The Advent Calendar

Who is Patrick Ridremont, and where has he been all my viewing life? The Belgian comic-turned-director’s Shudder Original THE ADVENT CALENDAR (2021) is a fiendishly engrossing Christmas tale maudit. Former ballet dancer Eva (Eugenie Derouand) has been left in a wheelchair after a car accident caused by her best friend, Sophie (Honorine Magnier). For her birthday, Magnier gives her an unusual advent calendar with specific rules: if you don’t use all the gifts, you die; if you try to destroy the calendar, you die; if you don’t follow the rules, you die. But, hey, the thing’s German, and you know what they’re like. Then a man tries to rape her, and the calendar produces a toy car identical to his. When Derouand’s dog chews on it, the car implodes, killing the would-be rapist. The calendar also produces candies that will make Derouand walk again, but there are sacrifices (aren’t there always, and yes, the dog dies), leading to the rare open ending that works. The score by Thomas Couznier and Frederic Cooshmanian has echoes of Bernard Herrmann, Derouand has great expressive eyes, and some of the guys she encounters are pretty darned fine (hey, I don’t just watch these things for aesthetic jollies). I’ve kissed so many cinematic toads on Shudder, it’s nice to finally have one turn into a prince.
