I had heard good things about this one and I gotta say, it's a decent Etrian Odyssey game. With this one, Atlus made plenty of improvements to how everything worked which makes things feel a bit nicer. Now you can earn EXP from sidequests and missions. Not only that, but one way shortcuts now display a message. Unfortunately, the messages don't tell you that they're one way.

This time around, we don't have geomagnetic poles every few floors. In this game, they're called submagnetic poles and only appear on the first floor of each labyrinth, which aside from the post-game one, only have four floors instead of the usual five. I'm not really surprised because I knew this one did things a bit differently (like EOIV). Once you reach a certain point, you'll go back and forth between two different towns: Armoroad and the drowned city, where you can set a sub-class for the first time ever in the series.

You only have to make it through two stratums. Afterwards, the next three stratums play the second main battle theme instead of waiting until the fourth like before, which makes sense considering how you start the third after finding the deep city. In the original DS version, the battle music in post-game stratum was just the second theme because of a memory issue. Since the modern platforms the remaster is on have more room, the sixth stratum got a new and way more fitting track for battles.

And the soundtrack is one of Etrian Odyssey's best. Overall, I did like my time with this one. The stratums were decent for the most part, but the fifth one gave me a headache with one of its gimmicks. To be honest, I'd say these remasters are definitely the best way to play the DS versions (even though DS touch screen feels nicer). The updated controls work well and the games still feel like Etrian Odyssey. I'd love to see more of the old games get remastered (Untold remakes on 3DS are better though). Looking forward to seeing IV, V, Nexus, getting rereleased and hoping that we'll hear about VI.

Suggestion for ‘The Sovereign’ from Etrian Odyssey III. The route could look like this

The Sovereign -> Aigis -> Joker -> Ryu

Aigis is a Pre-order bonus party member portrait (skin/character swap) in Etrian Odyssey III HD. Aigis appears alongside Joker (Persona 5) in Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth. Joker is a fighter in Smash Ultimate with Ryu. This gives the Sovereign a Ryu number of 3.

Alternatively, Joker himself is a Pre-order bonus portrait for Etrian Odyssey HD. (The first game) If the Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection containing the full remastered trilogy is counted as a single title, Aigis could be skipped, giving the Sovereign a Ryu number of 2.

The Sovereign is a class that people/your party members can take on, so I'm not super keen on counting that as a unique character that can have a Ryu Number.

Gutrune, however, has a Ryu Number of 3.

Also, both as of the time of this ask and post, the HD versions of Etrian Odyssey with the Atlus crossover skins are not yet released and therefore ineligible. I've no reason to doubt that they will be available come May 31/June 1(?), but until then, no dice.

Welcome to the Compilation Playthrough post of both EOIIHD and EOIIIHD. (I know the picture isn't great, but it will do.)

I did these two first since in summary, they're the easier ones, despite I recently finished EOIIIDS. (tho not this year, all of them done last year, with EOIII around almost christmas, and a Phigros update.)

They are still very fun games overall. Soon I will finish the remastered trilogy, by playing the first game, but I will take a break for now and suffer in another game.

2020 Backlog Progress in Retrospect

2020 was the year of finally finishing the backlog. The final game ended up being Disco Elysium back on July 1st but in the months since I’ve built up a list again. Going forward I’m hoping to keep the backlog at 10 games or less since I’ve found I do like having a wider list of games to choose from after finishing something. After finishing over 100 games in 2020 there were a ton of classics that I finished for the first time, so many so that making a top 20 list was very difficult. I’ve always made this end of year breakdowns for my own archives but I thought it would be fun to share it this year alongside the full list of what I finished!

Favorite game of 2020: Sakura Wars

When I was looking back at this year, the game that stuck the most with me was easily the original Sakura Wars for the Sega Saturn. Back in December of 2019 the english patch released online and I was so excited to finally be able to play the first entry in one of Sega’s biggest franchises for the first time. I had yet to play any games in the series beyond just fumbling around an import copy of various games on Saturn and Dreamcast and I was glad to be able to experience it with such a well-made fan patch. It’s a very simple strategy game mixed in with lite RPG and Dating mechanics but there’s such a great charm to how well everything mixes together. The way they mix in the animated cutscenes throughout each chapter make it feel like you’re playing a classic mid 90′s anime and it was just a nice cozy experience the whole way. I managed to play through it twice this year and tinkered around with later entrees in the series but I’m hopeful that the sequel will get picked up as a fan translation project soon, otherwise I’ll probably be going through those games the old fashioned way with a printed out GameFAQS guide at my side.

Weekend Console Deals for June 29: E3 Recovery Continues

There's still a lot of smoke clearing from E3 2018. So anyone looking for any major deals across the three console makers may be disappointed.

Video Game Asks

Tagged by the rascal @virgoid I’ll give some honest answers

1. Favorite game from the last 5 years?

Undertale.

2. Most nostalgic game? That’s a good question, it really depends on my mood and what game I’m playing.  Really any game I super got into can illicit this emotion, but I suppose Zelda: A Link To The Past and Donkey Kong Country 2 give me a bit as those were some of the first games I ever played.  Also the Sonic Mega Collection or Sonic Gems Collection.  Earthbound.

3. Game that deserves a sequel? The World Ends With You  (Also bitter.) I’d also appreciate a new Star Fox game that was actually just as fun as 64.

4. Game that deserves a remaster? Shining Force III.

5. Favorite game series? Sonic The Hedgehog, Kirby, Etrian Odyssey and lately I’ve been really digging the Ace Attorney series.  And even though it’s not a series, shout out to Cave Story for being excellent.

6. Favorite genre? The evidence is stacked against me, platformers and RPGs seem to be my jam.

7. Least favorite genre? Sports.  By far.  Horror is one I’m not good with but I’m making strides to get into.  And fighting games are a genre I am awful at but I love the character designs in them so much.

8. Favorite song from a game? Look I made three video game music compilations so I know my stuff.  Just look at those and there’s your answer as I can’t just pick a single song.  With that said Undertale, The World Ends With You and Super Smash Bros. (N64) have solid soundtracks. Bonus: Favorite Battle Theme: The End of Raging Waves 

9. Favorite character from a game? Tough question, Neku and Sans are characters I can really relate with.  Woshua is pretty cool too, and also Robin from Iconoclasts is a really great protagonist.

10. Favorite ship from a game? I don’t really do ships?  The most I can give you is I had a crush on May when I was a kid.

11. Favorite voice actor from a game? Ryan Drummond.  I still really enjoy his Sonic.  Mike Pollock is also a delightful Eggman and is the sole reason I don’t switch the audio to Japanese in recent Sonic games.

12. Favorite cutscene? The scene with Sonic and Shadow on the ARK walking down the long hallway to the Eclipse Cannon is still sick.  

13. Favorite boss? Goht from Majora’s Mask as it’s just simply a really fun fight.  Only the N64 version though, they changed it in the 3DS remake and it’s just not as good.

14. First console? Super Nintendo was the first console we ever had as a family. A Game Boy Pocket was the first console I was ever given that was for me specifically. The Nintendo 3DS was the fist console I ever bought with the money I earned from my first job. Yes I still have all these.

15. Current console or consoles? That’s a loaded question since I play games from all eras so I’ll just give the most recent consoles I’ve played.  PS4, Switch, Wii, PSVITA, Nintendo 3DS.

16. Console you want? I want another Wii U?  It’d be cool to get a PS3 for all the games I didn’t get to play and a Xbox 360 for all the games I bought when I was younger.  Sega Saturn, Sega CD would be rad. A Panasonic Q would be my gem.

17. Place from a game that you’d like to visit? I’d like to visit Snowdin and say hello to my friends!

18. Place from a game that you’d like to live in? Cliché answer but the Hoenn region from Pokémon.

19. Ridiculous crossover that would never happen but would be super fun? “Katamari Damacy VS Super Monkey Ball!!”

20. Book that would make a good game? The recent Sonic comics and most likely the new Sonic comics that are coming out.  (This answer is one part sarcastic and two parts true.)

21. Show/Movie that would make a good game? Bob’s Burgers.

22. Games you want to play? Way too many fam.  Not even gonna try and list that.  There’s just so many great games out there.

23. Have you gotten 100% completion in a game? A few but I’m not really a completionist.  Most Kirby games I’ll complete and the classic Sonic games I’m always glad to.  I also completed Super Mario 3D World but I had friends to help with that as it was multiplayer.  One day I might complete Super Mario Odyssey just over the course of time and I got 70% completion of The World Ends With You before lending the game to a friend to play so I had to wipe the data.

24. Have you cried over a game? I don’t really cry that much if ever, but I can tell you the games that shook me to my core and still resonate with me when I play them today. The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask Undertale Cave Story And while it doesn’t exactly bring out the same kind of emotion those games do, Animal Crossing during the holidays.
