Ghosftflower: The Artbook Cut
Tumblr media
Okay guys, sorry for not doing much lately, holidays aside my laptop died so I am using something else in the meantime, so I had been a tad busy lately.
That being said, the Art Book arrived today! There wasn't a lot of ghostflower sadly, but I wanted to bring something regardless, so let's dig in!
Honestly while I don't consider myself an expert on these types of book, I own a few, and this one is...strange to say the least.
The formatting is off in a few parts, some things that don't make sense with what we are told in the movies, sections of the art book that assume we saw something on the movie that we didn't- I may do a post about it because looking at this book somehow gave me more questions than answers.
But that's a story for another post, let's go!
(Sorry for the quality of the pics, my phone isn't the best and I am not a good photographer myself.)
Tumblr media
This one is right at the end, as part of the decoration between the walls of the book and the pages itself; it shows the entire city, but I focused on them for obvious reasons.
Also because the ending shot of this particular scene is one of my favourites in all the movie and seeing it in it's concert art form means a lot to me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These two were in between pages at the beginning, the text talks more about the general process on the movie than them, so not a lot we can say.
Still lovely, I honestly wish we had more of Gwen and Miles swinging across New York, there is something beautiful and enchanting not only in them moving around in a way only a spider-hero can do, but also almost like a dance between these two.
Tumblr media
Not so much ghostfloweer, but I still liked this pic of them together in Hobie's world.
The book acts as if we were suppose to see this world so one of those crazy things about this art book is seeing the stuff that was in the movie before it was cut.
Honestly the making-of this movie would either be insane or extremely edited because this is nuts.
Tumblr media
Oh ho ho, we are getting to the MEAT.
Okay, I don't read Scripts very often, but the times I had has been interesting, specially since a lot of times it can reveal some small gags that either got cut on the movie, or that things that were in plain sight that you didn't notice. DEFINITELY will be reading the Script for this movie once I get my hands on it.
In this pic, it shows a deleted joke, either this was going to be in the cut of the movie when the book was in development, or it was left there but was already planned on being scrapped.
What I like about this deleted dialogue is that it shows, once again, that Gwen isn't always at the top of her game. As cool as she can be, she is still a teen who hasn't figured everything out.
I honestly find her more endearing trying to stick the landing and failing that just being cool and collected all the time.
Tumblr media
Sorry for the long box of text, wasn't sure where to cut. There are two parts in this I want to highlight.
"They're both trying to impress each other,"
I found this extremely cute because while Miles trying to keep up with her and impress her is obvious (Just like everything else with Miles, as a said, the boy wears his heart in his sleeve and we love him for it,) but to be honest I didn't think Gwen was trying to do the same.
Now I imagine Gwen looking around this New York and trying to see what she could do to impress Miles- I love these earnest dorks.
The awkward gazelle part is also pretty much present in the movie; however I do like the comparison on how Miles himself knows now more than ever what he is capable of, which really shows in the rest on the movie, including in the train chase scene.
(Not really Ghostflower, but I LOVE how Miles never doubt on himself despite what he heard, need to talk about that eventually.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
More art of this beautiful scene, which was sparkled around these notes.
Tumblr media
There is not much I want to analyze here as much as to, emphasize it?
Analyzing this movie so much and so often has really gotten to appreciate it to a whole new level, even if during said process I was able to see more of the mistakes and issues underneath.
This scene is really this and more, and what is astonishing is that is not that they are capturing the essence of the scene in some words, but rather come with the concept and create said scene, which is a lot more complicated.
And yet they pulled it off beautifully.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really liked to highlight this part because 1) I and everyone else may need to start paying close attention to lighting because wow that detail is extremely cool, and 2) It really highlights a whole new layer to this scene.
They are getting close, both physically and emotionally, yet all the things they hide, how they hide themselves in a way, gets in the way of what they truly want. Is amazing because is a struggle that in the details is very much Spiderman, but below it is so human. Which honestly, part of the reason Spiderman as a whole as become so beloved over the years.
(Side note: Stan Lee decided to make Peter Parker in a era where superheroes were adults who basically could do anything, so coming with a teen who would also had teen issues was something that got people calling Stan nuts. Crazy how things how it worked out I'm right?)
Tumblr media
Different stages development of this scene because of course I needed to include this, even if i can't say much of it really.
Tumblr media
Not much to say here, except that this brief goes beautifully with the next excerpt of the book that I enjoyed.
Tumblr media
"At that moment, anything is possible for the two of them." Isn't all of this phrased so beautifully?
While not telling us anything new, I want to relish in this little bits that just makes the scene feel so much whole as you read this.
How both Gwen and Miles don't want this to end, to keep the warmth between them going, to just linger because neither of them want to let the other one go. Frozen in place unable to move forwards for thall the unsaid things, yet refusing to move back.
They are lovely.
And that's all I have for them sadly! This book was extremely odd, it was very much lacking a lot of Miles and Gwen (Which kind of tracks, art books go mostly about design and their design's haven't change much,) but the fact that most of this information was at the end, alongside other things, makes me curious about what the heck went down while making this.
Or other stuff because is not the first time we see the remnants of the other versions of this movie peaking by.

quick thoughts:
“All the pieces are in place” like chess pieces (..rook..) on a board..
“Welcome back to Thedas”. I read this and I think about the “This is Thedas. Enjoy it while it lasts” line
it's gonna be soo neat to see the creative and dev ideas flow from concept to complete design in the artbook :)
“Rook isn't afraid of a fight, no matter the odds” lets gooOOO
it's interesting how the original tagline of the game was The Dread Wolf Rises and now all the language is about Rook rising. parallels, parallels. what if they also call Rook The Dread Wolf when this is over and Rook was phone all along
"Unite the Veilguard" has been mentioned a few times now, I wonder to what extent this comprises storybeats in the game? first we'll need to recruit everyone (form Voltron) and then maybe it's kinda ME2 Loyalty Mission-style where to truly unite the team you need to develop a relationship with/win the loyalty of (or something like that ykwim?) each member of the Veilguard in order to save the day
"learn about the world you defend" 🥺..
"This art depicts the faces of your closest allies, the ones who'll stand beside you against impossible odds." 🥺🥺🥺...

Aaravos' (possible) escape plan;
I think Aaravos has already set up everything he needs to escape in S6.
We know that portals work to remove things from the prison, as that's how Lil Bug Pal got out. Aaravos just needs to be able to create a bigger portal. He already has a portal target in his bloodbond with Viren and/or Sparklepuff.
Aaravos broke the mirror so he could not be spied on, but most likely another reason is he's prepping his exit point. Due to its need to connect to the sister mirror, this mirror is the weakest point of the imprisonment enchantment. Thus, the best spot to create a portal large enough for himself to fit through.
Claudia not only didn't know the prison wasn't a building/structure, she also had no means prepared of getting Aaravos out of the enchanted pearl. (She probably had a dozen spells prepped to get him out a building, but not the space warping pearl). She wasn't releasing Aaravos that day, regardless of whether the dragang turned up or not. However, Aaravos was already moving on with his plans as soon as Claudia was engaged on her mission - implying that regardless of how this event played out, Aaravos' escape is ensured at this point. This indicated that all Aaravos needed Claudia to do to ensure his escape was act as a plausible threat that others are reacting to, if she claimed the prison, that's a bonus, not a necessity.
The dragang should not have moved the pearl - this has weakened the imprisonment enchantment because, A) The pearl is Ocean based and they're moving it away from its energy source. B) Going off Ripples short story (also that the Startouch statues of Aaravos and the Merciful One were built after the creation of the Sea of the Castout) the center of the Sea of the Castout has significance to Aaravos - it represents one of the lowest points of his life. So, it's not a coincidence that the pearl was place there, and that location is part of the imprisoning enchantment.
Skipping from the dragang and adding the Sunfire plot to the mix. Going by the purple mark where Pharos was bitten by Bug Pal when Aaravos possessed him, Pharos is still subjectable to Aaravos' influence. I'm also willing to bet that Pharos is one of those rare Sunfire elves that possess the healing Light-mode form. (His name is based off the lighthouse of Alexandria and in the artbook it says he has a direct connection to the Sun Primal which helps him channel the incalculable power of the Sunforge). Thus, it would seem sensible for fire mage Karim to have light healer Pharos perform the healing of Sol Regem, where Aaravos has a chance to subtly apply his influence.
We know from Tales of Xadia: Corrupted Core, that magical fire has a purification/repulsion effect on the Sun Orb's corruption - with Sun dragon flame being a good counter. (I wonder if Orta will be mentioned in the show). Therefore, Karim begging a healed Sol Regem to try and purify the Sun Orb using the most powerful dragon flame in Xadia seems likely.
Only, due to Aaravos' influence, this purification won't exactly go to plan - at the least, a massive burst of dark magic will happen (similar to what you're trying to stop in the Corrupted Core campaign, but not so apocalyptic). This burst of dark magic will give Aaravos all the external power he requires to create a portal powerful and large enough to escape.
The dragang won't even realise Aaravos is out. This gives him time to make moves before his escape is discovered.
(While I like the idea of Rayla's dilemma over possessed Callum, and there's enough hints that it's bound to happen, I think it will happen later in season 6 over something other than Aaravos' escape).

sword of frost concept art
think of this post as kinda a little artbook for the fic! sword of frost underwent a ton of revisions like i keep saying so i wasnt entirely sure where to take it at first. not to mention writing is v hard for me so my preferred method of brainstorming was drawing! without further ado. writer’s commentary and an artbook :)
to begin with: originally the fic was supposed to be about void dream instead of the snow queen! the idea being that dante was put to sleep by void dream and faust manifested her personal ego to save him- but i ended up going with snow queen bc i saw some sick art on twitter of someone’s employee saving another from snow queen (i wish i had the link bc it was rlly cool, and i’d like to credit them in some way) and i decided that might be a little easier to write for, surprisingly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
up next we have the art for chapter 1! there wasn’t a lot of it but just the stuff i wanted to do with it. i wanted to make this a bigger piece but having to like. paint the prisms pissed me off so i decided against it lmao. the reason for dante wandering into the containment in the first place was originally supposed to be that an employee’s lamp weapon enchanted him from afar and he kept chasing the light until he came upon the snow queen, but i realized he could also. just walk in there on his own lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the actual csp file containing the layout of the facility + the groups i split everyone into was unfortunately lost in a computer moment so. its just the main group here! i chose everyone based on who i wanted to write and interpret- nothing against the other sinners, i had just been itching to write these ones in particular.
Tumblr media
The Fight. i rlly like how i did this one still! writing this scene was also super fun bc i got to use my imagination and mimic how the movements would go :)
but now here’s the wildin part: chapter 2 was supposed to be very different! originally the idea was that dante woke up fine, but changed. kinda like how in the original tale of the snow queen kai became jaded and hated everything he saw, bc the mirror was in his eyes and the snow queen was the only thing he found beautiful- dante was supposed to become competent and uncaring, but hollow inside. the little shard of ice inside his heart wasn’t fully gone, and a kiss could undo it! i found myself struggling with how to pull that off in a satisfying way so i opted for something cooler instead, bc i wanted to make the fic less predictable and maybe more memorable.
there was supposed to be a scene in dante’s office, so i wanted to imagine what it would look like! plus a brief sketch of an ego based on the roses
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
dante was supposed to unbutton his shirt a little and reveal the ice shard still lodged in there (bc the Tension yknow?) and ryoshu and faust talking abt how dante’s clearly changed.
Tumblr media
cool art of the shard from when i wanted to practice single color shading that i liked quite a lot!!
Tumblr media
yoink! the plan was always for a kiss to thaw the ice but i wanted to do something cool and dramatic for art that night i think.
now abt this point i realized i wanted to do something different, so i went back to an EGO dante thing i made for a server request! i absolutely loved how i did this one, so it ended up being the basis for his corroded form in chapter 2.
Tumblr media
as for the final bits of concept art, it was mostly from when i decided to change chapter 2- just stuff to plan the actual concept and get it down before i started writing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i ended up not liking the second “redesign” of the corroded form as much, so i went with the one i drew before. and finally. the art i posted of snow queen dante not long before i finished the fic proper!
Tumblr media
so that was sword of frost! v interesting to write but certainly will not be my last limbus fic lmao. i hope to get more things done before the game drops!

She draws inspiration from European folklore, mythology, fairy tales, ghost stories, and anything from tombstones, Victorian photography, and popular movies to music. In Faeries of the Faultlines Iris is your guide to the Faultlines, a world of fantastical creatures from beyond the veil.
“Iris Compiet is the rarest of artist: That who invokes a complete and cohesive reality with every image she creates. Beautiful, powerful, and contemplative all at once.” – Guillermo Del Toro
“Iris’s beautiful and richly rendered watercolours lift the veil between our reality and the secret world of the fey, offering a glimpse into the fantastical realm inhabited by deftly drawn denizens of moss-laden forests, dank marshes, and secluded glades. This is your portal to the fairy kingdom.” – Tony DiTerlizzi, Co-creator & illustrator of The Spiderwick Chronicles
“The two touchstones of fantasy are voice and vision … I have known Iris for many years. I have watched her find her voice. I am enchanted by her vision.” – John Howe

So I forced my friend who previously beat this game to play it for me instead. Thanks Tonio.
I always played as Helen first to which the fish was horrible to fight. Ironically to learn how different two characters bosses are. The game is also surprisingly short with very little story bits or maybe that's just from coming off of KH3 not too long ago.
The gameplay is rough, in game graphics are a weird mix and the music is god tier. The funniest thing is that gets to me about the graphics is Helen looks horrible in the in game engine but will looks sort of better? If he were supposed to look like a Japanese boy it'd be fine but it's definitely likely he was supposed to be white. However the CG modelers rendered him with defining Japanese features in his cheeks and mouth that I couldn't get over, I jokingly kept calling him Kohei and his dad Yusuke. I promise this is mostly out of adoration for how artists will reference what they are familiar with which even on a professional level results in a blonde haired blue eyed Japanese boy.
The character designs also distinctly bring me back to the era where everyone was trying to be Square Enix. Sega had already been doing particularly well rendered CG scenes but the over designing of Helen especially hits home how games like Sonic 06, Twilight Princess and so on probably took on these traits to catch up with the popularity of final fantasy and Kingdom Hearts to some extent. Helen's playthrough unlocks the artbook and I'm a little sad I'm missing some pieces as the art is fun to look at in all its crunchy glory.
I didn't grow up with the original Nights but the second game definitely came out when I was Will and Helens age which is funny to say since I always perceived myself older than characters like them. Now that I'm an adult I definitely look to the very gender Nights who's playful and essentially a disappointment to their parents in more honor. My first experience with this series was the lovingly rendered key art plastered on Nintendo Power which was possibly also my first one. I remember being enchanted by the reflection in night's eyes. All the more funny to see how old the graphics feel even for the Wii era in comparison to that cover art. But I loved every moment of Nights being almost a fun loving big sibling and annoyed at the idea they should play their role for wiseman.
That being said and it could be because we played Will second, there is like, an air of sexism with Will and Helen. I read up that Nights had some intent for the original kids to represent the masculine womanhood and the feminine manhood and while the clothing they wear or the interests they have represented in their worlds being so gendered isn't as much my issue, the narrative value is. Helen gets the short end being that she is made bad for doubting Nights like Will did but where Will overheard Nights was a nightmaren and was comforted by the owl, Helen hears this from Reala who also paints Nights as on the nightmaren side. It felt a little off equating these two experiences as the same. Nights also only fights Reala in Will's dreams. And while they gave a recent reason for Helen struggling in Will's more straight forward dungeon, there was an ick that Helen was always the one to fall in gameplay to be saved by Will. Like I said I was the one actually playing either so my experience in that is a little limited but Tonio did point out that Will did things on his own in Bellbridge that Helen needed Will's help for. It seems to suggest Helen can't stand on her own and that just sucks.
Considering the in spiritual successor, Balan Wonder world, gave it's female lead no active factor like previous protags (a sport or physical hobby) in a game about theatrical performance, it seems to be a worsening issue. A full tangent on that but if you give the male lead the role of a dancer then why not make the girl a singer???? The other half of theatrical performance????? So weird.
