[summary] you’re a ghost who wanders the halls of the cathedral just trying to do your duties before you’re interrupted
[warnings] graphic descriptions of gore
a/n: i still do not write for real people, the ghouls are part of lore so i consider them characters, they are not based on the person behind the mask
➳ dewdrop
you walked down the empty dark hallways towards the glass-stained windows to clean them, bucket gripped permanently in your dead cold transparent hands. you take the sponge out of the bucket start scrubbing the windows like clockwork; you’ve been stuck doing this for who knows how long.
“hello there” the voice startles you making you drop the bucket you’ve held for so long in complete shock. it shocks you more that it is now detached from your cold grip, you stare down at your hand in disbelief completely forgetting that someone is in your presence before the voice speaks up again.
“hello? i know you heard me” the voice sounds irritated now. you tear your gaze away from your empty hands and lock your eyes onto a masked ghoul.
“y-you can see me?” you question hoping it to be true. his head moves in a manner to mimic eyes rolling since you can’t see them through the dark goggles on the helmet.
“course i can see you, my mask doesn’t make me blind you know.” you don’t respond to him, only stare in shock. “so how’d uh ya know,” he gestures to his neck “that happen?” confusion is written all over your face and dewdrop almost feels a little bad for you before taking your empty cold hand effortlessly to guide you to a mirror that’s hung in the hallway.
you stare in horror at your appearance, there is a large gash across your neck. your hand lingers over it trying to feel for it properly. you stop and turn over to the masked ghoul standing next to you and dewdrop can feel his heart squeeze at the pain in your face. you didn’t know.
“did you—did you not know?”
“i thought they were ignoring me cause i wasn’t scrubbing the windows well enough, but it’s because i-i’m dead?” the ghoul shrugs.
“as a door nail. i’m dewdrop by the way, it seems i was able to break you out of some kind of time loop you were stuck in. what’s your name?”
“i can’t remember it”
➳ aether
watching you wander through the halls was one of aether’s favorite past times, he has tried many times to talk to you but the moment you turn the corner you disappear before he can make the move to talk to you so he has just opted to watch you do your duties which consists of mopping the hallway over and over.
he wonders if you realize that it your own blood that you are mopping or if you think it’s just someone who keeps ruining the floors you just cleaned on purpose.
the puddles of blood keep appearing so fast it’s hard for you to keep up and it feels like a loop of cleaning the same stain over and over again. your frustration gets the best of you and you throw the dumb mop on the floor as the blood puddle grows and you spin around trying to find the source of the damn thing.
“it’s you” you whip your head up to find a masked ghoul standing in front of you, he continues. “you’re the one bleeding” you give him a confused look.
“i-i’m bleeding?” your voice comes out more gravelly then you expect. you haven’t spoken to anyone in ages.
“yeah you’ve got a knife in your back so i would—”
“what.” you cut him off sharply.
“yeah,” he turns you and takes out the knife and the bleeding comes to a stop. “been in there for a while i assume, i’m aether it’s nice to finally meet you” your stunned to silence. you’re dead as in no longer living.
“..i’m dead?”
“lucifer you didn’t know” aether suddenly feels a pang of guilt for not telling you sooner.
➳ rain
rain was originally on his way to go outside to enjoy the stormy weather before he bumped into you, knocking you over in the process. poor rain thought he was the one who killed you when he looked down at you with a large fresh looking wound across your chest.
you groaned in pain and he panicked quickly picking you up without a second thought and rushing around trying to find his away to a sister that could undo your life threatening injury that he was still sure he caused.
“hmm what happened?” you groaned out not seeming to be in any pain. rain froze in place while you blinked up at him waiting for an answer. he gently placed you back on your feet while trying not to make it obvious that he was staring at the huge wound on your chest.
“um i’m rain, are you okay?” he saw the elephant in the room, how could you not?
“you knocked me over but i’m okay, no need to cause panic” you say brushing yourself off.
“but-but”
“what? is something wrong?” you pause. it starts clicking for rain as he takes you in, you’re transparent and were freezing when he held you. you’re dead already.
“you’re not alive” you go quiet and finally look down at the large wound in your chest. you take a deep breath in as you see the bone of your rib cage poke out. you are dead. when did you die? you can’t remember anything.
“h-hey you okay?” rain place a hand on your shoulder snapping you back to reality. you can’t see his face but his body language says he’s concerned for you, you try composing yourself and nod at him to try to ease the anxiety radiating off him.
“how long have i been like this?”
➳ swiss
swiss had known you before you had been tragically killed, he did his best to avenge your death but it never felt like it was enough and your ghost wandering the halls only proved that in his mind. he tried to keep his distance from you too ashamed to face you. he would hear you at night calling out for anyone that would listen and he truly did try blocking it out.
you were soaking wet and cold, you just wanted a towel to dry off with but it seemed no one wanted to help you to simply dry off. your wet footsteps echoed off the cathedral wall, the sound was working on your last nerve. you halted your movements and sat on the ground and spoke out softly in a voice that was barley above a whisper.
“please i’m so cold, i just need a towel” you curled yourself into a ball in a failed attempt to try to preserve body heat. it felt fruitless considering not one part of your body was warm.
the sound of a door opening makes you perk up and you turn to see swiss standing at the end on the hallway. your head hurts and you can’t remember much, including your own name but you remember how kind the ghoul was to you. you smile at him and stumble to get to your feet as he moves swiftly towards your curled up figure.
swiss places a towel over your shoulders and tries to warm and dry you off with it. you lean into him finally feeling safe after what feels like forever. your cold hand takes his and you speak softly to him.
“i knew you’d come, thank you” you close your eyes contently as he dries you and to his surprise, you actually start drying off. he can still feel the guilt eating at him.
“i’m sorry i took so long” he looks down at your now half dry figure.
“you came that’s all that matters.”
➳ mountain
mountain actively tries to avoid you when you appear in the hallway that you basically haunt, he thinks it’s best if the ghosts that haunt the cathedral are left alone not to be messed with. though he can’t help but notice how differently you act from the other ghosts, you seem unaware that you’re an apparition and no longer among the living.
you did your best to keep the vases displayed within the hallway dust free but as much as you dusted the vases seem to stay dusty which puzzled you greatly. you inspected your feather duster trying to figure out if it was the problem. a pinch in your neck caught you by surprise and made your full body twitch in pain and knocking over a vase display in the process. you turn to catch it, but it goes through your ghostly appendages— luckily mountain decides to actually interject and catch it or else he knows he’ll be blamed for knocking it over.
you’re still trying to figure out why you weren’t able to catch the vase, it was right there you should’ve caught it. you then start inspecting your arms and hands trying to figure out what’s wrong with them.
“you’re a ghost, your ability to touch things seems to come and go” the masked ghoul speaks up while placing the vase back on its podium carefully.
“i’m a what?” you question.
“a ghost” he replies bluntly while turning to look at you.
“but that would mean i’m—”
“dead, your neck was snapped that’s why you get those pinches in your neck” mountain has seen your neck snap to the side inhumanly without your notice it seem to only effect you with a sharp pinch.
“i can’t touch things?” you ask trying to touch the vase again only to have your hand pass through it with ease. you look over to see mountain grab your hand.
“you can touch me”
“…”
“not like that!”
