Stolen from her bed by her family's Neville rivals and carried unwillingly away from all she has ever known, young Catherine suddenly finds herself thrust into a world of war she had only ever heard in stories. As the prized hostage of the powerful Nevilles, lead by the Earl of Warwick and his brothers who despise her family, she must learn to survive in a new way, adapting to circumstances that had not festered even in her worst nightmares. She has a strong will and an even stronger spirit but even the strongest spirit can be broken when the right whip is used. Will Catherine survive as she climbs the thorny vines of this world of white and red? Or will she be crushed underfoot like so many unfortunate souls before her.... ???? ????? ????? ? *???? ???? ?? ??? ???????????? ????????*

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY . 12 June 1492 . Elizabeth Woodvilleโ€™s funeral took place at Windsor . . โ—ผ With the exception of the Queen (Elizabeth of York), who was awaiting the birth of her fourth child, & Cecily of York, her daughters attended the funeral at Windsor Castle: Anne of York (the future wife of Thomas Howard), Catherine of York (the future Countess of Devon) & Bridget of York (a sister at Dartford Priory). . โ—ผ Elizabeth Woodvilleโ€™s will specified a simple ceremony. The surviving accounts of her funeral on 12 June 1492 suggest that at least one source โ€œclearly felt that a queenโ€™s funeral should have been more splendidโ€ & may have objected that โ€œHenry VII had not seen fit to arrange a more queenly funeral for his mother-in-lawโ€, despite the fact that the simplicity was the queen dowagerโ€™s own wish. . โ—ผ Elizabeth was laid to rest in the same chantry as her husband King Edward IV in St Georgeโ€™s Chapel in Windsor Castle. . ๐Ÿ‘‘ Elizabeth was Queen consort of England as the spouse of King Edward IV from 1464 until his death in 1483. . . . #OnThisDayInHistory #ThisDayInHistory #QueenConsort #ElizabethWoodville #Woodville #HouseofYork #Queen #Yorkist #Royalty #History #RoyaltyinArt #England #EnglishMonarchy #BritishMonarchy #d12jun #historyinpictures #royalhistory #OnThisDay #otd #medieval #Medievalperiod #medievaltimes #medievalage #medievalhistory #Englishroyalty #QueenofEngland #thequeen #monarchy #windsorcastle #StGeorgesChapel (at St Georgeโ€™s Chapel, Windsor Castle) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQCJeIODP14/?utm_medium=tumblr

It was not just peasant women in tiny villages that feared the accusation of witchcraft. Being a Queen offered little more protection. One of the first Queens in England to have the accusation flung at them was Dowager Queen Joan of Navaare, who was accused of using 'evil magic' to try to kill her stepson, Henry V, alongside a small handful of accomplices. She was imprisoned in Leeds Castle until her near her death in 1437. Elizabeth Woodville, wife to Edward IV was accused of using magic to make the King fall in love with her and have children with her. This was one of the reasons Richard III used to crown himself King. If the future Edward V and his younger brother were concieved not out of love but of witchcraft, then they must be illegitamte. One of the charges levelled at Anne Boleyn was that she had a sixth finger on her hand, clearly this was the mark of the devil and she was also accused of using black magic to seduce Henry VIII and other men. For more on royal witches, there is a whole book about them! Royal Witches: From Joan of Navarre to Elizabeth Woodvill by Gemma Hollman. For more on early modern witchcraft, check out the โ€˜Witchcraft in Historyโ€™ link in my bio. This is part of my A to Z of early modern witchcraft. I will posting everyday around 6pm to unveil the hidden stories and disturbing tales from this unique period of history. #witchcraft #witch #witchesofinstagram #queens #queenship #royal #medieval #earlymodern #earlymodernenglish #joanofnavarre #elizabethwoodville #anneboleyn #tudors #sorryitslate #henryviii #women #womeninhistory (at England) https://www.instagram.com/p/CColyahHx-W/?igshid=19g9qbfhtp2g0

The House of Plantagenet had ruled England from 1154 until the death of Richard III until the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485. Symbolically, the two roses became advocates for the House of York and Lancaster. These two subsequent Houses are cadet branches of the House of Plantagenet.
Let's start with the White Rose of York. It has been claimed that the Yorkist Rose was White in colour due to Christian Liturgical Symbolism, the colour White was the symbol of light, innocence, purity, joy and glory. Also, the White Rose was supposedly first used by Edmund of Langley, First Duke of York, Fourth surviving son of Edward III. In addition, it is also believed that the White Rose was chosen as a symbol of the Virgin Mary - who in turn was known as the 'Mystical Rose'.
In contrast the Red Rose of Lancaster had a different but similar history to the White Rose of York. The Red Rose was first adopted as a heraldic device by the First Earl of Lancaster; Henry IV of England advocated this as one of his badges - he was the first King of the House of Lancaster. Moreover, it is suggested that the Red Rose of Lancaster comes from King Edward I and his Gold Rose Badge, yet other members of the Royal Family used different abbreviations of this badge.
With this is mind both the White Rose of York and the Red Rose of Lancaster have become symbolic with the so called 'War of The Roses', which is also named the 'Cousin's War'. Adrian Ailes has considered that the House of Lancaster Red Rose 'probably owed its popular usage to Henry VII, who quickly responded to the pre-existing Yorkist White Rose in an age when signs and symbols could speak louder than words.' The idea of this emblems were used as propaganda for generations to come. Henry VII used them to create the Tudor rose when he beat Richard III in the Battle of Bosworth Field and subsequently married Elizabeth of York. Also, William Shakespeare may have indirectly coined the term 'War of the Roses' within his play Henry VI, in a scene where he depicts members of both Houses choosing said colour roses from a garden. Therefore, it can be noticed that modern historians have attached the White and Red Roses to these Houses.
In retrospective, the White Rose of York is now used as an emblem for Yorkshire, and the Red Rose of Lancaster is used as the same. These two Roses are important to the history that has been embedded within our minds. We will never know if the House of York and House of Lancaster used these roses as symbols. They became important after, Henry VII used them together to strengthen his claim. Maybe they were adapted by historians to coin the Term the War of the Roses. Due to the influence that the combined rose has, The Tudor Rose, this two roses became symbols of their retrospective Houses, Yorkshire and Lancashire. They became apart of history, they have a meaning other than just being a flower, they represent England.

On This Day In History . 2 November 1470 . Edward V was born . ๐Ÿ‘‘ Edward was born at Cheyneygates, the medieval house of theย Abbot of Westminster, adjoining Westminster Abbey. His mother, Elizabeth Woodville, had sought sanctuary there from Lancastrians who had deposed his father, the Yorkist King Edward IV, during the course of the Wars of the Roses. . . About Edward; . โ—ผ Edward V was King of England from his father Edward IVโ€™s death on 9 April 1483 until 26 June of the same year. He was never crowned, & his 86-day reign was dominated by the influence of his uncle & Lord Protector, Richard, Duke of Gloucester, who succeeded him as Richard III on 26 June 1483; this was confirmed by the Act entitled Titulus Regius, which denounced any further claims through his fatherโ€™s heirs. . โ—ผ Edward and his younger brother Richard of Shrewsbury, Duke of York, were the Princes in the Tower who disappeared after being sent to heavily guarded royal lodgings in the Tower of London. Responsibility for their deaths was widely attributed to Richard III, but the lack of any solid evidence & conflicting contemporary accounts suggest four other primary suspects. . โ—ผ Along with Edward VIII, and the disputed Matilda & Jane, Edward V is one of four English monarchs since the Norman Conquest never to have been crowned. As it is generally assumed that he died close to the time of his disappearance, he is the shortest-lived male monarch in English history, his great-nephew, who was crowned Edward VI, died in his sixteenth year. . .
