#i've been thinking of that guy today. and like . his first days with the rest of the disciples#and him sort of trying to adjust to living in normal circumstances 💀#well. normal.#not normal but different abnormal circumstances#susanna getting his braids off when he decides he's not going back. i've been thinking abt that a lot.#so far i've only ever drawn him with natural hair but while he was a zealot he had to have it braided. it's a hc i have.#for convenience purposes but also just because well.#non black zealots were definitely normal about him !#my simon z is mixed. his father was from canaan his mother was ethopian. clearly he wasn't meant to be born mother died at birth father#tried to raise the child as jewish as he possibly could to ignore the existence of the african mother#worked out great for him he became a zealot#anyways. whatever. didn't have any actual connection to his ethiopian heritage until he met susanna#it's a whole moment. simon z is a whole moment#oh and there's also the. stabbing big james that's how i hc they met him sort.of#simon witnesses a miracle and panics. i havent decided which one yet i'll figure it out#he runs away and you cant exactly just leave the zealots so he's hiding out somewhere relatively near jesus' disciples' camp by chance#he spots the camp and mans hungry so once the disciples all go about their business and leave someone to watch over he tries to steal food#to his luck its big james who's stayed behind and he's both impulsive and agressive so when he spots the guy with the knife trying to steal#from them he punches him in the face.#and look. simon feels threatened. he's a trained zealot. he has a knife on him. it's a reflex can you really blame him ???#anyways he didnt actually mean to stab that guy and he /was/ just stealing their food so idk call it his own conscience call it the power o#jesus he stays and helps him. when jesus gets back he's like 'ah yes a knife guy exactly what's been missing from this team's dynamic'#james is currently bleeding on the floor and he's like nahhh its cool hes funny ! john is panicking and crying. at least two people suggest#they trade matthew for him. matthew hears zealot and starts hyperventilating because he's 88% sure he's going to get murdered in his sleep#(they dont tell simon about matthew's former occupation for like. at least two months more)#it's a vibe !

For those who have moved north in recent years and are still grappling with the warmer conditions, Jerry offers a class in Sub-tropical Gardening 101.
The weather:
Just because you’ve moved to the warm sub-tropics, doesn’t mean you’ll no longer get frosts! And while there’s plenty of sunshine, summer rainfall can be patchy and erratic.
There are two main seasons: warm and cool.
* Warm runs from December to March and it’s generally wetter. Rainfall can be short and heavy.
* The cool season runs from May to November and that’s generally drier, with lower temperatures and less humidity.
Soil: Jerry recommends adding compost to the soil whenever sowing or planting to help combat these seasonal shifts. And always cover the soil with mulch to capture and store seasonal downfalls. Jerry uses chopped sugar cane.
Starchy staples - potatoes can rot or wither in Brisbane, so Jerry grows yams, arrowroot, sweet potatoes and bananas instead.
He recommends sweet potato and an easy plant for beginners; plant in a raised bed for good drainage, then feed monthly and water sparingly. Watch for grasshoppers and lift all your crop at harvest to avoid leaving food for weavils. Crop rotation avoids reinfestation, too. Plant in spring for harvest after 3-4 months. Don’t forget the new shoots are edible, too!
Leafy greens can go to seed quickly in the heat. They do best in the cool season but sowing for succession harvests helps, too. Jerry grows a range of greens, including Ethiopian cabbage, leeks, sweet leaf, kings salad, and herbs.
A good starter for beginners is celtuce, which tastes like a cross between celery and lettuce. As well as using the leaves, the stems can be peeled, sliced and stir-fried.
Fruit trees - Jerry says you need at least one exotic sub-tropical fruit and his pick is the papaya. You can eat the ripe fruit, make a lovely green papaya salad, the seed relieves constipation and the chopped leaves have a peppery taste. Treat as short-term perennials and replace every 2-3 years. To avoid fruit fly, pick the fruit green and ripen it indoors.
Tomatoes - in the subtropics the seed should be sown in March for planting in April or May because they grow better in the dry season. This also helps avoid fruit fly attack - until late September, at least. Grow cherry tomatoes to reduce the risk of caterpillar attack.
Frangipani - a sub-tropical must-have. Don’t limit yourself to the old-fashioned white flowers - there are hundreds of cultivars that will grow in the sub tropics, so enjoy them and the different fragrances they bring. They need full sun and excellent drainage. Feed with a slow-release fertiliser that’s high in phosphorous and potassium twice a year: in spring and summer.

👅 — taste the rainbow! a headcanon about a favourite and/or least favourite meal.
zora really loved having some good tamales growing up and they will always have an appreciation from them. their aunts had gotten really good at making them with some beans and rice. and that really hit quite nicely during the summer.
when they were introduced to ethopian food- especially eating lentils, wat, shiru and other items with the injeru bread, that was something they really, really loved too.
they were also very fond of the salmon croquettes that their dad used to make every so often. that was a real treat.
as for some of their least favorite meals..
zora sighs when they think about some of the 'upscale', 'deconstructed' places that the occasional acquaintance would convince them to try. the food never felt terribly savory or put together. and it was so unsatisfying, like how was anyone supposed to have a good meal in places like this.
zora learned who not to try and hang out with casually based on their preferences for these kinds of places, truly.

This is such a cool story that CBS did with Ethiopia and Sweden a Chef Marcus Samuelsson who currently owns the famed Red Rooster in Harlem, NYC Restaurant and a regular on Food Network Chopped television show.
Chef Samuelsson tells the stories and recipes of Black Culture and Food in a new Cookbook, "The Rise: Black Cooks and the Soul of American Food" (Voracious), Samuelsson's latest book, is his recipe for a national conversation, by celebrating the contributions of Black chefs and Black cooking.

downloaded hinge out of curiosity just to like see what things looked like and to no surprise - kinda boring. I forgot how excruciatingly basic people are on dating apps the same cultural references, food, movies: the office, hot wings, nicholas sparks novels, imagine dragons, etc like so many clones of the same person. 
do I have to go to like portland, san francisco, austin, or brooklyn to find an obscure bitch that likes thai, or ethopian food, welds, knows hot to tie different knots, and can teach me how to use a butterfly knife? some niche shit. so much sifting through blue eyed blond haired blondes that look like labrador retrievers. 
at least the bay area has huge asian/weeb population and could prob find a girl with some anime shit on her profile if I looked through this shit long enough, i know she at least would know what hunter x hunter or evangelion is. and we could find something to talk about for sure. 
also so wild seeing what people look like at 27...just a bad pic or do most people look that old...giving me an existential crisis.

Raw meat meals for Dionysus
Well, you asked for it @ivycrownedwitch​. This a very spontaneous spot, no hardcore research there. I just happen to like food. The idea behind the post is to explore ways to include dionysian omophagia in worship in a safe and modern way, which refers to Dionysus’ epithet “Omophagos” (Raw-eater). I should note however, that the practice in cult seems to have been very limited, if at all. This is understandable, as consumption of raw meat has its risks. 
Which leads us to this huge disclaimer: 
Handling and eating raw meat asks for several precautions: 
Make sure you, your hands, tools and kitchen surfaces are clean and disinfected.
Your meat should be extra fresh. Pre-wrapped products should be avoided (exceptions apply depending on the meal). Ideally, you want to go to a butcher and tell them the meat will be eaten raw so they can adjust and inform you if necessary. It’s best to ground the meat max. 2 hours before consumption. 
In any case, your meat should be kept protected and in the fridge (temperature should be between 0 and 2 degrees celcius / 32 and 35.6F)
Consumption of raw meat is NOT recommended for pregnant women, children and immunocompromised individuals. 
Now, that this is out of the way, let’s explore the options. 
Steak Tartare, yukhoe and other variants

Basically a raw ground beef patty, what differs the european dish from its korean counterpart is different seasoning. The steak Tartare is usually seasoned with herbs, onions and capers, while the yukhoe tends to be a marinated in soy sauce with sugar, sesame oil and flavoured with garlic, spring onions and sesame seeds. 
Ossenworst

A Dutch specialty, ossenworst is a sausage of spicy raw beef/ox meat. Spices usually include  such as pepper, cloves, mace and nutmeg. 
Kitfo and Gored Gored

Kifto and Gored Gored are Ethopian meals of raw beef marinated and seasoned a chilli powder called mitmita and a spiced clarified butter. The main difference between them are that the beef in kifto is ground, while it is cubed in gored gored.
Carpaccio

Carpaccio is an Italian meal consisting of raw, very thinly sliced pieces of meat. It is most often beef but can also be veal, venison or several types of fish. It is often served with parmesan, lemon, olive oil, salt, vinegar and sometimes white truffle. 
@ivycrownedwitch​ I know of the existence of a thai raw beef salad (laab I think?, correct me if I’m wrong). I’ve left it out because admitedly, I don’t know much about thai cuisine and I’d rather learn from you, if that’s something you feel like sharing about.

A few days later, tired of soups and warm drinks, Crowley suggested they order in something of the other type of hot-- something with some kick, some spice, and something that required some chewing. 
He suggested a nearby Ethiopian restaurant that had just opened. 
“Oh, it’s been ages since I’ve had Ethopian.” Aziraphale said, delighted by the prospect. “I recall there being a lentil stew that I especially liked…” 
“Well, here ya go then,” Crowley said, from his position curled up in the angel’s lap. 
They’d found this situation to be best; Aziraphale being something of both a natural heater and natural pillow, and the perfect means of keeping Crowley’s back warm while he faced the fire, and vice versa. 
Aziraphale took Crowley’s proffered mobile, carefully not laughing at the fact that Crowley’s bony wrist was the most of his skin he’d seen in days. It reminded him of very different times indeed. But, those times lacked the promise of Ethopian cuisine, and so he shifted his attention to the screen in his hand. 
He found the lentil stew he was thinking of--Aser Wat-- and a few other dishes that promised not to be too spicy for him, given he was ever so slightly more sensitive to that than Crowley was. 
Crowley took the phone back and placed his own order, and Aziraphale watched on, bemused as Crowley found the spiciest dishes and added them to his basket. 
“Well, I suppose it will be clear whose is whose.” He commented, and Crowley snorted.
“You’re welcome to try some of mine if you like,” He ribbed lightly, shifting in Aziraphale’s lap. 
Aziraphale hummed. 
“How long did it say?”
“Twenty to thirty.” 
“Then you have fifteen to twenty to decide if you want to get the door, or if you want to get off of me so that I may.”
Crowley made a face that someone else may have called a pout. Aziraphale would, too, save that he knew better than to put words to the expression. 
“It does have to be one or the other.” Aziraphale pointed out helpfully.
Crowley grumbled, but eventually did some sort of looping roll that seemed more befitting of his serpentine form than his man-shaped one, but did the trick all the same. 
And with only minutes to spare as it turned out; the knock came on the door not long thereafter. 
“I’ll just fetch that then, shall I?” Aziraphale remarked mildly as he got to his feet. 
“Thankss angel.” Crowley responded, sounding oddly smug for someone who had spent the last several days turned into a linens burrito. 
Aziraphale gratefully accepted the bags from the courier and gave him a little tip, with a tiny blessing on the side, then returned to the demon. 
“Alright my dear-- your very spicy foods are in this one.” He passed the bag off to Crowley, who slithered into a slightly more upright position to be able to eat. 
Aziraphale was delighted; everything was delicious, and he made a point of sampling a little of each item before he settled down with what he’d known would be his favorite. 
Crowley appeared, at first, to be doing the same, but his expression was puzzled.
“Does yours taste funny?” He asked at length, and Aziraphale cocked his head, confused. 
“Funny in what way?” 
“Sort of a… I don’t know, cleaning stuff, bleachy way?”
Aziraphale’s eyes widened. 
“No, not at all-- here, trade me?” He passed Crowley a plate of injera with atkilt wot, azifa, fasolia, and kik alicha piled on top. 
“Mine’s hot, remember.” Crowley warned, handing it over. 
Aziraphale didn’t recognize the dish right off, but put some of the rich red stew on his injera and took a bite. 
It was spicy, that was true, but not horribly so-- he imagined Crowley would be disappointed, if not for the other flavor that had so distracted him. 
“I don’t taste anything like cleaning chemicals.” Aziraphale reported, before summoning some milk to banish the uncomfortable tingling on his tongue. Ah, afterburn. He had forgotten that was a thing. 
“Huh. Yours doesn’t seem to have it.” Crowley said, but passed the plate back just the same. 
“Would you like more of mine? If it tastes better?” Aziraphale offered, tilting the takeout container of fasolia in Crowley’s direction. 
Crowley shook his head, his jaw set mulishly. 
“Nah, I want the spice. Wonder what it is, though…” 
He didn’t comment further on the odd taste, and finished a goodly amount of his food before declaring himself full. 
Aziraphale got the leftovers packaged into Crowley’s usually barren refrigerator, and had just settled himself down to let Crowley crawl back into his lap, when Crowley shot straight up, flailed frantically to free himself from the blankets, and made a bee line for the bathroom. 
Alarmed, Aziraphale waited, then when he heard the sounds of Crowley being sick, he moved to follow him, rapping on the door. 
“Crowley?” he asked, trying not to sound nearly so worried as he felt.
They didn’t get ill, as a rule, and yet… perhaps this was Heaven’s next weapon against them. He didn’t think he’d seen pestilence around of late, but if there were any powers that might harm an angel or demon, he would bet it was them. 
“Something in the food.” Crowley said, voice strained, between bouts of vomiting. 
“Let me look into it.” Aziraphale offered, then retreated, feeling terrible. 
Bad enough that Crowley had to deal with the cold and his old injuries, but now this besides? 
Aziraphale located Crowley’s mobile and pulled up the order information, then set about searching up each of the names of dishes, and one thing became very obvious very fast: the spice that Crowley had so craved came from something called berbere seasoning. It was the one thing every dish had in common. 
And so Aziraphale looked further into it, and almost laughed with relief when he realized-- not all mixtures had it, but he would bet his signet ring that this one did: rue, also known as witchbane-- and Herb of Grace. 
It was, for years, used as the brush by which holy water was administered for blessings, and there were strains of the plant that had been watered with holy water to make it suitable for the purpose. 
Not that Crowley ingesting holy water, however diffused it might be, was funny at all, nor was him being sick, but rather-- at least it was a reasonable explanation, and didn’t suggest that they were being targeted again. 
He went to report his findings to Crowley, but stopped off on the way to start some water boiling for ginger tea. He had a feeling Crowley was going to want rather a lot of it, very soon.
