thank you to @seachanqe for tagging me! Five things I can talk about for hours without preparing any material:

1. Feels vaguely cheating to go for Literally The Thing I Wrote 70k About For My PhD, but uh. Rímur and their relationship to the medieval saga corpus, plus their development in the post-medieval period, especially the codification of the poet-persona over time

2. The development of gender-neutral language in Icelandic (both as a shift away from 'masculine-plural as default' and as a move towards being inclusive of non-binary genders)

5. Nirvana in Fire. Would it be an informative talk, as opposed to me just saying character names and making noises? I make no promises. Frankly, after the first two, none of these are going to be good talks, as opposed to unstructured streams of consciousness and occasional whale noises, because I'm awful at extemporaneous speaking, but you get what you get ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯

Until I was about 16 or something milk was pretty much the only thing I ever drank at home. I'd have water at friends' houses, or at school, coke if we were going out, but the rest of the time it was just milk. It wasn't like I was eating a small amount either so my metabolism back then must have been absolutely obscene

When I went to uni i didn't trust the fridges enough to keep milk in so I stopped drinking it and haven't gone back

milk is very good for children! you're still making your bones so you need it! growing is hard work

Naknicromo day 11: crafting companions

No pets at the moment, sadly, so have a photo of my parents’ cat Jake helping me knit while I was visiting them at christmas. I am very lucky, though, that I’ve found myself a good supply of human crafting companions to drink tea and curse at my knitting with.

This is my standard random question, but what's your favourite vegetable?

Potato.  Or maybe sweet corn.  And carrots.  I like celery, too.  Also I really like broccoli and asparagus.  But overall I am not a vegetables fan, which is fine by me since they don’t like me much either.  Though it’s improving, they tend to mess with my IBS in a yucky and painful way.

Cabbage can go fuck itself, though.  It is repulsive in any form, and the more you ferment it the more I will have to ask you to please leave the planet and take your disgusting death-mulch with you.  I don’t care how probiotic it is, it goes into the fucking sun.

In classic tech support tales:

Dude's been having issues with email on his phone not working for a few days and had been speaking to one of my colleagues who's now on leave so I took over

Tell him to uninstall the email account and reinstall it, along with instructions specifying all the settings needed

He responds that it still isn't working

Ask for screenshots of the settings

He's used the wrong ports, even though the right ones are in the instructions I sent

He's supposed to be in a technical role!! Surely he should know to check if the settings march the ones he's been told?

I may be wrong, but I haven't seen any screencaps where bill nye was going down the "sex =/= gender" path and, if anything, he seemed closer to the "sex is gender in doctor's clothing" camp, albeit without saying so explicitly

This is hella misleading. The object doesn’t look like it originated within the black hole itself, this is just the  first time a link has been seen between a specific thing happening in the accretion disk and something else happening in the jet. It’s a link between the behaviours of the stuff falling into the black hole and the stuff that manages to miss so spectacularly it gets launched away at substantial fractions of the speed of light. It’s very cool, but stuff leaving a black hole it ain’t

Every once in a while I have a day when I forget to check a source. And it seems like every time I forget is the time when the source needed to be checked. Plus I’m new to the wonderful world of physics, so I was just like “oh neat!” and wasn’t really equipped to look at it critically (if that makes any sense). 

Anyway, I deleted the post because of the iffy source.

Sorry folks! I’m a dumbass, but I’m trying.
