4 Reasons to Love Seoul, South Korea
Seoul, Korea is one of the best places to live in the world and here's why:
1. The Food
Korean food is some of the most delicious in the world. Korea is the home of kalbi (marinated barbecued ribs), bulgogi (spicy, marinated pork), kimchichiggae (spicy soup), bibimbab (mixed rice), etc. You also get more side dishes than main dishes, which can be nice in mixing up your eating experience. Most importantly, in Korea, you get lots and lots of Kimchi. Kimchi is delicious and great for your health. When Korean came out relatively unscathed from the SARS outbreak, Korean credited the nation's kimchi consumption. Also, it's important to note that most restaurants (even McDonald's) delivers. And they deliver the food with teenage boys on scooters. What more could you ask for? Also, I should mention that McDonald's delivers 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Also, there's live octopus.
2. Korean Bath Houses
A Korean bath house is one of the most wonderful places you will ever go. The houses are split into two sections: one for males, one for females. Everyone strips down completely naked jumps into various little pools with different herbs and salts in them. They are also various temperatures. By the end of your experience, you will feel more refreshed than you ever have in your life.
Also, Korean bath houses have bidet sprayers. Bidet sprayers are like strong shower heads that are on a long cable so you can point in any direction. Bidet sprayers help you clean every part of your body, especially the parts you normally don't get to clean very well. Additionally, you can also find bidet sprayers in most of the toilets around the city.
3. Heated Floors
When it gets cold in the winter, at least your floors will be heated (ondol). This is nice, because instead of sleeping on a bed, most Koreans sleep on pads on the floor. Additionally, instead of sitting on chairs at meals, most Koreans sit on pillows on the floors. Heated floors are nice on a cold day when you can get home and walk around barefoot on the warm, heated floors.
4. Technology
Seoul is more wired than any other city in the world. It is the birthplace of global electronics companies like Samsung and LG. Apartments in Seoul are controlled from cell phones and central keypads. Facial recognition is used in addition to bio-recognition security systems. Once a giant landfill, Seoul's Digital Media City's 557,00 square meters of electronic nirvana is the home for broadcasting, film production, games, telecom companies, cable channels, online shopping centers and e-learning.

Samsung Workers To Strike: First Walkout In Company’s History
Tumblr media
(Source – BBC)
For the first time in its history, Samsung Electronics in South Korea is facing a strike. The Nationwide Samsung Electronics Union (NSEU), which represents tens of thousands of workers, announced a one-day strike set for June 7. This unprecedented move comes after unsuccessful negotiations regarding pay and bonus arrangements.
During a press conference streamed on its official YouTube channel, the NSEU revealed that 28,000 members, nearly a quarter of Samsung’s workforce in South Korea, would participate in the strike. Union representatives expressed their frustration, stating, “We can no longer afford to see a company that has no will to negotiate. We will fight for workers’ rights and interests.”
Demands In Strike for Fair Compensation and Transparency
Son Woomok, a union leader, highlighted that many NSEU members are employed in Samsung’s flagship semiconductor unit. In an interview with CNN, he emphasized the union’s demands for transparent and fair performance bonuses and wage increases. “There has never been a proper wage negotiation. It has always been carried out by announcing the outcome at the labor-management council, which does not include our union, and the company telling us to accept it,” Son said.
In response, a Samsung spokesperson told CNN, “The company remains committed to engaging in good faith negotiations with the union and is making every sincere effort to come to an agreement.”
Samsung’s Recent Struggles and Future Prospects
The world’s largest memory chipmaker has faced significant challenges in recent years. The COVID-19 pandemic led to a historic shortage of computer chips, followed by a slump in demand as global economic uncertainty dampened consumer appetite for electronics. In January, Samsung reported an operating profit of 6.567 trillion won ($4.8 billion) for 2023, marking its weakest annual performance since 2009. Additionally, Samsung lost its position as the world’s top smartphone maker.
Despite these setbacks, Samsung remains optimistic about the future, particularly due to the AI boom. The company expects a resurgence in demand for mobile devices, driven by the rollout of new AI-powered smartphones. Last month, Samsung reported a more than 10-fold increase in first-quarter operating profit, fueled by forecasts of high demand for AI and high-end chips. In this area, Samsung competes with industry giants such as Intel (INTC) and Taiwan’s TSMC.
Strategic Position in the Global Microchip Industry
The production of advanced microchips is heavily concentrated in Taiwan and South Korea. While Taiwan’s semiconductor industry is larger and more dominant, South Korea is determined to bolster its position in the global market. As one of the key players in this competitive industry, Samsung’s performance and strategic decisions will significantly impact the broader market dynamics.
The upcoming strike by Samsung’s workforce underscores the critical issues of fair compensation and transparent negotiation processes within the company. As the labor union and Samsung continue their negotiations, the outcome will not only affect the company’s internal operations but also have wider implications for the global tech industry.
The world will be watching closely as Samsung navigates this challenging period, balancing its commitment to workers with its strategic goals in the rapidly evolving technology landscape.

Microsoft unveils new Copilot+ PCs featuring AI capabilities
.pp-multiple-authors-boxes-wrapper display:none; img width:100%;
Microsoft has launched a new type of personal computer designed with AI capabilities, underscoring the company’s commitment to integrating cutting-edge technology across its product lineup.
This new category not only boosts Microsoft’s ventures but also positions it to compete directly with AI-led advancements from tech giants such as Alphabet and Apple. During an event at Microsoft’s campus in Redmond, Washington, CEO Satya Nadella unveiled the Copilot+ PCs. These computers, developed in collaboration with manufacturers like Acer and Asustek Computer, align with Microsoft’s stock prices reaching near all-time highs amid Wall Street’s expectations that AI will significantly boost earnings for major tech firms.
[embedded content]
These PCs are engineered to manage a greater share of AI tasks locally, reducing reliance on cloud data centres. Priced from $1,000, the devices are slated to begin shipping on June 18. The lineup includes laptops from established manufacturers such as Dell Technologies, HP, and Samsung Electronics, complemented by two models from Microsoft itself.
Technical innovations and product range
The Surface Laptop, Microsoft’s inaugural Copilot+ device, features a Qualcomm Snapdragon X series system-on-chip. This chip includes a built-in AI accelerator capable of delivering up to 45 tera operations per second (TOPS) of computing power. Available in 13.5-inch and 15-inch models, these laptops offer up to 64 gigabytes of RAM and 1 terabyte of flash storage.
Joining the Surface Laptop is the new Copilot+ version of the Surface Pro, a versatile two-in-one PC. This 10.6-inch tablet converts into a laptop with a detachable keyboard, known as the Flex Keyboard, which also functions as a wireless connector and stylus charger for the Surface Pro.
Both the Surface Laptop and Surface Pro are equipped with the Snapdragon X processor, available with up to 32 gigabytes of RAM and one terabyte of storage. The high-end models feature an OLED display, enhancing visual quality significantly.
A distinctive feature of the Copilot+ series is “Recall,” which allows the device to log all user activities—from web browsing to voice chats—and store this data locally. This functionality creates a searchable history that users can access to revisit past activities, even months later.
Yusuf Mehdi, head of consumer marketing at Microsoft, announced at the press event that the company anticipates selling 50 million AI PCs in the coming year. He emphasised that the enhanced capabilities of AI assistants, now operating directly on these PCs, will make a compelling case for consumers considering upgrades.
Despite a 15% decline in global PC shipments last year, according to Gartner, Microsoft is optimistic about the potential market share for its Copilot+ PCs.
Analyst Ben Bajarin from Creative Strategies remarked: “People just need to be convinced that the device experience alone justifies this entirely new category of Copilot+ machines.”
Echoing Intel’s 2011 strategy with the “Ultrabook,” which aimed to compete against Apple’s MacBook Air, Microsoft’s introduction of the “Copilot+” category is poised to redefine the slim-form Windows laptop market.
Microsoft also revealed that GPT-4o, the latest advancement from OpenAI’s ChatGPT, will soon be integrated into Copilot. Additionally, the new series of Surface Pro tablets and Surface Laptops will incorporate Qualcomm chips based on Arm Holdings’ designs, utilising the innovative Prism technology to adapt software originally designed for Intel and AMD processors for use on Arm-based systems.
At a recent demonstration, Microsoft showcased how its new devices, running Adobe photo editing software, outperformed an Apple device, just weeks after Apple introduced a new AI-focused chip expected to enhance future laptops.
Challenges and opportunities in the evolving PC market
Facing strong competition in the traditional PC market, Microsoft continues to lead in integrating the latest AI trends into consumer products. This strategic initiative, fueled by its partnership with OpenAI, aims to secure a leadership position in the fiercely competitive AI industry, challenging rivals like Alphabet.
Just last week, both OpenAI and Alphabet’s Google introduced new AI technologies that support real-time, voice-responsive interactions, establishing new benchmarks for AI voice assistants. Meanwhile, Windows PC manufacturers are contending with increased pressure from Apple, whose custom Arm-based chips have set new standards in battery life and performance.

Nvidia supplier SK Hynix says its high-bandwidth memory chips used in AI processors almost sold out for 2025
Tumblr media
SK Hynix announced on Thursday that its high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips, integral to AI processors, are completely sold out for the year and nearly exhausted for 2025. This surge in demand comes as businesses aggressively expand their AI services. As a key supplier to Nvidia, the world’s second-largest memory chip maker is gearing up to dispatch samples of its latest innovation, the 12-layer HBM3E, starting May, with mass production slated for the third quarter. “The HBM market anticipates sustained growth alongside the expansion of data and AI model sizes,” stated SK Hynix CEO Kwak Noh-Jung during a news conference. “We foresee an annual demand growth of approximately 60 per cent in the mid- to long-term.” Competing with US rival Micron Technology and domestic giant Samsung Electronics in the HBM sector, SK Hynix held exclusive rights to supply these chips to Nvidia until March, analysts revealed. However, major buyers of AI chips are now keen on diversifying their suppliers to bolster operational margins. With Nvidia currently dominating around 80 per cent of the global AI chip market, this strategic move is poised to reshape the industry landscape. Micron has reported that its HBM chip inventory is fully depleted for 2024, with the majority of its 2025 supply already spoken for. The company intends to distribute samples of its 12-layer HBM3E chips to clients come March. "As advancements in AI functionalities and performance outpace projections, the demand for ultra-high-performance chips like the 12-layer variants appears to be escalating faster compared to 8-layer HBM3Es," remarked Jeff Kim, research head at KB Securities.
