i love that doll!! She looks soooo cute! I'm not a doll customizer myself but I love watching videos on it, it's just such a beautiful and fun art form!! Do you have any favorite doll customizers you follow or look up to?

Thanks!! Off the top of my head, some doll customizers I like over on instagram are jililijililiji, elfgutz, and c_u_l_u_r. And on YouTube, I’ll watch just about anyone who’s making a doll that catches my eye ^u^

Somehow my doll hobby became about acquisition and FOMO re: discontinuations, and about making sure I bought something I wanted in time, and about not losing the "perfection" of a new doll's condition by doing something that could "ruin" them once I had them. I just now looked at Elfgutz's stuff for the first time in years and I realize that I wish I had been more willing to do extreme crazy mods like that, now I'm scared to do anything with my (all irreplaceable in at least one way: unique faceup, discontinued, unique resin batch etc.) dolls and I regret that's how my hobby ended up.

I couldn't have just started with a "cheap" "starter doll" in retrospect because teenage me wouldn't have the time or energy to put into making them look the way I wanted and it would have likely put me off the hobby to have a doll I couldn't make pretty. Instead I shelled out for something that looked good... but too good to "ruin", I really don't know if that was a mistake. Given the circumstances I'm happy with my first doll, still my favorite after a decade, but I do still regret how my version of the BJD hobby became "saving up for the next doll" instead of "making and enjoying art in this medium".

I don't want to sell all my dolls and start over because they really are all irreplaceable in the sense that if I regretted losing them I wouldn't be able to get something identical again. I hate this feeling of helplessness, like I can't DO anything with my dolls. It doesn't help that most of my life has been this way in the sense of acquiring good material things, a good living situation etc... acquiring a "good" life and trying to maintain it rather than enjoying living it. I'm lucky and privileged and fucking insecure.

Sorry for going off topic for that last part. I just don't know how to break myself out of being frozen in fear of doing ANYTHING to jeopardize what I have, be it life stuff, or hobby stuff. I don't know if there's anything less extreme than throwing the doll (or me) in the fucking garbage that would actually make a difference at this point. How can I break free?

I'm a trans guy and I'm gonna get my first bjd kinda soon..... and I'm really hoping to get an elfgutz faceup for him. But I'm so conflicted about it, because I HATE how elfgutz acts. Not only their extreme stance on recasts ("if you've even owned one unknowingly you're digusting!!!") but also the heavy transphobia they've expressed in the past. I can't find anyone else who does that gorgeous style of faceup — I'm DEFINITELY not supporting dollzkastle (what a fucking creep) but there's literally no-one else that does that sort of yamikawaii, bright pastel creepy-cute faceup :( If the choice is between dollzkastle or elfgutz, I'm def going elfgutz

Unless Elfgutz, know for plural mental illness and hate or bullying behavior, finds out you're not made at it's image and decides to destroy your doll.

Seriously, there's others options, or even taking pictures of a faceup you like and doing it yourself? I do all my faceups.

And if you're not into it, try sending pictures to artist (neutral or recast friendly) and ask if they can mimic the same style. I know even big Ali stores do it, so it shouldn't be that hard.
