JJK 265: The Role of a Sorcerer
one of the focal points of jjk since the beginning has been the roles and responsibilities of jujutsu sorcerers. it's a question that gets thrown around a lot between different characters: as sorcerers, what is the right way to live? it's a driving force behind many of the major events of the story, and the cause of fragmentation, where different paths could have been taken, but weren't. and in one chapter, yuuji dismantles it all.
as much as i'd love to talk about this when it comes to every character, i picked a few that i think are interesting (to me) and carry a lot of weight throughout the story to discuss, including gojo & geto, megumi, yuuta, and, of course, the man of the hour, yuuji.
Gojo & Geto
the main difference between them right from the start is the way they view their roles as sorcerers, and this fragmentation influences their trajectories going forward, and the trajectory of jjk as a whole.
Tumblr media
at the start, geto believes that his role as a sorcerer is to protect non-jujutsu sorcerers. as someone who is strong, he must protect those who are weak, and he must keep those who are also strong in check. he accepts this as his role without much question, and he takes it seriously.
Tumblr media
in contrast, gojo thinks that idea is, well, garbage, and he argues with geto about it, calling him self-righteous for thinking that way. where geto focuses his concept of his role on those who are weak, gojo focuses his on those who are strong. his role is simply to be strong. he acts to get stronger and prove that strength.
Tumblr media
another place where their opinions diverge in conceptualizing their roles as sorcerers is when it comes to finding meaning in their actions. where gojo doesn't think there needs to be meaning in their actions, geto disagrees.
Tumblr media
ultimately, his search for meaning leads to his downfall, as he reaches the conclusion that being a sorcerer is a thankless job, cleaning up after and saving the humans from their uncontrolled cursed energy. he decides that sorcerers are the ones who need protection from humans, because they are subjected to the horrors that humans generate, while those humans live in ignorance.
Tumblr media
meanwhile, as gojo matures, he doesn't ditch the idea that strength is what matters as a sorcerer, but he shifts his idea of role to raising a generation of strong sorcerers who can rely on each other. and ultimately, these leads to his downfall too. thoughts on this here under point 1.
regardless, their ideas of their roles are major driving factors of their decisions, and therefore the plot of jjk. their roles are what doom them to their respective fates.
Megumi
Tumblr media Tumblr media
megumi has made damn sure we know what he believes his role is. he's a sorcerer, not a hero. he doesn't save people because he has to or because it's the right to do. he saves the people he wants to save. that's all.
Tumblr media
he uses his conscience to decide who he wants to save, and that is his decided role.
and this is what dooms him too. his decision to save yuuji is what left him vulnerable to sukuna, and his desire to save tsumiki from the culling games left him open to be manipulated by yorozu, as she pretended to be his sister in order to take advantage of what megumi was willing to do so she could play her own version of the culling games. that shock and hurt is what let sukuna latch onto him so easily, and submerge his soul in the depths of his body.
Yuuta
Tumblr media
yuuta decides that his role is to not let others be alone. of course, this is most notable when it comes to gojo, but it's shown throughout jjk0 as well, such as when he refuses to let inumaki go against the curse that geto planted alone.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
he also expresses this to yuuji after he fake executes him. he makes sure yuuji knows that he isn't alone in his feelings, and that he's not to blame. empathy is one of yuuta's strongest traits, and he makes it his role.
Tumblr media
this is why he is willing to go as far as taking gojo's body, because he knows how gojo has to toss aside his humanity to fight all of these special grade curses (for example, when he used his domain expansions while humans were around despite knowing it would cause damage to them), and he doesn't want him to be alone in his inhumanity.
and while yuuta isn't dead yet, his role has doomed him, because, well...
Tumblr media
Yuuji
now we come to yuuji, the sorcerer who shakes this concept to its core in jjk 265.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
he's someone who'd decided his role before he even became a sorcerer. he wants to help people, and he wants to guide them to proper deaths.
Tumblr media
he also accpets his role as sukuna's vessel, and tries to maintain those two parts of his chosen role simultaneously. however, as we know, he fails to balance being sukuna's vessel and saving people in shibuya (i hesitate to use the word fail because it was not a failure of yuuji's, but i hope you know what i mean).
Tumblr media
this causes a shift in his idea of his role, especially once megumi asks for his help in the culling games. he embraces this role as a cog. he will help out fushiguro, he'll help unseal gojo, and then he will die. that is his new role.
quote from yuuji in 265:
until recently, i thought i should simply live to fulfill my role as i understood it. i thought if i died like that, i could at least consider it a proper death. but now, i feel like that's not entirely right. ... just the tiny fragments of memories that make up a person drifting elsewhere give value to a human life. ... people aren't tools. we aren't born with any set roles
yuuji completely rejects the idea that people are defined by theid roles at all, whether they are jujutsu sorcerers or not. he sheds his mindset that he needs to help people, or give them proper deaths, or fulfill a role than die in order to be worth something. instead, he accepts the value of his life as a collection of all the things he's experienced and the people he’s known.
and in doing this, he shakes the world of jujutsu kaisen to its core, and creates another crack in the cycle.

coming across as more than just friends is so simple when it comes to yuuji.
you eat from the same spoon, take turns licking the same lollipop, sleep in the same bed after a party, cuddle, go on vacation together, hold hands when you’re drunk, steal glances at each other that last way too long each time, indulge pillow talk, call each other cute pet names, buy each other gifts every valentine’s day, have questionable dreams about each other that leave you way too hot and bothered in the morning… the list goes on.
but the second someone mentions it, you both feel the heat hit your face, and all of a sudden you’re aware of the closeness and the warmth that tingles in the narrow space between your bodies and how big his pupils get whenever you make eye contact.
and you also realize the yearning. it hits so deep; right to your goddamn core. turns you into this pathetic, vulnerable thing that is scarily soft. it wants to be loved so badly, loved in a different kind of way which both you and him have been dancing around for a long while now.
at least until that safety blanket that you call ‘just friends’ covers you both again, that is. then you’re back to square one.

thinking abt how satoru is one of the only adults in the jjk universe who can separate the child from the situation/cards they are dealt with… yuji took in sukuna as a host and he’s the only adult who sees yuji as a child/his own human being while other adults see him simply as “sukuna’s host” who needs to die. thinking abt how satoru was also one of the only adults who stepped up for yuuta and that’s one of the reasons yuuta appreciates him so much… same with when he took in megumi. at the end of the day gojo satoru is the only one in the universe that knows what it’s like to be used/seen as a weapon or Entity rather than a person and he won’t let his kids feel the same way/he’ll do everything in his power to make them feel better & actually LET them be children!

Choso Kamo, being the biggest sweetheart and crush impending cutie that he is, walks you home late at night after staying with you to finish up paperwork from your last adjoined mission together. Who keeps remotely close to you, carefully watching your surroundings all while awkwardly engaging stimulus conversation with you.
You, who finds it absolutely adorable, noting his shy dismays of tensed shoulders and lack of eye contact to be heartwarmingly endearing.
And as he walks you to your front door, upon three steps, he couldn't help but see the admiring glint and appreciation swell in those glimmering eyes of yours. Making his heart beat with such accelerated spur, his chest tightening.
And as he finally, silently, bids you a farewell and a good night, you stop him in his tracks. Watching the stiff, bashful man turn back to your direction, pupils dilate when he feels your lips press ever so lovingly against his. Can practically hear his heart in his beating ears.
All while Yuji gleefully celebrates for his timid older brother from a near by bush, hiding his oh so "subtle" presence.

I knew it. Been thinking exactly THIS since I saw this new Yuuji's official art by Gege-sen which is first displayed at the JJK exhibition in Shibuya, the SN initial right below a big black star. Remember that Gege loves hints and symbolism. And the JP fans just went one step further to prove it LOL Gege is so sly for this! Choso will be beyond happy when he sees it 😊 (also love the red blood sneakers he wears on this art)

I remember seeing people theorizing that Yuji's Domain would be a boxing ring or something similar because you know, he's Mr. Left Right Goodnight.
And I get why people would think that.
But it never felt right to me because while Yuji excels at combat, he isn't someone who likes to do it.
I pointed out before that Yuji never smiles when he fights. He is always serious while other characters at some point would be having some enjoyment in a fight. Like, they get a little feral or make taunts, that sort of thing.
Yuji isn't like that.
So a boxing ring never felt right to me because Yuji is a great fighter, but he isn't someone who favors it.
Domains usually reflect the character, their aesthetic as a sorcerer.
Yuji?
Trains usually symbol transition. Characters having a journey.
That's Yuji. We're seeing him transition and change from how he was in the beginning to onward. Yuji had to travel from his home to Tokyo. Metaphorically, Yuji is on a journey.
When characters are on a journey in a story, they're gaining experience of something they haven't before. Yuji is a newcomer. When he ate that Curses Finger, his journey as a Jujutsu sorcerer started.
I think about the train scene from Spirited Away.
It's been forever since I watched that movie (kid you not) but it's one scene I think of and that train scene is representative of Chihiro progressing, growing up. The scene is different from the other parts of the movie because it's a quiet scene.
What if that's what going on with Yuji here? His Domain is reflective of him finally reaching that turning point and realizing who he really is/could be? Remember how he has that cog mentality? What if this is the part he breaks out of it?
I already guessed that maybe there won't be any physical fighting between him and Sukuna. I feel like it's going to be a change of pace. We get a "calm" scene where like Chihiro and the spirits in that movie, Yuji embarks on a train ride with Sukuna (who is a spirit) and both have some change to their characters?
Overall, I think a train station is fitting for Yuji.

itafushi hc #10 ; yuji developed a strong immune system from having to manage himself as a child-- he often went without supervision and he got into places he typically shouldn't have & ate things he also shouldn't have. additionally since he knew how to cook properly from a young age,, he actually fit some nutrition in his meals. he essentially microdosed on sickness growing up.
megumi , on the other hand, got a horrible immune system from lack of adult guidance. unlike yuji he refused to so much as touch anything mildly dirty, didnt want to cook for himself and instead ate convenience store pizzas for every other meal,, and thus seems to get sick literally just from being looked at the wrong way.
yuji once got what was a VERY mild cold for him , barely even noticed and continued to hang around megumi. he ended up giving megumi said illness and it took megumi out for a week and a half. megumi refused to talk to yuji for a while after that out of spite despite yuji's efforts to reconcile by bringing homemade soups to megumi's dorm on the daily while he was sick.

aita for abducting my nephew’s boyfriend and using his body as a vessel?
i (1000+M) was minding my own business as a set of 20 cursed preserved fingers when some brat (15M) ate one of my fingers to save his friend (15M). i tried to make him my vessel, but he resisted, and ended up being more of a cage than anything. i also realized later that he was also my nephew, but i’ll get to that in a bit.
i was getting pretty bored in there, since he wouldn’t let me out to massacre local populations, even after eating another one of my fingers, but then i got my opportunity. he asked me for help defeating a powerful curse, so i took advantage of his pathetic state to get out and wreak havoc in the world. i ripped his heart out (literally) for good measure so he couldn’t come back without dying, but that idiot came back anyway and died.
while i was wreaking havoc though, i found out that his little friend had a really cool jujutsu technique! i thought he would be an interesting opponent, but he wasn’t really using it as well as i thought he would :/ i thought it was kinda unfair that he got to have such a cool technique when i could use it better and especially since i’m stuck in this brat’s body who has no technique, so i cooked up a plan to get my hands on it and brought the brat back to life.
some time later, i got the opportunity to massacre civilians again. well, technically, i was exorcising a disaster grade curse i guess. massacring civilians was just an added bonus. well, the brat didn’t take that very well and was saying all this shit about wanting to die, which i thought was kinda ungrateful, since i saved both his life and the life of his boyfriend. granted, i had ulterior motives for both, but still!
anyway, he somehow figured out that i had a plan for his boyfriend, and he started running away with his half brother (150M). i was especially worried that i lost my chance when this guy (17M) briefly killed my nephew, but he brought him back to life.
one thing i’ve never understood is love, so i was a bit confused, but relieved, when my nephew’s boyfriend found him and managed to persuade him to help him out with some game my frenemy (1000+X) set up. some super nauseating bullshit about saving him and not being selfish blah blah blah.
i bet a lot of you are wondering how this 15 year old brat is my nephew when i’m 1000 years old, so since i brought up my frenemy, i should just tell you they’re a bit of a weirdo. basically, when i was in the womb, i consumed my twin to survive, but their soul still existed in the universe. somehow, my frenemy got their hands on his soul, and when he was reincarnated a thousand years later, he took over the body of his wife and had a son with him. that’s my nephew. i think they did it just to spite me, but they also helped me cheat death by becoming a curse, so i can’t complain too much.
back to the main point, i finally got my hands on my nephew’s boyfriend and made him my new vessel. i was right! his technique was sick! and the look on that brat’s face was priceless!
it took me a while to break my nephew’s boyfriend down enough to use his body and technique effectively, but it was kind of entertaining to watch, and now i can move freely! the only problem is now i have all these sorcerers swarming around me like flies trying to defeat me, and it’s getting a bit frustrating, if not tiring. every time i think i take one out, another one shows up, or they just stand back up.
they all seem seem pretty mad at me. i’m not really sure why. first, it’s the right of the strong to prey on the weak. second, it’s not my fault that my nephew wouldn’t just be a good vessel and let me massacre civilians, and it’s also not my fault that his boyfriend had a cool technique. i think i did what anyone would do in this situation. aita?
