Bad News (Terry McGinnis)
Tumblr media
“Terry McGinnis is bad news, you don’t want to mess with him.” was the first thing you heard about him.
“He’s a bad boyfriend. Skips dates, flakes on plans, always has weird bruises is and really tired. None of his partners have ever caught him cheating, but he definitely does.” Was the next several things, all said in a hushed whisper as you were ushered past the black-haired boy in question.
He certainly didn’t… look like bad news. You’d dated guys who were bad news before, and very few of them had looked like Terry. Acted like him, either.
He was nice. He had helped you with your homework when you cried at the study tables in the library, smoothing a soothing hand over your shoulder blades almost unconsciously as he walked you through your chemistry exam study guide. He’d given you some gum, a smile, and a pat on the back before he promptly fell asleep on the table in the back corner of the library, snoring softly.
You’d slid your number into his hand when you left, and that was it for a while. He didn’t text. You saw each other in passing, and he’d smiled and you’d smiled, but nothing more.
Until you’d gotten the call.
“Hey.” He breathed into the speaker, his voice sounding oddly pained. “I’m sorry to call at this hour, but, uh, this… this isn’t really something I can call my mom for.”
He’d given you the address of an abandoned warehouse, begged you not to be freaked out when you got there, and hung up.
You went.
You didn’t really know why you went, for all you knew it was a really elaborate booty call or kidnapping scheme, but ten minutes later you parked next to the warehouse and slipped inside.
There, leaned up against a wall, bleeding and bruised, was Terry.
“You’re- you’re studying to be an EMT, right?” He asked with a pained smile that was supposed to be charming, gesturing to his wounds. “I figured you’d appreciate some hands-on experience.”
“What the hell?” You’d breathed, giving him a shocked look as you rushed to examine his wounds. “Terry, why didn’t you call the police?”
“Not the sharpest, are you.” Terry grunted in what might have been amusement, hissing as you poked and prodded him to see what was hurting. “Can’t call the police, they’d arrest me.”
“Arrest you?” You’d echoed, and then you took in his outfit. All black, with a red bat on the front. A cowl was clutched in his hand, the ends sharpening into little points. “Oh my god.”
“Yeah, I’m Batman.” Terry chuckled, but it was more at the look of shock on your face. He moved to sit up and then groaned, cringing and covering his wound. “Can you patch me up before I die here, please? Kinda called you for your specific set of skills.”
“You are so stupid.” You chided, but reluctantly dug around in your bag for hydrogen peroxide and bandages.
“And you’re old school, doc.” He breathed, smiling up at you cheekily. “You don’t carry those fancy little kits that heal people up on the spot?”
“They don’t sell them to anyone other than certified medical personnel.” You said, giving him a pointed glare and dousing his wound in hydrogen peroxide. “And I’m not a doctor.”
“Ah-” Terry hissed, tipping his head back and gasping in a little breath. … he was pretty. He was really pretty, and it was a little distracting. The voices of your friends rang out in the back of you head, warning you that he was trouble, but you couldn’t find it in you to listen when he swallowed thickly and turned to look at you, a lopsided smile on his pale face. “Same difference.” He breathed, chuckling.
You looked back at his wound, face flushed and feeling dizzy from the laps your brain was having to do to see Terry- scrawny, ‘bad boy’, Terry- as Batman. It seemed ridiculous, but his muscles were right there underneath your hands, tensing as you bandaged him up. He looked bigger than he did when you saw him in passing, stronger- when you saw him, he was always wearing bigger clothes that nearly dwarfed him, making him look smaller than he was. His hair was damp with sweat that ran down his face and made him look a little bit red, his lips parted as he breathed in air. He was gorgeous.
Suddenly, it made a little more sense why his exes had kept on giving him chances.
You worked quietly and efficiently, only sparing a few looks at your accidental patient before you finished patching him up.
“You should get that checked out at an actual hospital.” You said, helping him to his feet. “And I still don’t understand why you called me. We aren’t… friends.”
Terry shrugged, cupping your face in his hand and grinning a toothy smile at you. “Yeah, well, we definitely are now, doc.” He teased, tapping your nose and pushing away from you to head towards the doors opposite of where you’d parked. “Text me sometime and we can go out and get some drinks. I feel like you’ll be better company when you’re not crying over your study guides.”
He slipped the cowl on over his head and you could very nearly feel his stupid smile, which you already knew was going to get you in more trouble than you had bargained for, as he slipped out the doors and into the Gotham night.
When you walked back out to your car, it had a flat tire, and the window was broken.
… okay, maybe Terry was bad news.

Med school teaches a lot about handling various conditions with all kinds of medication and equipment etc. but so little on what to do when there isn't access to any ( in the middle of the highway in a movie bus/car with a first aid box consisting of a few band-aids. Or in the middle of a forest or a remote lake or beach.)
So what can we do in these situations when people look at you (as a known healthcare professional).
Eg: a case of anaphylaxis and no epi-pen, case of ureteric colic due to a kidney stone. Or something very acute.
There are a couple of ways to look at this. The first is from a first aid sense, the second from a broader medical sense.
The first aid sense:
One of the best things you can do is take a Wilderness First Aid course or get your Wilderness EMT. I know it seems like you'll be learning a lot you already know, but I promise- first aid (and particularly wilderness first aid) is so so different than the kind of medicine you learn in med school. These courses teach you to make decisions in contexts where you're thinking about safety of a group, how and when to go for help, and what basic things you can do about the most common illnesses and injuries in a wilderness or remote setting. Mostly, it gives you permission to improvise in a way that med school doesn't.
The broader medical sense:
This one is tougher to fit in a tumblr post, because I've been studying this my whole life and honestly I know there's still so much to learn. Think of low-resource medicine as an entire medical specialty. You could fill an entire residency program with the information you would need to provide high quality medical care in low-resource environments.
In order to improvise, you need a lot of knowledge about the subject area. You need to know how bodies work, and you need to know how and why they break. Med school is great for this.
You also need to know how to figure out how a body has broken. Hopefully, you got a class or two about physical exam skills. This is a great jumping off point. A lot of these skills were perfected in the 1930s-1970s, so getting a physical exam (AKA physical diagnosis) textbook from this era will give you a much deeper dive into how to figure out how a body has broken without a CT scan or a lab test.
Then you're just going to need to amass knowledge. One of the best ways to do this is to, as you encounter medical problems in your patients, ask yourself: "What did we do before we had the current treatment for [illness or injury]?". Talk to older doctors and ask them what treating __________ was like when they were going through residency. People love to talk about this stuff. If you can find someone who was in residency in the 1960s or 1970s, you're in for a real treat.
I would also highly recommend you find textbooks like Improvised Medicine by Kenneth V Iserson (designed for doctors) or Where There Is No Doctor by David Werner (designed for lay people who need primary care). Also, because a lot of low-resource care is nursing care, I recommend Barron's The Complete Guide to Home Nursing by Diana Hastings. All of these are available on Internet Archive if you want to sample them before you buy.

Pensacola Ct. Hospital,Fl
Marcella came in early to cover someone else’s shift inside the er, and her first thought walking into the department corridor was to check in on her patient from the ambulance. She grasped a separate bag of food that had been made for him when Marcella got up a little early. Her hand gently grasped the bag as she knocked on the door opening it to find an empty room. Marcella scrunched her brows moved out the room to make sure she’d been in the right spot. When she confirmed the room, Marcella wandered to one of the nurses,”hey, room seven where is the patient with the stab wound?”
The older woman turned,”oh that’s my beautiful Marcie girl, what can I help you with sweetheart?” The lady had been a good friend to her mom whenever they’d been around in the hospital, Ms.Evelyn was one of the top nurses on that floor. “Hey Miss Evelyn, I was wondering did you know where room seven went?” Marcella stood walking into the break room setting the bags of food in the fridge. “Oh that handsome young thing, he broke out of the room sometime last night, they tried finding him but that boy apparently left without a trace!”
Marcella nodded her head slowly feeling dejected as she played it off by filling her bottle with water for the shift ahead,”oh okay thanks for letting me know, I was the emt on that case so just thought I’d check and see.” Ms.Evelyn raised a brow but smiled anyways,”alright then beautiful, well you have a good shift I’m on my way out, me and some of the girls are meeting to set up Bible study for the church on Sunday.” With that the older woman left her to her thoughts, she sat down behind the check in desk, having a few moments before she began her mind wandering. He made her promise to come back and she knew he didn’t have money for food so she made him breakfast and brought him his own bottle with more lemonade.
—————-
Jey hid his injuries under his hoodie, he’d remembered another paid match coming up and had planned on going. In his mind he needed to make up the money he’d lost because he didn’t have the confidence that his normal hiding spot would be safe. He grimaced at the pain still not healed from his injuries, but if he didn’t win any fights he didn’t get paid which meant he didn’t eat, or if he’d been lucky enough to have extra to get a hotel room for a day or two. Jey caught up with his cousin who’d been working on bringing some matches up locally.
When he had gotten out of the Marines, they’d promised all sorts of bullshit like housing and money to keep them going, a support system. Yet Jey had slept on everything from park benches, hotels, shit motels, friends couches, etc. It wasn’t until his cousin Roman told him about the underground fight seen and started putting money on him winning that he began to do a bit better than he had been.
Roman dapped him up patting his back to which Jey tried to mask the way he was wincing,”where ya been Uce?” the older man asked folding his arms. Jey rubbed the back of his neck,”I had some paperwork to do at the VA you know benefits, that type of thing.” Roman nodded turning to nod his head in the direction of where the crowd had begun to arrive,”it’ll be an easy night the guy you’re fighting is completely washed out and I’ve had eyes on him, he’s got a week knee, you’ve got this and when you win me this match I’ve got a grand waiting for you.” Jey lowly spoke,”Uce, I was hoping to make more money, I’ve been trying to get a new truck, my old one is in the shop,” he lied and the tall man looked about then nodded guiding the two of them to the back of his private space as he’d owned the fighting space.

Marcella changed into a track suit after her shift and even though she was tired she grabbed the bag of food she’d made and some snacks, drinks from the vending machine at work leaving out in her Hummer she wasn’t sure where she was going. The woman decided to revisit the area near the parking garage they’d gotten him from, stepping out of her vehicle she looked around the spot she first made contact with him looking for any type of clue to what happened to Josh.
Marcella drummed her fingers on her steering wheel,”what are you doing Mars?” she sighed frustratingly as she began to drive into the rougher part of the city. She saw a light pole with a bunch of flyers on it, shrugging the woman wandered closer. It was mostly printed up pictures of missing pets, some adds with take a business strip info from it for car wash services, even some of those scam ppp loan places. Marcella shoved her hands in her pockets ready to give up but her eyes caught a deep blue flyer with the words,’fight for it’ and an address with no other information. She ripped the flyer off the pole taking it to her vehicle when she plugged the information in to her gps and followed it.
Marcella grimaced as the area got worse the closer to the destination, so she made sure her taser was ready in her purse. She pulled up to what looked like an old warehouse where some different street racing cars and other vehicles were. “Girl what the fuck are you doing?!,” she cussed at herself as she parked and locked her car gripping the mace in her pocket. She took a deep breath and prayed for her safety then she rounded the corner and went down some set of steps past some people who were laughing and smoking outside. Her eyes shot wide when the inside of the building opened up into a huge space, it was packed with people and loud music was bumping. In the middle was a boxing ring and the woman felt glued to her spot in the crowd.
She watched as a tall male with tattoos and long hair stood in the middle of the ring with a mic,”as you know the rules are there aren’t any fucking rules,” the crowd laughed jeering on the male.”We got in one side a new face to the scene-,” she zoned out at the man’s words as some random white male came out. Then when he announced the other her eyes shifted to where a figure came from the crowd bouncing from side to side pumping themselves up as the crowd went wild. “Returning to the scene, my Uce,” she missed the ending as her eyes went big, her mouth parting. There he was walking up to the other opponent wearing a hoodie, seemingly to hide his injuries.
Marcella shook her head in disbelief, he shouldn’t be here, there’s no way his stitches healed up that fast. What the fuck was he thinking?! Marcella felt her nerves start to simmer as he was being reckless letting the man get a few too many hits in. Even when he singled the other guys left knee taking him out and the other man came in embracing Josh then leaving him there to stand while the crowd started waiting for the next fight. Marcella waited for him to walk casually out through a separate hallway. She pushed through the crowd, following him in a distant silence. Marcella bounded up some stairs that led to the side entrance she saw when she first pulled in. Noticing the man’s hand was grasping a duffle she shook her head.
Marcella knew this probably went way past privacy regulations at the hospital but she was off the clock and he wasn’t a patient anymore. Marcella jogged a little to close the distance only to roughly grab the man’s broad shoulder,”hey!” She jumped back as he flung himself back in a defensive position expecting opposition. When she saw that he had processed who had touched him she didn’t wait,”what the fuck were you thinking?!” Jey scoffed tsking he muttered something turning around and walking in the direction he’d planned on.
Marcella gaped at this new side of him, catching up she grabbed the duffle from him opening it up to see a few banded stacks of money. She shook her head looking up at him as he angrily snatched it back,”yo what the fuck are you doing?! I didn’t ask you to be here?!” The woman tutted in surprise,”oh my bad Josh, if that’s even your name, I didn’t realize you weren’t the type to keep your word.” She held her hands up defensively backing up,”I brought you breakfast this morning, but I guess you don’t need it anymore, I clearly have no idea who I scraped off the cement back then.” The woman ignored the way he cussed and switched up calling after her, she gritted her teeth when he couldn’t even remember her name instead just yelling after her saying stop.

Chapter 4: Hospital
(Chapter 3: Fights and Fainting)
Aisha locks the apartment door behind them as John helps Ian down the hallway towards the exit. The two of them move at Ian’s pace, which is a slow, halting one so foreign to Ian’s usual purposeful stride. Aisha can tell Ian is trying his hardest to keep it together, but one look at his pale, pinched face tells her all she needs to know: he is not feeling well. John keeps one arm wrapped around Ian’s waist as he guides Ian through the doors and to Aisha’s car.
Aisha snags the keys from John as soon as he unlocks the car. “I’m driving.”
John glances at her, surprise on his face. “You two are closer. Ian probably wants you back here.”
Aisha gives the two of them a wry grin. “Yeah, and you’re the EMT. If he goes down again, I think we’ll all feel a lot better if you’re back there with him.”
John nods, conceding her point. “Ian?”
“Doesn’t matter,” Ian mutters, his words slurring just a bit.
John makes an unhappy face at Aisha, then gently prods Ian into the car. Once everyone is settled, Aisha turns the car on, backs out of their parking spot, and they’re off to the hospital. They ride in silence for a few moments, and then John’s training kicks in. He doubts Ian would admit to being a victim of domestic abuse in this situation — he’d claim that he wasn’t hit so it doesn’t count. John has been on enough domestic violence calls that he knows the line between hitting and hurting is nothing but a mark in the sand.
“Ian? How are you feeling?” John keeps his voice soft, comforting, non-confrontational.
Ian rolls his head to look at John. “Okay, I guess. Dizzy.”
“With the dehydration, I’m not surprised.” John curls his fingers around Ian’s wrist. “Your pulse is still pretty fast, too.” He studies Ian for a moment. “Ian, you know I have to ask. What happened?”
Ian stiffens, a slight enough movement that most people would have missed it. John’s done enough of these interviews to clock the change in body language. Ian side-eyes John, then glances away. There’s guilt in his eyes, guilt that breaks John’s heart. From what he’s heard and seen about the McCartney’s, John is pretty sure that Ian has done nothing worthy of the heartbreak on his face.
“Ian, you can’t keep this inside all the time.” John lightly squeezes Ian’s wrist. “We’ve got your back, Aisha and I.”
Ian studies John. “I told you,” he murmurs. “I … I pissed Abby off.” He shrugs again, glancing out of the window. “She got mad and … told me not to come back … for a few days.” He gives John a wry smile. “It’s my own fault.”
John shakes his head. “If you’re living with Abby and Dennis, they shouldn’t be kicking you out of the house, no matter what you did or didn’t do.” John takes a slow breath. “What was it about coming to see us that made Abby mad?”
“She just … she doesn’t like it when I spend time with anyone other than them.” Ian sighs. “And I … phrased it wrong. I said I wanted a night off, and that … made her mad.” Ian scrubs a hand across his face. “I shouldn’t have said it like that.”
John has something to say about that — namely that Ian’s phraseology is the least of the problems with this situation — but he can tell Ian isn’t in a space to receive that right now. Instead, he opts for another question.
“Where have you been staying, then, for the last few days?”
Ian glances at John, with more fear in his eyes than John expected for such a simple question. He’s not sure why Ian looks so frightened — how hard is it to admit that he was staying in some random hotel in the city? Or even a rental apartment or something like that — no matter how much money Ian had to spend, it’s not like John’s going to judge him for that.
Ian sighs. “I didn’t have my wallet,” he whispers. “I didn’t … I didn’t have my credit card or … anything.” He blinks up at John, begging him to fill in the blanks.
John does. “You … Ian, have you been staying in your car?”
Ian nods, but says nothing. His gaze drops to his hands, and he refuses to glance up, even when John curls a gentle hand around Ian’s arm.
“Ian, what the fuck?!” Aisha half-shouts from the front seat. “What — you’ve been in your  car? We totally could have put you up! No wonder you look like shit. Have you even eaten anything? What—”
“Aisha,” John says, a warning in his tone. “Not right now.”
Aisha glares at him in the rear-view mirror, but quiets with a huff.
John turns back to Ian, who has curled in on himself. It looks like he’s expecting to get chewed out even more. John’s heart breaks for Ian. He’s had a soft spot for Aisha’s friend ever since he met the brown-haired agent with eyes that pull you in and won’t let go. Frankly, John doesn’t like to look to closely at the way he feels about Ian — the man is in a relationship that’s closed at best and … not ethically non-monogamous at worst. John usually stuffs those questions down deep inside, and he does so right now. Ian needs a friend, nothing more — no matter how much John longs to pull him into a slightly-more-than-friends hug.
Instead, John squeezes Ian’s arm. “Hey, it’s okay, Ian. We’re just … we’re just worried about you. That … living in your car … you shouldn’t have had to do that.”
Ian peers over at John from under a shock of hair that has fallen over his eyes. “I didn’t want to be a bother,” he whispers.
John sighs. “Ian, you could never be a bother,” he says, letting a touch of emotion creep into his voice. He clears his throat. “I know Aisha agrees.”
“I do. We are having a conversation later.” She huffs. “But I’ll put that off. We’re here. Let’s go.” Aisha throws the car in park and then turns around to look at Ian. Her face softens upon seeing his expression. “Oh, Ian.” She reaches out and drops a hand onto his knee. “Hey, we’re going to get you feeling better, and then we’ll deal with … all the rest of this.”
Ian gives Aisha a small nod and an even smaller smile. “Okay.”
“Okay.” Aisha squeezes Ian’s knee. “Let’s go.”
John slides out of the back seat, then helps Ian climb out. Ian is decidedly more wobbly than he was getting into the car. He’s clearly dizzy, and clings to John as they inch towards the entrance to the ER.
They eventually make it into the hospital, but get stuck in triage. The emergency department is bustling, and the three of them are shoved into the waiting room. Ian is stable, so they are left with a promise that someone will call them back when a bed clears. Aisha is understandably frustrated, but used the time to sneak off and call Paul. She hopes that if she gets him to come, Ian might open up to Paul. Aisha and Ian are close, but Ian trusts Paul in a way that doesn’t quite match his trust in Aisha. John agrees to stick around to keep watch over Ian.
Ian slumps into a chair, drops his head into his hands, and seems to fall asleep. John keeps a careful eye on him. He is equally frustrated at the slow pace of the hospital but fully understands what goes on behind the scenes. As much as he wants Ian to be seen, he knows there are others who have more pressing needs.
At least, right up until Ian goes limp again, elbows sliding off of his knees and body slumping forward. John manages to catch him and lower him slowly to the floor, all while shouting for help. Aisha comes flying into the waiting room, only to be pushed out of the way as the triage team surrounds Ian. He takes a little longer to come back around this time, earning him an urgent bump up in order of importance. They transfer Ian to a stretcher and move him to a small private room in the emergency department.
Ian is decidedly out of it, reporting one hell of a headache and a lot of dizziness. He just lays back on the stretcher, one arm flung over his eyes, until a nurse finally gets an IV running with fluids and a “migraine cocktail”, as John knows it to be, for the headache. An aide brings Ian some apple juice, explaining that his blood sugar is low and that he needs to bring it up quickly. Ian is poked and prodded into get up and start drinking the juice. He squints irritably at Aisha when she helps him sit up, but dutifully starts sipping through the straw.
Aisha remains at Ian’s side when the doctor comes in to check on Ian.
“Ian is severely dehydrated,” Doctor Amara Patel reports. “His electrolytes are completely out of whack. We’ve got him on a saline drip, and I’ve ordered potassium and magnesium.” Amara glances at Ian’s half-finished apple juice and the packaging from his sandwich that John fetched for him. “His blood sugar is also very low. I see they’ve got you started on some juice and that you finished your sandwich. Good. I want them to bring you some more juice, based on your numbers, and then we’ll see how things are adjusting.” The doctor gives them all a smile. “I want to keep Ian here for a while, just to make sure he stabilizes and that there’s nothing else going on here.”
Amara talks to them for a few moments, answering Aisha’s questions and keeping a watchful eye on Ian. Once Aisha’s concerns are satisfied, the doctor leaves them with a promise to return.
Almost as soon as the doctor leaves, there’s another knock on the door. All three of them glance up and find Paul Moss standing there, concern written on his face.
Ian straightens up. “Paul?”
“Hey, kid.” Paul strides into the room, stopping next to Ian’s bed. “How you feeling?”
Ian gives Paul a wobbly smile. “Been better, honestly.”
Paul nods. “That sounds about right.”
“How … how did you get here?” Ian asks.
“Aisha called me.” Paul says, his tone careful. If Ian feels too pressured to talk, he’ll clam up.
Ian’s face shutters. He glowers at Aisha. “I don’t want to talk about it.” His words are harsh, but his tone wavers in a way that Paul — trained to pick up on these things — easily catches.
Paul turns to Aisha and John, ready to ask them to step out for a bit. Aisha manages to read his intentions.
“Hey, John and I are going to head down to find something to eat. We’ll bring some things back for you two.” Aisha smiles at Ian, gently patting his arm. “Talk to Paul. Please?”
Ian huffs. “I’m fine.”
Aisha raises her eyebrows at Ian. “Talk.” She grabs John’s hand the two of them slip out of the room, leaving Paul and Ian behind.
Ian stares up at Paul, his hazel eyes huge in his pale face. Paul studies Ian for a moment, noting how damn thin the kid is. He looks as if he hasn’t put on weight at all in the five years Paul has known him — he’s thin, pale, and sickly, in a way that Paul is certain he hasn’t always been. Ian used to be a healthy, vibrant young man. Paul had enjoyed watching him flourish in his position at the FBI, enjoyed getting to mentor Ian and later becoming his friend.
Then Ian — perpetually lonely Ian — had finally stopped the casual — failed — dating and started a serious relationship with Abby McCartney and her husband Dennis. Paul watched as Ian’s bright eyes dulled, his ever-present smile dimmed, and his joyful personality suffered. He had tried for a long time to talk to Ian about Abby and Dennis, but Ian always rebuffed him. Paul was determined not to be put off this time.
Paul grabs a chair and pulls it up to the side of Ian’s bed. He sits down and then looks up at Ian. Paul holds Ian’s gaze for a long moment, saying nothing, just letting Ian sit in the silence. Finally, Ian sighs and drops his eyes.
“It’s my fault, I swear,” Ian says quietly. “I pissed Abby off. I know better than to do that. I shouldn’t have argued with her. I should have just … I should have … I … oh, fuck.” Ian drops his face into his hands.
“If Shannon kicked me out of the house, because I wanted to go hang out with you for a night, what would you be telling me?” Paul’s voice is soft, non-confrontational.
Ian jerks his head out of his hands. “She wouldn’t!”
Paul smiles. “No, she wouldn’t. Why is that?”
Ian sighs. “She’s too nice.”
Paul snorts in amusement. “You’re correct, but that’s not what I’m going for here.” Paul leans back and rests his hands on his knees. “Ian, Shannon wouldn’t forbid me from seeing you because it is healthy to have friends and relationships outside of your primary romantic relationship, regardless of if it’s polyamorous or monogamous. You need friends, they support you.”
“I know,” Ian whispers.
“Then why are you acting like Abby throwing you out of the house is a perfectly normal response?” Paul’s tone remains gentle.
“It’s the way I said it. That I needed a break. I shouldn’t have said it like that. It … made it sound like I didn’t want to be around them.” Ian wraps his arms around himself in a way that Paul is familiar with. Ian is not just uncomfortable, he’s holding something back.
“Did you? Want to be around them?”
Ian shakes his head, eyes filling up with tears. “No,” he breathes. He dashes his hands against his eyes angrily. “Shit, I don’t want to cry.”
“It’s okay to need a break from your partners,” Paul says softly. He hesitates before asking the next question. “Why didn’t you want to be around them, Ian?”
Ian takes a shaky breath. He stares down at his knees. “I … I … I’m …” Ian huffs. “All they want from me is sex,” he finally manages, so quiet that Paul has to strain to hear it. Ian glances up at Paul, waiting for judgment.
It’s the answer Paul was expecting, but it hurts to hear it in Ian’s deathly quiet whisper. Paul knows Ian is on what Aisha calls the asexual spectrum — that Ian struggles with engaging in sexual experiences sometimes, prefers to be left out of them, even is repulsed by them sometimes. Why Ian ended up with two people who are fully invested in his sexual performances is beyond Paul — but he suspects it’s in part because Ian is just so hungry for love and affection.
Paul gives Ian a comforting smile. “And sometimes you don’t want to give that to them,” he fills in.
Ian nods. “A lot of the time, lately.” His voice is still near a whisper, as if he’s afraid Abby and Dennis will hear him all the way from their home, miles away.
“Why lately?” Paul asks.
“I’m just so tired. I’ve been working overtime to pay for the mortgage on the house, and that leaves—”
“You mean your rent?” Paul cuts in.
Ian shakes his head. “Nah, I’m covering the mortgage.” He opens his mouth to consider, but must catch the look on Paul’s face. “What?”
“You’re covering the mortgage on their house? The whole mortgage?”
“Yeah.”
“Ian, that’s … that’s ridiculous. What the hell?” Paul leans forward. “Ian, you should not be covering the mortgage on that house. You didn’t buy it. At most you should split it in thirds. At most. You didn’t purchase the house, you’re there renting, basically.”
Ian stares at Paul, wheels clearly turning in his head.
“Ian, is this why you’ve been working overtime lately?” Paul prods.
Ian nods. “Yeah. I … they … wanted … more? For groceries and everything? So I needed to make more hours.”
Paul sighs. “Ian …”
“This isn’t normal, is it?” Ian cuts him off, his voice quiet but tinged with an understanding that gives Paul hope.”
“No, Ian.” Paul shakes his head. “I can’t speak for polyamorous habits, Aisha would be better suited to tell you about those, but I can tell you that no one should be charging you the entire mortgage plus groceries and whatever else they’re making you pay.” Paul leans forward and rests a hand on Ian’s knee. “They’re taking advantage of you Ian.”
Ian stares back at Paul, tears pooling in his eyes again. He shakes his head. “No. No, I … but I … Paul—”
“Ian, a healthy relationship doesn’t kick one partner out because they needed a break from their routine.” Paul squeezes Ian’s knee. “A healthy relationship doesn’t make one partner pay for everything, especially at the expense of that partner’s health. A—”
“My health is fine,” Ian interjects.
Paul raises his eyebrows. “You’re saying that from the ER on a Friday night while an IV replenishes your electrolytes and fluid.” Paul huffs. “Ian, have you gained any weight since you were twenty-three?”
Ian blinks at him. “Abby hates when I start to get fat,” he says matter-of-factly.
“You’re too thin by far, Ian. You should not be at the weight you were when you started at the Academy.” Paul tilts his head. “That’s not healthy.”
“I need to stay thin for work, Paul, you know that.”
Paul raises an eyebrow. “Thin does not equal healthy. You haven’t looked healthy in ages, Ian.” Paul pokes his own midsection. “I’ve got quite a few pounds on you, and I’m pretty sure I could still outrun you, stamina-wise. My body has what it needs to work. I’m not sure yours does.”
Ian shakes his head. “I’m fine, Ian. Abby just prefers that I—”
“Look fucking anorexic?” Paul growls, a bit harsher than he intended.
Ian reels back like he’s been slapped. “I … I do not?” He tries for offended, but misses, ending up sounding uncertain.
“Kid, I could dead-lift you. That’s a problem.”
Silence falls around them as Ian contemplates everything that Paul has said in the past several minutes. After a bit, Paul sighs softly.
“Think about it, Ian. Just … think about what I’ve said.” Paul glances around the room. “Are … are Abby and Dennis coming to get you to take you home?”
Ian shakes his head so quickly that Paul is afraid he’ll get whiplash. “No! No, I don’t … no.”
Paul blinks at Ian. “Oh?”
Ian swallows, glancing away. “I, uh … I’m just …” He sighs. “I feel like shit, Paul. Abby’s just going to march in here yelling at me, and Dennis …” Ian shudders. “I don’t feel like dealing with how clingy Dennis is right now.”
Paul thinks that says enough about Ian’s relationship with the McCartney’s, but he chooses not to push Ian too hard right now. “Alright. Where are you going tonight, then?”
Ian looks utterly confused. “I don’t … know?”
“What was your plan before you fainted on Aisha and John?”
Ian shrugs. “My car, I guess.”
“Ian! You … you could have called me, you know. Before. When Abby kicked you out. Me, or Aisha. We … either of us would have put you up, no fuss.” Paul sighs. “Alright, fine. You get to pick, who do you want to put up with, me and Shannon and the kids, or Aisha and John?” Ian opens his mouth, and Paul interrupts him. “Neither is not an option.”
Ian considers. “I love your kids but … I don’t want them to see me like this.”
Paul nods. “Alright, Aisha and John it is.”
“What — I can’t impose. They might not — want me?”
Paul shakes his head. “Aisha and I talked when she called me. She’s more than willing to take you in for a night at least.” Paul purses his lips. “Listen, Ian. Think about what we talked about, please? Stay with Aisha and John as long as you need. Just … think about it.”
“I will,” Ian says softly. “I promise.”

1st Responders A first responder can be anyone with medical knowledge or training who shows up on a scene of disaster before anyone else. This individual may have attained advanced medical training, although it would also describe someone who has only participated in basic medical courses. The term first responder is a generic term that applies to any one of the above mentioned individuals. Oftentimes these first responders are people who work in the traditional 'first response' categories such as fire, police and medical emergency personnel, but other responders can include people that might not otherwise be considered. These individuals may participate in first response training due to their remote locale, their job or their desire to be prepared. Some of the individuals who fall into non-traditional first responder category include; teachers, flight attendants, security and prison officers, hunting or fishing guides, and the ultimate 'be prepared' individual might be boys and girl scouts who live Training for these individuals is diverse and can consist of relatively simple first aid to complex setting of bones, treating of radiation and burns, as well as other medical emergency responses. Medical training is not the only training these individuals receive; they also receive training in a variety of other areas as well. With the wide array of natural and other disasters (Japan's recent earthquake is a prime example) that take place around the world on a regular basis, the first responder training acquired by these individuals is of utmost importance. A number of organizations provide training but a recent 2002 report on detecting biological weapon use decried the lack of knowledge for first responders regarding biological warfare. The report showed that "diagnosis may be delayed given clinicians unfamiliarity with these diseases" (Borio, et al., 2002). The Borio et al. study determined that clinical manifestations could include body rashes, hemorrhagic diathesis, fevers, sweating and shock. First responders would not necessarily be able to determine that these symptoms, on an individual level, were necessarily derived from a biological attack, but other circumstances may assist in that determination. Those circumstances could include a large number of individuals with very similar symptoms, or an entire area being effected at roughly the same time frame. Basic and advanced medical training are now being offered by a number of organizations. An example would be the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) that provides a wide array of training for firemen and first responders. Training supplied by the NFPA includes certification in a number of areas such as; Certified Fire Protection Specialist, Certified Fire Inspector (I and II) and Certified Fire Plan Examiner. These are advanced courses in how to prepare for fire emergencies; more basic training for first responders might include courses on CPR and emergency first aid. Basic courses can be found through organizations such as the American Red Cross. The Red Cross website states that "Red Cross first aid, CPR (cardio pulmonary resuscitation) and AED (Automatic External Defibrillators) training meets the needs of workplace responders, schools, professional responders and healthcare providers" (American Red Cross, 2011). Knowing how to use an AED or how to provide CPR is one of the first steps in providing first aid to those who may need it on an emergency basis. The NFPA has published standards that first responders should have in order to be effective in regards to emergency medical care. Those standards include "first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, basic life support (first responder or EMT), advanced life support (paramedic), and other medical procedures that occur prior to arrival at a hospital or other medical facility" (NFPA -- 1006, 2008, p. 8). One piece of equipment that seems to be essential to both the first responders on the EMT level and the first responder on a more advanced level is the basic first aid kit. This kit will include such items as gauze, bandages, band aids, medical tape, basic medicines and according to the NFPA " devices for managing infectious exposure, airways, spinal immobilization, fracture immobilization, shock and bleeding control" (p. 8). Some additional equipment used by first responders might include both breathing masks and full-fledged gas masks (depending on the circumstances), ropes, ladders, flashlights, helmets (some sporting lights), anchor points, buoyancy control devices, stretchers (some with wheels, others are handheld) portable radios, food, water, antibiotics, insulin, needles and even more. Much of this equipment will be a matter of not only practicality, but of necessity as well. First responders also need clothing that reflects the nature of the emergency with which they need to address. If the situation which they are addressing is one that includes biological components the clothing they must don is a bit different than that of regular first responder's clothing. First responders clothing can include a number of different items such as; insulated, waterproofed heavy and highly visible jackets, multiple-use bandanas, public safety, police and fire vests, polyurethane overalls, parkas, coats and waterproof jackets. Many of these items are specifically designed for use by the first responder. They include such modifications as oversized radio pockets, microphone tabs, and a clear ID/badge pocket. Many of the clothing items are coated with special coatings to protect the wearer from airborne pathogens, most are waterproof, and the majority are comprised of fire and tear resistant material. Safety glasses and gloves are also common apparel chosen by first responders. First responders who are called to a biological emergency would not only need the above listed equipment but must also have clothing available that would protect him or her from biological effects. Such clothing can consist of items from above that are specially treated, made airtight and include airtight breathing apparatus, helmets and boots. Recently, Rockland Fire Equipment Company wrote that their first provider biological kits include "a chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) ensemble" (Rockland, 2011). That ensemble consists of a complete protective suit, gas mask, boots and gloves. The first responder can purchase a number of suggested items at various locations online including; www.firstrespondersupplies.com that offers all of the above items as well as other first responder equipment such as; cpr valve masks, tongue depressors, backboards, adhesives strips and bandages, watches and timers, scissors, stethoscopes and blood pressure cuffs, binoculars and even a number of equipment bags to carry all the equipment. The truly effective first responder should have a notebook to help track situations, and a list of all potential assistance teams and response units, with their phone numbers. Along with the large number of tools, the first responder should be prepared with clothing and equipment that will be of great help in any type of medical or situational emergency, especially a biological emergency that might call for much more than the mundane automobile accident scene.
