was constructed but, the nostalgic vein took over in many respects .. err .. of remembering the times of the times .. and driving past the memories as one drove to work, was overwhelming and so decided to give it due respect and slumber ..

but the slumber was in disturbance .. their was the ‘cat’ and mouse race to get to the ‘chocolate’ .. to devour it .. in time , even though the delicacy has been left, but certain impressions need to be executed and soon .. else the depression of a failed opportunity of travel dribbles past the cerebrum and though distances are great, the proximity of the connect of modern times is of immense value .. if brought to use in condition .. so though the connect was available and the temptation immense, the ‘hand’ was sufficient to ‘handle’ it .. just leaned across the bedside , searched, found the relevant, and .. exhilaration !!!

the famous and most visited and loved Bengali Market .. the chaat, the sweetmeats , the atmosphere all still there , a bit modernised and restructured, but the same .. the owners remembering the ol’ days and showing me an autograph signed for them during a visit in ‘74 .. that is 1974 ..

I signed on the opposite page .. April 5, 2022 ..

Ahh .. how memories are maintained and recorded for posterity .. the grandsons now in charge and the proud Father of the store looking on with pride .. and the crowds outside , limited to a few, an indicator of the popularity graph, stands about with not so much the intent of a shout and scream .. it has developed an alternative - the MOBILE camera .. now close to 7 billion of them around the world and a billion plus in India , Hindustan ...

I am ready for work , which takes place next door literally .. voice recordings for an Ad., and then later in the evening another location of so many stories and remembrances .. cannot give detail .. not permitted, due security .. but there ..

it’s almost the end of october, which means one of the greatest, most terrifying exploits known to writers is upon us: NaNoWriMo.

there are plenty of super good survival posts out there, but as this’ll be my seventh time participating (six wins, hoping for a seventh), i thought i’d drop my own set of tips into the mix. i’m going to focus mostly on the practical details of how to write; if you want tips on the writing itself either search the writing/reference tags or pester me to do another one later :P with that said, ~on with the post~

Step One: Figure Out Your Goal

i know, i know, obviously it’s to write 50k, but what does that mean to you? are you expecting

polished prose, ready to send off to a publisher?

being able to write every day?

just throwing up a bunch of ideas?

a mix of everything?

all of these are valid, but they’re going to require different approaches. if you want jaw-dropping writing, you’re going to need in the ballpark of five or more hours each day, if not more. if you want consistency, you’ll want to look at your normal schedule and set up a couple times you know you can write at. if just you want words, pretty much all you need to make sure is that you squeeze writing time in whenever.

your goal will probably change as the month progresses, and that’s totally fine. just check in every so often to remember a)what you’re working for and b)if it’s actually plausible. speaking of...

Step Two: Realize Your Limitations

1. Typing.

imma get super practical here: your typing speed dictates how fast you can get done. if you write 40wpm (the average), you cannot write the full 1667 in a half hour any more than you can run a mile in under three minutes. it’s honestly not a bad idea to check out your own speed, if only to help you understand yourself better. in my experience, actual writing then works like this (using my max speed, 89, as an example):

Absolute Max: 89 wpm (baseline)

Warring: 70 (75% of baseline)

In the zone: 45 (50% of baseline)

Taking my time, concentrated: 22 (25% of baseline)

anything lower than your max/4 probably means you’re spending a lot of time either researching or staring at the page, so just be aware of that.

2. Time & Focus

this kinda goes without saying, but best case scenario this is at least 1-2 hours of your life a day, or dedicating full Saturday/Sundays if you’re a weekend warrior kind of person. it’s so, so worth it if you can make time for it, but also don’t feel bad if you can’t! doing a half nano (25k) or whatever you want is also a fully acceptable plan.

that said, if you do have time, figure out your focus too. if you’ve never been the kind of person that can type for six hours straight, you will probably not magically become this person when it hits Nov. 1 (though with practice, you might be by Nov. 30). i like trying to write at least 300 before work and another 300 during lunch. that way there’s only 1k left for the evening, and having words on the page just makes me feel better. experiment with different ways of blocking out your time in the first few days and see what works best for you.

3. Don’t Forget You Live in a Body

writing is hard work, you will need to eat brain food! hunching over wrecks your back, stand up and stretch every so often! you will hate existing if you forgo sleep for days! and for the love of charles dickens, patron saint of getting paid by the word, take care of your mother-effing wrists!!

seriously on that last one. i’ve ignored it in the past and thoroughly screwed up my wrists one year; don’t be me. keep in them in a neutral position, do regular stretches, and if you need to, get wrist wraps (i recommend these).

Step Three: Actually Doing the Thing

the previous steps have had pretty broad advice, but now it’s time to get down to the nitty-gritty. these are mostly things i know work for me, and therefore may not for you—adjust to your own needs!

1. Write for 15 Minutes Every Day, Non-Negotiable.

i don’t even mean this is a “write 15 min and then your brain will be tricked into writing more” kinda way, but like, literally. you’re probably not going to be able to do 1667 every day—sometimes you’ll be tired and just won’t have the time. you’re very likely, however, to have 15 minutes, and you’ll want to use them. Doesn’t matter if you write 50 words or 500 in that time, at least you’ll have done something, and that’s usually enough to keep you from feeling like just giving up the next day.

2. You Might Need Physical Spaces

i’m a pretty sensory person when it comes to writing, and having a dedicated writing space is so helpful for me. going back to the idea of being an embodied person, it’s a lot easier to get your brain into a writing mode if your body’s already there. some good options include:

coffee shops (cozy! food!)

a specific room in your home (easily accessed! do what you want!)

libraries (free! quiet!)

a friend’s house (writing buddy! easy access to sounding board!)

all of these places usually have access to wifi, which is a positive.

3. You Definitely Need Digital Spaces

i pretty much always write in the same processor, once again because it helps set the mood. the main options include:

google drive (solid choice, cloud backup, mobile accessible)

dabble writer (cloud backup, links to nano, dark mode, chapter options)

write or die (only for actual writing—a scary but effective motivator; save elsewhere)

word/pages/etc. (ready to go on your computer, formatting options)

scrivener (great plotting tools, detailed interface)

i use dabble writer myself (they’re a nano sponsor, so you can get it free for this month, and as a double bonus you get it half off for the rest of the year if you win). and no, i’m not getting paid to wax poetic about them, but honestly i’ve used it to win the past two years and i adore it.

anyway my biggest tip here is that i SUPER SUPER DON’T RECOMMEND NON-CLOUD OPTIONS. it’s very risky, but if you must, do a proper back up at least once a week. that shiz is not worth it.

4. The Timer is Your New Best Friend

because i’ve heard this argument before: no, it’s not a crutch, and no, it’s not cheating. it’s literally best practices. i’m personally a big fan of this online timer, and i let it run for 15 min every time i write. after each session i check how many words i wrote, then after maybe a quick 1-2 min break, start over.

you can totally set the timer for longer or shorter periods, depending on what works for you. i’m a fan of the 15 min sessions bc it’s just long enough to get a bit of flow going, and just short enough that i can convince my spacy brain that we can get through it without wandering. it’s also a fantastic length for warring, if you’re down for that.

5. Write That Idea Down for Lewis’s Sake

the original idea for the chronicles of narnia came to c.s. lewis when he was at a restaurant, and thank the lord, he wrote it down on a napkin. he wouldn’t write it until some time later, but if he hadn’t written it down, he might’ve forgotten it. why is this important, you ask?

BC YOU WILL FORGET THINGS.

if you have an idea, write it down in your phone or your notebook or the waterproof paper in your shower, because i don’t care how sure you are that you’ll remember it, you super won’t. i’ve forgotten many solutions to plot holes in my time and i still hold vigils over their graves. don’t be me. write it down.

Step Four: Managing that Inner Critic of Yours

all right, pay attention. i’m not going to tell you not to edit, because i would be a massive hypocrite if i did. i totally edit during nano. the important part is letting your editor help you win, not hurt you. and that means gaming your critic’s system.

1. Have a Dedicated Deletion Section

many people hear “don’t delete anything” and baulk, because for some of us it’s distracting and we want to rewrite that section until it matches our vision. so, i’m here to tell you: delete it!! rewrite entire chapters!! just save the original content as part of your word count. this is another reason i love dabble, bc at the start of nano i just make a separate part of the book, label it “delete”, and any time i’m writing and dislike a sentence/paragraph i just dump it into that folder and move on. this way you still get to keep the numbers (and why shouldn’t you? you wrote them!) while also writing words you actually like. plus, sometimes that line you deleted in ch. 1 winds up being supremely pertinent in ch.15, and now you can just copy/paste it instead of having to try to remember what exactly you’d said.

2. Acknowledge Ranting as a Time Honoured Tradition

think there’s no precedent for that 2K diatribe you wrote on the london underground? well fear not, because you can’t possibly do worse than hugo’s entire chapters worth of content on the french sewer system! or melville’s frankly terrifying obsession with the finer features of whale biology!

like, yeah, maybe you’ll decide later you don’t need it, but for now, embrace that soap box. dead white guys have been doing it for centuries and still get places in college syllabi. the least you can do is give it a place in your word count.

Step Five: Have Fun!

i know, i know, it’s cliche, but seriously. if this isn’t fun, or at least rewarding, why are you doing it anyway? so enjoy it! send passages you’re proud of to your friends! daydream about it in the car on the way to work/school! cry over a notebook about the twist you just came up with! nano’s a time of fun and exploration, and you shouldn’t miss out on it because you’re thinking too much.

also, this might be counter productive to put at the end of an essay on nano, but don’t obsess over reading essays on nano :P there comes a time when one must simply do, and nano is pretty much the definition of that.

Dayton and Miami Valley region, Ohio Tornado Outbreak Timeline

The region’s record-breaking tornado outbreak started Memorial Day night (May 27) in Darke County, then wreaked havoc in Montgomery, Greene and Miami counties before it ended two hours and 35 minutes later near Jamestown.

The National Weather Service has confirmed that 15 tornadoes touched down on Memorial Day evening and into the next day, the largest one that hit Trotwood-Brookville-Riverside and Dayton was rated an EF4, carrying winds up to 170 mph, according to NWS investigators who are continuing to survey damage across the Miami Valley.

Here is a look at when the tornadoes started, how long they lasted, and where they went:

At 9:48 p.m. (May 27) — An EF-1 touched down 2 miles south of Hollansburg in Darke County. It was on the ground about 2 minutes and covered 1 ½ miles. It began just inside the state line, carrying a barn roof and walls about 200 yards along Hollansburg-Richmond Road. It continued over an open field until it destroyed another barn south of Moore Road.

At 9:57 p.m. (May 27) — An EF-1 touched down in New Madison, Darke County, and was on the ground about 2 minutes. Numerous large tree branches were damaged and minor roof damage was done. There was brick damage to the front facade of a downtown business.

At 10:02 p.m. (May 27) — An EF-3 tornado with winds reaching 150 mph was confirmed just west of Celina, near Township Line and Bunk Hill roads. It was on the ground 7 minutes, traveled roughly 6.6 miles and was at least 200 yards wide. At least three barns lost nearly half their roofs and dozens of homes were severely damaged. One home was lifted from its foundation with its walls intact and dropped in a field about 70 yards away. Homes in the Fairground Road and Touvelle Street area had significant damage. ETC got 51% attacked. Coinbase was first to announce it, though it appears the target was the gate.io exchange. Amusingly, the price hardly suffered. Searching in the dark night , filled with illusions of a write , there is a need to spread open the words that come in verse and non verse about .. but the validity of its mean on this the sacred post , be inverse to the mind ..

So there is a wait .. there is a feel for the ‘elixir of life’ to exonerate that which does not appear and make space for that which does .. but the liquidity of its want is absent and in waste .. the pages fly past the repaired vision , the limited repaired vision, and the findings are immense and in the beauteous realm of a reality that adorns minds of the poet or poets that have been collectively bound together in what in ‘the times of yore’ were referred to as ‘books’ ..

And a sudden remembrance lightens past the writing to the title ‘Books’ .. the neighbour at 17, Clive Road, Allahabad beyond the ‘mahua’ trees, of our lawn, of a Bengali family and Shashi Mukherji the friend .. the ‘guava’ trees in orchard , the roman rings of gymnastic exercise in the premise .. and .. the title at the gate of the residence that faced on the main road .. ‘The Books’ .. inside the home .. a Library of some of the most desired and exclusive books ..

They never meant much to us then .. we were young .. its the 50′s .. and it was more on the games played by the orchards of the house .. a circle made in the middle of it .. a stick placed in the middle .. ‘hickory dickory dok ..’ and one of us the ‘den’ and on determined signal the rest to climb up the trees about and the ‘den’ to try and catch us or touch us by climbing a tree, while the others on other trees spread out in the orchard to try and pick up the stick or small branch placed in the circle and throw it away far, to get time to get back on the trees, while the ‘den’ had to go down fetch the stick thrown away place it back in the circle .. and get on to touching anyone of us on a tree ..

There was also ‘gend tadi’ .. one ‘den’ given a ball, the ‘gend’, and he had to hit another - ‘tadi’ - of an entire lot of say 10 friends playing within a limited area .. if the ball touched anyone one he - we had no she then with us - became his team and could pass the ‘gend’ to him to facilitate touching or hitting another player and how gradually the team increased in numbers until there was just one left and he became the ‘den’ for the next round ..

OR .. there was ‘7 tiles’ .. what is more commonly called ‘pitthu’ .. in these parts I think .. or wherever .. some called it ‘lagori’ .. its been played so often by us all that it never has had occasion to be explained ..

Now .. the generation plays ‘other’ games .. on the mobile or the lap or the comp or at game galleries .. the times they have changed .. some of the physicality of the past has been restricted to the chair or the sitting .. monitors in hand to guide the game and win or loose .. no need for friends about .. connect the NEt and pull up time wise friend in NYC and start a board game in competition and it works .. beat the computer to a game of chess or tennis or bowling .. it all happens ..

Oh dear started of with trying to find a reasonable poetic topic to write about .. in the finding of ot in relevant book and look where we landed up ..

BUT .. its the times of the age .. there is such a volcano of cyclonic information entering the cerebrum, all at once that the head has had enough .. it simply refuses to respond .. to the most common answers .. or is it that one is loosing the memory .. with age ..

Will happen .. but .. when .. or has it already begun .. never know ..

SO .. you devise means and methods to remember or remind .. little slips of the ‘post its’ stuck all over the table and the tops of vulnerable spots .. scribbling it down on the reMarkable .. reMarkable .. did you know of it .. amazing gadget which you can write on without the use of paper .. a computer type note book .. in style and form .. look it up it is really quite remarkable .. 🤣 ..

.. and while you discover .. I cower in the retired ..
