Heard some people saying that Drayton and Kieran might represent Zekrom and Reshiram's ideals but I think it's the opposite. Drayton is the reverse arcana version of Reshiram representing dishonesty and Kieran is the reverse arcana version of Zekrom representing obssessive idealism.

Lumi Plays Pokémon: White 2 Bug Monotype Run- Part 24- The End

Well folks, after all this time, we're here. No wasting time, I've already posted the final team and movesets, so let's just get started, and we're starting off by fighting Caitlin!

It's time for Operation: Candy.

I switched out his item before battle, because I knew Caitlin would lead Musharna. I click Shell Smash, and she Yawns. I boost again, and she predicts the switch, trying to Yawn again, but I stay in and Candy falls asleep. But wait!

I was ready for it with a Chesto Berry! Four X-Scissors later and Caitlin is done. Nice job Candy!

Next up is Grimsley.

I tentatively try another strategy, but this time there's no need for a Chesto Berry, so the Shell Bell goes back on Candy. His Liepard leads, going for Fake Out, then Night Slash, while I get up a Shell Smash. He then goes for Attract after I get another Shell Smash in- but it doesn't faze Candy. Another four X-Scissors and Grimsley is no more.

The two easy fights are over, time for some real challenge as I take on Shauntal.

I lead Gumball against her Cofagrigus, knowing the key to taking it down is Toxic. I set up the poison and tank a Psychic, chipping her down with Dig before she takes out Gumball. With about half health, I switch to Teabag, hoping he can finish the job. He just about can't. Cofagrigus gets off Will O' Wisp and faints to poison.

In comes Chandelure, and with Teabag's attack cut in half by the burn, I let Teabag faint to a Fire Blast- though not before weakening it with Shadow Claw! I send in Candy, who hangs in after a Fire Blast and KOs with Rock Slide. Unfortunately, he can't do much to the incoming Golurk before he's knocked out himself.

I send in Lava Cake, hoping to get the job done with Giga Drain. It works, though we take some big Earthquake damage that leaves Lava Cake softened up for Drifblim to pick off. It's okay though, because Lava Cake's Flamethrower also softened up Drifblim for Lemondrop to swoop in with a Thunder and finish things off. Another victory!

Now comes the scariest Elite 4 member, I think. I make preparations by giving Candy Aerial Ace over Bulldoze, and give Lava Cake a Twistedspoon to boost Psychic before we go to fight Marshal.

I intend to start the fight with Lava Cake, and blast Throh out of existence with Psychic but uh.

I forgot to switch my lead. Gumball gets some chip damage in and goes down so I can get a clean switch and Psychic knocks out Throh. Sorry Gumball!

Next is the scary Conkeldurr. I go for Psychic, praying Lava Cake can do enough, but it's too bulky, and our beloved Volcarona goes down to Stone Edge. Thankfully though, Marshal doesn't heal, and Lemondrop's Thunder is enough to finish it!

In comes Sawk, and we break his Sturdy with a Volt Switch to Drumstick, who easily wins the 1-vs-1. He's weakened though, and the final Pokémon, Mienshao, knocks him out. But Thunder from Lemondrop does the job again, and Marshal is defeated!

Just the champion to go.

Iris is no joke! One of the toughest Champions, and with so many Dragon Types on her team, she's gonna be scary when we have no Ice or Dragon moves ourselves!

I lead with Lemondrop to scout out her lead- I don't remember it and don't wanna spoil myself!

Oh. It's Hydreigon. Scary.

I know it must be going for a fire move this turn, and sure enough it does, as I Volt Switch to Lava Cake to take the Flamethrower. Thankfully, Signal Beam does enough to stop the monster in its tracks before things get scary!

In comes Druddigon. Oh yikes, this Druddigon. It has Flamethrower and Rock Slide, the same combo that I wiped to on Victory Road against a Flygon. It takes out Lava Cake, as Signal Beam isn't enough when it's a neutral move. I send in Gumball, hoping a Megahorn will be enough? We miss. Almost knocked out by Rock Slide. We try again? It's not enough. Okay, not Gumball then.

I look at the party, and feel like I should save Candy for later in the fight, you never know when you'll need Shell Smash, and Drumstick is useless when it has a fire move. I don't think Lemondrop is the right call either, so I hope Teabag can outspeed and get the KO? He can't.

Oh dear, things are looking bad to say the least. Time for the last ditch effort- Candy, please save us! We Shell Smash, and take a hit from the Druddigon. Finally, we outspeed, and an X-Scissor does him in. We're not out of the woods yet though!

Lapras next, and all I can do is pray that Rock Slide is enough. It is!! Candy gets another KO, and Iris sends in Archeops. Even with our Shell Smash, I'm worried we're not faster- but we are! Another Rock Slide KO!

Iris' penultimate Pokémon is Aggron. It has Sturdy, so it tanks the Bulldoze, and goes for... Autotomise? What? With that wasted turn, Candy takes one more KO!

Down to the final Pokémon, Haxorus. X-Scissor does a lot, but not enough, and Candy's sweep is stopped in its tracks with Earthquake. It's two versus one. But we don't have to worry, Drumstick comes in, takes the Earthquake like a champ, and ends it with one more Iron Head. We're the Pokémon champions!

And so we're inducted into the Hall of Fame, and the credits roll. I think about how grateful I am to the Bugs that got me here, and all of you for your support. Our journey is finally over.

Just to clarify, no I am not counting champions from spinoff (like Trace) or ones like Nemona - even though yes she technically has a champion title, she's not directly an obstacle right after the Elite Four.

So I have this idea/headcanon/theory about Drayton:

We can see during the story of the DLC that he's got some stake in making sure the player character (aka: you) kicks Kieran out of the champion spot.

He seems very invested in making sure you not only get to join the club but that you will be the one to finally beat Kieran. He's seen pulling strings to make this easier for you, such as taking you to get signed up personally and allowing you to skip straight to challenging the Elite 4, and also waiving your BP cost to fight him personally.

Normally when someone seeks to dethrone someone with more power than themselves, it's to gain that power for their own. Not this time though, as Drayton says that he doesn't want the responsibility and the work of being the club leader, as the Champion becomes upon gaining said title.

So what does he want?

I don't think it's really got much to do with Kieran, and even though there is clearly some animosity between him and Carmine, I don't think it has much to do with her either.

I think it's Iris.

It's pretty widely accepted at this point that Drayton is Drayden's grandson, and who is Iris? Well, wikis state she is his "adoptive granddaughter." So it's likely that Iris and Drayton spent significant amounts time around Drayden at the same time.

And I think both of them were training under him.

Iris went on to become the Champion of Unova. We all know that. Iris. The one who isn't related to Drayden by blood.

And what happened to Drayton? He was either sent off to Blueberry Academy or chose to go to do more studying there.

He tells the player at one point that he was held back a year three times.

I don't think that was because he simply wasn't putting in the effort. I think it was deliberate. Not only is he absorbing more knowledge by staying longer, but he's also avoiding going home to Unova proper.

Back to where Iris is Champion.

Why? Because he's bitter about the girl his flesh-and-blood grandfather took under his wing doing better than him. It's not about being champion specifically. He doesn't want all that responsibility, but she outshone him and probably took up a lot of his grandfather's attention as a result. I'd be bitter about that too!

His wanting to make sure you, the player, became Champion is about dethroning Kieran because he's bitter about who the Unovan Champion is, and he's taking it out on the only Champion he's actually able to influence.

Him bending over Kieran after his loss to call him "ex-champion" and rub salt in the wound might be seen as him simply not reading the room, but it reads as malicious to me. He's gloating because he chose the person who took him down, and probably imagining Iris in a similar position, which he may see as a return to equal footing and a chance to win back the attention of his grandfather.

By putting you on the top of their little Blueberry pyramid, at least he's essentially endorsed you as the Champion rather than being stuck with someone he (and everybody else) didn't really want there.

Kieran being a douchebag to everyone else (see that one kid he practically kicked out for "not trying hard enough") was a bonus, really. It would make people less suspicious of him for wanting to make sure he didn't stay Champion.

And just as another bonus, if you happen to subscribe to the idea of Drayton and Carmine's prior relationship being something that ended badly (hence her animosity toward him), that would only add fuel to the fire so to speak, making him that much more determined to mess up Kieran to get back at her.

In conclusion: Drayton wants Kieran gone simply because Kieran holds a Champion title, and he resents Iris (the Unovan Champion) for outshining him while they were both training under his grandfather Drayden. He's just taking his frustration out on Kieran. However, there is merit for Kieran's behaviour and his relation to Carmine having some impact, too.

A lot of this is just speculation (I don't have the time nor the energy to spend hours digging for hard evidence) so I recognise it isn't a proper theory and probably has some glaring holes. Don't flame me too hard 🙏

Fellow submas fans what are your favorite reunion scenarios

And I want to hear two things from y’all:

1. Your favorite way to imagine the reunion happening in your head

2. Your favorite reunion scene in a currently existing fanfiction (AND TELL ME THE FIC/LINK IT SO I CAN READ IT IF I HAVEN’T ALREADY)

My response to prompt 1 turned longer than expected so I’m putting it under the read more, but my answer to 2 is fucking @dittolicous’s fic ‘the only way to be sure of catching a train is to miss the one before it’ I swear to god it’s the most delicious submas fic I’ve ever read I have reread it so many times purely for the reunion alone but then I get sucked into the rest because it’s just a beautiful story and all of the characterization is my absolute favorite and. It. Is. AMAZING.

Anyway my answer to #1 is below the cut- it’s long- it got away from me- I would love for y’all to read it but if you don’t it’s chill and I’d still love to hear your own thoughts on my prompts-

For me for #1 I LOVE the idea of Ingo getting his memories back but somehow the reunion is still a surprise for both him and Emmet. The way I have it play out in my head is a whole story that could hypothetically be a fanfiction if it weren’t for the fact that I have very few details lined out and also that takes effort.

But essentially Volo’s still being a bitch but after a talk with Akari, Arceus realizes some of the mistakes it made with bringing her into Hisui with no prior warning and forcing her to tackle everything alone, so it approaches her and Ingo to request their help in stopping Volo once and for all, returning both of their memories at the same time. It also promises to send them help, but does not elaborate on what the help will exactly look like. It does say that it will call on them for assistance once it has chosen those who will join them. It also says that if they are successful in their endeavors, they will be rewarded with one favor from the God.

Naturally after getting his memories back Ingo’s a whole mess of grief but having committed to staying in Hisui for the time being he has no choice but to stay. In this, Akari is Dawn the DPP protag and Arceus gave her a false memory of what her name was when she was sent to Hisui. She’s also not doing super great after getting her memories back but not as bad as Ingo who was there longer than her (I’ve settled on 4 years for Ingo and 1.5 years for Dawn)

However, Arceus may have seemed like it was still deciding who to send when it spoke to them, but it already knew exactly who to send.

And it involved righting the wrongs committed by Volo and Giratina with the space-time distortions.

Cut to modern day Unova! Emmet is a wreck in his brother’s absense, but he’s doing better than he was in the first couple years. Things have changed for those Ingo left behind; Elesa and Skyla start dating while he’s gone in this fic, and I like to imagine that Iris becomes Champion in his absense (specifically because Hil(da/bert) were still missing, so Unova technically had no Champion and Alder had fully retired from the battling scene. This was leading to complications in getting clearance to branch out the search for Ingo to other regions and Iris, fully sick of it, challenges the League herself and Drayden calls in a favor from Alder to get her a ‘Champion’ to battle. And she ends up being one of Unova’s best Champions in many different ways! Also I imagine the events of BW2 absolutely happened except Rosa/Nate decided not to challenge the Elite Four. Oh god that was quite a tangent uh)

And then one night four years after his disappearance (and like two weeks after Arceus asks Ingo and Dawn for their help), Emmet and Elesa both have the same very weird dream.

In which Arceus asks them both for their assistance, because shit’s going down in ancient Sinnoh and it needs more human help in getting it to stop. It does NOT tell them why EXACTLY they specifically are being asked, just that there IS a specific reason it’s asking them of all people and that they won’t regret going. It gives them two days to think and decide, also offering them the reward of a favor if they succeed.

This gives the two of them time to not only decide, but also TELL THEIR LOVED ONES THAT THIS IS HAPPENING

Emmet’s initially hesitant about doing it, but the favor seals the deal for him. With no context to what Arceus is doing at this point, he is determined to try to use the favor he will receive from the God to get Ingo back. He doesn’t really tell anyone except Elesa, not wanting to get anyone’s hopes up in case Arceus is unable to help, but deep down he hopes that if NOTHING else he will at least get closure.

Elesa was down from the start, she has no reason to say no and the favor is very enticing. For reasons.

(Cute side note I only have Elesa’s favor decided on. And she asks Arceus to ensure that on her and Skyla’s wedding day, the weather will be absolutely perfect. Perfect temperature, partly cloudy, slight breeze. Just exactly what they need for a beautiful wedding. And Arceus gifts her a pen that it tells her to write the date down with once it is decided upon and it will make sure it happens.)

(I also think that up until that point the two of them had absolutely talked about getting married but Elesa wasn’t ready because she had decided years ago that if she ever got married she wanted the twins to walk her down the aisle (bad relationship with her parents) and. yeah)

Anyway! They were instructed to go to Sinnoh if they decided to go and so Skyla flies them there (she doesn’t stay in Sinnoh, it was made quite clear that Emmet and Elesa would potentially be gone for a couple months (and they are)). They go up Mount Coronet and climb The Stairs into Arceus’s domain to meet with Arceus in the flesh this time.

Where, before sending them to Hisui, it tells them a story. About a man named Volo, who wished to remake the world so no one would suffer, so he manipulated Giratina into doing his bidding and started ripping tears open in space-time. Creating space-time distortions, and eventually even the rift above Mount Coronet.

It also says that when were opened, usually they connected Hisui to the modern world, and usually, the rift openings that were much smaller in the modern day than in Hisui, would open in areas far enough away from human civilization to prevent humans from being sucked through them.

With one notable exception.

Arceus reveals that four years ago, one particular distortion opened in the Hisuian Icelands that connected specifically to the subway tunnels underneath Nimbasa City.

And Emmet and Elesa understand instantly.

Both are a mess at this point, Emmet much more so. He hadn’t expected to get answers right off the bat. But there’s the terror rising in his heart of if his brother was dropped into unfamiliar, freezing cold territory 200 years in the past, would he have survived that???

He asks Arceus with a choked voice if his brother is still alive.

Arceus responds by calling Ingo into its domain, having called upon him prior to this to ‘ensure that those it was sending to the past would have someone to guide them through the unfamiliar time and place’.

Leaving the twins open to having a truly glorious, loud, and extremely emotional surprise reunion.

(Aside from knowing it wanted to send Ingo and Dawn’s loved ones back to be reunited with them, Arceus thought it would be VERY funny to have a team of six humans like humans have teams of six Pokemon. Barry and Lucas end up being the other two sent back to Hisui, to reunite with Dawn.)

I have not a lot of details about the meat of this story figured out. The vague outline is Emmet having separation anxiety, Elesa feeling like a weight is lifted off of her shoulders because she no longer has to grieve Ingo while simultaneously keep Emmet going despite his own heavier grief, Ingo having serious identity issues and feeling inadequate because he forgot Emmet while his brother grieved him so heavily, so he doesn’t talk to him about his own trauma and grief and ends up having a mental breakdown eventually that Emmet helps him through, and Volo has found some other legendary from another region that he’s using to try and remake the world again. I haven’t decided which one.

And then once Volo is beat they go home, both twins firmly convinced that their reunion was Arceus granting them their favors early as ya know, Emmet wanted his brother back and Ingo wanted his FAMILY back. Arceus catches on to this and promptly informs them that no, that was part of its plan from the beginning, that it was merely righting a wrong it should have righted long before then, and that their favors are still very much available to them. They do not use them at that time, since they did not expect to still have the favors, and they did not have anything else in mind.

(Elesa asks for her aforementioned one on the spot. At this point she’s so excited to have a much more serious conversation with Skyla about their future, and with her best friend alive and safely home, she’s finally ready for the next step.)

All the weary time travelers are returned to modern Sinnoh. Skyla hops on her plane the moment Elesa calls. They all go to Twinleaf town, Unovans included while they wait for Skyla. Dawn reunites with her Mom.

Skyla is fucking ecstatic when she sees Ingo’s alive, and they fly home to Unova after saying goodbye to Dawn, Barry, Lucas, and Johanna. They specifically fly to Opelucid, thinking Uncle Drayden’s house is a better place for Ingo to readjust to the modern day than their apartment in the middle of bustling Nimbasa City.

They are absolutely correct, but that doesn’t stop the breakdown Ingo has when he finally comes to terms with the fact that he’s home and can rest and not have to worry about his safety in the wilderness with angry wild Pokemon constantly posing threats to his well-being.

But he has his family by his side, who are more than happy to help him through it :3

Streamer!Ash AU: Do any of Ash's future companions watch his streams before joining up with him? What about League members (such as Gym Leaders, Elite 4, and Champions)?

The Kanto League Members and Tracey don't watch the streams before meeting him because by that point it's still too early for it to really be popular.

Most of the Johto League members also probably don't watch it yet, but Casey (the baseball girl from a few episodes) apparently watched them from the start and was inspired to stream her own journey.

By Hoenn he's actually gained a pretty big following, plus Lance warned the other Champions ahead of time because holy hell this kid gets into a lot of weird dangerous shit, so we get most League Members at least vaguely recognizing him from now on with a few fans in the mix. Max definitely watches considering he already watched Ash's League matches in canon and May definitely does not considering her canonical complete disinterest in Pokemon Training in her canon debut.

As for his other companions, Cilan and Clemont will at least be vaguely aware since they're Gym Leaders, Serena obviously does Because Serena, not sure for Dawn, Iris, Bonnie or the Alola crew, Goh started watching after the Mewtwo incident Because Mew and Chloe only knows it as "That Show Goh Never Shuts Up About," and Team Plasma tries to keep N from finding out the stream exists but he totally finds it anyway.

also i've said it before but like. raihan is fine as a character. i like him. i think he's hilarious & hilariously tall. but the dude is genuinely an embarrassment to other famous dragon-type trainers. drayden and iris i'm so sorry you have to be associated with this guy. drasna of the kalos elite 4 may be forgettable but at least her team wasn't as awful as raihan's. i can't speak for hassel's character in paldea because i've never played through scarlet/violet but his team does at least look marginally better than raihan's. this is counting rematches too btw and lance is saved from being in the same boat as raihan by sheer virtue of the fact that his rematch in hgss has him adding a garchomp and salamence to his team. drake of the hoenn elite 4 is much better than lance already and his oras rematch gave him a really good boost. but raihan's teams are so continually pathetic across the board. there is NO reason he should be hailed as the strongest trainer in galar save for leon when ALL his teams are so utterly BAD. it's genuinely ridiculous when you think about it for more than five seconds

HELOOOO, fellow Wamuu fan! <3 I hope you're ready for the whole novel, because it's a lot of lore :'D (warning for long post)

I'll first start with the wifey and her family! I went with the idea that there would be survivors after Kars' massacre. There was one among them who actually felt compassion for humans and believed they were equals instead of inferior. This fella is called Zdub and he had beef with Kars 24/7 so they couldn't stand each other. Zdub married Blaxia, this redhead lady who was one of the elite warriors from the tribe. Unfortunately, Blaxia died during the massacre, so Zdub ran away as far as possible from Kars and his bloodthirst. The couple has two children: Phoenix (elder brother) and Iris (little sister, who will soon become Wamuu's wife ♥)

Iris is the total opposite from her peers; she is kind, gentle and very maternal . Zdub ran away with both his children and settled in Europe, Ancient Dacia to be exact (now Romania - and that can be noticed in Iris' attire).

Her Mode is the Water Mode, which is mostly manifested in her luscious hair locks, in the same manner as the waves of the sea. At about 7000 years of age, she finally leaves Dacia for a journey to the Roman Empire. There, she meets the Pillarmen and saves one of the last survivors from the Hamon tribe (That kid from the flashbacks who got killed by Kars in canon </3). Meanwhile, she dates Wamuu more often, resulting in a beautiful and sincere relationship.

After the first night together, Iris is shunned by Kars upon discovering the relationship, but she remains pregnant with the first child, Mysphite. As soon as the peace is established in the 20th century, the lovebirds finally move in together in St Moritz with their little daughter. (Yes, Caesar doesn't die and the chase for the Red Aja is stopped; this is how Wamuu first met his little girl...after 4 years :'D he even took off those spikes to be able to hug her)

Volta is Goth and works in IT; also he is very intelligent and proficient in technology. He invented a bracelet that can help his kind stay in the sun without the help of the Red Stone of Aja. Also, he has a driver's license. He's got the Lightning Mode through his hair and fingertips. 🖥️🌩️

Calliope/Callie is into Pastel colours and fashion design, just like her mama <3 She is literally a Pillar Barbie; however, she doesn't have a Mode, which often makes her insecure in the family. She inherits Wamuu's warrior spirit though 👗🎀

Despite their opposite aesthetics, the twins get along very well and support each other anytime; even in dumb stuff XD (mostly Callie's idea)

The pink eyes are inherited from grandma Blaxia 💕

Both are crazy about Asian food because it was Iris' main craving while pregnant with them both 🥺

I have something in the works of a very minor AU for this franchise (plus an AU of the AU I am currently hyperfixating on that has many of the same lore + all of the headcanons & changes but is still quite different, however no one is here for that).

There are many things different between this and the actual games, but the lore is relatively the same (just the main protags of each region are the same person in this instead, as all of them were replaced by an OC of mine created because I always used the same name for all my playthroughs).

It mainly just changes certain ‘mon's typings (and also sometimes abilities) and throws in some of my headcanons, a decent chunk being from others that I have since adopted.

First off, the Pokémon changes:

Charizard is now Fire/Dragon (the point of dragon-types in gen 1 is irrelevant)

Hitmonchan must instead evolve from Tyrogue by having higher attack than defense at level 20, while the opposite is for Hitmonlee at the same level

Johtonian Typhlosion is now Fire/Rock (it's the Volcano Pokemon, what did you expect?)

Melony is Drayden's sister (iirc you can be American while being the sibling of someone who is British due to how America works)

Melony is the mother of Unova's Subway Bosses, with Gordie and the twins being half-brothers

The subway twins are trans and aro-ace

The subway twins are also autistic, but it's more visible in Emmet as Ingo masks and is way better at that than he should be (even if some traits still shine through, like rambling about certain things and also zero volume control)

Iris is actually Galarian and the cousin of Galarian Champion Leon as well as his little brother, Hop (she's canonically not initially from Unova)

Given Iris' incredibly close bond with Drayden—which gave him the honorary title of "Grandpa" by her (as Drayden was the one who helped her after he brought her to Unova), Drayton of the BB League Elite Four has an honorary cousin (so do the subway twins + Gordie but shush)

Their reactions initially are shocked but there's been stories floating around about pokemon taking on human forms since forever, so it's not exactly unbelievable. Definitely explained a lot about Kieran and how shy he is, especially when they read up on kitakami's ogre lore.

I think he'd get revealed sometimes during Indigo Disk, and it was mostly because of his transformation failing at some point so he refused to leave his room. Him missing for a few days was definitely noticed.

After the drama of it all the overall reactions are:

Lacy- super fascinated by his Emobdy aspect and how his masks can change his typing. She is very upset there is no fairy mask so that becomes her personal project. Fairy type Ogerpon, pink cloak and all. She gets invested in his grandfather's craftsmanship and how the crystals used in the mask function like tera crystals. She's her daddy's daughter she likes rocks. Kieran likes to hang out with her because she's so invested in how he, as a pokemon functions and honestly it's really helpful.

Crispin- confused but supportive. Feels super dumb because Kieran was the only person that genuinely would sit there and try his cooking when he was trying to figure out a new recipe, and he's always appreciated that. Legit just dawned on him that he was feeding his friend pokemon food. Its the equivalent of baking your bro dog biscuits for months and he's been eating them like cookies. Nothing changes between them they are still friends. Brocode means not being salty over your bro hiding this sort of thing before.

Amarys- honestly more worried about Carmine because she's been a huge mess all semester but knowing this it all makes sense. I see Amarys as someone who is very supportive and good at listening. Kieran would be most comfortable about transforming into ogerpon in front of her over the others in the elite 4 because of this. She's just got that presence thar reminds him of his sister and he finds that comforting. Also canyon biome caves reminds him of his den so ogerpon likes to explore them so she pops in to check to see if he and his friends are alright.

Drayton- trying to be serious, is failing misreably. Feels like an ass for all of five minutes before remembering kieran bit him. Then he's just negging the poor kid because honestly? He's pretty facinated. He'd be the one most into the mythology of it all, pokemon turning into humans. He'd also pause at times because he'd give kieran a soda and then would have serious thoughts like "will carbonation kill a grass type?" He will never admit he reached out to Iris to ask about how she dealt with her super nasty Dragonite so he could have a better grasp on how to handle ogerpon. No one admits it but he's actually really good at handling ogerpon when he's not being a complete ass.

1. Why do you like or dislike this character?

I LOVE Georgia. Similar to Burgundy, I love how snarky she is and how much she’s willing to push her rival for a fair fight (Pokémon battle-wise). I think she has a really cool and unique design too and I’m glad she appeared in every Don George tournament alongside a few other episodes!

3. Least favorite canon thing about this character?

Literally the fact that we got so few episodes with her- similar to Cilan and Burgundy, I wish her rivalry with Iris had been fleshed out a lot more. I also wish we’d gotten to see more battles between her and Iris, perhaps her and Burgundy, and others.

14. Assign a fashion aesthetic to this character.

Oh gosh…maybe like…a mix of grunge, cyberpunk, Y2K but also like soft indie? Georgia’s canon outfit is pretty cute in general with the newsboy cap, so I can see her pulling off pretty much anything. I definitely see her being on the sportier side of things though, and not being one for too many frills or feminine touches, which is more Burgundy’s speed.

20. Which other character is the ideal best friend for this character, the amount of screentime they share doesn't matter?

Obviously, Burgundy is the first person that comes to mind, since they’ve had so much screentime together and are often seen making commentary together on the sidelines. Other than Burgundy, I also see her developing a really strong frenemy-ship with Iris (mainly because I headcanon that Georgia will eventually be one of Iris’s Elite 4). Other strong friendships I see include Trip (whom I ship Georgia romantically with, alongside Iris and Burgundy) and the other rivals from the Don George tournaments (Bianca, Stephan, etc.) In general, I see that group of rivals remaining very close and continuing to enter tournaments and hang out outside of Pokémon-related festivities.

Why should, say, a 19-year-old enrolled in a 4-year liberal arts college read Jane Austen? Students don't listen to us, university professors, to learn the answer. The writing on the wall is everywhere: the budget for the humanities is slashed in most colleges I know, and departments of English, Philosophy, and History are closing. Small liberal arts colleges are in financial difficulty.

I realized, watching Robin Waldun's video, that I too have lost sight of why great literary novels are worth reading. I once knew it of course, and I read my Hardys and Austens with much pleasure. But over time, they had to make room for more pressing things. If you cannot afford mental space, a certain stretchiness in your day, then out of the window goes our capacity for wonder and discovery (so I argue in my book Wonderstruck).

The problem is, you need to read to fully know it. Reading a lot gets you into a virtuous feedback loop where you want to read more. In the case of The sea, the sea, Murdoch said her book is about the triumph of virtue. You have this quite flawed main character who somehow, like Prospero in The Tempest (which clearly influenced this novel), finds peace with his past and with the people who dwell in his past. He realizes how you come to idealize and freeze in time people you met a long time ago (in particular, his first love Hartley). He abandons magical thinking, at least to some extent.

Charles Arrowby does not suddenly turn into a saint. He remains a silly person. But it is possible, even for him, to become more virtuous. To properly experience this, you need to read the novel. The long-form experience of a novel helps you to travel along in the messed up inner life of Charles and to see the difference between his reality and his imagination. Eventually, you as a reader can begin to question your own discrepancies too: what are people in my life really like? Because Murdoch is kind to her characters, and never stops making Arrowby relatable (even after all his bad decisions), you can become more kind to yourself too.

This payoff is hard to explain. You can say “Literary fiction helps us to grow as persons” but it doesn't quite hit the experiential dimension of going on a journey, with a set of characters, and to actually do the growing. I've found that many people who hardly read any fiction will have nonetheless some book they once read that did change their outlook and that they enjoyed. But somehow, it didn't push them to read more books.
