There was a heavy weight on your chest, pressing down on your lungs, like the endless depths of the ocean. You couldn't breathe, you couldn't move, you couldn't speak. All you could do was watch as chaos reigned around you, leaving you helpless and useless as your world fell apart. 

"Darling?" The voice seemed distant and far away, unrecognizable in the midst of your terror. You had let this happen, and now you were cursed to watch the consequences. "Darling, wake up, you're having a nightmare." 

You woke up gasping for air, flailing away from the hand on your shoulder. It had been a dream, nothing more. But you couldn't stop shaking, still desperately dragging in air between sobs. Guilt and fear and an aching, heart-wrenching pain still sat heavy in your mind, seeming to expand with every choked sob. 

You were going to ruin everything and you couldn't save them and everything was going to fall apart. It was your fault, you did this, you hurt everyone. 

"Breathe, love. You're okay. Just try and breathe."

Percy. Here, beside you, always there for you. You couldn't quite slow your breaths, but blinking through tears you looked up at him, focusing on his presence. 

He had clearly just woken up, his hair still ruffled and his glasses on the bedside table. He was leaning towards you, but careful not to touch you yet in case it made anything worse. Half-asleep but so worried about you, he looked so terribly soft. 

"May I give you a hug? Is that alright?" Percy asked gently, offering his arms. His tone was gentle, far removed from his usual sharp wit, it was a careful offer of comfort. 

You nodded and practically threw yourself into his arms, still shaking in his embrace.

"You're safe, darling, I promise," he murmured, holding you tightly. He began gently stroking down your back as he held you, speaking softly and slowly. "You are going to be okay, I've got you. It was just a dream, it can't hurt you here."

Slowly, you began to come down from the fear, tuning into the real world and your senses. Pressed against his chest, you were warm and his arms were steady around you. He smelled faintly of smoke and gunpowder. Surrounded by him like this, it was all you could smell. He was still speaking, all careful reassurance. Otherwise, the room was quiet, it was late. He had been asleep just like everyone else. 

You couldn't help but feel guilty about waking him and you slowly pulled back out of his arms after taking a deep breath. 

"Thank you, I'm sorry, I shouldn't have woken you-" 

"No, you don't need to apologize. I'm glad to help. Gods know you do the same for me." He reached out, setting his hand on your cheek and brushing away some of the tear streaks. You could feel the callouses he had from his guns, and part of you knew his hands better than your own. 

It was such a fond gesture, and you couldn't resist leaning into it, tiredly pressing a kiss to his palm. 

"I love you," he said, "and I would rather wake up to help when you have a nightmare than leave you to deal with it alone." 

"Thank you," you breathed, eyes shut. "I love you too." 

"Come here and lay with me?"

You didn't have to respond, not when your throat still felt tight. You could just fall into him. 

Carefully wrapped in his arms, cradled to his chest like something precious, you were safe. The fading remnants of your dream couldn't reach you when you were with him.

"It's nice to have you so close. I always seem to find myself missing you when you're not in my arms."

"I'd stay here forever if I could," you replied, your voice muffled against his shoulder.

"I might just take you up on that. Think we could convince the rest of Vox Machina to give us the time rather than running into trouble?"

"You run into trouble just as much as anyone else."

"I would never do such a thing. I stay at a reasonable distance so I can shoot but not get hit."

"I'll remember that for next time I have to patch you up."

"I wouldn't have it any other way, darling." 

He was so warm and it was so comfortable to lay on him like this. Even bantering with him, you could feel sleep starting to pull at your thoughts. You were safe, you could drift off in his arms. 

"I love you."

"I love you too."

As someone who has been reviewing late Campaign 1 episodes, namely Elysium, The Fear of Isolation and The Endless Atheneum (but especially that first one), it's very weird to me how the cast and characters are so... idk, willing to indulge the idea the Prime Dieties are puppeteers and self-serving? And after Campaign 2, too, where the Wildmother and Stormlord were both very involved with their faithful.

I'm thinking specifically to a short conversation between Vex, Pike and Sarenrae about reverence (and accidentally almost taking souls oops):

(Also worth noting that, as Dani pointed out, this is the goddess that helped bring Laudna back. Make of that what you will.)

Might it be that a couple of years without much divine faith among the Hells + working on TLOVM, thus focus on the Raven Queen and her complicated role, changed things?

A lot to think about.

I love that Travis went from never wanting to do romance in game, to blushing the brightest shade of red when flirting with his own wife. And now he’s playing a weird horny game of chicken with Ashley, that I’m pretty sure he started.

hermie the unworthy is actually all of the teens’ narrative foil.

he’s a theatre kid in high school that learns his lines during school dances and recites classic spiderman comics and is unapologetically a fucking weirdo in the name of method acting

he’s THE narrative foil because literally no one is so confident, self-assured and utterly uncool as a theatre kid, whereas our teens are all still trying to figure themselves out and how they and their families fit in the world

I think a lot of people who’ve watched campaign one, including myself, forget that Percy is young. like barely 21 young. this is a kid, hardly more than a child, who’s had to grow up way too fast and in horrible, horrible fashion. and seeing Percy– young, maybe seventeen Percy, being tortured by ripley and anders as purely a game, his whole family murdered before his eyes… damn

Wait I have more Vex in TLOVM thoughts, namely, I think people don't like that the finger of death attack was instead targeted at Keyleth because of Vex's intense hatred of Delilah later. The thing is: you don't need that, because I don't think the hatred ever really came from that.

The fact that Delilah killed the family of the man she loves, and nearly killed several of her friends, on its own, enough. It's amplified by the fact that Vex realizes, amidst her attempted sabotage of Vax's relationship with Keyleth, how close she could become like Delilah, ruining everything out of love for a few people and total disdain for everyone else (and, indeed, had Delilah killed Keyleth, Vex's last major action towards Keyleth would have been that sabotage). That's without even taking into consideration that the finger of death was aimed at Vex, and Vex knew this.

I think a hatred of Delilah as a representation of who Vex would become if she did not actively work on forgiveness and compassion makes a much more fulfilling narrative, especially in the context of Vex's arc, than hatred borne of simple vengeance.

I'm enjoying the vox machina cartoon as much as the next full grown man who loves animation. It's very refreshing to see an animation that gleefully indulges in all things that make cartoons wonderful. Colour, action, magic! And it's clear that there is NO Board oversight on the project. They're making the jokes they wanna make how they wanna make it. But its also clearly for adults! Sudden gore and violence, raunchy humour, inside jokes, but all wrapped up in the fantasy veneer. I've been waiting for a cartoon like this for years. I still think this sweet spot of "animations that aren't just endless profanity and low grade humour but also aren't just mindless kid stuff, clearly aimed at an adult audience" can be refined but I think Tlovm is really the first of its kind and I HOPE its success breeds more like it.

I know I’m probably late to the game, but I’ve hopped on the Critical Role train and now I can’t stop obsessing as I catch up on CR3 (because there’s no way I’ll ever make it through the other two campaigns right now) and TLOVM on Amazon is amazing so far. Who is going to bring us some muses from CR? Maybe a member of Vox Machina is calling your name now that they have their own show or maybe there’s a muse you’ve been dying to bring to life from the Mighty Nein? Imagine them in a small town like Echo Springs with no memories of their campaign adventures. The possibilities are endless.
