Jack resists the urge to wipe it off, but it’s a near thing. He played twenty-three minutes tonight, scored twice, took four pills; even so, this guy looks about twice as sweaty as he is.

His eyes stick on the mismatched stitches in his jacket collar for so long that the idiot asks him the question again. He can’t remember what he says in response, but it’s either good enough or mean enough to get the guy to leave. If he were with it, he’d thank his parents for the years of media training to bail him out, or possibly for nothing at all.

The thing is, he’s never been held to anything less than perfection. It seems unfair that someone was allowed to enter the dressing room with scuffed shoes, after all he gave.

I kind of don’t know how I feel about Jack and Bitty being endgame? That’s my hot take. Like, idk if I want Jack or Bitty ending up with anyone else, but idk if I want them ending up with each other either???? Idk. Maybe it’s got something to do with Bitty’s inexperience in the dating scene.

you are right and you should be saying it.

let me preface this by saying: i GET what people see in zimbits. from the angle of the wholesome ending, sure, absolutely. let them be cute together if it sparks joy for you.

howEVER, i personally am a big fan of jack's angsty side. it's what drew me to the comic (it's even what made me want to see zimbits initially), and i am jack zimmermann's biggest fan for the sole reason that he is a mess of a person. the jack that intrigued me would be a HORRIBLE first boyfriend for bitty. because you are right, bitty's inexperience is a huge factor in this.

i read jack as being trapped in this perpetual cycle of isolation and over-attachment. he had his thing with kent, then isolated himself for many years, then came out of his shell at samwell and immediately grafted himself onto bitty's hip. at the same time, he also demands bitty to keep their relationship secret. bitty, who just came out to his teammates 1.5 years ago, comes from a conservative homophobic environment and has, as far as we're told in the comic, not had any great dating experiences while at samwell (which could be its own entire post, stay tuned ig)

as the biggest jack zimmermann fan under the sun, i am convinced that bitty -- yes bitty -- deserves better. i used to run a queer youth group in my area and there's a lot of young queer folks out there who come from conservative backgrounds and take YEARS to unlearn all the internalized bullshit, find out who they even are, and only then are really able to properly integrate themselves into their queer community. bitty, from what we see in the comics, never really goes through any of this process.

so getting together with the first closet case he can find (after having that guy yell at him for a year, then living for a year in fear of crushing on a straight guy) just kind of makes me feel bad for him. if we're taking what the comic gives us at face value, i don't think they're that good for each other.

i would LOVE to have seen the process of them figuring it out, then i probably would've been more on board with the ship, but the comic was never going to have the means to deal with all of this, so it just falls flat for me. personally. i see what the comic was getting at, it just didn't do it for me. it doesn't scoop me up, as we say in german. ("holt mich nicht ab")

as far as this being a hot take. *looks at my crowd of jack/kent mutuals* hmmmm, 7/10?

creation myth

as a birthday present from me to y'all, i'm so excited to finally be able to share something i've been working on for the last month and a half: an aces!jack AU coauthored by the wickedly talented @ohyoufool!!! (24k, jackparse, endgame zimbits, jack/therapy. tw for many, many things. please read the ao3 tags carefully)

It goes like this.

Awake, alone, Jack Zimmermann finds himself in the backseat of his pickup truck. The sun slivers up over the edge of the Mojave, edging sand into shimmer, bones into dust. 

His dreams are always different: cold linoleum, marble tiles, grief he can’t grasp in both hands. Eyes, blue and green and brown. A cathedral of sadness. The end of the world on an altar of gold.

For someone who’s supposed to have it all, he comes up lacking a lot these days.

He stretches, takes inventory. An empty six-pack in the passenger seat. A sore throat, worse than yesterday. A bottle of Klonopin that jams the brake pedal when Jack climbs over the center console to try to start the truck. He scrabbles for it with one hand, catches sight of the clock on the dashboard: 6:07.

Jack curses, hurls the empty bottle out the window, and peels onto the 15 in time to make it for morning skate.

OK WHAT IF bitty takes a couple years to work and save money before starting college

in this scenario the frogs would actually be a year above bitty and !!!! im so excited by that! how would that dynamic be!! at this point i think bitty would have gained a lot of confidence compared to if he started college at 18, but if he was in madison for 2 years then its not as much growth as 2 years at samwell…

i want dex and bitty to Bond on an even deeper level i think that friendship could have SUCH an interesting story. like they are both so FIERY and we dont rly get to see them interact one on one in the comic!! they would probably date and be chaos boyfriends before totally blowing up the relationship and realising they work better as friends and then would absolutely be Those Gays. That One Ex-Couple who remain connected at the hip. you know the type we’re all friends with a gay ex-couple who are just Like That. their in-jokes have in-jokes and they wingman each other but then sometimes drunkenly make out with each other and its all very messy and intimidating. (nursey has a hell of a time trying to date dex with All That going on and is frankly relieved when bitty starts mooning over jack and stops acting fake flirty with dex)

and u know chowder would absolutely take bitty under his wing in the way bitty did with the frogs in the original timeline! chowder definitely arrived at samwell with a lot of enthusiasm and desire to fit in and be liked and i think would see the same in bitty when he arrived a year later. they would become Best Friends for sure. (also chowder would be captain. fight me)

i think bitty and nursey wouldn’t really know how to be friends at first like they wouldn’t dislike each other they just wouldn’t really click? (especially whilst dex and bitty are together and then not-together-but-still-intimidating as described above. because nursey has been holding a flame for dex since year 1) but then one time nursey shares a joint with bitty and they start talking about their experiences being queer, and bitty confesses his complicated feelings about dex and how he knows they arent good together romantically but they sometimes cling on to each other despite themselves because of insecurities… and nursey confesses he has a crush on dex….. and bitty confesses that dex has a crush on nursey!! and after that feel a lot more at ease with each other :))

lardo + ransom + holster would be in their final year when bitty is in first year in this timeline! i think their relationships would all be kind of the same just wouldn’t get as much time to develop

howEVER. l+r+h would talk about their friends shitty and jack a LOT. and would host watch parties at the haus for falconers games. but bitty is oblivious and doesn’t make the connection for WEEKS. UNTIL!!! jack and shitty come to watch an smh home game and then hang out after and bitty’s jaw hits the floor when he finally realises that “our friend jack” is jack ZIMMERMANN. and bitty has to go hide for a while cos he feels so stupid about it (rsd is a bitch) — but then… :) jack runs into him somehow idk details whatever and :)) starts talking to him about the game!! and hes all “that was a really good game, bittle” and “nice assist in the second” and “you’re pretty quick out there eh?” and “you uh, you have soft hands” and also oh dear lord jack is so hot up close and his voice is so deep and gentle and that accent could read bedtime stories bitty is bright red and just about ready to die from the combined embarrassment and ego boost

and then obviously jack becomes really invested in bitty’s playing. which is totally normal. its his old team. its totally normal, right? bittle plays good hockey. jack totally watches the other smh players with the same focus as he watches bitty. totally normal

and of course jack and bitty happen to be in the same smh group chat. so its totally normal when jack texts bitty to congratulate him after a game. his phone number was right there! and the way his stomach flips when bitty texts back is totally! normal! and its so normal when they start texting regularly and its like so not a big deal when jack starts to visit the haus regularly and its all completely normal and fine!

and when the falconers win the cup that year and jack invites smh to party with the team and they all wind up back at jacks apartment and jack and bitty end up kissing — well, actually, that’s pretty extraordinary

I was thinking about writing a Check Please soulmate au but couldn’t decide what ship to write it for

Then I had the idea to do it like the Arrowverse one - it’d be smaller since Check Please has less characters than the Arrowverse

Did I send you my hot take that I think Bitty is too young/inexperienced in relationships for what becomes endgame in canon? Cuz I genuinely can’t remember. If I didn’t, my reasoning is similar to that of a concerned(ish) mother, that this seems to be his first actual relationship he’s been in, his first kiss (as far as we know, although we never know what has happened in kegsters past), his first a lot of things. Idk, maybe get your heart broken a little more Bitty, it may make him a little more appreciative this time around with Jack, a little more confident as well, amongst other things.

But yeah, I also wish for Bitty that he could've spent more time just growing into his queerness and also maybe exploring outside of the gender confines. He seems so eager to replicate traditional gender roles even though those are the reason he was bullied and felt a disconnect from his father.

I've spent the past few days thinking a lot about how Check Please is more interested in asking how systems of power change by introducing queerness rather than asking whether those systems are helpful or harmful and shouldn't be dismantled in the first place, and that's why Bitty's happy ending looks like getting married to a rich guy and being popular online and being liked by frat bros and partaking in hazing-

I just, idk. Nowadays when I look back on it, it just feels superficial and empty to me. Surface level. And I wouldn't really expect anything deeper from a webcomic of this caliber, but I was here too in 2014 when it was lauded as so progressive and subversive, and like, I WISH it was, both for Bitty's sake and for young queer readers who deserve to see themselves in characters that don't just replicate the systems they were raised into.

So yeah, married straight out of college is a fascinating direction we ended up going in. Lots to think about.

Okay so I don’t know Taylor Swift songs but I do know Hozier’s entire discography, so here’s my takes for OMGCP ships/characters as songs on Wasteland, Baby! I won’t be doing one for Nina Cried Power, because it honestly feels disrespectful for the meaning of the song and what it represents!

1. Almost (Sweet Music) - Unrequited Holsom and March/April, Holster is so in love with Ransom, but he’s sure that Ransom doesn’t love him. April is so in love with March, but she guesses if she’s happy she can make herself be happy too.

2. Movement - Nurseydex (Dex’s realization), this one has less of a story idea behind it and more of just general vibes. It sounds like Dex is getting swept in Nursey and he has the realization of, “Oh. I want to be moved by him.”

3. No Plan - Zimbits, specifically when Jack realized he loved Bitty at graduation and said, “Fuck it. No plan.” Jack is just such a planner, I feel like the decision to do something reckless like that would make him feel the way this song makes me feel. 

4. Nobody - Charmer, this one may seem weird at first, but I feel like Charmer is just so endgame and wrapped up in each other that when they’re alone they could get so wrapped up in each other, it seems like they think about each other all the time and always want to be together. 

5. To Noise Making (Sing) - March/April, okay so this song is for the lesbians and it also has been. i love the idea of March and April both seeing each other from the POV from the person singing this song. as someone who can do no wrong, as long they’re singing just to them. 

6. As It Was - Whiskey, this song has dark undertones that I feel match Whiskey’s vibes really well. Like not necessarily dark in a “you’re a bad person” way, but more like, “you’re sad and in a dark place and self sabotaging” type of thing. This is pre-Samwell, where Whiskey is moving away and decides to burn all his bridges. 

7. Shrike - Whiskey/Tango, this is after Whiskey goes through his As It Was phase, he’s been at Samwell for a couple of years, he is still going through his internalized homophobia but when he looks at Tango he doesn’t feel ashamed, he feels like he would do anything for him. 

8. Talk - Nurseydex (Nursey’s realization), so I think this is one of Hozier’s most romantic/poetic songs, and I think that matches so well with Nursey. One day he’s writing a poem and he writes the lines in this song, and halfway through he realizes he’s been picturing Dex the whole and it just makes sense. He’s pissed off about it, but it makes sense. 

9. Be - Alicia/Bob, I feel like Bob worships the ground that Alicia walks on, which I feel like what this song is about. Alicia and Bob love each other so much though, so I feel like this could be sung by either of them to each other. The situation this reminds me of the most is every hockey guy in a locker room making a joke like “my old lady hates me and i hate her” and Bob is like, “That’s not normal, go to therapy.” bc marriage makes him so happy :)

10. Dinner & Diatribes - Shardo, it’s about a man who wants to get pegged by an artist. self explanatory.

11. Would That I - Polyfrogs, intimate and heady. Everyone seems to understand that they could each break the others hearts, but none of them ever wanting to do that. This song just makes me picture all of them sitting together after they figured how much they care for each other, and now they’ll never be separated, but is that not terrifying?

12. Sunlight - Bully/Hops, I don’t really know how to explain this one except the vibe is there? The way they would probably get wrapped up in each other and drop the “masks” they might in front of other people to let the other person in. Idk!

13. Wasteland, Baby! - Jack & Shitty circa freshman year, so this song is about love but honestly I think Jack and Shitty are platonically in love with each other. I also think they’d walk into green sludge to make sure the other was safe, all they want to do is protect each other and make each other happy, even if it means being a little self sacrificial or picking fights with seniors as a freshman to get them to fuck off from bullying your friend.

This has to be my top because I’m very proud of finally finishing it this year! Often referenced as “the divorce fic”, this one was a doozy. Years after Samwell, Dex calls Nursey for a divorce lawyer after ending things with his husband. The two become roommates and friends again and finally get the timing right.

Like I said, I wrote a lot of angst this year. This one I cried throughout writing but still inflicted it on others. Nursey and Dex were together, now they’re not, but Dex can’t stop thinking about him, even dating someone new. Don’t want to spoil it but it is definitely not endgame nurseydex.

Ahhhhhhh wow thank you, there are so many Zimbits fics to choose from, and you chose the one I wrote while my OMGCP AO3 account was still a sock I never planned to link to because it was too many kinks pasted together. I’m very flattered. I’m still weirdly pleased with that fic!

To answer you question -- which I’m also very flattered anyone would ask? -- I've got two OMGCP fics that’ll be going up in the next, like, month:

You may have seen me insanely blogging about this AU where everyone’s getting MFAs at Samwell. In theory, ideally, I guess this would be like a loose collaborative series me and @tomatowrites both write in? (If she wants to/has time to?) I’ve very near done with the first fic in this series, like, one to five paragraphs away from being done and passing it on to a beta. It’s a PBJ sex fic set over Labor Day weekend; Bitty thinks he’s getting into one thing (group sex) but he’s actually getting into something else. It doesn’t get that much into the MFA part of things but I hope it does an okay job introducing the general themes around the Parse + Bitty stories in the AU? Lots of ???? because I’m just so excited about this entire thing. Please send me + Tomato asks about MFA stuff, I’m obsessed with and I want everyone else to be, also.

I’m also doing @omgcpheartbreakfest, and that fic is due on August 5 and should be posting ... a week later? Ish? Because it’s a blind fest I ought not divulge too much about it, but it’s an idea I’ve wanted to write out for a while, so I’m looking forward to finishing this over the next week or two.

After those two I’ll probably switch gears to finish up this infamous South Park fic. Further afield, I did start an Ollie/Wicks fic that could be conceptually interesting but a) what is the audience? and b) do I really want to expend energy on digging into the tone and keeping the tone on point? More problematic is that these characters do not have personalities or even biographical information to transform into a story, so it’s tough to know what their relationship would even be like? I guess what I’m saying is I’m not sure if I want to follow through on this. Earlier today, actually, I took a look at it convinced I was going to scrap it -- but I also felt like there was something there that made me almost wistful for whatever conviction I had for this story when I started it. We’ll see where that goes.

Two big fics I have wanted to write in this fandom for a long, long time, like nearly as long as I’ve been in the fandom:

An AU where Jack’s OD is fatal, and a few years into the future his mother has established a foundation in his memory, to which she’s recruited Parse to sit on the board, which requires that he help fund the foundation. The foundation creates a scholarship for a hockey player at Samwell, and Parse is asked to advise the selection process, which results in Bitty being offered the inaugural award. The problem, however, is that Bitty is terrified of checking and if he doesn’t make it on this team, there’s a chance SMH might ultimately reject the gift -- and if this pilot program fails, Jack’s mom is gonna, like, have a breakdown. So Parse decides to intervene to make sure Bitty doesn’t get cut? Long story short, endgame Bitty/Parse, with the basic tension coming from what everyone’s lost if Jack isn’t in their lives: the team dynamic is totally different! Bitty thinks Jack is a selfish monster who ruined the lives of everyone around him, but Parse maintains that Bitty didn’t know him. The Bob/Alicia relationship is almost irreparably frayed and Parse finds himself in the middle of it because they both refuse to let him go! In a lot of ways it’s a story about Jack, although Jack is very dead for all of it. If done properly I would love to get into some of the tough politics around, like, money in US higher ed and some politics around wealth generally.

I have mentioned a few times that I want to write a “normal” not-edgelord Zimbits fic, and that would be an AU where Jack gets a PhD in history instead of going into the NHL -- so it’s basically canon-divergent from the start of Y2, where Jack decides that, for his own mental health, he can’t do professional hockey. The fic is set over the summer of 2017, at which point Jack is preparing to take his exams, write a dissertation prospectus, and start teaching in the fall. He’s at an impasse with his advisor, however, who doesn’t want him to write a social history of hockey because that’s a second book project, not a dissertation. While that’s happening, Bitty’s just graduated college and moved back in with his parents while Jack tries to find them an apartment in Boston -- which he’s having some trouble doing since Bitty doesn’t have a job lined up and Jack’s income is like, a graduate stipend. The conflicts in this story come from circumstances external to the Jack/Bitty relationship, and center around Jack’s doubts about his ability and desire to follow through on his stated goals, especially considering he’s deeply uncompromising. I’ve seen so many arguments that Jack would be so great at grad school or being a professional academic and it’s like, yes, in some ways, he would be; I can see him doing good archival research, or moving through the degree requirements in a PhD program, because he’s goal-oriented and willing to put the work in. But! He’s fucking awkward and so much of this field is just ... networking? Collaborating? Taking advice? Listening? Taking social cues? He had this idea about what kind of dissertation he was going to do, and why is he being told no? Can Jack take “no”? Can he adapt? A random woman has been showing up to his beer league games -- maybe this degree wasn’t the right path after all?

Then, all the way down at the bottom here, it’s like, I have sooo many incomplete Greerverse and lady Jack fics, many of them in the 500-3k range, but some of them in the 15k range, which is like, wow, that’s a lot of unfinished fic! The most profitable of these would be Jack and Bitty taking a 15-year anniversary vacation traveling around Europe for six weeks, which Jack unceremoniously kicks off by announcing a desire to transition--and then saying nothing about it for the duration of the trip while Bitty tries to work out how he feels about this, never mind what Jack even wants.

Aaaand last and probably also least, I’ve got like 15k each of an a/b/o fic I tried to write for Tomato and another 15k of a fic where a career- ending injury leads Jack to reassess his entire relationship with his body and therefore he winds up getting a little drag-curious, and it was fun writing about like, Jack moping around the house on crutches feeling sorry for himself, but also the fic has an OC who’s a big part of the story and I just didn’t feel that guy or care to write about him so I quit! Maybe I should scrap those things, along with the rest of this mpreg fic.

So that’s where I’m at ficwise right now! Who knows a) when the things further down this list would see the light of days, and b) which other crazy ideas will crop up that I have to write in the interim?
