Helo I would absolutely read your essay on Ianto Jones
The people have asked so the people shall receive - here's my 2000+ word essay on Ianto Jones through episodes 1-4. I have another in progress for episode 6 and the audio Broken, which I have not listened to but I have read several different summaries of it.
Ianto Jones's official role in Torchwood Three is the Archivist. However, he acts as general support, receptionist, butler and crime scene cover up in addition to this role. Prior to the episode Countrycide, he remained in the Hub during field operations, however the sixth episode of the first series saw him in his first on-screen field mission. At 23 when the show begins, he is Torchwood's youngest member, however he is far from its least experienced.
Before joining Torchwood Three (Cardiff), Ianto was employed at Torchwood One, the London branch whose downfall is shown in the Doctor Who episodes Army of Ghosts and Doomsday. He originally worked there as a junior researcher, however he also took on the job of Yvonne Hartman's personal assistant. He spent a short time as a junior field agent before returning to work as Hartman's PA. Whilst working there, he met and fell in love with Lisa Hallett, whom he started dating. This becomes significant after One's fall, upon which Ianto becomes one of 27 Torchwood London employees to survive the events, out of over 800. Having grown up in Cardiff, Ianto returned there and convinced Jack Harkness to hire him at Torchwood Three.
Despite being qualified, Ianto had to ask three times on three separate occasions before Harkness eventually gave him the job. By the time the program begins, Ianto has been at Torchwood Cardiff for three months. For the first three episodes he has very little screen time, appearing last out of any Torchwood Cardiff employee. He is first seen when Gwen, the protagonist, arrives at the Torchwood Hub for the first time. In this scene he is acting as a receptionist for the tourist office that is run as a front to the Hub. He is completely separate from the other employees, isolated even within the 5 person team. Rather than introduce him as the archivist, Jack chooses to say "he cleans up after us and gets us everywhere on time." This introduction paints the picture of him as a butler or lower-level employee, rather than someone with five years of experience within the organisation.
This image of him continues, with him appearing in the second episode to provide the team with food and then assist Jack when a prisoner escapes. Other than this, he remains either off screen or in the background, a lonely figure about whom the audience knows very little. He is never presented as one of the team, nor does any member of the team make an effort to include him. The only times in which he is seen in this episode is when he purposely draws attention to himself, something which he only ever does occasionally. He remains in the shadows, not a character who the audience is meant to focus on. Given the constant action and his rare appearances, it is easy to forget that he is ever there, something reinforced by the bold and full personalities of the other characters.
The third episode highlights his role within Torchwood. During the major action scenes, he is nowhere to be found. When they are desperately failing to find Harris, nobody even thinks to call Ianto and see if there's anything he can do at the Hub. He appears almost as comedic relief at some moments, with the "Splott/Sploe" comment being the most notable. He is seen only when he chooses to be, forgotten once more due to the high stakes, fast moving action and dynamics between the other characters. The only hint towards what sort of relationship he has with any member of the team is the tiny tidbits of flirting exchanged between him and Jack on two occasions. Even this tells us next to nothing about he and Jack's relationship, since one of Jack's most renowned characteristics is his constant flirting with any and all adult characters, including robots.
However, the scene that speaks the loudest about his character's role is the very end of the episode. Having understood the full, terrible potential of the Ghost Machine, Jack has Ianto lock it in the secure archives. This would be a tiny thing, considering the fact that Ianto's domain is the archives, if it weren't for the way that he is told to do it. Jack simply says his name and holds it out in Ianto's general direction. He never looks at him, responding only with a nod when Ianto asks "Secure archives?". He treats him not like an archivist, or a survivor or even an employee, but like a servant, someone he pays to do menial tasks for him. He does not see Ianto as someone who he needs to show respect to, and none of the others question it. The entire team is present, but none of them have any reaction to the way that Ianto is treated. Not a single one of them sees a problem with the fact that he is being treated as lesser, or being disrespected. For Gwen, this is understandable since she is dealing with the grief and guilt of being part of a man's death, however Tosh and Owen just act as if this is normal, which leads to the assumption that this is a regular occurrence. Different versions of that interaction must have occurred multiple times over the short period that Ianto had worked there.
Which brings us to Cyberwoman. The very first scene mirrors the end of Ghost Machine - Jack handing something to Ianto without acknowledging him, before immediately turning his attention to someone else. Ianto is left behind whilst everyone else goes out, he is always the outsider, the other. At this point, it is revealed that he has been hiding the remnants of Lisa in his basement, half converted and in pain. Ianto had no way of knowing that Lisa was not still herself, she spoke and acted like any human would if they were injured and dying. Somehow, Ianto was able to smuggle a full conversion unit/life support system and Lisa herself into the Hub without anyone noticing. Whilst he undoubtedly took many precautions to avoid being discovered, the fact remains that he could not have done so if any member of Torchwood Three had paid him any attention. All of them were perceptive, intelligent and presumably able to recognise a cyber conversion unit, this presumption coming from the fact that Owen recognised it, who is neither a tech expert nor the longest serving agent. The only one who wouldn't have been able to identify what it was was Gwen, who wasn't part of Torchwood when Ianto brought Lisa into the Hub. Once more, Ianto was ignored by the rest of Torchwood, fading into the background immediately after the worst event of his life, surrounded by the only people he knew who knew the truth of the "battle".
Later in the episode, Ianto still remains loyal to "Lisa", even though the Cyberwoman no longer has any part of her left. This is what the team, specifically Jack, blames him most for, telling him to "stand as part of the team". However, prior to this, no effort has been seen to involve Ianto as a member of the team, allowing him to become invisible. He was constantly undervalued; they used him as a dogsbody. Lisa had seen him, relied on him and loved him. If they had been thinking logically instead of acting emotionally, they would have realised that there was no reason for Ianto to choose to stand with them and every psychologically based reason for him to try and save Lisa. He lost everyone who could have provided him with support after Canary Wharf at Canary Wharf. Due to the secretive nature of Torchwood, Ianto could not legally tell anyone about the horrors that he experienced there; and the only people who knew shut him out completely. The only person he had left was dying and in agony; and she leaned on him so heavily that he could not lean on her.
Another point to consider is that the way Jack acts around Ianto is entirely based on what suits him. He allows Ianto to become unseen when he has no need of him, but orders him to be part of the team when he is faced with the reality of his treatment of Ianto. This demand is done with Ianto on his knees and a gun to his head. The only motives that Ianto would have had for agreeing were fear of execution and planning a future betrayal. In this scene he is filled with too much rage to be afraid of the threats; and he never had any wish to betray Torchwood Three, his only goal was to heal Lisa. To assume otherwise directly contradicts his actions in future episodes.
What can be considered the cruellest action towards Ianto is the use of Myfanwy to attack the Cyberwoman. Ianto came to the Hub with Myfanwy, named her and was the one who fed her and cleaned her nesting area. For Ianto, Myfanwy would have been something of a very large, dangerous, untamed pet. Something else that he cared about ripped away from him just as brutally as in London. However, what's almost worse than London is that she remains present, still exactly the same but completely different to him. Her existence for Ianto will forever be tainted by the memory of her attacking the Cyberwoman who bore Lisa's face. Such a minor loss at the time compared to Lisa, but nevertheless something he cares about also taken from him.
As if the episode did not already cause Ianto enough emotional anguish, one of the most emotionally charged scenes had not yet come. After Myfanwy’s attack, Ianto attempts to enter the Hub again through the tourist office. Before he has a chance to enter however, the other four members of Torchwood catch him up, leading to him pointing a gun at them and stating that he has “nothing left to lose”. Jack is able to call his bluff and disarm him, pinning him against a wall with a gun to his head once more. What follows is a furious exchange in which Jack demands that Ianto enter the Hub again to execute Lisa if she was not already dead and Ianto refuses, saying that “I won't do it, you can't make me”. His only attempt to defend himself is minor struggling when he is first pinned to the wall, after which he remains still. He has no way of knowing whether or not Jack will actually follow through on his threat “you execute her or I'll execute you both”, meaning that he is fully prepared to die rather than comply. At this point, Ianto has been completely stripped of his humanity - threatened with a deadly weapon, defenceless and being forced to choose between killing what he still sees as the love of his life and dying in defiance, which would do nothing to prevent the Cyberwoman’s execution. He doesn't know if she is already dead, but chooses death over pretending to comply then running or taking the chance that he will not have to shoot her since she could already be dead. He eventually is submissive and goes after her, however it can be safely assumed that his intention was not to kill her but to attempt to save her again. He goes in alone and could easily have run, but he chooses to cling to what he has, the remnants of Lisa.
A dreadful scene awaited him within. The body of Lisa with chunks of flesh torn away from the bones lies in a pool of her own blood; and an unknown woman stands before him. A bloody line is drawn across the woman’s forehead; and she recognises him. She calls to him, revealing the horrific truth of the Cyberwoman's actions. This woman has the body of a young pizza delivery girl, one that Ianto had called here, and the cybernetically modified brain of Lisa Hallett. The bloody line is from where the Cyberwoman had opened her skull, performed a brain transplant and fused the skull pieces back together. This moment truly annihilated any hope Ianto had left, forced him to see that there was nothing of Lisa left in the most brutal of ways. Ianto raised his gun but could not pull the trigger, whatever this monster was still had some of Lisa's memories. By talking of the times Ianto spent with Lisa, the Cyberwoman poisoned those memories. He had lost so much, now even his happy memories have been destroyed for him. Lisa Hallett died at Canary Wharf, but that was the day that her lover’s soul died with her body.

ok when you all said "Cyberwoman" was bad i wasn't quite expecting ianto's half cyberman girlfriend (who's basically in a cyber bikini) that he keeps in the basement and killed a man, to get pecked *NEARLY to death after she was covered in barbecue sauce by Torchwood's pet pterodactyl. AND THEN it turns out she survived by transplanting her brain into the poor pizza lady who delivers them pizza (WHO THE FUCK ORDERED PIZZA?!?! [of course it was ianto and his coleslaw i forgot. he's an idiot]) then the Torchwood team all take turns at shooting her while ianto's sobbing. ok. he doesn't even get fired.

just showed the first three episodes of Torchwood to my best mate while he recovers from top surgery because now I have a captive audience for my insanity
long fucking post of my opinions under the cut
First of all the audio stings and sound track and burned into my fucking frontal cortex I watched it for the first time 3 years ago and the moment i heard it again I was like yeah this is all i’m gonna hear for months now
I honestly remembered it as worse than it is, first ep is not super batshit, the dialogue is insane but well written, my friend was like “why did you think i wouldn’t like this??”
also to add to my Owen bullshit i had completely forgotten his fucking gay kiss moment in episode 1?? like why do they never revisit this like I know we joke about how every character is bi but he is the first character confirmed as bi and then he just never gets to make out with dudes again?? (also yeah that scene completely unethical like massive date rape vibes I am aware) my friend really liked Susie which was a shame lol seeing as she doesn’t stick around but anyway
He actually really enjoyed the sex gas ep like all the stuff with the girl purposefully using the alien sex murder to kill her shitty ex boyfriend my friend was like “jennifer’s body could never” like we do joke about this ep a lot but it is interesting. my friend also didn’t think the complete hornyness was bad like he said that it’s about being in your 20’s so it works. I honestly remembered it being a lot more immature around sex and now i’m actually in my 20’s i’m like no i know people like this, it’s like being a horny teenager but with a lot less angst around sex this kinda makes sense.
What I will say is I had forgotten how many unsolicited sexual comments people make especially Jack and Owen it’s definitely a product of it’s time in that regard especially as Owen is treated as a fuck boy but Jack is “charming”. Obviously episode 3 is kinda Owen realising he’s part of the problem so like early character development yay but yh I did get worried showing it to my friend while i’m soft launching him as my new blorbo of the week lol.
anyway, i was pleasantly surprised that i remembered it as worse than it is and that my friend is now hopefully going to be as insane as I am about this and it’s fuelling my anger about what happened to Tosh and Owen.
they are so prevalent in the early episodes, Owens gets basically his own episode in episode 3!! Ianto barely shows up until obviously ep 4 is cyberwoman and it was probably intentional to have him fade into the background early on so he’s more secretive but still??
like I remember so clearly being confused about how little screen time he got and how much Tosh and Owen got when I knew he was in the doctor who crossover so I knew he was a big deal, it just fucking sucks that Tosh and Owen were clearly major characters from day one and they just get dropped for Gwen and Ianto later on !!

I'm watching torchwood for the first time (I know, I live under a rock and I should've watched it yonks ago) and it is screwing with me.
Like day one and cyberwoman are so shit it hurts and countryside would be an average episode of a horror show but is unhinged in the context of there's aliens but this isn't aliens. So yeah I'm kinda mostly enjoying it.
Anyway, my biggest pet peeve is from the start I was like Ianto is like Jack's little butler boyfriend or something. Like come on there's is something there. Then cyberwoman. Like no, that man is not in love with her, he wants Jack. It annoyed me to no end.
Also Owen makes me hate Gwen. Like I really like her but her and Owen is kinda ruining her charachter. Owen is fucking awful and I've hated him since whatever he was doing in that first ep.
So yeah rant over. Again to reiterate I'm enjoying it but I just feel like there's some inconsistent characterisation and weird relationships that just exsist because the writers were like these are 'adult themes'.

Day 11 - Do you have a favorite track from the score? Maybe the soundtrack?
the woman on the roof is very important to me, i adore it. also the main out of time theme (and there's a bunch of alt versions of it here as well. the final one is particularly lovely, it's what plays at the v end of that ep.) also tosh's death theme makes me emotional. owen's theme + death of dr owen harper are also both iconic and special to me.
these aren't featured in the official ost, but i also really adore this bit (25:25) in end of days (but also that episode's music as a whole stands out to me), up until gwen punches jack, as well as this bit, at 24:54, that plays in cyberwoman ("haven't you ever loved anyone?")... if anyone knows if those leitmotifs show up in any of the ost songs, i'd be grateful.
i've enjoyed quite a few songs off the tw soundtrack, but my fav by far is be there by unkle! it plays when owen's in the bar with mark in combat, and it's a damn good song with insane lyrics. ("you don't wanna go there / let me lead you by the hand" "as i look into your eyes / i pay no mind / i found the way to get inside you / i'll give you peace of mind" like hello?? as if that episode wasn't gay enough.) anyway i adore it and it's a staple of my owen playlist.

okay iirc cyberwoman is a very good ep. however it does commit the crime of metal bikini so points deducted for that

If you could replace any episode of Torchwood, which one would you ? For me it's out of the rain. It is kind of the distributor of s2 . Both s1 and 2 had at least one ep focused on a character. S1 had Small worlds and Captain Jack Harkness for Jack , Greeks bearing gifts for Tosh , Combat and Ghost machine for Owen , Random shoes for Gwen ( yes it's Eugene's pov but come on its Gwen's episode.) and Cyberwoman for Ianto. Season 2 also does this . The Owen trilogy for Owen , to the last man for tosh , Adrift for Gwen and Adam and KKBB split make one Jack ep. And we are left with only Ianto . Out of the rain is group episode, that's kind of wierd , because it seems as in its Ianto's focus ep, but it's not. And you're left with a cast where every member has a focus ep but one . Anyway the writers are cowards and also have lot to answer to if you get me

◭ Torchwood 2022 Truth Fest ◮
Tumblr media
We are launching a new fest where the main theme is truth!
Would you like to put your favourite Torchwood character under the sci-fi equivalent of a truth spell? Have old secrets come to light? Make the team play truth or dare? Then this is the perfect fest for it!
You can make fanworks exploring canon-compliant truths, such as Gwen breaking the retcon and remembering her first brush with Torchwood in ep 1, the team finding out about Lisa in Cyberwoman, or Rhys finding out what Gwen's job really is in Meat, to list a few examples. Or you can build and explore AU situations, for example: Tosh finding out about Katie and that leading to her understanding Owen better, Jack finding out about Ianto's teenage shoplifting habit, or someone noticing the effect the glove is having on Suzie and trying to help her before she crosses the line.
It can be something small, like a small secret being revealed, or something as big as the revelation of the existence of aliens or of Torchwood to the entire world. We welcome any interpretation of the theme!
Tumblr media
This fest will run for the duration of the month of July, that is, from July 1st to July 31st.
This is an open fest; which means it does not require signing up. All you have to do is create a fanwork that fits the theme and submit it to us at any point within this month. Please remember to add any relevant content warnings!
We are providing the following 10 optional prompts:
1. secrets 2. revelations 3. lies 4. willing confessions 5. forced confessions (lie detectors, alien drugs, future tech, etc.) 6. white lies 7. misrepresentation / fakes (fake documents, fake identities, fake memories, etc.) 8. finding out the truth 9. remembering the truth 10. truth-related party games (truth or dare, truth or drink, two truths one lie, etc.)
We provide these prompts with the intention of helping creators by hopefully sparking some interesting ideas; however, we do not require that submissions fit into one of them. So long as your fanworks fit the general theme of the fest, you can use these optional prompts or not, as preferred.
Tumblr media
All types of fanworks are accepted for this fest, with the usual requirements: the minimum word count for writing is 500 words per prompt (fic, meta, not!fic, and headcanons; poetry is exempt from this requirement), 30 seconds is the minimum length for videos, and 3-songs plus a short explanation for why you picked each song is the minimum for music playlists. If you have an idea for a fanwork that seems unconventional or less common, send us an ask! We welcome all types of content for this fest and we will be happy to hear from you :)
As usual, we’ll have an ao3 collection for this fest.
You’ll be able to find all links in the notes!
If you have any questions, please send us an ask!

Rewatching Star Trek: First Contact for the first time in a zillion years, and man, I’d forgotten JUST how much I hate all stuff with the hyper sexualized Borg Queen doing her S&M seduction of Data.
I mean, I dunno what bugs me most, that the Borg would have a sexualized queen when they are a hive race that doesn’t even reproduce sexually** OR that is suggests that Hollywood has trouble imagining female villains that aren’t sexualized.
Seriously, imagine a Borg king (ignoring the obvious “hive” concept that made them go queen here). Does anyone think that if they had gotten a male actor for the part he would have had gone “sexy” in his dealings with Data, complete with a low cut top and heavy breathing on his skin. I seriously doubt it, at the time anyway.
Actually, she seems more cenobite than Borg.
Hmmmm…best get back to the movie. It’s funny, I remember the Picard stuff clearly, the Cochran stuff with mild amusement, but I have completely blotted out how the Borgy Babe/Pinocchio (fully functional, don’t ya know) PG adolescent virgin porn script section works out.
I don’t hate the movie! Honest! I’ve always considered it the good Next Gen movie.
Oh, and for the record, I really hated the Cyberwoman episode of Torchwood. The concept of a character keeping his cyberized girlfriend is great. The idea of a hyper sexualized female Cyberman is even stupider than a Borg. And (I haven’t rewatched the ep, so maybe it’s explained) I doubt even a partial cyberdization would be “sexy” any more than a half finished surgery is sexy.
Seriously, if a race has a goal of taking over individuals to make them effectively cogs in a machine with their individuality removed, it seems like sexual characteristics, both physical and emotional, would be no more likely to be preserved than hair color or a taste for strawberries. WHY would either a Borg or a Cyberman even have boobs as all????
Yeah, yeah. Finish the damn movie!
** I got Star Trek burn out early in Voyager, and admit I haven’t kept up with Trek lore after DS9. For all I know, what with 8 1/2 by 11 or whatever the the ex-Borg character was they gave some back story that had Borg sexually breeding. Still, it doesn’t seem to fit with their core nature….AKA the American SF juggernaut does Cybermen.

Tentoo was a biological metacrisis, what happened in the third doctor audio was still a mental metacrisis like what happened to Donna.
Tentoo has the same exact mind && he is not another man and his mind did not burn. If you are using audios as canon you could listen to Flight Into Hull.
im just happy to pour out all the lore i got in my from reading and listening and watching dr who. so buckle up yo.
Considering the 50th anniversary with Paul McGann bringing up literal characters strictly from audios as a goodbye speech all the way to how he also interacts with other doctors in comics, tv (as seen later with 13) AND BOOKS: not only is the audios are canonical alongside the books and tv but that whatever we see on the tv on a week to week basis is just a snippet of the travels that is later referenced or mentioned upon in other forms of media (my favourite examples is the river meeting ten FRESH AFTER TEN SAW HER JUST DIE AFTER DROPPING DONNA OFF FROM THE LIBRARY ADVENTURE LIKE WOW BAD TIMING ON HIS PART GOOD LORD. and of course the time lord victorious multi media of comic/book/audio that takes place as its own season of specials with 8 9 10 DIRECTLY after water of mars BUT BEFORE THE 50TH FOR TEN TIMELINE WISE LIKE SIR 10 OF THE TARDIS CHILL OUT PLS?).
They all tie in together, and unfortunately, that means that all the batshit ways of 8th dr adventures are canon to our televised dr. (even ripping straight from time's champion plotline with 13 from 8/human nature with 10 from 7/time vortex absorption to become a god with rose from 8/forced separation by being sent to a future or past incarnation of the dr to gabby in the comics (10 to 12) from charley in the audios (8 to 6) etc.). And if those audios are canonical - so is everything else since other incarnations references said events of tv/book/comic/audios within their own lil adventures as well. That being said:
10too however is very much not that. He has the same mind up to christmas invasion AND THEN NONE OF THE CHARACTER GROWTH WHATSOEVER FROM TEN. HE NEVER EXPERIENCED LOSING ROSE IN DOOMSDAY AND SKIPPED MARTHA ENTIRELY AND SKIPPED WILF AND MISS MINOGUE AND ALL OF DONNA UP TIL the end of turn left and then stolen earth/journey’s end because as 10too himself states that he could see in donna’s mind WAY BEFORE DAVROS SHOCKS HER - thereby cementing that he’s not the actual dr. he’s just essentially jackson lake but reverse.
The difference between 10too and 3rd dr - regeneration-order-wise - is that the 3rd dr’s metacrisis event is what essentially a doctor who-version of what happened with cyberlisa and the pizza delivery girl in torchwood’s cyberwoman ep. albeit that this was between two humans in the worse case scenario versus what happens when one attempts to do this to a time lord and a human. in 3′s case, its either all in one fell scoop of physical brain transference or what exactly happens with the human. Either way, its really bad for the humans involved. again audios are wild. a good near reference of this is idris. but tardises do not equal time lords/gallifreyans/the dr’s true species. 3 didnt lose a limb and grew another him via the human dna nor have his entire conscious in another body. audios and tecteun love brushing over the very-in-your-face-body-horror.
even in flight into hull and other jackie and 10too- jackie and himself complain about his lack of self. (this is a running theme with 10too licensed content - him losing his time lord knowledge day by day and is struggling in building the very thing that came SO EASILY, EFFORTLESSLY for him to build prev. that the end result when dealing with threats is just blowing them up and calling it day - very much harking back to pm harriet jones or martha and the ostenhagen key or jack and sarah jane with the warp star - that it takes JACKIE to remind himself about actually REASONING WITH THE THREAT. TO SLOW DOWN. TO NOT FORGET HE IS NOT A HAND THAT CAN JUST DROP FROM A GREAT HEIGHT AND LIVE? that being said, his mind in a way does not burn. however it seems VERY HEAVILY IMPLIED IN OTHER MEDIA AND AUDIOS that he is getting alzheimer’s due to being a previously limb that was strictly as a bridge to enter the minds of humans. that empire of the wolf comic MADE THIS IN A NEAR POSSIBLE OUTCOME FOR HIM WHY DID THEY DRAW IT LIKE THAT? THAT IS A WELL KNOWN TV AND FILM TROPE I DO NOT LIKE WHAT IT IS IMPLYING FOR 10TOO
if you stopped at flight into hull for 10too content - STAY. DONT BE LIKE ME. DONT. ITS SAD AF IN THESE STREETS. only one is gonna live and what it seems like in donna’s case? sorry 10too and his deteriorating mind. u were a real g in the streets and the sheets.
