cc spoilers and shit i had to write out
i watched camp camp s2e12 and im feeling the exact same thing i felt when i watched s1e12
the lyrics of the song at the end are doing something to me, i know that feeling of not being a bad kid yet being treated like if you were (have to say my gf knows it better..) and seeing max cry wasnt good to me
i swear david and gwen will end up taking care of max no matter which kind of relationship they end up having (i mean no matter if theyre a couple or not they will be like parents to him) seriously this episode fucked me up but thats what i was expecting
apart of that i loved seeing all the other familiars my faves were nerris’ parents, neil’s dad and nurf’s mom i love how nerris’ dad is just like her and though her mom is not, she tries to join their fun, same with neil’s dad and i like how nurf tries to forgive his mom for all the things she has done and the things that got her to jail and is trying to help her everytime he can see her
also i didnt fuckin expect that to happen to cameron, guess it was time i wanna see him again tbh he probably will appear again
bro my chest hurts, this show has become very important to me
when is that song gonna be out
jesus this is the same feeling i had with keeper of the flame why u do this to me

Max and Simon have a question for Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist‘s titular leading lady, and they’re asking it via song.
In TVLine’s exclusive photo from the NBC musical dramedy’s Season 2 premiere (airing Tuesday, Jan. 5 at 8/7c), the two fellas passionately serenade Zoey (played by Jane Levy) with “Are You Gonna Be My Girl” by Jet. And plot twist: Romantic rivals Max (Skylar Astin) and Simon (John Clarence Stewart) are pals now!
Following the death of her beloved father in the Season 1 ender, “Zoey has hid herself from the world for six weeks,” showrunner Austin Winsberg tells TVLine. “On her first day out amongst the living again, she discovers that Max, Simon and Mo (Alex Newell) have all actually become friends in her absence.”
That revelation “alone is a lot for her to handle,” Winsberg previews. “But things get even more intense when she hears both Max and Simon singing ‘Are You Gonna Be My Girl,’ and she realizes that their whole complicated love triangle is still very much alive.”
As TVLine previously reported, Andrew Leeds (aka Zoey’s brother David) and Alice Lee (sister-in-law Emily) have been promoted to series regulars for Season 2, along with Michael Thomas Grant and Kapil Talwalkar, who play Zoey’s Sprq Point colleagues Leif and Tobin. Additionally, Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows) will recur as George, a new programmer at Sprq Point, while Aussie actor/musician Felix Mallard (Happy Together, Neighbours) will appear in multiple episodes as Zoey’s childhood neighbor Aiden. Finally, Jee Young Han — who has appeared on Superstore, Station 19 and Santa Clarita Diet — will recur as Jenna Kang, Emily’s wild child older sister who comes to town to “help” Emily and David with their new baby.

SPOILER QUOTES:
NEW!
“Well, Simon is back from Vegas in ep 12/S1 Finale. He comes back to see Max and Zoey in a way that he’s a little bit surprised about, where they’re doing something that he thought was very much their own thing. So that takes Simon by surprise. And then Zoey starts to see Max in a new light in this episode, and by seeing Max in this new light, it ends up taking their relationship into a surprise direction. Zoey’s relationships with both Max and Simon actually get to a new point over the course of Episode 12.” - Austin Winsberg #cheesequake #whosawthatcoming
                          **********************************************
NEW!
S1 finale of ZEP features a 7-minute scene that was captured in a single shot (aka “a oner”). “We rehearsed it for two weeks leading up to the shooting of it. It required massive coordination amongst many different departments in order to get it right, and it’s probably the number — or certainly one of the numbers — that I’m most proud of all season.” -  teases showrunner Austin Winsberg.
                          **********************************************
NEW!
“I don’t know how Zoey would end up singing again...anymore” [In S2...after that one time in 1x08 during her glitch] - Jane [”Oh, right...” - Skylar] Skylar & Jane IG Live
hmmm... what does this mean? Why “can’t” she sing anymore after S1? Is it cause there’s no “dad’s declining health” reason? Is it cause she has no voice/ability to speak anymore? Is it cause...
                          **********************************************
NEW!
Question: What is the scoop on Zoey and Max from Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist? I’m dying to know if these two have chance of being together by the Season 1 finale. What is in store for them? –Ashley Answer: I delivered your Q to Austin Winsberg, creator of the NBC freshman, and he wrote back, “Zoey and Max’s relationship will continue to evolve and change in surprising ways for the rest of this season and beyond. By the end of Episode 12 (airing in early May), I believe Zoey and Max fans will feel like these two have been on a real journey together — and also that their journey is, in fact, just beginning.”
                          **********************************************
“On top of the health issues with her father, Zoey's also got two other men in her life who were already making her life complicated even before she finds herself uncontrollably singing her emotions. Some particular musical numbers in ep 1x08 result in some awkward conversations with engaged coworker Simon and BFF Max, continuing this rocky romantic journey Jane's been on all season, though Levy thinks they're both being a little unfair. "She will continue to go down both roads, and you know, they are different roads, and one I think is messier than the other," she says. "In my opinion, I'm kind of like, give Zoey a break. Why does she have to choose anything? She never promised anything to these people, she hasn't broken any promises. She's like dealing with extremely stressful and painful moments in her life and like these men need to give her a goddamn break." It doesn't sound like they will be giving her a break anytime soon, but Levy did tease a finale number between Zoey and Max that is "sweet, funny, sexy" and the audience is going to lose their minds over it.” - Jane
                           **********************************************
“Zoey is someone who is not in touch with her feelings or is constantly running away from her feelings or burying her true feelings so she can be good at her job or not make things fall apart with her awkward personality. So for me, with each of these songs, the “Zoe-ality” had to be a deep desire [but] then when you cut back to reality, you’re back to Zoey covering up her feelings, being the Type A coder girl who’s just trying to solve problems and doesn’t want to really admit what’s going on inside of her, whether it’s her crush on her best friend or wanting to have sex with a coworker or knowing her boss did something unethical.” - Jane
                           **********************************************
“You’ll get a lot more from both relationships (Z/M & Z/S..after 1x08). There will be a lot more intimacy between Zoey & Simon, and Zoey & Max. And there is a number in our finale that was one of my favorite things we did and it involves one of them. It is a love scene with two musical numbers and it’s funny and sexy and really cute all at the same time.” - Jane
                           **********************************************
“We never wanting to make it (Simon vs Max) feel like a competition or a choice. Because that doesn't only preserve our characters, but it really protects Zoey. Zoey is nobody's prize and she's nobody's to claim or win over. So we do love the idea that there's a Team Max and Team Simon thing. But we tend to, when in performance, really take care of each other. There are scenes that Simon and Max have down the line and they have some difficult conversations. There's an obvious way to play all those scenes; they can be sizing each other up, looking at each other up and down, a game-on type of mentality. John and I have never seen it that way.” - Skylar
                          **********************************************
“What I love about Max and Zoey is that even though she's pressured in that moment, she still does feel like she can tell Max. I think that that says a lot about their friendship and about their relationship. There's only very few people that know about this superpower that she has. It's very brave and daring of her to do that. The cards are out on the table now; she can't ever make any excuses for why she's acting a certain way towards him. It's really bold.” - Skylar
                          **********************************************
“There's two ways of seeing it [Z telling M about her powers]. There's, "Oh my God, thank you so much for telling me. Now everybody knows and everybody can live happily ever after." Or there's the feeling of, "Wow, there's been a betrayal. You're telling me you knew all this stuff?" As Zoey begins to let people in on her powers throughout the season, it's going to be interesting to see what people are really there for her and are understanding, and what people can't handle this new information.” - Skylar
                          **********************************************
“While Levy won't reveal how Zoey's heart songs change things for her moving forward, she does tease that this episode [1x08] is going to have far-reaching ramifications, but not in the way you might expect.  "It turns out to be positive," she says. "A lot of our show’s message is that we are all the same, the human condition is complex but we’re all going through it together. You don’t know what the person beside you is going through but you might actually relate to their pain or desires. Zoey admitting these things that are so horrific to her actually makes people understand her in this way that she doesn’t allow when she’s being her emotionally awkward, neurotic self. And Zoey going through this will make her even more empathetic and compassionate to other people’s experiences, especially when she hears their heart songs moving forward." - Jane
                         **********************************************
“One thing that we can tease is that we have two big Broadway Tony-winners coming in, in the next few episodes. Renée Elise Goldsberry from Hamilton plays Joan’s work rival, and Bernadette Peters comes in, in Episode 11, as an unexpected help to the family. The love triangle between Zoey, Max and Simon continues to evolve, in unexpected ways. And we have one number, at the end of Episode 12, that’s a six and a half or seven minute long one-take oner that is the thing I’m probably most proud of, all season.”- Austin
                         **********************************************
“There is one number in which I sing one verse and that’s it after this. [read: after ep 1x08, where Zoey sings all the songs]” - Jane
                        **********************************************
"You will see her go down both roads and there are some fun intimate numbers, musical numbers between Zoey and Simon. And there’s some between Zoey and Max as well. I really like how Austin has crafted this “love triangle.” Can’t give away much more than that.” - Jane
                         **********************************************

Seasons of Love a Max Richman/Zoey Clarke fanfiction
Tumblr media
A/N: So this chapter is taking place post episode 10 with the Max/Zoey stuff from episode 11 as well. I'm figuring with everything going on Zoey hasn't really had a chance to fill Maggie on what has been happening with her and Max. But no matter what is happening with him and Zoey, Max cares about all the Clarkes as his second family.
Thank you all for the wonderful comments and reponses!
As always I'm just borrowing them, they all belong to the wonderful Austin Winsberg!
Summary: Mother’s Day
This month's song is “Can’t Hurry Love” by The Supremes (Listen here https://youtu.be/uZj032MNIx4)
May 10 Mother’s Day
April 12 Easter
March 17 St. Patrick’s Day
February 14 Valentine’s Day
December 31-January 1 New Year’s Eve/New Year’s Day
Maggie sat at the kitchen island watching as Max prepared Mother’s Day brunch.
David and Zoey were both hopeless in the kitchen, so when Max started joining them he had volunteered to take over  cooking for Mother’s Day. Something that the whole family was grateful for.
Max wasn’t his usual talkative self though, there was something bothering him.
“Max, sweetie? Are you okay?” she asked.
Max gave her a small smile as he turned off the stove, placing the french toast onto the waiting platter.
“It’s fine. Nothing big,” he shrugged, he put the platter into the oven to keep the food warm.
Maggie patted the stool next to her, pouring them both mimosas from a pitcher. “Come sit, and tell me about it.”
Max smiled as he took a seat.
“So what’s got you so quiet today?”
Max hesitated, did he tell Maggie what had happened? He could at least give her the rough details of it, without revealing Zoey’s powers.
“This is a little embarrassing,” he began.
Maggie sat patiently letting him take his time.
“I confessed to Zoey that I’m in love with her.”
Maggie raised her eyebrows,  she wasn’t surprised that Max loved her daughter, she had known for a while. What was more surprising was Zoey hadn’t breathed a word of this to her.
“I made a big deal out of it too, because I thought she might feel the same way.”
“Big moment, big memories, kind of thing?” Maggie offered.
Max nodded, “Flash mob at the mall. And at the end of it she left, no response.”
Maggie winced, Zoey did not do well at confronting her own emotions and feelings, she never had.
“Turns out she’s actually known how I felt for a while but didn’t say anything. She knew even when she set me up with our barista, which should have been a sign I guess.”
Maggie frowned, she remembered Zoey mentioning something about Max briefly dating a girl, but that they had ended things after less than a month.
“So we talked, and she explained that she was afraid of risking our friendship and losing me. I told her that I needed some space for a bit, but then she got the news about Mitch’s meds not working.”
That day was still fresh in Maggie’s memory, her whole world had tilted on its axis. She spent all day trying to get a hold of Zoey, so they could support one another. But Zoey had been in her own fog that day, unable to deal with the news or even talk about it.
“That day was rough, and some things she wasn’t expecting to reveal were said. That’s how I found out the real reason she wouldn’t take a chance on us was because she apparently has feelings for both me and Simon.”
Maggie sighed, she knew all about the problems with Simon. She had tried to warn Zoey, telling her of her own past with an unavailable man. She had hoped she might save her daughter from the pain she went through.
“We had an argument about it and then I got offered the  promotion to the 6th floor. So I took it, needing to put some space between us and to do something for myself. Which led to an even worse argument and now we aren’t really speaking.” Max finished, fiddling with his  glass, unable to look Maggie in the eye.
Maggie shook her head, her heart aching for the young man in front of her. She and Mitch had been hoping that Max and Zoey would end up together.
Mitch had even commented once how much they reminded him of the two of them in their younger years. Which of course meant that Max had his work cut out for him, just like Mitch had with her.
She reached over and wrapped him in a hug, just as she had done for her own children over the years.
Max released a breath and returned the hug. “Thanks Maggie,” he pulled back and gave her a small smile.
Maggie looked at him, “I know things seem rough right now between you two, but just be patient. It will work out like it's supposed to.”
Max nodded, knowing that the silence wouldn’t last long between them. He wanted to be angry at Zoey, but he also knew how hard things were getting and that he had just been an easy outlet for her anger.
He heard a throat clear from the doorway and glanced up. Zoey was standing there awkwardly.
Maggie walked over to her and gave her a hug.
“Happy Mother’s Day Mom,” Zoey said looking everywhere but at Max.
“Thank you sweetheart. I'm glad you came.”
“Why wouldn’t I?” Zoey asked, confused.
“No reason. I’m going to go check on your Dad and Howie, can you help Max get everything onto the table?” Maggie left the room before she could respond.
The two of them stood there awkwardly not making eye contact.
Max walked over to the oven and grabbed the food he had placed inside to keep warm.
“Here, I’ll take that,” Zoey said holding out her hands.
Max just raised his eyebrows and handed her the dish wordlessly.
Zoey walked over to the table while Max went to get more eggs from the fridge.
Zoey sighed and put the plate down hard. Max looked over at her startled.
"This is stupid," she said looking at him.
Max opened his mouth to respond.
"No, let me finish," Zoey held up her hand.
"I'm sorry, Max. I'm sorry for everything I said that day. None of it was true. I was angry at everything that was happening and I took it out on you." She fiddled with the strap on her SPRQ watch nervously. "I haven't been a great friend lately. I'm not saying I expect us to just go back to the way things were…"
Max nodded, "I'm sorry too, Zo. I know how tough things have been lately and…"
Zoey interrupted him, "Max you have been nothing but supportive for me and my family. Hell you're here on Mothers Day cooking brunch for my family."
Max smiled slightly, "Well, I couldn't let Maggie starve. "
Zoey looked indignant, "I can make scrambled eggs I'll have you know!"
Max held out a bowl and whisk to her, "Prove it."
Zoey shook her head and took the tools. "You watch, these will be the best scrambled eggs you've eaten."
Max took a step back watching as Zoey began cracking eggs. He could do this, they could figure out a new normal for them. And maybe someday….
"Max can you hand me…." Zoey began but stopped as she heard music beginning. She glanced at Max as he began singing.
I need love, love to ease my mind
I need to find, find someone to call mine
But Mama said
You can't hurry love
No, you just have to wait
She said love don't come easy
It's a game of give and take
You can't hurry love
No, you just have to wait
You got to trust, give it time
No matter how long it takes
Zoey paused her stirring to watch him as he sang while getting the table ready.
But how many heartaches must I stand
Before I find a love to let me live again?
Right now the only thing that keeps me hangin' on
When I feel my strength, yeah, is almost gone
I remember Mama said
You can't hurry love
No, you just have to wait
She said love don't come easy
It's a game of give and take
You can't hurry love
No you just have to wait
She said trust, give it time
No matter how long it takes
Max turned around to find her staring at him. He knew that look, "I just sang to you, didn't I." He sighed.
Zoey smiled, "It’s okay Max. I like hearing you sing." She admitted.
"What did I sing this time?" He asked, a little wary of the answer.
"Something about you can’t hurry love, you just have to wait."
Max blushed, he wished that her powers wouldn't work on him. Then she wouldn't feel like he was overwhelming her with his feelings.
"Zoey...I…"
She waved her hand at him stirring the eggs into the pan. "Max, it's okay. Really. I can’t help my powers. And I promised to be open with you, so if it ever bothers me I'll tell you."
Max nodded
"Now the eggs are almost done so why don’t you go get everyone, and I'll get them on the table.
"Sure." He headed into the hall, stopping as he heard Zoey softly singing.
I remember Mama said
You can't hurry love
No, you just have to wait
She said love don't come easy
It's a game of give and take
You can't hurry love
No you just have to wait
She said trust, give it time
No matter how long it takes
Max smiled, maybe there was some hope for him after all.

Zoey’s Extraordinary Girls Night
Tumblr media
I watched this episode in a weird mood, and the way the episode went was another nail in the coffin. As it’s becoming the norm, let’s talk about the music and the plot individually.
On the songs side i gotta put Emily’s song on top this episode, and Deb’s as my least favorite. The Simon/Max/Mo song was a nice tune an a weird “boyband” moment in an episode that was kinda chill for the most part. Then there’s the church song that happened without powers, which is nice tho i gotta admit (maybe my mood didn’t help) i don’t know why THAT made Zoey emotional enough to end the episode saying her power is ruining her life. More on that in a bit don’t worry.
First i wanna talk about the cinematography of it all. Even tho i’ve talked about it some other time i find it super interesting that Zoey’s power works in different ways each time. Sometimes time stops, sometimes it doesn’t, and in case of today’s David song it slowed down. Should i try to read into that too?
Am i the only one who wants to disect the power like they kinda did in the first 2 episodes of season 1? Like, what triggers a song? What dictates if it’s a solo or a group song? So many questions we wont get answers too cuz that would kinda ruin the flow of the show.
So now the plot, and this is when i say I’M SORRY cuz when in the last review i said i hope Emily’s thing isn’t mom stress, i neglected DEPRESSION and that is a much serious thing that i don’t feel equipped to talk about as a young guy who will never be a dad. I gotta say in season 1 she kinda felt like an extra, but this season is proof that she’s also a great character. Going back to how scenes were shot i liked a lot the bathroom scene and how Zoey ended up mirroring her.
Maggie and Deb were a fun surprise at first, to be honest i forgot about her character. So when they go to the casino and we meet “Sabanna” i chuckled a couple times on how awkward it all was, it’s the last scene from that storyline that has me worried. Are they hinting at a gambling problem for Maggie? cuz i can’t see her falling into that so easily.
We also get the spa trio and they were mostly comic relief, i’m happy Mo/Perry is going well and Simon/Rose feels like it’s also going on autopilot, Simon worries me cuz he feels like a puppy who needs attention 24/7. Going into what may happen with Zoey i only see 2 reasons why she would say her powers are ruining her life:
Things like Simon (and others) saying one thing, and singing the opposite. I get that can be a little annoying when you find people lie to your face
Songs like Emily’s that kinda force her to see people suffer, In the bathroom scene i took the “mirroring” as a way to tell us that Zoey wanted the song to stop.
It would be sad if Zoey wanted to stop having the powers cuz at first she didn’t wanna get involved but by now she seemed to see the good it can do. On the meta level we are 2 episodes away from the end of the season (if it’s 12 like seasons 1) and the show is still in the air about a season 3 so i get we need to up the stakes.
What reasons will she give next episode? Will Simon also find out about the power? If she could get rid off it, how would that work? Guess we’ll have to wait

HBO Max New Releases: March 2021
https://ift.tt/3dVFDlk
It’s happening. It’s finally happening. What was once a particularly pervasive and aggressive Internet meme is now a reality. HBO Max’s list of new releases for March 2021 is highlighted by none other than the mythical Snyder cut.
The entity now known as Zach Snyder’s Justice League will premiere on March 18. While it was originally planned to be a four-part miniseries, this recut version of 2017’s ill-fated Justice League will in fact be a four-hour movie. But perhaps even four hours won’t be enough for fans who have been waiting years for just such an event.

Justice League: How Christopher Nolan Helped Prevent Zack Snyder from Seeing the Whedon Cut

If the Snyder Cut is not to your speed, there are plenty of other (and shorter) options on HBO Max in March. The series Generation premieres March 11 and is another look at the youths of today a la Euphoria. This one, however, just happens to be cowritten by an actual youth. Persona: The Dark Truth Behind Personality Tests is an intriguing-sounding documentary about the perils of Myers-Briggs tests and it premieres on March 4.
HBO Max closes out the month of March with another major blockbuster. Godzilla v. Kong will bow on March 31 and will hopefully deliver a fare share of monster mashing.
Here is everything else coming to HBO Max this month.

The Weekend Warrior’s January 2021 Preview
Happy New Year!
So we’re gonna do things a little different this month. If it works out, I might do this as a regular thing until I feel comfortable writing about box office on a weekly basis again. It may be a long while. As you’ll see, this is a fairly comprehensive preview of the month ahead, as it stands on the first day of posting this, which hopefully is Wednesday, January 6.
I will be updating this post regularly with reviews and any date changes, etc.  If you want to keep track of which movies I’ve reviewed, your best option is to bookmark my Rotten Tomatoes page, since more than likely, any new reviews will be added there at the same time they’re posted here.
Why do I have this bad feeling that doing the column this way is just gonna give me more work? (I was correct. Instead of writing about 6 movies every single week, I ended up writing about nearly 30 movies in one week.)
What’s surprising is that there are far fewer wide releases in January than any previous year, as I only count two or three in total. That’s not good.
Definitions:
Theatrical – Movie will play in any number of movie theaters, either in select locations or nationwide. Some of these may have a digital/VOD component.
Streaming – Movie is available to watch any time as part of a subscription streaming service aka Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max, Apple TV+, Shudder, Hulu, etc.
Virtual Cinema – Movie is available to watch through a ticketed system which shares profits with any number of local or nationwide arthouses or festivals. Some of these may be geoblocked.
VOD – Video on Demand, movie can be rented, downloaded and watched either for a set amount of time (24 hours+) or bought to watch any time, available on a variety of platforms including iTunes, Amazon Prime Video, Fandango Now and others. (Also may be called “Digital,” “PVOD,” “TVOD,” or merely “On Demand,”)
TUESDAY, JANUARY 5
Digital/VOD: Gun and a Hotel Bible (Freestyle Digital Media) Scooby Doo director Raja Gosnell teams with Alicia Joy LeBlanc to adapt the award-winning play starring Bradley Gosnell as Pete, a desperate man who is about to commit a violent act when he encounters Daniel Floren’s Gideon, a personified hotel bible, as they get into a philosophical discussion. It will be available to buy or rent on iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, DirecTV, On Demand, YouTube Movies, Vudu, Xbox, & FandangoNOW.
Streaming:
History of Swear Words (Netflix) No less than Nicolas Cage stars in Season 1 of the “educational series” on swear words that goes into the origins of all of your favorites!

MY REMBRANDT (Strand Releasing) Dutch filmmaker Oeke Hoogendijk’s documentary looks at a few of the just 37 private owners of Rembrandt paintings, particularly Amsterdam’s Jan Six, a young art dealer and member of a family who has owned many Rembrandts, but he’s obsessed with an unknown painting that might even have Rembrandt having painted himself into the picture. Another owner, Baron Eric de Rothschild, is obsessed with selling two paintings, creating a bidding war between two top art museums.  The film will be available through New York’s Film Forum Virtual Cinema and others.
Streaming: SURVIVING DEATH (Netflix) The new six-episode doc series is directed and exec. produced by Ricki Stern (Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work) and based on Leslie Kean’s best-selling book that looks into the possibility of an afterlife.

ONE NIGHT IN MIAMI… (Amazon Prime Video)   Regina King’s narrative directorial debut will open in more theaters after playing in Miami over the past few weeks will expand to other cities nationwide for a one-week theatrical release before streaming on Prime Video. You can read my reviews of the film here and here.

FEATURED FLICK!
THE REASON I JUMP (Kino Lorber) Naoki Higashida’s best-selling book that was translated into English by David Mitchell (Cloud Atlas) is turned into an arty doc directed by Jerry Rothwell. It’s based on Higashida’s revelations as a 13-year-old boy suffering dealing with autism blended with portraits of five other young people with autism.
Quick Thoughts:  I haven’t read Higashida’s book or its English translation, but it makes a beautiful and lyrical  accompaniment, as narrated by Jordan O’Donegan, for this look inside the life of a number of young autistic people, as their parents talk about trying to help their children without fully understanding what they’re going through. In many ways, this doc may offer some of the best insights into what it’s like to be autistic or dealing with an autistic family member in order to create some much-needed empathy for a condition so many face. The film is haunting and even horrifying at times, but it’s beautifully filmed to create a fully immersive experience.
REDEMPTION DAY (Saban Films) Hicham Hajji’s action thriller stars Gary Dourdan (CSI) as U.S. Marine Captain Brad Paxton whose wife Kate (Serinda Swan) is kidnapped by a terrorist group while working in Morocco, which forces him back into action to save the woman he loves. It also stars Andy Garcia, Ernie Hudson and Martin Donovan, and it will get a limited theatrical release and be available on Tuesday, Jan. 12, On Demand and Digital.
Quick Thoughts: While Hajji seems to bring some authenticity to this Mideast revenge thriller, the film starts out as a tribute to our fighting troops but then soon turns ridiculous, first with the kidnapping of his wife less than 24 hours after going to Morocco, and then some of the politics involved with helping her. Eventually, Dourdan goes in guns a-blazin’ in a way more apt for a movie from the ‘90s, and Hajji undoes a lot of the good will the film would have received if things were handled even somewhat tastefully.  Appearances by better-known actors like Garcia, Hudson and Donovan tends to distract from the story more than adding or enhancing what was already a problematic premise.
IF NOT NOW, WHEN? (Vertical) Actors Meagan Good and Tamara Bass make their directorial debuts with this movie about four high school friends (Good and Bass are two of them, presumably) who are brought back together to help one of them during a crisis. From the official summary: “It’s a story of love, forgiveness and the incredible bond between women.)
Digital/On Demand:
STARS FELL ON ALABAMA (Samuel Goldwyn Films) V.W. Scheich’s romantic comedy stars James Maslow as successful Hollywood agent Bryce Dixon who returns to Alabama after 15 years for his high school reunion, only to learn that he is one of his few friends not married with children, so he pretends his client Madison Belle, to pretend to be his girlfriend. American Idol winner Taylor Hicks appears in the movie as himself.
FEATURED FLICK!
THE DISSIDENT (Briarcliff Bryan Fogel’s documentary about the murder of journalist Jamal Kashouggi will be released On Demand today via ITunes. Reviewed in the previous Weekend Warrior column.
Deon Taylor’s thriller Fatale (reviewed last month) will also be available to watch via VOD starting today.

WORTH WATCHING!
PRETEND IT’S A CITY (Netflix) No less than Martin Scorsese directs this 7-part limited series about his long-time friend, critic and essayist Fran Lebowitz, as they explore New York City, presumably pre-pandemic. As someone who is celebrating my 34th year in New York City this week, I absolutely loved the series. Lebowitz is absolutely hilarious and Scorsese really pulls some amazing stories from out of her in this series that’s like a “how-to” for anyone who might ever want to live here. A truly joyful albeit crotchety take on New York living, which is the perfect combination to keep this series entertaining.
FEATURED FLICK!
HERSELF (Prime Video) Phyllida Lloyd’s dramedy, starring Clare Dunne (who co-wrote the script) as a single mother trying to create a home for her two daughters and who decides to build an affordable home for them, hits the streamer today.  Also reviewed in the previous Weekend Warrior column.
SUNDAY, JANUARY 10
Critics Choice Super Awards The inaugural edition of the Critics Choice’s genre film and television awards show will be broadcast on the CW tonight, hosted by Kevin Smith and Dani Fernandez.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 12
Digital/VOD: SKYFIRE (ScreenMedia) The Simon-West directed thriller is set on the Tianhuo Island in a Pacific Rim volcanic belt where a young scientist (Hannah Quinlivan), who has invented a volcanic warning system, returns to prevent more death only to find that it’s been turned into a volcano theme park by Jason Isaacs. Okay, then. This will available On Demand.
THE BID (GVN Releasing) Marquis Boone’s directorial debut has him and co-writer Richard Harris (not that one) playing Philadelphia rappers who get framed by a police officer who sends them to prison to fight the prison system from the inside. As I started that last sentence, I presumed it was a comedy until I got to the last half of it.
CURSE OF AURORE (Freestyle Digital Releasing) Mehran C. Torgoley’s horror film is about a “Dark Web” thumb drive found by a YouTuber that involves a trio of American filmmakers including Liana Barron’s Lena, who are in Quebec researching the true crime case of a young girl named Aurore Gagnon, murdered in 1920 by her parents in a case of child abuse. As the filmmakers investigate the place where she was killed, they experience paranormal occurrences… and yes, it’s 2021 an we’re still getting Blair Witch Project “homages.”
GO/DON’T GO (Gravitas Ventures) Alex Knapp writes/directs and stars in this “psychosexual thriller” in which he plays the sole survivor after an unknown cataclysm with visons of his best friend Kyle (Nore Davis) introducing him to Olivia Luccardi’s Kay, the love of his life. It will be out via digital and cable VOD platforms.

2021 New York Jewish Film Festival This long-running series from Film at Lincoln Center will run virtually this year, beginning with the Ophir Award-winning Here We Are from director Nir Bergman (who won Best Director), a road trip tale of a divorced dad hitting the road with his autistic son. The festival’s centerpiece is Winter Journey, co-directed by Anders Østergaard and Erzsébet Rácz, and starring the great Bruno Ganz. The festival also includes Israel’s entry to this year’s Oscars, Ruthy Pribar’s Asia. You can read all about the films in the program here and can get a 17-film All-Access pass for the entire line-up for $125.00.
FEATURED FLICK!
THE WHITE TIGER (Netflix) Ramin (99 Homes, Man Push Cart) Bahrani directs this comedic adaptation of Balram Halwai’s 2008 Man Booker Prize-winning bestseller. Halwai is played by Adarsh Gourav, as it follows his journey from being a poor driver who uses his wit and cunning to become a successful entrepreneur in India.  Although Balram has been trained by society to only be a servant, he finds a way to work his way up through the system and try to change things from a new position within society. This will get a very limited theatrical release today before hitting Netflix on January 22.
Streaming: STALKER: THE HUNT FOR A SERIAL KILLER (Netflix) Tiller Russell’s docuseries tells the story about a serial killer that struck Los Angeles in 1985 in the middle of a record-breaking heatwave, the victims ranging from six to 82 years old.
THURSDAY, JANUARY 14
Theatrical/On Demand:  BLOODY HELL (The Horror Collective) Alister Grierson’s violent horror-comedy stars Ben O’Toole as a man with a mysterious past who flees the country to escape his personal hell only to end up somewhere much worse. It opens in select cities and On Demand, and then will be on DVD and Blu-ray on Tuesday, January 19.
Streaming:
LOCKED DOWN (HBO Max) The Doug Liman-directed romantic comedy, starring Anne Hathaway and Chiwetel Ejiofor, about a heist set during a pandemic that’s written by Steven Knight will hit the streamer today. This movie was fully made during the pandemic.
HUNTED (Shudder) The live action English debut from Persepolis and Chicken with Plums director Vincent Paronnaud will stream on Shudder today. It stars Lucie Debay as Eve, who becomes the target of a misogynistic plot against two men who pursue her through the forest where she’s forced to survive. From the synopsis: “But survival isn’t enough for Eve. She will have revenge!” (Okay, that exclamation point is my own. Definitely sounds like something that would require one.)
FRIDAY, JANUARY 15
Note: This is Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday weekend, so many government agencies and schools are off on Monday. Not sure that will really have an effect on anything.

Theatrical:
THE MARKSMAN (Briarcliff/Open Road) (NEW REVIEW!) Liam Neeson stars in his second theatrical release in the past six months, Robert (Trouble with the Curve) Lorenz’s action-thriller in which Neeson plays a rancher on the Arizona border who ends up defending a young Mexican boy who is trying to escape from cartel assassins that followed him into the States. I haven’t seen this yet, nor do I know if I’ll have a chance. I’m guessing this is being released as a typical January release and not as an awards contender with the Oscar deadline pushed back to February 28.
Mini-Review:  Here we’re into a brand new year, and yet, we’re getting the third movie about an old man watching over a young child. This time it’s Liam Neeson as Vietnam sniper Jim Henson, who is living on his ranch in an Arizona border town with his dog Jackson with financial problems that might take his home away from him. A chance encounter on the border when Jim witnesses a single mother with her son being chased by the cartel, leaves the mother dead and the young, Miguel (Jacob Perez), in danger of being next. Jim decides to take the boy across the country to his family in Chicago, chased the entire way by the cartel.
While The Marksman attempts to create a topical action-thriller, it isn’t one that necessarily feels very timely, only because we’ve seen so many border-set movies over the past few years, maybe for obvious reasons. Director Robert Lorenz is a long-time Clint Eastwood collaborator, both as producer and assistant-director, and you probably will notice a number of similar stylistic flares in common –  you also can totally see Eastwood playing the Neeson role if he was twenty years younger.
The movie comes across more like last year’s Let Him Go rather than Neeson’s own 2020 movie, Honest Thief, and maybe that’s for the better since this seems to be better suited for his specialized skills, both in terms of action and drama.  Not that there is a ton of action in the movie, but the few shootouts and chases are decent enough, but nothing too insane. I’m sure ultra-liberals might have issues with certain scenes like how easy it is for Jim to buy a gun or teaching the young Miguel to use one, but that just seems creating an unnecessary political overlay.
While the majority of the film is Jim and Miguel on this road trip, there’s a nice role for Katheryn Winnick as Jim’s border police—well, it’s never really clear if she’s his daughter or not--but otherwise, the Mexican actors are not particularly good compared to Neeson – sadly, very stereotypical – and the writing is probably on the weaker side compared to the score by Sean Callery that goes a long way towards enhancing the emotions and tension when needed.
The Marksman is a decent enough dramatic thriller that feels a little by-the-books but gains enough humanity from Neeson’s performance to make it a worthwhile watch.
Rating: 7/10
THE DIG (Netflix) Carey Mulligan and Ralph Fiennes star in this drama that takes place just before WWII with Mulligan playing a wealthy widow wo hires Fiennes’ archeologist to excavate the burial mounds on her estate in which they make a historic discovery. I like when movie titles are very literal like this one. Will be released to select cinemas before its Netflix debut on January 29.
MLK/FBI (IFC Films) Sam Pollack’s doc that’s had a successful festival run will get a small limited run as well as be available On Demand today. As the title implies, it studies the FBI’s attempts to discredit Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as his movement towards the Civil Rights Act continues to gain momentum. I didn’t like this as much as a few of Pollack’s other docs, including the recent Two Train Runnin’ and his co-directed doc, Mr Soul!

SOME KIND OF HEAVEN (Magnolia Pictures)
Lance Oppenheim’s first feature doc, co-produced by Darren Aronofsky, looks at the largest retirement community in America, the Villages in Central Florida, where a few residents are unable to find happiness despite the community’s pre-packaged paradise.
Quick Thoughts: This was a very different movie than I was expecting, since at first it seemed to thrive on the quirky personalities of the resident and their party-centric activities, but it then quickly focuses on three very particular cases, an elderly man named Dennis who is living in his van on the site of the Villages, trying to find himself a relationship (hopefully one with money). There’s also a couple who has been married for 47 years with a woman who has to deal with her husband’s ever-increasing eccentric behavior that involves drugs and troubles with the law. Lastly, there’s a widow who is trying to find happiness and companionship in the Villages, which is a particularly lonely experience as she goes from one group or club to another. All three of these stories keep the viewer invested but especially Oppenheim’s look at loneliness of people in that age group, which made it impossible for me not to think of my mother who has been suffering through the loneliness of the pandemic and not being able to be around other people her own age because of it. A terrifically insightful film that makes you think and hard about your own aging and mortality.
FLINCH (Ardor Pictures) Camron Van Hoy’s crime-thriller stars Daniel Zovatto as a young hitman who lives with his mother (Cathy Moriarty) who falls in love with a girl (Tilda Cobham-Hervey) who sees him kill someone. Since he can’t kill her, he instead brings her home and learns there’s more to her than he thought. This will ALSO be on TVOD starting on Tuesday, Jan. 21.
ACASA MY HOME (Zeitgeist, Kino Lorber) Romanian filmmaker Radu Ciorniciuc’s directorial debut doc, which premiered at Sundance last year (receiving an award for its cinematography), about the Enache family who lives in harmony with nature in the wilderness of the Bucharest Delta. When the area is turned into a public national park, they’re forced to move to the city where things are very different. It will open in select cities and via virtual cinema.
GOODBYE, BUTTERFLY (Gravitas Ventures) Tyler Wayne’s directorial debut is this crime thriller starring Adam Donshik (House of Cards) as Ryan Olsen, a family man whose five-year-old daughter is murdered, but with no leads, Ryan starts suspecting his oddball neighbor Stan (Andy Lauer), so Ryan takes the law into his own hands. This is getting day and date theatrical with TVOD (no idea what that is) and digital.
VOD:
AMERICAN SKIN Nate Parker’s second film as a director following the Sundance Prize-winning Birth of a Nation has him starring as a Marine veteran working as a school janitor who tries to fix things with his son, who is killed by a police officer who isn’t even put to trial for the death so he takes matters in his own hand. The drama also stars Omari Hardwick and will be available on iTunes and other VOD platforms.
Two of my favorite movies of 2020, Emmerald Fennell’s Promising Young Woman (Focus Features), starring Carey Mulligan, and Paul Greengrass’ News of the World (Universal), starring Tom Hanks, will be available starting today via PVOD, rentable for 48-Hour rental. These both should be in the Oscar race, so don’t miss them!
Virtual Cinema:
TRIBUTE TO SAM POLLARD Film at Lincoln Center is running a one-week retrospective to editor, producer and director Sam Pollard to tie in with the release by IFC Films of MLK/FBI, which played at the New York Film Festival last year. It will include some of his own docs (including, hopefully, the excellent Mr. Soul!), as well as his collaborations with Spike Lee, St. Clair Bourne and Henry Hampton. Hopefully, there will be a line-up as it gets closer to the series start, and I’ll add that when it becomes available.
FILM ABOUT A FATHER WHO (Cinema Guild) Over a period of 35 years between 1984 and 2019, Lynne Sachs used various media, including 8 and 16mm film, videotape and digital images to capture a portrait of her father, Ira Sachs Sr, a Park Cit, Utah businessman, in order to understand the web that connects a child to her parents and a sister to her siblings. This will open in Virtual Cinema through the Museum of the Moving Image, Laemmle and others around the country. MOMI will also be holding a  30-year virtual retrospective of Ms. Sachs’ work, starting on Jan. 13.
MY LITTLE SISTER (Film Movement) Switzerland’s official Oscar entry is Stéphanie Chuat and Véronique Reymond’s drama starring Nina Hoss (Phoenix) as Lisa, a brilliant playwright who has stopped writing and now lives with her family in Switzerland. She dreams of returning to Berlin to be with her stage acting twin brother Sven (Lars Eldinger from Proxima) who is facing an aggressive leukemia. Lisa’s attention to her brother causes a rift in her marriage, but she hopes to write something that will get Sven back on stage before the inevitable. You can find a list of theaters showing this via virtual cinema here.
THE WAKE OF LIGHT (Laemmle) Renji Phillip’s drama stars Rome Brooks as a young woman who has to choose between seeking love with Cole (Matt Bush), a young man she meets who wants her to join him on his road trip, or caring for her aging father . This will have a virtual theatrical release through Laemmle Theaters today and then be available through Digital Platforms on February 15.
MANDABI (Janus Films) Senegalese novelist and the “father of African film” Ousmne Sembène’s 1968 film about an unemployed man who finds a windfall of money will get a release through Film Forum’s Virtual Cinema.
Tumblr media
Streaming:
OUTSIDE THE WIRE (Netflix) Anthony Mackie stars in Mikael Håfström’s sci-fi thriller, playing android officer Leo who is teamed with drone pilot Harp (Damson Idris) to locate a doomsday device in a militarized zone before insurgents do.
WANDAVISION (Disney+) The long-awaited Marvel Studios television series that ties directly into the MCU, spinning-off Elisabeth Olsen’s Wanda and Paul Bettany’s Vision into their own series that seems to be playing with other dimensions and worlds but also
ONE NIGHT IN MIAMI… (Amazon Prime Video) Regina King’s powerful drama will finally stream on Prime Video, so those who haven’t had a chance to see it at a festival or awards screening or in theaters will get to see it. Woohoo!
SATURDAY, JANUARY 16
Streaming: SERVANT (Apple TV+) Season 2 of the M. Night Shyamalan produced thriller series will debut.  I hope to have some more to write about as it gets closer, since it’s currently under embargo.
******************************************
MONDAY, JANUARY 18 VOD/Digital:
STALLONE... FRANK, THAT IS (Branded Studio) Derek Wayne Johnson’s documentary takes an in-depth look into the life and career of Frank Stallone, the younger brother of the far-more-famous Sylvester Stallone, whose own four decade career has earned him three Platinum Albums, ten Gold Albums and five Gold Singles… which is odd, since I don’t think I could name a single one of his songs. He’s also done soundtracks for many of his brother’s films including The Expendables 2, the first three Rocky movies, Rambo II and more and appeared in 75 films and TV shows. Obviously, I’ll need to watch this doc to learn more about him.
YUNG LEUN: IN MY HEAD (Momento Film/Nonstop Entertainment) Henrik Burman’s doc about Swedish hip-hop artist Yung Leun aka Jonathan Leandoer, who turned his love for rap music into a career by making music on his computer and putting the results up on YouTube, but soon, the imaginary character he has been portraying starts to take over, leading to drugs and mental illness.
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 20
Virtual Cinema:
THE SALT OF TEARS (Distrib Films) Philippe Garrel’s black and white drama about toxic masculinity involving one young handsome man put amidst three vulnerable women will play as part of Film Forum’s Virtual Cinema.
FRIDAY, JANUARY 22

Theatrical:
NO MAN’S LAND (IFC Films) Conor Allyn’s thriller stars Frank Grillo as border “vigilante” Bill Greer, whose son Jackson (Jake Allyn) accidentally kills a Mexican immigrant boy while on patrol. Although Bill tries to take the blame, a Texas Ranger, played by George Lopez, urges Jackson to flee south via horseback into Mexico to hide out, chased by both rangers and Mexican federales, as he seeks forgiveness from the boy’s father (Jorge A. JIminez). Simultaneous theatrical and VOD.
FEATURED FLICK!
OUR FRIEND (Gravitas Ventures/Universal) Casey Affleck, Dakota Johnson and Jason Segel star in Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s adaptation of Matthew Teague’s novel The Friend: Love is Not a Big Enough Word (adapted by filmmaker Brad Ingelsby), which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 2019. It tells the story of the Teague family – Afleck’s Matt, a journalist, his wife Nicole (Johnson) and their two daughters – and how their life is upended when she’s diagnosed with terminal cancer, forcing Matt to take on more responsibilities as her caretaker and parent, so the couple’s friend Dane (Segel) offers to help out. FRIENDS TV SHOW – MORE THAN JUST A SHOW
Memories are captured by our brains and stored for a lifetime, good and bad. For example, the Friends tv-series gave us so many positive episodes and episodes with hardships.
Isn’t it true, it’s better to have positive memories than negative flashbacks into our past life?
The Friends tv-series taught us that memories are made up of time, the one thing we don’t get back in life is time, so, make the best of your time.
Despite the fact life throws some pretty intense trials our way, we should always use our time to help others.
In doing so, there is no room for failure in being your happiest. It’s proven when you surround yourself with good people your values are set.
In short, this means you know what you deserve and those types of friends will also be around for you when times are hard.
The quote “I would rather have a handful of best friends than just one,” is true. Why put all your eggs in one basket?
Having a handful of wonderful friends reminds me of the show FRIENDS but isn’t that the ideal group right there?

What’s the connection in specific?
Despite Ross and Rachels falling in love, out of love or “taking a break.”
Despite Joey and Chandler’s fighting of girls or a bracelet, they still talked about the problem, even if it was through a box.
Despite Chandler and Monica falling in love regardless of Chandler’s relationship fears with commitment, they still talked about the problem. They didn’t rush their marriage and even met in the middle when it came to spending money on their wedding (although, we all know it was totally Monica’s thunderous day).

Despite Joey and Rachel having a fling of confusion. Ross was upset but again, they still talked out the problem.
Despite Phoebe’s pagan like persona, they still loved her for who she was because she was tough, yet she would give the shirt off her back in a heartbeat (I mean, she even made Monica a whole new frame, lol).
In turn, we learned to lean on one another and hopefully how to love new people who come into our lives.

Remember the episode where Pheobeand Monica “cut out,” friends as they began to go through college?
It was called ‘The One with Ross’s Tan’ which is the third episode of the tenth season of Friends (which aired on October 9, 2003).
Further, Phoebe and Monica’s old roommate, Amanda, who is hands down a “New Yorker,” from Yonkers but this time, she’s picked up a British accent and very ego-centric. Both Monica and Phoebe attempt to avoid Amanda without hurting her feelings.
With this in mind, it’s safe to say the two friends didn’t want toxic in their life. Even so, they were respectful and loving merely by trying not to hurt her feelings.
Honestly, those two (if it was reality) would be the best people in the world to have as a friend.
Unfortunately, Amanda’s visit also sparked a backstory for Phoebe and Monica.
In an older episode that is flashed back too, Phoebe was becoming annoyed with how “controlling and compulsive” she behaved.
Next, the episode expanded on other problems they went through while living together in Monica’s apartment.
Phoebe explains to Monica that even though she was a little compulsive, she realized that Monica was truly a nice person and she is glad she changed her mind about cutting Monica out of her life.

What does that teach us exactly?
This teaches us not to judge too harshly and too soon. It means that we give people the benefit of the doubt until we have a real mature reason to move on in life.
FRIENDS is a tv show that has endless relatable episodes but each of them shows values, love, struggle, lust, pain, and of course, comedy.
Christina Grimmie continues to change the world from heaven!
The writers and creators David Crane, Marta Kauffman, Scott Silveri, Andrew Reich, Alexa Junge, Jeff Greenstein, and Jeff Strauss are to thank. The talent they put into their writing translated to the television like magic.

Although, and I can’t believe this, there are still people out there who have not watched the show.
For the love of all things living, do it.
Just as important, laughter is the best medicine when you’re feeling down. The show truly gives a lot of comedy and relatable content.
Most of all, it gives a pretty good picture of life, having to work, make ends meet and still maintain relationships with others.

But that doesn’t change the fact that we spend more time with our phones than actually hanging out with our own family and friends.

Two Kinds of Endings
Hello to all! Nana back again and, thanks to my dear friend @happy-fazzbear-ponies2, back with hurt/comfort for a new fandom! Faz has been kind enough to get me deeply entrenched in Camp Camp, a cartoon by Rooster Teeth on YouTube. If you haven’t watched it, do, because it is everything you didn’t know you needed. This fic is canon divergent in that it assumes the events of Season 1 Episode 12 “The Order of the Sparrow” never happened.
A fair warning for this fic: it is very dark, with very heavy themes of depression, suicidal ideation, and suicide. That being said, don’t freak out too much at the ending - this is the hurt part. There will be a second part, one that has large amounts of comfort and fluff. Now, onward!
There comes a point where positivity is not enough. The inner fuel to look on the bright side of things runs out, and what’s left is . . . emptiness. Not an all-consuming darkness, or a roiling mass of bad feelings and worse thoughts, but just . . . . nothing. The zest for life is gone, and with it the desire to keep living.
So you don’t.
This was the point David reached an early morning in late August.
If he had to pinpoint a moment that pushed him over the edge, it would have to be at the campfire the previous night, when the campers were listlessly listening to his stories and songs and, when they shuffled off to bed, he was hit with the realization that in two short weeks he would be alone again. Utterly, completely alone.
He didn’t know it at the moment, but this was when he began to fall.
Gwen had taken ill earlier in the day (probably due to the expired batch of spaghetti that they had been serving for lunch the past week) and had left David to herd the campers around activities for the afternoon. It had gone about as well as could be expected – which was terribly. Max hadn’t ceased his snide remarks on David’s ineptitude (totally normal), Nikki had somehow managed to incite a stampede of elk through the camp (not unusual), and Neil had finally snapped during Marine Biology Camp and decided to lead “an actual fucking scientific investigation of this damned lake” which resulted in the campers and David having to battle a full-fledged lake monster that they disturbed (not totally unheard of). So that was a thing.
Dinner had been a disaster, with the Quartermaster having thrown out all of the (now completely rancid) spaghetti and opted instead for old military rations that were, albeit nutritious, completely and utterly tasteless. Max had had a lot to say about that.
All told, it was a tiring, trying day and David really, really, really needed a rousing round of camp songs and positivity at the end of the day. Which he didn’t get. When the campers were safely showered and in their tents asleep, David went to the kitchen instead of going to bed. There was the beginning of a cold empty knot settled in his chest that no amount of positive thinking and humming was alleviating, so he decided that if he couldn’t help himself feel better he would at least help his campers.
It took nearly an hour and a bit of doing, but David managed to find an unexpired package of pancake batter and a whole, untainted gallon of maple syrup tucked in a secret upper attic that looked suspiciously like a hideout from government officials. No matter. The kids would love the sweet syrupy goodness to brighten up their morning and start off their day on the right foot!
Whistling cheerily (and still stubbornly ignoring the fact that the cold knot had only gotten colder and tighter in his chest as he puttered around the empty camp) David set the pancake mix and the syrup on the counter and locked up for the night. He made his way back to his cabin, taking no notice of the three dark shapes sneaking to the door of the kitchen behind him.
Gwen had gone in to the hospital earlier, the stomach pains and fever having gotten worse, so David was left alone in the counselor’s cabin. The cold knot got bigger as he walked into the dark, quiet cabin and locked the door behind himself.
Hit with a sudden wave of exhaustion, David toed off his shoes and flopped onto the bed fully clothed. He buried his face in his pillow opting, for once, to let the tension of the day simply stew away inside his brain without inhibition. Probably not the best idea, but at this point the small knot of cold inside his chest (which he had a sneaking suspicion was loneliness mixed with something he didn’t want to name) was like a snowball where his heart should be and he really didn’t have the motivation to do anything about it.
This should have been a warning sign.
He didn’t heed it.
David woke to sunlight streaming through his window onto his face, a tingling emptiness in his limbs and chest, and the sound of utter chaos from outside. He had forgotten to set his alarm in his stupor the previous night. David groaned once, deeply, before pushing himself up and over to his shoes. Slipping them back on, he took a fortifying breath and opened the door.
He had to resist the urge to shut it again.
Someone, it seemed, had seen fit to use the pancake batter and syrup he had found for a prank. Campers were running around covered head to toe in sticky syrup and white powder. Ered and Preston were banging on the doors into the bathroom and showers which were, apparently, locked from the inside. Nikki had added mud to her sticky ensemble and was currently chasing Nerris and Neil around and trying to hug them. Space Kid had somehow managed to find a yellow jacket’s nest and was running, screaming at the top of his lungs, away from the bees that were stuck to the syrup coating him. David hoped to God that he wasn’t allergic. With his luck, he probably was. Nurf was trying to toss Harrison in the line of the bees. Harrison was shooting cards out of his hands to keep them at bay.
Max, to no one’s surprise, was grinning maliciously at the entire scene, devoid of pancake batter.
“Morning, Davey. Sleep well?” Max asked from where he was leaning next to David’s door.
The cold knot from the night before had gone away, and it its place was a numb, tingling sensation that was spread throughout his body. Max frowned as David walked away without even so much as a “Language, Max.”
Without cracking a smile, David snagged Space Kid and tossed him in the lake to wash the bees off. Nurf let out a huff and dropped Harrison, grumbling as he wandered into the lake as well. A swift kick to the bathroom doors broke the lock and let Ered and Preston in. They immediately turned the showers on full to rinse off. Nerris and Neil booked it in after them to escape Nikki, who wouldn’t go past the bathroom doors, opting instead to howl forlornly at her friends through the steam. David ignored the glare and muttered curses from Max and made his way to the mess hall to scrounge up something for the kids for breakfast.
It looked like it would be military rations again.
The rest of the week continued in much the same way. It took Gwen a full three days to get back from the hospital, and at many points over those days the Quartermaster disappeared to wherever the Quartermaster disappeared to, leaving David to corral the campers all by himself. Without a second pair of eyes and hands, it was utter chaos. And the numb apathy that had settled over David was not helping things at all.
On day two, Nurf managed to get a hold on one of his knives and David had to give Nerris and Preston multiple stitches each. That evening, Space Kid tried launching himself into space from the mess hall roof while David wasn’t watching and ended up with a twisted ankle. Max and Nikki turned beekeeping camp into an utter disaster, and Neil and Harrison turned physics camp into a war between science and magic. Max was worse than ever, taking advantage of David being overworked to badger him constantly about his ineptitude. By the time Gwen got back the morning of the fourth day, David was beyond exhausted and half of the camp was either covered in honey or broken boards or was slightly burned. Gwen was filled with irritation. David just felt empty.
“What the hell, David? I leave you alone for three days for a legitimate reason and the whole place is in shambles? Where’s the Quartermaster? What have you been doing?”
David had no reply to that. The numbness had settled deeply in him over the past days alone. He simply shrugged, handing Gwen the schedule he’d had planned for the day. She snatched it out of his hands; after a glance at it, she groaned loudly and stalked away to prep, muttering darkly under her breath.
The afternoon went almost impossibly smoothly with Gwen fully back in action. The kids were overjoyed to not have to deal with David’s chipper enthusiasm, it seemed (he was trying so, so hard though), and were on their best behavior. Even the Quartermaster had returned and was helping out. Everything fit together perfectly; nothing like when it had just been David to take care of things.
David felt himself shatter just a little bit more.
It was three more days before David finally broke.
Things had gone to even better than normal with Gwen back – the time away from camp (away from David, his brain supplied) had been good for her and she seemed revitalized. The kids latched on to it and took to antagonizing her instead – even Max was outright ignoring David in favor of getting a rise out of Gwen. No one seemed to notice David growing quieter, less cheerful, less . . . himself. The numb apathy was getting harder and harder to put up a front for.
So he didn’t.
And nothing changed.
So a week before camp was over, on a Friday morning, David began prepping.
He got up early (earlier than usual; he was always awake before everyone else) and cleaned his room until it was perfect. He pulled an empty box out from under his bed and carefully collected all the knickknacks and pictures and sentimental items scattered about his room into it. No reason to make things harder on everyone else. He pulled out a pen, paper, and envelope but hesitated, then tucked it under his pillow. He would save the letter for later.
David wouldn’t be able to face everyone after he said goodbye, and he had a last day to make perfect.
And he did.
The chipper, carefree, lively David was back. He threw himself into the camp activities with a gusto he hadn’t shown for over a week now. He sang, and laughed, and he even broke his professional attitude to help Nikki prank Max and Neil with water balloons (Max responded by stealing his bandana, but David let him keep it; he wouldn’t need it soon). Gwen even relented and let him pull out his guitar to sing campfire songs after dinner; he took requests from the kids and surprisingly everyone was rather into it (well, into critiquing David’s singing and guitar skills, but at least they weren’t apathetic about the whole thing!).
All told, it was a rather perfect last day.
Then it came time to say goodbye.
David’s hands started shaking the moment he put the guitar down after the last song. They kept shaking as he walked the kids to the bathrooms so they could get ready for bed. He was able to get the trembling under control before they got done – he had to do this right.
Nikki was the first one out of the bathroom as usual. She dashed outside and howled at the moon, running circles around David and Gwen while she waited for Max and Neil to get done. David let a smile break across his face – he would break instead if he didn’t – and reached out to pat her head as she ran past.
“Good night, Nikki.”
The blue-haired girl shrieked at the contact and laughed, running off towards the flagpole to run laps around it instead.
Space Kid and Nerris were the next two out.
He patted each of them on the head as well and wished them goodnight, Nerris complaining that he was going to mess up her elf ears but giving him a grin nonetheless. Space Kid surprised David by giving him a quick hug around the knees. David almost broke then.
Almost.
Harrison and Preston were next out, followed quickly by Dolph and Ered. Quarters fell out of Harrison’s hair when David mussed it; he laughed and flicked them up for David to catch. Preston launched into a monologue about the pleasant wishes goodnight being a masked goodbye (David would have been worried Preston knew something if the kid wasn’t literally there for Drama Camp). Dolph gave him a hug too, and a cheery “gute nacht” along with it. Ered just fluffed her hair and gave a breezy “good night” before drifting away.
Nurf and, surprisingly, Neil were next out, somehow having got into a discussion about one of the songs David had played. As unusual as a positive interaction between the two was, the numbness in David thawed just a little at the sight. Neil rolled his eyes at David’s cheery affection and gave a half-hearted wave; Nurf surprised him with a handshake goodnight and good wishes for slumber. It was a night of firsts and lasts indeed.
Then there was only Max.
The cold knot in David’s chest returned at the sight of his favorite camper. This is it, camp-man. Last time he has to put up with you. Make it count. David stood still as Max walked past him, bright green eyes not sparing him a glance – Max was either too tired or too irritated to even taunt David. As Max got further and further away, David felt a little like he was collapsing in on himself. Just as Max got to the door of his tent, David started forward and called out to him.
“Max! Wait!”
The curly haired boy turned around, expression of absolute disgust on his features. David’s fake smile faltered for just a split second before he plastered it back on. He jogged up to the boy and squatted down in front of him.
“What the fuck do you want, David? If you haven’t noticed, I’m trying to go to sleep and enter the sweet oblivion of nighttime to escape the hellhole that is this camp,” Max said, crossing his arms with a smug look on his face. The smug look was replaced with confusion as David wrapped him up in a quick, tight hug.
“What the fuck man!?” Max yelled, pushing him away.
“Good night, Max,” David said, then he stood up and walked away without looking back, leaving a very puzzled Max staring after him. A few moments later, Max wandered back into his tent mumbling about “fucking weird-ass counselors not knowing personal space preferences.”
Gwen was already back in her room in the counselor’s cabin. David could hear the sounds of trash t.v. playing lightly from her room. Still playing the part, David went through his usual routine – change into pine tree patterned pajamas, brush his teeth in their shared bathroom, knock on Gwen’s door to say goodnight. David cautiously opened her door and poked his head in – it was out-of-the-norm behavior, but he wanted to give her a proper goodbye.
Gwen glanced up from her tablet for a second or two to meet his eyes, then flicked them back down to her show with a grunt of acknowledgement. David took that as permission to enter her room. Before he could lose his nerve, he walked over to her, bent down, and gave her a quick hug.
“Good night, Gwen,” he said, giving her a tight squeeze.
“What the hell, David?” she squawked, but as soon as the hug started it was over and he was walking back out of her room. She stared at the closed door for a few seconds. That had been . . . odd. But probably a good thing, right? More like normal David and less like . . . empty David from the past week. Yeah. It was a good thing.
Gwen went back to her show, worries melting away in the convoluted plot of trash t.v., and in the room next to her David sat down to finish a letter.
Even to the end, David didn't want the kids to be sad or to be hurt because of him. He wasn’t worth it. So what better way than to disappear completely? They would be traumatized and scared of the forest if he got himself killed by a wild animal or threw himself off a cliff, and he couldn't bear the thought of them finding him hanging in the mess hall or his cabin or the woods, or bled out in the showers or the kitchen. No, he had thought about this thoroughly. Resigning himself to the bottom of the lake to be eaten by fish and parasites was where he belonged.
When the kids and Gwen were well and truly asleep (even the Devil Trio) David made his way out to the dock and to the rowboat there waiting for him. It was nothing unusual for David to prep camp activities days in advance, so no one had questioned when he had brought out the rowboat while prepping for the afternoon session and never used it.
It would serve a different purpose.
David hadn’t bothered to put on shoes or socks again after getting into his pajamas earlier (necessary, since Gwen would question him not getting ready for bed like normal and he desperately, desperately wanted everything to seem like it was normal).
So numb feet found their way into the rough bottom of the boat, and numb hands threw off the rope on the dock. Numb arms pulled back and forth on the single oar, numb eyes guiding the vessel out to the middle of the lake. It was deep here, fathoms and fathoms down, and the water was cold even in the middle of the summer and murky.
David took a deep breath.
And threw the oar as far from himself as possible.
It landed with a splash somewhere in the vicinity of Spooky Island. David simply sat in the boat for a full hour, mind empty, staring back at the faint outline of Camp Campbell in the moonlight. At some point he laid down in the boat, lanky limbs sprawled along the floor as he curled up. He knew how the next part went, but somehow he couldn’t quite bring himself to do it. He had even made it as easy for himself as possible – all he had to do was pull the plug from the floor of the rowboat and let the water do the rest. The innocuous orange stopper sat right by his head and hands, a constant reminder. Tick tock, camp man. Decision time has already passed. You said goodbye. Time to make good.
Several hours later, as the sun started to rise, David still lay shivering in the bottom of the boat.
Gwen was beyond peeved when she pounded on David’s door in the morning and he didn’t answer. The cheerful counselor was always the first up, and – though she would never admit it – she relied on his timeliness as her alarm clock. Why wake up earlier than necessary (or to anything other than a friendly smile, but like hell she would let anyone know that) when the walking ball of sunshine was completely willing to be her alarm clock? Which backfired when, apparently, he slept through his own alarm and left her up a half hour later than all the campers and with no breakfast or activities prepped. David was so getting an earful for this.
“David! Open this fucking door! We were supposed to be awake an hour ago and I’m not dealing with this mess by myself!” she hollered.
When Gwen tried the door handle and it swung open to reveal an empty room, the anger subsided a bit into something uncomfortably like worry. That was . . . unusual. She had expected to see David snoring in his bed, so exhausted by some stupid nighttime bonding adventure he snuck off to do, or by some prank of Max’s, that he had slept through his alarm.
Instead, she was met with a neatly made bed that looked like it hadn’t been slept in, a box of pictures and knickknacks on the desk, and a letter addressed to her resting on David’s pillow. In fact, everything about the room was unnaturally pristine, like the owner had wanted it to be at its most presentable. Clothes hung neatly in the closet and were tucked away in drawers. No dust settled on any surface; even the desk chair was tucked in. The uncomfortable feeling of worry building in Gwen’s chest was full-blown anxiety now. Scenes from yesterday played through her mind on fast forward – David suddenly cheerful again, David breaking counselor conduct to have fun, David leaving his bandana with Max, David saying good night goodbye. Warning bells were ringing in her head, but she couldn’t tell why (but in hindsight, she knew exactly what it all meant, she just couldn’t believe it of David).
Gwen felt mildly numb as she walked over to David’s bed and picked up the letter. She didn’t know when her hands had started shaking. It wasn’t sealed shut, the lip of the envelope tucked neatly inside it. Gwen drew out a single piece of paper with David’s neat scrawl lined across it. Her breathing sped up the further she got down it; by the end of the letter she was nearly hyperventilating, and she lost no time in bolting out of the cabin and yelling at the top of her lungs for Max and the Quartermaster.
Dear Gwen,
I want to say thank you for everything. Thank you for putting up with my stupid, idealistic nature. Thank you for putting up with my naïve positivity and love for this ridiculous camp. You have been nothing but reliable to me and a dear, dear friend, and I – I’ve been nothing but a burden to you. To everyone. No one really wants to be here except for me, and after this summer I don’t think I even want to be here either. Which is a big thing, considering this camp is my life. I just can’t do all this anymore. I know that now. I’m sorry to do this to you right now, but we’re less than a week away from the end of camp and . . . and I’m too much of a coward to go when I’m all alone again. I’m sorry. I know this is the worst thing for me to do, and I understand completely if you hate me for doing this. Tell the campers that they should always strive to be the best selves that they can be, to keep trying. To never give up. I want you to tell them that and say it’s from you, because that would be pretty damn hypocritical of me to say, wouldn’t it? . . . You don’t have to explain what happened to me. Just tell them I left early for a family emergency or something. They won’t care once they head home. You won’t find me, I’ll make sure of it. I couldn’t do that to them, to you. I wish I could have been better, been stronger, been . . . enough. But I’m not. Thank you, Gwen, for everything.
Love,
David
Camp Campbell was in an uproar the whole day.
Gwen had come barreling into the mess hall in the midst of chaos led by Max and the rest of the Devil Trio. Max had opened his mouth to taunt the counselor but was interrupted by Gwen grabbing him by the shoulders.
“Has anyone seen David!? When was the last time anyone saw him?” she asked, shaking him. David’s yellow bandana was tied around Max’s shoulders and Gwen nearly burst into tears at the sight of it.
“Whoa whoa whoa, calm the fuck down. He steal your fanfic or something, Gwen?” Max smirked at her.
“No you fucking idiot, he left a suicide note on his pillow and I think he’s trying to kill himself,” she hissed, voice absolutely poisonous. The entire room went silent.
Then Max laughed.
“You’ve gotta be shitting me. That ball of sunshine? Why would he-“ and he was cut off as Gwen shoved David’s letter in his face. He huffed before snagging it and scanning down the neat letters. Max’s eyes grew wider and wider as he read. “Holy shit,” he breathed at the end. He looked up and met Gwen’s eyes. She simply nodded, face grim. Max straightened up, and the room snapped to attention.
“Okay, listen up you ignorant fucks! David either killed himself in the last few hours or is going to try to soon. He might be an insufferable, naïve ball of sunshine, but he’s our insufferable naïve ball of sunshine. So now it’s our job to take care of him. Track him down and bring him back!” A shout went up through the campers and the Quartermaster and everyone scattered to search.
Everyone except Max and Gwen.
Max gripped the note tightly in his hands, eyes still fixed on the last few lines, reading them over and over and over again like they held some secret clue. Max jumped as a hand settled on his shoulder. He looked up at Gwen, the briefest bit of fear and grief in his eyes. She tugged him into a quick hug before murmuring into his hair. “We’ll find him, Max. We’ll find him.”
He didn’t find that phrasing particularly reassuring.
It was noon before someone remembered David taking the rowboat out to the dock the previous day, and it took another half hour before they had found sufficiently safe canoes and rowboats to go out on the lake. No one said the obvious the whole time – if David had drowned himself in the lake, there was very little chance that they would ever find a body. The lake was unnaturally deep and extremely murky and cold. They could be looking at a whole week of fruitless searching before being forced to give up.
Max, Nikki, and Neil sat in a rowboat with Gwen, while the rest of the campers were scattered in canoes across the rest of the lake. They had been told to shout for help if they found anything. Lake Lilac was not a small lake; after an hour of searching they were growing disheartened.
Until Max spotted a familiar rowboat drifting near a log in the center of a deep inlet at the back of the lake.
Theirs was the only boat in the area, so Nikki sent up a shout across the lake and Neil sent up a flare. Max and Gwen wasted no time in rowing towards the boat, everyone in the boat shouting out for David. The closer they drew to the boat the more their hopes dropped – there didn’t seem to be anyone in it. And if there was no one in it, then that meant that David had already . . .
Wait, movement!
A tuft of red hair followed by a pale face peeked over the side of the boat. They were still too far away from him to make out any detailed expression, but the familiar face was soon gone. And with its disappearance the four in the rowboat came to an unnerving realization – there was significantly less of the rowboat that they could see than seconds before.
It was sinking.
And taking David with it.
It was afternoon before David drew up the courage to do it.
Laying in the cold bottom of a rowboat all night had left him shivering and miserable. He told himself it was because he wanted to watch his last sunrise; after that he would pull the plug. The sun came up, and the rowboat stayed above the water. The sun crept higher and higher in the sky, parching David with its heat and light and leaving him dizzy but still he didn’t move. David stayed curled up on the floor of the rowboat until a jolt shook the boat – he had drifted far out of the center of the lake and into a deep inlet. His progress had been stopped by a sturdy tree trunk sticking out of the water. David looked around but couldn’t see Camp Campbell from where he was. Everything had gone a bit fuzzy for him and sound was distorted – it looked like there were other boats on the lake, but why would that be? No one would be looking for him. They wouldn’t know where to look anyway.
He slid back down to the bottom of the boat (sitting up had made his head spin) and, before he could talk himself out of it again, pulled the plug. Cold water bubbled up in the bottom of the boat. David laid his head back down on the rough boards as the water rose. He could feel the boat shifting around him as it took on water, could hear – yelling? Someone yelling his name? – over the rushing, and then the boat was tipping over and he was plunging into the lake. He caught a glimpse of a boat a few meters away, and met a pair of panicked bright green eyes for a moment. He was so surprised to see Max that he took a deep breath to shout out to him – but inhaled a lungful of water instead of air.
Then he was underwater and sinking.
Drowning was a lot like the cold knot in his chest. It was painful, and it burned, and it felt like that was all there was in the world. The light dimmed around David as he sank, limbs too tired and dehydrated to move properly, and mind too heavy with despair to keep him afloat. So he struggled feebly, futilely, and sank.
The last thought he had before he passed out was that maybe, just maybe, this meant he wouldn’t feel so empty anymore.
When David’s boat sank under the surface and into the lake, there was a split second before he slipped under the water that his eyes and Max’s eyes met. And Max knew, in that moment, what exactly David had meant in his letter. He saw resignation, and emptiness, and defeat, and, worst of all – hope. David wasn’t coming back up out of that lake. At least, not by himself.
Max didn’t spare a second thought as he yelled out "FUCK YOU DAVID, YOU DON'T GET TO LEAVE ME TOO!" while tying a rope around himself. They were nearly on top of where David had sunk now. Nikki and Neil knew what he was thinking a split second before Gwen did. She only got out a “Max, wait!” before he was diving in after his stupid, fucked-up, idiotic, naïve, wonderful, broken . . . friend.
The lake was freezing, and got dark almost immediately as Max dove down, down, down. He hoped against hope that he’d be able to find – there he was! A hazy patch of red with pale underneath turned into David’s lax face as Max caught up with the slowly sinking body counselor. He wrapped his arms and legs around David in a bear hug and gave the rope attached to himself a quick tug. Almost instantly, the rope pulled taut and the two of them were floating upwards through the water. But it was slow going. Max’s head was starting to hurt from the lack of air. He must have been under for at least a minute and a half by now – David, well over three. Max pressed his ear against David’s chest, trying to hear a heartbeat over the pounding in his own head.
He couldn’t hear anything.
Then they were breaking the surface of the water and hands were pulling them both into the boats that had joined them and paddling to shore. Hands pulled him off of David and into another boat. A small part of Max knew it was because David was drowned and needed CPR, but a much larger part was screaming to fucking give him back to me, what are you doing, I have to save him. Which, in truth, he was screaming out loud. Not even a minute later the canoes and rowboat were beached, and Gwen was pressing her mouth to David’s and pumping his chest to get his heart moving. Max scrambled over to David’s side, ignoring the lake water streaming down his face from his eyes. David was unmoving and so, so pale.
So Max did the only thing he knew how to do well.
"WHO'S GONNA BE OBNOXIOUSLY POSITIVE ALL THE TIME?” he screamed. “WHO'S GOING TO FORCE A LAUGH WHEN EVERYTHING'S GONE TO SHIT, AND SOMEHOW GET EVERYTHING TO WORK OUT RIGHT?"
Gwen didn’t break her rhythm as Max yelled. The other campers quietly gathered around, unwilling and perhaps too fearful to break in on the moment.
"WHO'S GONNA CARE ABOUT ALL OF US CAMPERS EVEN THOUGH WE ONLY MAKE YOUR LIFE HELL? HUH DAVID? WHO'S GONNA BE THE GOD-AWFUL BALL OF SUNSHINE THAT THE WORLD NEEDS?" Max was outright sobbing now. At some point he had grabbed the cold hand lying on the sand in front of him and was squeezing it tightly between his own small hands. It was so, so cold and so, so still.
“FUCKING HELL, DAVID, YOU WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT! DON’T . . . sob . . . don’t die. Please,” Max ended in a whisper. Gwen didn’t stop her resuscitation. She had an iron determination in her usually careless face that Max understood implicitly. No way in hell was she giving up on David, not after he had given up on himself.
“David, David, you gotta come back to us. You idiotic camp man, you can’t just leave us to our own devices. You remember what happened the last time you left Nikki unsupervised? Or Nerris? You think Gwen can keep this camp together? Give me a break!” Max let out a near-hysterical laugh. Someone else let out a half-laugh, half-sob. Another breath from Gwen. David still showed no signs of life.
“David, please. Please don’t . . . don’t leave us. Don’t leave me. We need you, you naïve piece of shit. We . . . we’ll miss you too damn much if you go.” Max trailed off, a cold weight settling heavier and heavier in his chest and in his gut. The cold hand in his still hadn’t moved. It had been a solid two minutes since they had gotten to shore, and David hadn’t taken a single breath or twitched a muscle in that time. A broken sob, deeper and more painful than any before, worked its way out of Max.
David was gone.

Zoey grinned as she led a blindfolded Max into the backyard.
“Zo, what is this?” Max asked, confused.
“You’ll see,” she teased.
“Kind of hard to do with a blindfold on,” he chuckled.
Zoey stuck her tongue out at him, forgetting that he couldn’t see her.
They came to a stop. “Okay you can look now!”
Max pulled the blindfold off.
“HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!” Everyone yelled.
He looked around the backyard in shock. Zoey and her family were there, Mo was over towards the back with his DJ setup. Even Leif, Joan and Tobin were there.
“Wha? What is this?” he looked at Zoey confused.
Zoey couldn’t keep the grin off her face. “It’s your birthday party, silly! I know we usually do a low-key party with just us, but I thought we might try something different this year.”
Max was speechless, she had put all this together for him!
Zoey bit her lip nervously, “I mean if that’s okay with you….cause if not I can send everyone home...and then we can….”
Max pulled her into a hug stopping her babbling. “Zoey, this is amazing. No one has ever done anything like this for me before.”
Zoey smiled, “Happy Birthday, Max.”
Max kissed her forehead and grinned, waving at everyone around them.
“Okay, it’s time somebody got this party started!” Mo announced from his booth. “Happy Birthday, Max. his one’s for you!” Mo winked his way and began playing “Sucker.”
Max looked at Zoey confused, she was bright red and making the “cut” signal at Mo who pretended not to see her.
“Why is this song for me?” Max asked Zoey.
“Is it warm, or is it just you...I mean me?” Zoey blurted out fanning herself with her hands.
Max looked at her concerned, “Let’s get you a drink.” He steered her towards the coolers and grabbed a water for her.
She took a large drink and sighing in relief.
“You good?” Max asked.
Zoey let out an awkward laugh, “Yeah, yeah totally.”
Max looked like he wasn’t convinced, but before he could press her further Maggie, David and Emily came over to join them.
“Happy Birthday, sweetie,” Maggie said, giving him a hug.
“Thanks Maggie. This is amazing!”
“Well it’s all thanks to Zoey,” David said slapping him on the back. “She did all the arranging and planning, we just had to show up.”
Max looked at Zoey as she blushed, “Mom helped with the decorations,” she mumbled.
Emily gave him a one armed hug, holding Peter on her hip.
“Can you tell Max Happy Birthday?” she asked Peter.
He looked at Max with wide eyes and smiled.
Max smiled back, “A smile for me? Best birthday present ever buddy!” He leaned over and gave Peter a kiss on the head.
David bumped Zoey’s shoulder and raised his eyebrows at her.
“Shut up,” she said through clenched teeth.
Emily grabbed David’s arm, “Come on hon, I think Peter needs to be changed.”
“I just changed him a few minutes…” David started to say when he caught Emily’s significant look. “Right new diaper, sure, whatever you say.”
Maggie shook her head as she watched them walk towards the house.
“Well come on birthday boy, let's get you something to eat!” Zoey said. The three of them headed towards the buffet table that was set up.
Tobin was already there loading up his plate. “Hey bro, happy birthday!” he greeted Max.
Max grinned, “Thanks man, glad you’re here.”
“And miss this food? You must be joking.” Tobin teased.
Maggie raised her eyebrows at his plate, “Are you really going to be able to eat all of that?” she asked, morbid curiosity getting the better of her.
“What, all this?” Tobin gestured to his plate. “This is nothing.”
Maggie looked at Zoey and Max who nodded their heads in agreement. “By Tobin standards that’s a fairly small portion.”
“Come on I’ll show you the good stuff,” Tobin took Maggie’s arm and guided her down the table.
Max and Zoey grabbed their plates and went to find a table to sit at.
"I can't believe you did all of this for me," Max said looking at her in awe.
"Are you kidding of course I did! You're my best friend, and you are amazing and wonderful and deserve all the good things!" Zoey exclaimed.
Max grinned at her. "Well this is definitely the best surprise birthday party I've ever had."
Zoey rolled her eyes "It's the only one you've ever had."
"And it will always be the best because you did it for me," he said sincerely.
Zoey blushed. "Max there's something I want to talk to you about," she started.
"Sure Zo, you can talk to me about anything," he looked at her earnestly.
Zoey fiddled with the paper napkin in her hands. "So you see….the thing is...lately I've been thinking…"
"Okay everyone! Let's get the birthday boy on the floor to start some dancing!" Mo interrupted.
Zoey let out a huff of annoyance.
"What do you say Zoey? Dance with me?" Max asked, holding out his hand.
Zoey smiled, and placed her hand in his as he led her to the dance floor.
They spent hours dancing, chatting with everyone and having a great time.
Zoey carried out his birthday cake, the candles giving her face a soft glow.
Everyone loudly and obnoxiously sang "Happy Birthday," to his chagrin.
"Go on Max, make a wish," Zoey said, holding the cake for him to blow out the candles.
He looked at her smiling, and he knew exactly what he would wish for. He took a deep breath and blew out the candles.
As evening fell, the party began to wind down and their guests began to take their leave.
Soon only Mo, Zoey and Max were the only ones left.
Mo looked at Zoey and gesturing with his head towards Max.
Zoey smiled and nodded.
"One more dance birthday boy?" Zoey asked.
Max grinned tiredly, "With you, of course."
Zoey wrapped her arms around Max's neck and began to sway side to side with him.
Mo cued the music. It wasn't a song one would normally slow dance to, but Zoey and Max stood there on the floor alone slowly dancing with one another.
Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am home again
Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am whole again
Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am young again
Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am fun again
Zoey sighed contentedly and lay her head on Max's shoulder.
However far away
I will always love you
However long I stay
I will always love you
Whatever words I say
I will always love you
I will always love you
"So what was it you wanted to tell me earlier?" Max murmured.
Zoey lifted her head to look at him and smiled.
"What?" Max asked.
"I'm just happy," she replied, her eyes sparkling with joy.
"You are?" Max said.
She nodded. "I am, because I finally realized something."
"And what's that?"
"How much I love you," she replied.
Max stopped dancing and stared at her.
"You what?" He whispered.
"I lo…" Zoey was cut off as his lips descended on hers. She smiled as she kissed him back, wrapping her arms around his neck pulling him closer to her. His lips moved softly against hers, savoring the feeling and taste of her. She moaned against his mouth allowing his tongue access.
Max felt a chair bump against his legs. He didn't even stop to think how a chair had gotten onto the dance floor. Not breaking the kiss he sat, pulling her with him down onto his lap.
They broke apart breathing heavily. Neither noticing Mo walking away from them with a grin on his face.
Zoey smiled at him, running her hand through his hair as she looked at the man she loved.
"Tell me again," he whispered, staring at her as though she was the answer to everything in the universe
Zoey giggled, "I love you, Max."
Max let out a shuddering breath, "God, I love you so much Zoey."
She grinned giving him a soft peck on the lips. "So best birthday ever?"
Max chuckled, "Far and beyond." He grinned at her, "Do you know what I wished for when I blew out the candles?"
Zoey shook her head.
"This," he said, pulling her into another kiss.

Your Wednesday Morning Roundup
Let me start out with the following: Hector Neris sucks. I’m not a fan of him. I thought he turned a corner late last season, but that has not appeared to be the case. Sorry.
Anyways, it looked like the Phillies were going to blow a one-run lead after a 22 minute rain delay. The Phils led 6-1 after the bottom of the 2nd, but the Dodgers accumulated runs for the rest of the game until being down just one entering the ninth.
That’s when Max Muncy hit a three-run homer to give LA a two-run advantage. And in what felt like something from Major League, Neris hit David Freese with a pitch and was ejected. So was Gabe Kapler one night after Yacksel Rios was tossed.
But there was optimism in the bottom half of the inning. Andrew Knapp pinch hit again, and got a double. Incredible. Cesar Hernandez singled and Scott Kingery brought home Knapp on an RBI single. It was a one-run game for Bryce Harper, who for the first time as a Phillie, walked things off.

An unreal ending and a pretty damn wild game if you ask me. Could it help jolt the struggling Phillies toward a playoff spot? With two weeks left, will Matt Klentak or John Middleton make any big moves to help this team? Klentak and Andy MacPhail reportedly got three-year extensions as well, per The Athletic.
We shall see. But for the time being, the two teams play again tonight at 7:05 PM on NBC Sports Philadelphia. Nick Pivetta takes the mound against Kenta Maeda.

season 1 episode 1
Uncle Phil! Man! How are you doing? l am not your uncle Philip. My fault, man. l must have got the wrong crib. l didn't know there were so many brothers living in this neighborhood. We're doing all right, huh? You have the right house. l am Geoffrey, your uncle's butler. Okay, well, l. Cheerio and all that rot. Bring the horses round, would you? lf you will follow me l will show you to your room, Master William. Hey, man, it's cool if you just call me Will. Master William tradition dictates that a clean, unbreakable line be drawn between a family and their butler. Therefore, it is necessary for the operation of a household that you address me as Geoffrey and l, in turn, address you by your proper title: Master William. Who are you, Robo-butler, man? Come with me, Master William. Yo, G. Let me rap to you for a second. All this Master William stuff, l'm not down with that, man. Make it sound like we're back on the plantation, like: ''Massa William ! Massa William ! '' Let's come up with something better that you could call me. What would you prefer? Check this: ''His Royal Freshness. '' That's dope. Master William, walk this way. No. -Willie! -Hey, Aunt Viv! -Sweetie, hi. -How you doing? My goodness, let me look at you. Turn around. The last time we saw you, you were this funny little boy. Now look at you. My goodness, you are a man. That was the plan. lt is amazing. You certainly have grown, Will. Well, we all have. Did you enjoy the trip? The plane ride was stupid. All the way first-class-- Excuse me? -l'm saying the plane was dope-- -Excuse me? No. Stupid, dope. No, that doesn't mean what you. How would he say. The flight was really neat. Geoffrey, would you take Will to his room, and help him get settled in? -Yes, Madam. -Nice seeing you. -Master William. -You got to love this guy, right? -Did you see the way he was dressed? -What's wrong with it? -You hear that language? -We used slang when we were kids. Do you remember our first date? You took one look at me and said: ''That is a bad dress. '' You could've just said it was a good dress. l could have, if l liked it. Actually, it was a bad dress. That's stupid. Now, take it for whatever meaning you want. Now he's got you doing it. Philip, cut him some slack, please. He's my nephew. And l would just appreciate it if you would try to understand him. Hi, Mom. Hi, Dad. -Hi, sweetie pie. -Hi, Ashley. Yo, this place is huge, man. Next time l go to my room, l'm gonna take some bread crumbs. -Will, this is Ashley. -Hi. My little Scottish cousin. Pleased to make your acquaintance. l'm your humble servant. -He's cute. -l know he is. -l'm gonna take a swim before dinner. -Good luck. The pool heater's broken. -Don't you just hate it when that happens? -Yes, that is my pet peeve. -You got your own pool here? -And a tennis court, too. Yo, this is better than Love Boat. This boy gonna be maxing and relaxing. Hold on just a minute, son. We promised your mother that you're here to work hard, straighten out and learn some good old-fashioned American values. Dad, l need $300. Hilary, your cousin Will is here. Hi. Dad, l need $300. That's a lot of money, Hilary. What for? l need a new hat. -For what? -Probably her head. Okay, l'm going on the Save the Ozone celebrity bus next Saturday. lt's gonna be Bruce Willis and Demi, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez or Charlie Sheen, l can't remember which. We're taking the bus all over town to protest air pollution and then we're gonna motor to the beach and have a big bonfire. What? l'm not an expert or anything, but don't you think driving a big old bus around town and then having a bonfire is sort of adding to the problem of pollution? Look, if this weren't a good idea l really don't think Ally Sheedy would be involved. Hey, look who's here. Benson. -This is for you. -But l didn't get you anything. Your uncle has invited several of the partners from his law firm to dinner. At the time of the invitation, he did not realize you'd be descending upon him today. And regrettably, it was too late to cancel. Yo, are we having a party? We're gonna get stupid, right? For some of us, that will require very little effort indeed. -Miss Ashley. -That will be all, Geoffrey. That's all you had to say to get rid of him? l've been racking my brain. -This is for you. -Thank you, Ashley. This is nice. You're very talented. Well, l'm glad l'm good at something. l tried out for the school chorus today, but l didn't get in. How come? Well, when l auditioned for Mrs. Berkley l couldn't remember all the words to the song. The part l remembered was fantastic. -l'm sure it was. l bet you're def. -That's what she said. Not deaf. D-E-F. That's just slang. Means terrific, good. Thank you. You should try rapping. When you're rapping, you mess up the words and make up some new ones right there on the spot. Let's try this. l'll sing one line, you make up a line to rhyme it. -Okay. -All right. Let's see. ''You didn't get into Miss Berkley's chorus'' -l'm thinking, all right? -That's all right. We got all day. -Okay, l've got it. -Here we go. ''You didn't get into Miss Berkley's chorus'' ''l'd like to hit her in the head with Roget's Thesaurus'' ''Don't need no choir when you're a rapper'' ''Gonna hunt Miss Berkley down and zap her'' ''Got this whole town of Bel-Air buzzing'' ''Get a load of me and my rapping cousin'' Ashley, why don't you go downstairs and get ready for dinner. -Okay, Daddy. Bye, Will. -Check you later, Ash. Look who's here, Will. Who is he? lt's your cousin, Carlton. Don't you remember? When you two were little, people thought you were twins. You looked exactly alike. l guess some things never change. -How's it going there, Will? -lt's going all right. -Malcolm X. -He's sort of my hero. Well, he was a great man. l don't know if l'd call him my hero exactly. -Really? Who are your heroes? -Well, my dad. And Bryant Gumbel. He's darn good. Oh, my, yes! l see they brought your tuxedo. Tell me something, Will. Have you ever attended a formal dinner before? Other than that thing at Buckingham Palace, no. The important thing to remember is to relax, enjoy yourself and when in doubt, do whatever Carlton's doing. -You got it, man. -Okay, l'll see you at dinner. -That's a really neat tux, isn't it, Will? -Yes. lt's definitely the cat's meow. Wait till we come downstairs in those tuxes. People may not think we're twins, but l bet they'll think we're brothers. l don't think you have to worry about anybody mistaking you for a brother. Touche. This is going to be great. Your first formal dinner. And tomorrow, l'll introduce you to the gang. Maybe we'll play a set of tennis or two. Yes, this is going to be wild. -Where is he? -He's upstairs changing. Not Will. President Reagan. -You didn't? -What do you mean, l didn't? -You invited him again. -Why not? He's our neighbor. He's turned down the last 16 invitations. When are you gonna take a hint? -Maybe l should call his house. -Don't. l don't want him here. -Why not? -Because he'll bring her. Anyway, Bruce, Demi and l all feel that the ozone layer must be protected. l mean, every square foot of rain forest that's cut down brings us just one step closer to global warming. We have to learn to protect the earth. Not just for ourselves and not just for our children but for the future of all mankind. l had no idea it was such a serious problem. l really commend you for getting involved in such a good cause. Thanks. lt's my passion. -Where can l send a donation? -l don't know. Oh, my God! Philip, don't make a big thing out of it. lf this is how he feels comfortable. He's not killing anybody. Aren't you going to introduce Will? lntroduce him. Well, Steve, David, Henry. This is Will, my nephew by marriage. Will, these are my partners in the law firm of Furth, Winn and Meyer. Earth, Wind & Fire! When's your next album coming out? Will is going to go to Bel-Air Academy with Carlton. Good for you, Will. l used to fence at Bel-Air. Really? How much do you think we could get for that stereo? These hors d'oeuvres look tempting. Don't mind if l do. -How could you do that? -lt's all in the tongue. l'll show you later. There are other people at this table. You're right. Any requests? -Sweetie, would you say grace, please? -Yes, Mommy. ''Hey, there, Lord My name is Ashley Banks ''My family and friends Want to give you some thanks ''So before this dinner's All swallowed and chewed ''Thank you, God, for this stupid food'' Hey, Geoffrey, home butler. l'm glad to see you, man. lt is a special thrill for me as well. Check this out. l'm gonna be down here for a while. Why don't you hop on in the kitchen and get me some cocoa? Master William while it is my natural inclination to accede to your every demand l officially go off duty at 9:00 p. m. And if you care to look at your watch, you will note that the long hand is on 12, and the short hand is on 9. lt is 9:00, Master William. And do you know what that means? Masterpiece Theatre is on. Sir, do you require anything further of me? No, Geoffrey. Then l shall retire. Man, he took that hard. l want to talk to you. -About what? -You know. From the minute you came, you've been a one-man wrecking crew trying to tear down what's taken a lot of hard work to build up skewering everything with your flippant shenanigans! Man, l was with you up till ''skewering. '' You know what l'm talking about. You deliberately tried to embarrass me tonight and l don't get it. Your aunt and l went through a lot of trouble to bring you here. -This is the thanks we get? -l ain't asked to come. Everyone's talking about shipping me off, and dressing me up and changing me into something l don't wanna be. Nobody wants to change you. You told me yourself l got to straighten out. ''When in doubt, act as Carlton acts. '' Man, l don't wanna be like Carlton. l'm a joker. l play around. l have fun. Being a joker is what's gotten you into trouble. You may think it's cool to be on the streets when you're 17 but when you're my age, it's a waste. l can't think that far ahead. That's your problem. You can't take anything seriously. Look, man, l don't have the problem. You have the problem. l remind you of where you came from and what you used to be. l don't know, somewhere between Princeton or the office, you got soft. You forgot who you are and where you came from. You think you're so wise. Look at me when l'm talking to you. Let me tell you something, son. l grew up on the streets just like you. l encountered bigotry you could not imagine. Now, you have a nice poster of Malcolm X on your wall. l heard the brother speak. l read every word he wrote. Believe me, l know where l come from. -You actually heard Malcolm speak, man? -That's right. So before you criticize somebody, you find out what he's all about. l'll take care of you in the morning. l'm going to bed. Hold on. l can't tell my side of the story? No, you can't. l know what you're all about. Believe me, the very thought of it makes me very tired. Good night. Ladies and gentlemen, my fly girl, Ashley Banks. -Would you teach me how to dance? -Yeah. Not in here. Even l lose my rhythm in this room. Okay. -Could you do me a favor? -Sure. l seem to be missing a Walkman. So if it shows up anywhere, like, l don't know, on your head, maybe maybe you could get that to me. -Sorry. Dad won't let me get one. -How come? He says he wants to hear everything l'm listening to, to make sure it's not bad. -What record does he think is good? -He really likes the Care Bears. Ash, from time to time, your father's gonna say or do things that may seem irrational or hard for you to understand. lt's not because he's mean, or a bad guy, or that he doesn't care about you. lt's that he's from Mars, Ashley. -l gotta get washed up. -Me, too. -l'm really glad you're living here. -Thanks, Ash. You're like the big brother l never had. What are you talking about? You got. You're right. l see your point. How many bathrooms you got in this place? Four and a half. A half bath? How does that work? lt doesn't have everything a full bathroom has. You better show me a full bathroom. l don't want to take no chances. Next bathroom. Can't a person gargle in peace? Hilary, are you gonna be in there for long or is this just like a pit stop? Stop hounding me. l'm trying to take off my makeup. Now, go away. Okay, good night, Hilary. l knew it! 'Game of Thrones' Prequels: Are We Really Getting All Four of Them?
http://styleveryday.com/2017/07/12/game-of-thrones-prequels-are-we-really-getting-all-four-of-them/
'Game of Thrones' Prequels: Are We Really Getting All Four of Them?
While the end of the road for Game of Thrones is in sight, HBO is by no means walking away from its storied franchise.
When the fantasy drama based on George R.R. Martin’s best-sellers returns July 16 for season seven, it will have 13 episodes remaining, with seven this year and the remaining six either in 2018 or 2019. Then it’s up to HBO’s development pipeline to see if one of the four (possibly five) prequel series comes in strong enough to move forward after the rightful heir to the Iron Throne is finally revealed.
In an unprecedented move, HBO announced May 4 that it is teaming with Max Borenstein (Kong: Skull Island), Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass), Brian Helgeland (Legend) and Carly Wray (The Leftovers) to develop what Martin calls four separate (potential) “successor shows.” Martin is involved in all four, co-writing at least two of them. Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss, meanwhile, opted to remain on the sidelines and will forgo executive producer credit on a potential prequel in favor of focusing on the final two seasons and, after a decade-plus, stepping away from the world of Westeros.
“I truly think it will go down as one of the best shows in the history of television,” HBO president of programming Casey Bloys tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It will be insane for a network not to at least entertain the idea of a successor show.”
Should a spin-off from the two-time Emmy-winning drama move forward, it would be the first time that HBO has revisited one of its iconic series. And Game of Thrones makes the most sense: It’s HBO’s most-watched show in history with an average gross audience of 25.7 million viewers. “It’s easily a multibillion-dollar brand,” says Henry Schafer, exec vp at branding specialist Q Scores. “Given all the TV fragmentation, it’s a great brand to help hold on to their subscribers. Game of Thrones is the No. 1 audience-engaging show on cable television right now.”
All four prequel ideas are in their infancy; Bloys hasn’t so much as seen an outline yet, let alone a script. Few details are known about the various projects, but Bloys did confirm that all of them are prequels that will be populated with entirely new characters. The executive has no plans to dilute the franchise or piggyback off the final season and rush the next potential chapter. Also off the table is a popular theory that the cabler might air the final season — which could consist of all theatrical-length episodes — anywhere other than on HBO. “This is for subscribers,” Bloys stresses.
Still, HBO remains optimistic that one of the four will come close to the quality of the flagship and help extend the franchise’s life, though Bloys wouldn’t rule out going back to the table again should none of them work out. And if all of them are strong? “That’s a high-class problem that I’ll solve when it comes to that,” he says with a laugh. “It would be nice if we got one of these off the ground and it ran for multiple seasons. The nice thing about George’s universe is it’s so vast. So could you do another one after that? Sure.”
In the meantime, HBO has been busy ramping up an impressive drama slate that includes Westworld (its highest-rated freshman series, returning in 2018); David Simon’s James Franco porn drama The Deuce (Sept. 10); J.J. Abrams and Misha Green’s Lovecraft Country; Alan Ball’s untitled family drama starring Tim Robbins and Holly Hunter; and Damon Lindelof’s buzzy Watchmen take, among others.
“It would be nice to have a Game of Thrones property, but the fate of the network does not hang in the balance,” Bloys says. And as for just when the final season will air? Bloys defers to Benioff and Weiss, who are busy writing and prepping the production schedule for the globe-trotting series.
Below, Bloys opens up about all things Thrones.
You’ve only got 13 more episodes at this point. Does Thrones tell a complete story? Do you already know how it ends?
Well let’s put it this way, the guys know very well the story that they want to tell. They have had a good idea of how they want to end their story for a very long time, so we’re just excited to have them do that.
The original idea was 15 more episodes, and now you’re getting two fewer. What happened?
There was never ever really a set plan. I think, honestly, some things kind of leaked in the press or may have been said here or there. They had an idea of where they wanted the arc to go, but in terms of the number of episodes, the number or the length of episodes, that has never been a hard number. I imagine the story is dictating for them how many episodes is right for them.
You’ve announced six more episodes for the final season, and there’s no airdate time frame. Given what you know about the pace of production and working with Benioff and Weiss, is it likely 2018 or 2019?
I can’t really speculate on that. All I will tell you is it is obviously a very ambitious season. This is the culmination of eight seasons of fantastic storytelling. They are writing, and they need to look at the production schedule, and we will take their lead in terms of the airdate that works best for them. They don’t even know; they are still putting the season together. And as you can imagine, it’s a very complicated show to produce, so it’s not like putting together a production schedule for a sitcom that shoots on the stage. It shoots all over the world and takes a long time to figure out where, when and how to shoot. So they’re in the process of doing that, and they’ll let us know.
Have you kicked the tires about how the final six episodes could air? Could they be weekly? Could you space them out and split them like Mad Men’s final season?
We haven’t gotten into to the airing plans. I don’t anticipate anything totally unusual, but again, until we figure out the production schedule, everything is going to come from that.
Would you rule out airing in theaters? Or having some kind of theatrical release, maybe Imax?
I would. This is for subscribers.
This is the first time HBO is revisiting one of its originals. How did the idea for these successor shows come about? Was this an organic decision or did pitches start coming in out of the woodwork?
I consider us incredibly fortunate to have a show that this many people have such interest in and that is such a good show. Truly I think it will go down as one of the best shows in the history of television. It would be insane for a network not to at least entertain the idea of a successor shows — I was going to say “prequel” but they’re not spin-offs because there are no existing characters going off the flagship. It’s not Laverne & Shirley from Happy Days; they are prequels. But it would be insane — with a universe like George has created that is so vast and has so many characters and so many timelines — to not, at least, entertain the idea, which is what we’re doing.
George has said there’s a fifth one in the works. Who is the writer?
I have a deal for four spinoffs right now with four writers.
You’re taking a highly unusual development path with these; it’s rare to develop four properties at the same time. Why go this route?
This franchise is really rich and very exciting. It is going to be really, really hard for anybody to match the level that this show has set in terms of quality and filmmaking. So the idea was, if we’re going to try it, let’s take a couple of shots and see. My hope is at least one lives up to the level of quality Benioff and Weiss have set. But again, it’s also very early in the process. I haven’t even seen an outline for them. The priority here is obviously season seven and then season eight. You’re not going to see a situation where we’re launching a prequel on the back of the final season. The final season is going to be its own event. It’s going to be a big deal for us and the fans. I’m not interested in using it to launch any other show. We mentioned the spin-offs because obviously there’s a lot of interest in them, but it’s a very embryonic process, and you know how development goes — it can be a long process. We confirmed their existence because there was a lot of interest, but it’s not something that we are fast-tracking to get done to air immediately after the final season. I’m guessing fans will need some time to decompress from how amazing the final season is.
If these outlines and these scripts come in, can you see one of these prequels airing before the final season?
No, absolutely not. No way. There’s not going to be anything — the only thing that will be Game of Thrones related on the air will be season seven and season eight, and then it will be a good long while if and before anything [new] gets on the air. Again, I say that only because I think when we confirmed the [prequels’] existence — that we were exploring this — that read to the general public that, “Wow, these are far along.” We were just confirming it so people didn’t speculate.
You’ve said before HBO is not going to have a version of Game of Thrones on in every quarter — which is a strategy AMC is doing with The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead. But in success, what happens if three of the four come in great?
You know the odds in development. I think that is probably unlikely. I was at Touchstone during Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. They had a hit show and they aired four in a week. This show is very special. I’m not looking to have as many as possible. My sense right now is we would be very lucky if one of the four rises to the level that we have set. Now, theoretically, what if they’re all great? That’s a high-class problem that I’ll solve when it comes to that. But knowing what we know about the development process, that’s why we wanted to increase our odds. But I do not see a scenario where we have more than one. But again, high-class problem.
This is such a sprawling world in terms of timelines, mythology and characters. How much trepidation do you feel starting over from scratch? These are all prequels and as you’ve said, completely separate from the successful world you’ve already built.
Doing any show, any pilot, any potential series is very difficult — it’s lightning in a bottle. There’s a little bit of magic, a little bit of luck. Even with the best of scripts, it has to be cast just so, it has to be directed just so, written just so. In the best case scenario, it’s difficult to get the show right. What you’ve got in this situation is probably one of the best shows in television history as a benchmark. That makes it that much harder. We have world-class writers taking shots at this. I’m hopeful, but the fans have come to expect a really high level of writing, acting and storytelling, so it’s a high bar, no question.
Considering all of the projects are prequels, will these be more along the lines of Fear the Walking Dead — which exists in the same universe but does not have any direct connection to the flagship — or Better Call Saul, which will eventually take viewers to the beginning of Breaking Bad? Could these eventually connect to a flagship or will they be in an island of one?
The whole world is connected to some extent family tree-wise, and the timelines are so vast that unless you jumped ahead tens or hundreds of years, I don’t see [the prequels connecting] happening. The other point I want to make about clamping down spin-off fever is if none of them work, remember, we are building up our drama slate: We have Westworld, which is our highest-rated freshman drama in history; Watchmen, which we’re very hopeful that Damon Lindelof is excited about working on that; we’ve got Lovecraft Country; Alan Ball’s show; we’ve got David Simon’s new show. So it would be nice to have a Game of Thrones property, but the fate of the network does not hang in the balance.
If you were to look, say, 10 years into the future, what’s the state of Game of Thrones on HBO?
Going back to that Who Wants to Be a Millionaire comparison, I think overdoing it — like having multiple shows — there’s a risk of diluting the quality and driving it into the ground. I have no interest in doing that. But it would be nice if we got one of these off the ground and it ran for multiple seasons. The nice thing about George’s universe is it’s so vast. Could you do another one after that? Sure. By the way, in 10 years, I’m guessing that will be someone else’s problem! (Laughs.)
How involved is George in all of these?
He’s co-writing two of them. A lot of it will depend on how much George is engaged and how he clicks with writers and how much the writers want to bring him into the process. That will vary project by project. But he’s a fantastic resource. Nobody knows the universe better than the one who created it.
Will Weiss and Benioff be credited as exec producers even though they want to walk away from the franchise after the flagship ends?
In theory, they are entitled to passive participation as a sign of respect for what they’ve done with the franchise. By the time the eighth season airs, they will have been with this show for 13 years. And I think it’s important to point out this is the only thing they’ve worked on. They haven’t gone out and pitched other TV shows or movies. This is an all-consuming job, and they want to see it through. When they’re done, they don’t want to feel any sense of responsibility or obligation, and they said to me they hope to watch whatever spin-off they have purely as a fan, sitting at home, not overseas working on a production. So I understand that they need a clean break. They’ve done something historic and huge and they don’t want to feel obligated to participate or offer any guidance to a show.
Will they have any say in terms of what moves forward, if anything?
They don’t want any. They want to focus on, at this point, season eight. I don’t think they want to be distracted by somebody else’s writing that they’re not responsible for. They have said that 13 years is enough.
On the flipside, what happens if you’re not impressed with any of the four prequels? Would you try again?
Maybe. I don’t know, it’s hard to say. We’ve got some really amazing writers so I’m hopeful. It would be nice to find something else there. HBO will survive with or without a prequel. But that said, the world is so rich, it’d be great if we could crack one.
Considering the scope of this world and the volume of characters, have you considered doing something like a prequel anthology where it’s either a different character every season or every episode, a la Black Mirror?
No. I want to be mindful of overdoing it. I look at this universe as very precious resource. I do not want to overexploit it.

December 31-January 1 New Year’s Eve/New Year’s Day
Max was pacing the backyard nervously, playing with the box he held in his hands. He glanced at his watch as he impatiently waited for Zoey to arrive.
He had been up since dawn, too anxious about his plans to even contemplate sleeping in. Zoey was spending the day with Mo, leaving Max free to make sure everything was set up and ready.
Maggie watched with a smile on her face as Max ran between the backyard and the kitchen, frantically setting up a romantic picnic for two.
He had approached her at Christmas, asking if he could arrange something special as a New Year’s surprise for Zoey. Maggie had a feeling that she knew what he was planning and offered her assistance with whatever he had planned. Max had blushed and said that he appreciated it but that it was something he wanted to do on his own.
They had agreed to move the party to earlier in the evening this year, making it so David, Emily and Peter could still celebrate with the family.
David and Emily arrived with a napping Peter in tow. “What’s going on?” David asked as he saw Max arranging and rearranging a picnic blanket on the grass.
Maggie grinned at him, “Max has a surprise planned for Zoey tonight.”
David raised his eyebrows, “So, it’s finally happening.”
Maggie nodded, “I think so. He’s been so nervous all day, he wouldn’t let me help with anything.”
Emily smiled, “I think it’s sweet that he wants it to be so special.”
“Make what special?” they all turned to see Zoey standing in the doorway.
Maggie, Emily and David looked anxiously at one another.
“Ummm...Here, Peter say hi to your Auntie Zoey!” David said, practically throwing Peter into her arms.
Zoey crinkled her nose, looking at David suspiciously. “Okay…...See Peter, I warned you that your Daddy was the weird one.”
Peter laughed as Zoey tickled his tummy, making silly faces at him.
Maggie used the distraction to tap on the back door, signaling to Max that Zoey had arrived.
Zoey looked around the room and was just about to ask where Max was when he entered from the backyard.
“Hey you,” Zoey said as he walked towards her. “I was just about to ask where you were.”
Max grinned, dropping a kiss on her forehead. “Come with me, I want to show you something.” He took her hand, guiding her to the back door.
Maggie took Peter from Zoey’s arms, patting Max on the shoulder and sending him a reassuring wink as they walked by.
Zoey stepped outside and gasped. The whole backyard was decorated with string lights, creating a soft, and romantic glow against the night sky. And at the center of it all was a small picnic blanket set for two.
She looked at him in awe as they approached the blanket. “You did all of this for me?” she asked.
“I would do anything for you, Zo. I love you,” he said cupping her cheek and kissing her softly.
Zoey could feel the tears forming in her eyes, “I love you, too.”
They sat down together, and Max began to unpack the picnic basket. He pulled out a speaker, champagne flutes, strawberries and a 2 plates of lasagna.
Zoey’s eyes opened wide, “You made lasagna?!” She reached for the plate eagerly.
“Hold on now, Miss grabby hands!” He laughed as she snatched it from his hands, immediately taking a large bite of it and letting out a moan.
“I love your lasagna almost as much as I love you,” she said in between bites.
Max shook his head, grinning. He dropped a kiss on the top of her head, “Glad to know that I come out on top against a pasta dish.”
Zoey stuck her tongue out at him and continued eating. Max was too nervous to eat, he turned on the speaker, fiddling with the volume to keep his hands occupied. Zoey eyed his plate suspiciously when he nudged it towards her.
“Are you okay?” she asked. “You look pale...er than usual.”*
“I’m fine,” he said, taking a sip of his champagne to calm his nerves.
Zoey looked at him suspiciously as she ate the rest of his lasagna.
David and Maggie were peering through the curtains while Emily made popcorn.
“So, do you think he’s going to get down on one knee?” David asked.
“Of course he is, he’s such a romantic.” Maggie said.
“What are they doing out there?” Emily asked, handing them bowls of popcorn.
“Looks like they’re just sitting there talking and eating,” David said.
“Wait, look!” Emily eagerly pointed, as she saw Max reach into his pocket.
Max pulled the ring box out of his pocket and took a deep steadying breath. He had never been more nervous about anything in his life, but he had also never been more sure of anything as he was about sharing his future with Zoey.
Zoey moved to refill her champagne glass. “Do you want….” she turned to offer him more champagne. She gasped as she saw Max before her on one knee, holding an open ring box.
“Zoey, you’re my best friend, my other half and the love of my life. I cannot fix on the hour, or the spot, or the look or the words, which laid the foundation. It was too long ago. I was in the middle before I knew that I had begun.** I love you with every fiber of being and I can’t picture my future without you beside me. Will you marry me?”
Zoey felt tears streaming down her cheeks as she nodded. “Yes, YES!” she grabbed his face and kissed him eagerly.
Max thought he might have heard cheering coming from the house, but he ignored it as he kissed his fiance... his fiance !
They broke apart grinning, as Max slipped the ring onto her finger. He rubbed his thumb along her hand admiring how well his grandmother’s ring suited her.
Zoey interlocked their fingers as she leaned back to rest her head against his shoulder. Max wrapped his arms around her as she sighed in contentment.
“I love you, Max.”
“I love you too, Zoey,” Max said, placing a kiss against her temple.
Music softly drifted over them from the speaker:
This will be our year
Took a long time to come;
The warmth of your smile
Smile for me, little one
And this will be our year
Took a long time to come;
You don't have to worry
All your worried days are gone
This will be our year
Took a long time to come;
And I won't forget
The way you held me up when I was down
And I won't forget the way you said,
"Darling I love you"
You gave me faith to go on;
Now we're there and we've only just begun
And this will be our year
Took a long time to come;
Yeah we only just begun
Yeah this will be our year
Took a long time to come
The End
