I was, what? WTF is that little island of Basque language in Segovia??

And I was today years old when I learnt about gacería or briquero, a language spoken by ~500 people as a first language, and ~5000 passive speakers (they can understand it but can't speak it).

Gacería was born around the 12th-13th centuries among cattle merchants as a code language for their businesses, and though it follows the Spanish pronunciation and grammar, it has influences of literally everyone in the Iberian peninsula at that time: - Old Spanish - French - Arabic - Caló (Iberian Roma people's language) - Galician and Basque, due to Galician and Navarrese people leaving their homelands to repopulate the area after the Reconquista.

Some examples of Basque words in gacería: artón = arto = bread gazo = gaizto = bad motillón = mutil, motel = young man muy = mihi = tongue ura = ura = water urdaya = urdaia = pork, meat

this week, in the spanish singing program operación triunfo, they sung escriurem, a song by catalan singer miki núñez - more specifically, they sung the version of the song he did with basque singer izaro, in catalan and euskera.

in operación triunfo it was sung by chiara, who is from menorca and thus speaks the menorquín dialect, very different from miki's barcelonese one (i don't speak catalan and still noticed the changes from the original to chiara's one); and martin, from the metropolitan area of bilbo (specifically getxo). for what i've seen people comment, his town doesn't really have many basque speakers, and his dialect is the one they learn at school, the most neutral one. izaro is from gipuzkoa (more specifically from mallabia) so i imagine they have different dialects as well, i haven't listened enough to the bilingual version to really get the differences but i'm sure a more trained ear will be able to do so!

Lyne Renée’s accent is a little off no doubt, but hey, kudos for incorporating into your show the language isolate of the Basque people and not calling it “Spain”. The respect, the beauty.

I’m always impressed when they get things kinda right in shows? They did their research and for once I’m grateful.

Langblr Reactivation Challenge

Week 1

Day 3: Create a list or a Mindmap of vocabulary topics. Start with a broad topic and narrow down to more specific topics. An example could be bedroom - furniture - closet - clothes or travelling - languages - study words - school supplies. Keep a hold of this because you'll use it later to create vocab to study. Some broad topics to start with: house, school, work, travelling, friends and family, nature, city. Feel free to use these or think of your own. Sol Invictus

A mediados de este año, me tomé unas vacaciones de lo más chévere: por dos semanas, me di permiso para irme en vórtices y hoyos negros de investigación por puro gusto, nada que ver con el trabajo, no deadlines. Una de las primeras cosas que hice fue buscar un video que llevaba tiempo retumbando en mi memoria.

Se quedó retumbando particularmente por la palabra euskera para bruja: “no existen las brujas; existen las sorgiñak, que son como creadoras”. Y eso me pareció tan bello.

Pero un poco de trasfondo… Llevaba tiempo largo ya con una crisis de identidad bastante fuerte. Una de las cosas que solía decir cuando me presentaba en clase era: “soy mitad puertorriqueña, mitad colombiana”. Y así, en el miti-miti, se me fue la identidad a medias, sin pertenecer a ningún lado. Ni boricua ni colombianæ; provengo de las dos, pero en ambas me ven como algo raro.

Un factor exacerbante ha sido que, entre las condiciones de salud mental y sus consecuencias en mis relaciones familiares, no cuento con un enlace fuerte a mis raíces. Y lo que viví directamente durante mi niñez y juventud fue un legado de vergüenza y desdén por lo popular… clasismo, racismo y probablemente otros -ismos que aún no he logrado detectar en el ADN de los valores que me legaron.

Por esto, siempre había percibido mi propia nacionalidad, mi raza y, por extensión, mi personalidad como una dilución sosa de sus componentes creadores. Y mi temor era que mis intentos por conectar con esos componentes creadores, especialmente en el aspecto espiritual, se pudiesen ver como un acto de apropiación. Toda una maraña de inseguridades.

No sé cómo enlacé una cosa con la otra, pero a la vez que reconecté con aquel video sobre el idioma euskera, me percaté de que mi apellido necrónimo original (de Campo y Larrahondo) provenía del mismo lugar que el idioma euskera: Euskal Herria, también conocido como País Vasco. De ahí, salté a buscar información sobre la mitología vasca, y fue como encontrar la pieza faltante del rompecabezas.

No entraré en detalles por ser algo muy personal, pero conocer más sobre la mitología vasca y sus prácticas precristianas fue como levantar un espejo ante mi espiritualidad y mi forma de conectar con el mundo. Un legado que vino de muy lejos y se saltó varios escaños, me parece.

El conectar con mis culturas de origen de forma responsable continúa recayendo en mí, pero el haber encontrado esa raíz que faltaba y que no había logrado concretar me permite hacerlo ahora con una mejor idea de quién soy, sin síndrome de impostor.

Conocer ese dato sobre mi antiguo apellido me impulsó a buscar “¿de dónde, exactamente?” (respuesta: Cantabria y luego Bizkaia [Vizcaya]) y darme cuenta de que el idioma euskera bien puede ser un legado para mí, no solo como lingüista masoquista que soy, sino por sangre y espíritu.

Ese afán por jugar con los idiomas y amarlos y protegerlos* a toda costa me lo traigo desde cuan lejos pude rastrear a mis ancestros (segunda parte del siglo XVI). El idioma euskera ha existido desde antes de eso (se teoriza que probablemente desde la Edad de Piedra). Es uno de los idiomas más antiguos de planeta, pero con una población de hablantes relativamente pequeña. No obstante, ese afán vasco de proteger la lengua le ha servido para mantenerse viva. Me encanta el prospecto de ser descendiente de una raza que ha logrado semejante hazaña*.

* Y que conste que proteger el idioma no significa resistirse a cambios que obedecen a cambios culturales, tecnológicos, científicos, etc. Para que una lengua continúe viva, sus hablantes deben estar dispuestos a ser flexibles y acoger los cambios naturales (y a veces no tan “naturales”) en ella. Los puristas, a la postre, más que guardianes de la lengua, pueden resultar ser una camisa de fuerza que asfixia la creatividad y la evolución de un idioma.

Este descubrimiento ha desencadenado en mi vida cotidiana un cortejo semirromántico con el euskera, muy tímido porque todavía me asusta.

O sea … ¿cómo no va a intimidar? ¡Vean esa tabla de conjugaciones!

Así que me conformo con un poco a poco mientras voy aprendiendo otros idiomas: francés, que siempre se me ha dado fácil, y alemán, que también lo tengo ligado personalmente por mi bisabuelo materno, que era de Hessen, Alemania.

Otro beneficio de haber conectado con mis raíces en Euskal Herria fue un reenfoque concreto en mi espiritualidad. Desde los 14 años, mediante mi práctica y espiritualidad de corte pagano, uno de los pocos elementos que se ha mantenido fijo en todo un océano de cambios y crecimiento ha sido mi afinidad con la luna.

En años recientes, esa afinidad ha potenciado mi shadow work, lo cual me permite aceptar y trabajar mejor con mis aspectos o “lados” más oscuros. Es un trabajo en progreso —supongo que solo terminará el día que yo deje de existir.

Pero conocer ese otro lado de mí, de donde heredo la forma de conectar con el mundo, también abrió la puerta al sol: Eguzki Amandrea (deidad solar femenina en la mitología Euskera). Es un sol cálido, pero también brillante y despiadado, que me hace entender que ya es hora de encarar el mundo tal cual es y buscar la forma de ser una fuente de consuelo y descanso para mí mismæ y para los demás, cuando mi energía lo permita.

En cierto modo, veo el 2023 como un marcador a partir del cual comienza la era solar en mi vida. No dejo de sentir afinidad con la luna, pero he encontrado una nueva afinidad con el sol. Lo veo en paralelo con mi cambio de nombre legal: de Diana María Campo Rossy (ente lunático) paso a ser Dorian Meridian Gray-Sorgin (ente solar… ¡y brujæ!).

En términos concretos, no sé qué va a significar ese cambio en mi vida, pero el propósito real es crear cambios en mí mismæ que me permitan conectar mejor con el mundo que me rodea. Es hora de empezar a disfrutarme las salidas de sol tanto como las puestas; de dejar entrar la luz en donde las tinieblas han servido tanto de elemento de tortura como de consolación.

Sé que a veces los monstruos dan hasta más miedo cuando los vez en plena luz del día. O en el espejo. Cuento con eso. Bienvenidos sean. Los espero.

Spain just asked to adopt Basque, Catalan and Galician as official languages of the EU

The Government seeks to include the other languages that are official in the State of Spain, apart from Spanish, in the language regime of the European Union.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jose Manuel Albares, has officially requested today [Aug. 17 2023] on behalf of the Spanish Government, the inclusion of Basque, Catalan and Galician in the language regime of the European Union.

The minister has asked to change Regulation 1, which regulates the EU's language system, so that "the other languages that have an official statute besides Spanish" are also official in the European Union.

"Spain speaks Spanish, but also Catalan, Basque and Galician, and it is our duty to guarantee spaces to represent, use and learn about these languages," said Pedro Sanchez, acting president of Spain.

Holy shit. Here's also a twitter thread in English about this if you don't read Spanish. Until now the oldest extant material written in Euskera (Basque) dated from the 10th century, and the next big one was 1545. This object pushes it back to the 1st century BCE. It was assumed that Euskera simply wasn't written until relatively recently, so this is massive. If and when they can decipher more of it, there might be more to learn there about the language's development and history (though it's very short, so probably not much).
