If there is one thing I'm learning right now it's that math academia is a small world.

#first there were several people in the summer school who I had about one degree of seperation with #now I got an email from my uni sent out to all new phd students #so i took a look at the other names out of curiousity and had an 'oh shit i know you!' moment #which. i feel kind of weird about tbh despite the fact that she's perfectly cool and has never been anything but nice to me #there is just the inherent awkwardness of constantly running into someone you kinda know but not that well #if i had my way every time i entered a new unfamiliar environment it would be a complete fresh start with no one allowed #to recognise me from anywhere #*certainly* not from the undergrad years i'd rather pretend never happened #this feels. just a tiny bit claustrophobic?#but hey maybe it'll be great and we'll actually be friends this time around instead of vaguely in each others orbits #academiaposting

hanging up my mechanical dragon thing was the best decision I've ever made. now there's this guy just hanging (heh) out above my desk. we're friends :)

#it has a built in stand but i Removed it so i could hang it up. and frankly it wasn't actually that hard to remove #and there was a suspiciously conveniently placed hole that i could hang the dragon buy #*by #as in. it's hanging around the center of gravity. very convenient #anyway yeah they def did that in purpose. giving u the option to hang it or keep it on a stand #which is GREAT because. i did NAWT have the room to put it on a shelf or anything hdjdhjdh #OH RIGHT. the dragon is from ugears btw #they make some great stuff and are very friendly too :)#im still haunted by the time i emailed them asking if i could get a replacement part #but my wording was. not MEAN but after i sent it and looked back at it later i did Not like my wording #(that's what i get for trying to send something tired ig)#but their response was super nice and they mailed me the replacement part for free

Several months late, the landlord finally picked up the dehumidifier from my kitchen

Would've been nice had I been told they were coming though 💀 so I could've cleaned up the grocery bags on the floor that I hadn't put away yet 💀💀💀💀💀

Just booked a new freelance writing contract from a client I thought had ghosted me, God-is-real.gif.

#we were talking last month back and forth over email and then arranged to talk over teams which they cancelled at the last minute #and i didn't hear anything until i sent a follow-up email on Mon and she got back to me within literally three minutes asking to zoom today #which surprised me y'know! given the aforementioned ghosting!#but we vibed well and i've written stuff for similar orgs before and she offered me the contract in the meeting which was delightful #the rate's pretty good for an nfp too #it's a relief honestly i lost two contracts recently #a regular one is replacing their freelance writers with ai and the other was a new one that decided my rate was too high #which is HILARIOUS when i tell you the client was disney merchandising and in hindsight i actually think i lowballed them #i love the theatre i work at but the pay is not great #freelance writing is definitely getting harder / less stable than it already was though :-/#anyway focusing on the good this is a pretty big contract and has potential to have ongoing work so that's delightful

For someone who's so thoughtful when he speaks, Lewis really does still give some absolutely terrible quotes when he's talking to journalists...

#I do find it especially jarring considering how much shit George gets for much less at times...#And I don't feel like it's a conversation we can ever have on here because of the nuance #But actually a lot of lewis' quotes - this year especially - have been incredibly... inflammatory #And I understand that even the most thoughtful people aren't immune to speaking rashly #But some of them are still a choice #I don't think 'George's win was great but its not a win on pace like mine was' is really a quote you needed to give... even if it's true #Which honestly... I don't think he's entirely correct either #Idk I just feel like we moved on from certain elements of email gate too quickly #And this will probably just lead to me getting accused of shit by people I thought were friends again #But as much as I might read some things George says and think... oh god you're going to get flamed #I read a lot of Lewis quotes too where my reaction is... oh god why have you said that?#Idk why I find it easier to write in the tags these days? #company #company musical #stephen sondheim #please please let me have the chance to work on that show someday #even if only so I can sit and hear that song from backstage #it’s one of my favorite musicals but if I’m choosing to listen to it it means I’m very confused or stressed in my (lack of) romantic life #in this case I’ve gone on two dates with a really really great guy but am unsure how to move forward #and it’s like deciding to date him opened my eyes to other possibilities and I’m like Hope what is happening #including a new guy who I’ve only JUST met like barely 2 weeks ago but in a few ways he’s like perfect on paper #including the fact he works in the same field as my dad and has actually emailed him in the past #and at the bar we and a bunch of other people were at he took the time to rave about my dad to everyone at our table #and explain how much he admires him from the few email interactions and his general knowledge of what my dad does #and I’m like ok ok major green flags #and yesterday was a hard day for him and I was witnessing it throughout our performance #and I was just finding myself feeling really really concerned and wanting to make him better #and now I’m listening to company and I’m like Hope. what. is. happening.

Man, knowing that I'm less than two weeks from my last final is really shaking me because I have so many things I said I'd do after I graduate and they're very close now!!!

One of them is going to be leaving all the discord servers I don't talk in and also pruning following / friends lists like hell and back. This will allow me to finally come off invisible on discord, and it'll be nice to have discord statuses available to me again ;~;
