I spent hours and hours defending Malenia in the trenches on YouTube and Reddit back when the TRAILERS were just coming out. I STILL GET NOTIFS FROM THIS ONE THREAD OF ESSAY COMMENTS I WROTE ON YOUTUBE WHERE I TRASHED SOME SMUG DUDEBRO THAT WAS HATING ON MALENIA AND ACTUALLY MANAGED TO WIN THE SUPPORT OF 75% OF THE OTHER GAMER KIDS THAT READ MY RETORTS BECAUSE I WAS ON FIRE. (I am bragging a little, yes. I am still proud of that moment. No, I don’t want to ever re-live or re-read that cringe again but it was fun while it lasted).

I fucking think Radahn is pretty badass and a cool character, but the moment he showed up as the rival to Malenia, there were people worshipping the ground his horse walked on. As soon as the game was out, it took a couple of days for everyone to take his side in literally everything from morals to combat prowess, and Malenia just got dragged through the mud. Worst ER fandom era. I’m so tired of it and I left it behind, but dammit, I still stand with my view that Malenia deserved better from the fans.

She deserves to have her story analyzed and treated with care and her boss fight to be treated as a worthy challenge. There I said it.

Also, her strength is incredible. She is disabled and rotting from her core, but she can still do THIS?

She’s so fucking beautiful, I am gonna cry. That’s her trouncing her own disabilities to keep fighting. That’s her stunning waterfowl dance where she moves like a dancing bird.

And then she has her god-form where she becomes a vessel for an Outer God so powerful that it reshaped an entire part of the continent, and she can BLOOM, absorbing more and more power. She kills players every moment with this these days. Out of the 9 billion deaths that Elden Ring has caused players, Malenia claimed over 300 million of those when the stats were last checked. One of the best bosses in Soulsborne history and almost certainly the toughest.

She is an absolute powerhouse, and MORE IMPORTANTLY, a well-written, tragic, and morally complex character with an amazing story that I wish I could summon the brainpower to articulate in full.

And Sephiroth is the same if people can set aside all the fucking stereotypes and popular gamer perceptions of his character for five seconds.

This is him as a kid aged somewhere between 13-15:

He has his own “Waterfowl Dance” called the Octaslash:

…where he moves faster than the eye can see. He cuts through moving bullets, big-ass troop transports, and dozens of soldiers in the blink of an eye. He can also summon fire so aggressively that it completely obliterates the surrounding environment.

When he has his later powers, he cuts through enormous buildings and metal structures, he can throw….city ruins…at you,

He can….change the weather???

He can impale snake gods on giant…woodchips lmao?

He can fly without and with a wing, he can cut through different dimensions of time and space, he can shapeshift with his alien mother’s power, and he has an angelic god-form just like Malenia:

And he summons a Meteor that is big enough to destroy an entire planet in the game

And it….almost does….

But see, Sephiroth CAN still be stopped. Malenia CAN still be stopped. They both have limits, and are beaten by The Protagonist Swordsmen. None of this powerscale shit matters with them because they both end up defeated anyway.

Sephiroth can summon that enormous meteor but Malenia fought the man keeping the stars in check to a stalemate and still left him crippled. Malenia has an Outer God backing her up with power, but Sephiroth has his own alien god mother backing him up with power.

Both of them also have the theme of refusing to just fucking die around them too, and I respect that.

Malenia has an incredible in-depth and tragic story with a strong connection to her brother and the horrors of her own existence.

Sephiroth has a shocking and tragic story with a deep connection to his mother and the horrors of his own existence.

One is a fallen hero turned into a villain, one is a fallen warrior with crumbling and desperate morals.

I only said Sephiroth was more terrifying than Malenia because he is vicious, unlike her. Malenia isn’t trying to burn all of humanity to death. She just wants to defend her brother as his champion. I’m not afraid of her as a villain or anything. I can see that she’s trying her best.

Sephiroth is brutal and cruel after he turns to the dark side and is meant to be terrifying as the enemy. He doesn’t have a cute little Millicent looking for him to restore his dignity. He’s completely isolate and moves like a prowling shark. That’s that.

But aside from that it'd be one thing if the projects that paired them together were one and done, but no it created a fandom that expects them together and now we get unironic viral tweets about marvel downfall if bucky isn't in the next cap movie, even tho he shouldn't even be required for a cap movie bcuz his character origins have him textually say that he doesn't care for the persona of cap and only shows up in steve's stories bcuz of his connection to him, so he shouldn't even appear in the discussion in the first place and yet

but on top that, then the projects that pair them together also created a mob of samcap vs buckycap (and stevecap) dudebros that complain abt sam not having any powers and bucky going from supersoldier who singlehandedly beat up steve and co in wintersoldier to just a sidekick for a nonpowered sam, which is the worst bcuz i can't even argue fully against that bcuz why did marvel (mis)write Bucky as depowered team muscle filler and also (mis)write him as the "ex evil bad one" and completely miss the point of the wintersoldier and undo the chance for resolution to that plotline

im sure this is a really interesting and probably correct perspective (i guess???), but also, anyone who cares about the mcu probably don't care about comic accuracy. sambucky as seen in their movies and shows have become quite different to their comic counterparts (as both characters and their specific dynamic) and both marvel and the fans aren't going to expect that to change. many such cases unfortunately!

Why do you think there is so much animosity between Sansa fans and Dany fans? I can understand how conflict comes up between Sansa fans and Arya fans given the conflict between the characters but I can’t figure out what the issue is with Dany fans vs Sansa fans. It can’t JUST be because of shipping, right? I’m a big fan of Dany, Arya, and Jon, but I still do like (canon) Sansa as a character and honestly see a lot of similarities between her and Dany. Their stories have definite parallels and anti parallels and I don’t really know why I don’t see anyone else talk about it. Every time I try to talk to a Sansa blog or a fellow Dany blog about it, I never hear back. What gives??

I don't like the both siding in this ask. Sansa fans keep spewing hateful nonsense, farcical theories and made up headcanons in the form of 'intellectual' discourse in the Dany/Arya/Jon tags and then when book fans of those characters respond, the so called 'neutral' bnfs pretend both sides are to blame.

And while I personally feel that Dany and Sansa have very little in common as characters, there's a lot of fandom metas/essays/gifsets and fanarts paralleling these two as fandom faves. You should be able to find them on many of the character blogs if you are interested in that sort of thing.

IMO, Daenerys is clearly written as a tier I main character. She drives her story more than any other character in the series as the sole representative of her house and considering how isolated she is from every other POV character. The story in her POV is about her.

If we are looking at parallels, then it's Daenerys and Arya who have a lot of commonality in their way of thinking, their concern for the little guy, in their ideas of justice and dispensing that justice, right and wrong, their toughing it out on their way to the top, their proactive nature in getting things done, to be in charge, their love of nature etc.

With respect to the increase in toxicity from the Sansa fandom post show, then yes, that's because of shipping and Jonsa. A lot of the hate that the character of Daenerys gets is from Sansa fans - especially on Tumblr - because of her foreshadowed future relationship with Jon Snow and they want fanon, self-insert Sansa to have Dany's plot importance and story in the books. It's different on asoiaf sites like Reddit and Westeros.org - the majority of Dany hate on there is from Stannis/Jon Snow fans who are not big fans of a female character being the prophesied chosen one/top dog of the series.

And I point to shipping being the big reason because of my personal fandom experience on this site. This is me going down memory lane but I remember around 2015/16, I wrote these angry, frustrated posts calling out the TV show for taking Jon's book plot and writing that for show Sansa and Sansa's actions in the Battle of the Bastards in season 6. At that time a lot of Dany fans were also big Sansa fans and attacked me for being a 'misogynistic dudebro'. I am not naming names - shit's in the past - but I used to get blocked and get hateful inbox messages for criticizing show Sansa's actions.

During season 6 there were so many posts about Jon Snow being an useless idiot who deserved to die, Sansa was right to not tell him because he's a moron, Sansa's the politician/general who knows best, she deserved to be queen, Jon's the worst for stealing Sansa's birthright else Sansa and Dany would have ruled as best queens of westeros etc. - all from Daenerys fans!!

This was some kind of superficial notion of girl power with Sansa and Dany girlbossing around Westeros, bow down before these Queens sort of thing and fuck the actual book story. Arya was never included in these conversations because she did not wear dresses and Maisie Williams was not conventionally beautiful like Emilia Clarke and Sophie Turner and therefore did not fit into these Girlboss headcanons.

And then before season 7 was when we got the leaked spoilers of Jonerys meeting at Dragonstone. And this was when the full toxicity of the Jonsa shippers was unleashed. This was when we got 'Political!Jon' and all sorts of vile hate for Daenerys and more and more Dany fans started to react to that hate from the Sansa fandom.

Fandom always, always influences our likes and dislikes of characters (This is why I stay away from some fandoms - I don't want to end up hating characters) And this is what happened here. The Sansa/Jonsa fandom was so vile that a lot of Dany fans on tumblr stopped stanning for Sansa.

Fast forward to 2019 and the same Dany stans - again, not naming names but the very same Dany stans - who attacked me for being a sexist, male dude for critiquing show Sansa in season 6, started critiquing show Sansa when Dany got the same treatment that Jon, Arya and Bran got before her with the show tearing down these characters to prop up Sansa. Suddenly it was no longer misogynistic to call out how these characters were being torn down in order to prop up Sansa when they share scenes with her 😂😂😂.

That’s why I don’t hold much stock in words like ‘misogyny’ and ‘sexist’ randomly thrown around without context by the stans of female characters to attack people for critiquing said female character. I have been at the receiving end of this for years from the Jonsa fandom because I call out their utter nonsense.

The sexism and misogyny occurs when a female character is criticized for doing the same thing a male character is praised for - for ex. Daenerys gets a lot of this because she has parallel arcs with Jon Snow and very often she gets attacked for doing the same things that Jon is praised for. Even the show did this - Dany getting unfair flack for executing traitors when Jon Snow and the North do it all the time. The sexism is in how Arya gets attacked as being ‘male-coded’ because she’s not the right kind of girl. The sexism is in the slut shaming and commentary about how Daenerys is not the right kind of rape victim. The sexism is in the popular theories like political!Jon - wherein Jon Snow turns into LF 2.0 and sexually manipulates and seduces a rape victim.

Sexism is not simply liking a male character or critiquing a female character - there needs to be context. One does not simply throw around these heavy words simply to attack other bloggers to win fandom points. The word then loses it’s meaning.

So yeah, I ended up going on a tangent about my fandom experiences when the show was running. I do think a lot of the beef and toxicity in this fandom comes from shipping and Sansa fans wanting her to be something she is not. They want her to be a tier I main character with the story revolving around her love life as she Disney princess rules the North with sewing and dancing. And this leads to them diminishing the actual main characters and taking away from main characters to give to her. Naturally fans of the main character are going to push back against this.

And Sansa is a classist, sexist character and so her fans espouse classist, sexist viewpoints to justify her actions. Their love for all things 'traditional' and sticking to the status quo - 'Jon being KITN would be boring, he should stay a bastard, Arya being lady of WF is not right as she does not want to wear dresses, Dany will be mad like her father she can't escape her genes, Tyrion is doomed' etc. is based on Sansa being a traditional, pro-status quo character. Hence why there is so much clashing of ideas and discourse happening in the fandom.

So yeah. Honestly, I am just tired of seeing all these posts bothsiding fandom drama and making it seem like all the stans are equally responsible when the majority of fandom toxicity is started by stans of one character - Sansa - with the result being fans of other characters pushing back against their nonsense.

I think Aegon and Tyrion are similar in a superficial kind of way, in the sense that they are both rich party kids. And perhaps in the fact that they are both disabled, though in a very different way.

As a Lannister stan, Tyrion is family & I'd never throw him to the wolves but he's the kind of family to me that I'd really want to stab sometimes. He's a very complex and compelling character, but I really hate having to share him with the dudebros, the incels and the losers, since that's the fandom he seems to attract. No shade to Tyrion fans, but shownly casuals are many and they are the ones who keep voting Tyrion as the most popular character, while simultaneously having the worst Tyrion takes.

What can there be said about ADWD!Tyrion? The fact that people don't recognise that he's become one of the antagonists is expressive of the media literacy crisis. His chapters were difficult and gross for me to go through; I do not like to think of how he thinks of his siblings.

I haven't really done a review of Tyrion meta, so I don't know the extent of the material, as I don't necessarily seek it out and don't go in the tag either. But, from what I've read online over the years, people really tend to minimise the extent of Tyrion's flaws. The point of the Lannister trio is that they're as bad as each other, there's no point in creating hierarchies of morality. Tyrion is a very funny character, though, with an intriguing sob story and that underdog trope that people just love rooting for. He is also greatly boosted by the fact that he doesn't do much of anything that's reprehensible during AGOT, at least not off the top of my head, AND he also gets POV chapters from the get-go. So, fans get sucked into his POV and, since he's very charismatic and convincing, it's very easy to adopt his side of the story.

So, by the time we get to ACOK, people have already established him as a trustworthy character in their minds and tend to view every decision he takes as reasonable and correct. But is it really so? Someone needs to do an overview of his time as Hand of the King, because some of the shit he pulls is unreal. He is unnecessarily antagonistic to Cersei, when he should be trying to work with her, takes her children away from her without her consent and without even informing her, sends Myrcella to Dorne of all places when he knows full well the Martells have serious beef with the Lannisters, threatens to rape Tommen, poisons Cersei etc. GRRM really does Cersei a disservice because we don't see her POV until AFFC, when she's going off the rails, but these are all seriously unhinged acts to do to your sister who is supposed to be your team mate, all the while there's a war going on in the background with people actively trying to kill you both. Up to that point in the story, Cersei has been mean to him and maybe bullied him, but she does volunteer information to him when he arrives in KL and tries to work with him in the beginning. Maybe an unpopular interpretation, but I feel like she does put up with a lot of Tyrion's shit before she finally decides to retaliate and goes searching for his whore.

Again, I need to do a re-read for this, but IMO Tyrion just spends most of his time getting involved in petty squabbles that do not pay off in the end, because he's preoccupied with bolstering his sense of self-importance. His father expressively sends him to King's Landing to act as Hand in his stead, yet Tyrion doesn't seem to have a notion that this gig is temporary until Daddy comes back and that he should be thinking of forging his own place at court, that's not derivative of his position as Hand. Certainly, he's not dealt the best hand (lol), there's a lot of ableism and the political situation is such a nest of vipers that very few people could successfully sort it out, but he's not exactly trying to make alliances so much as he is interested in one-upping people & alienating potential friends.

So, after the Battle of the Blackwater, he gets into this state of lamentation that's he's getting sidelined and is underappreciated that is really effective at garnering the readers' sympathy. His grievances are not invalid or phony, but there's also this element to it that other characters are just sick of his shit that completely flies over people's heads. His trial for Joffrey's murder is half-sham, but also not entirely far-fetched, as he's exhibited hostile behaviour in the past and even cruel methods of retribution (i.e. that one time he turns a singer into soup, so check for murder and also cannibalism). Had we had Cersei's POV in ACOK and ASOS instead of Tyrion's, her stalwart belief that Tyrion is actively planning her downfall would not appear so outlandish.

Every time someone tries to tie canon characters in any way to the show counterparts an angel dies in Heaven. Which happens with... plenty of them, and it's probably one of the biggest source of getting most characters wrong. Not to be a snob, but watch something good for a change.

5. worst discord server and why

Not currently on discord, and I've seen some petty drama on some when I was. But what this question makes me think of is that one time I glimpsed a post in between folks who had an anti Targs discord or something like it, and other than the losercore of having a discord to be an anti in, there was some inside joke about being a "Tywin fucker" and I am just happy I would never be there.

Can't deal with a lot of characters that attract too obnoxious stanning, but it depends on how much I care on whether I take the "these people can pry them from my cold dead hands" or "not worth the trouble" stances. Jon catches shitty dudebro or shipping strays but he's in the first category and I'm pulling hard on my side of the rope. Characters like Sansa and Catelyn could be interesting in the complexity of being good aligning characters that are also meant to be critically appraised for gender and class scrutiny, and sometimes I attempt to touch them with a pole, but you dare even mention it and you get the "how dare you?" - not worth it ("Catelyn would be Leslie Knope if Martin let her HOW DARE YOU POINT OUT EDMURE CARES MORE" ok). I'm also trying to come back round to Dornish characters who unfortunately attract unsavoury crowds weaponising their ambiguous race for clout and online harassment apologia - the women in particular are worth it. I also used to love Brienne|Jaime|Braime but long story short here I wouldn't even care to get back. So not worth it.

Kishimoto never ever portrays Naruto as even remotely feminine, or frail. Neither he portrayed Sasuke as some "bad boy", Sasuke is a traumatized person. And what is there for most of these "relationships" like with Shino when there's like nothing in canon? It's just self inserting like you said, to show Naruto as "desirable". For women who want to be desirable.

Actually men who self insert into Naruto are similar, just in a different way. But more seriously: It was actually Darth Malgus! I was always going to play a Star Wars MMO, let’s be real. But when they started posting promo videos and cinematics for the game, my Sith-loving ass immediately gravitated to that guy haha. And then, it turned out he had the same VA as The Architect from Dragon Age, and that was it for me.

If we’re talking about companions, then it was probably Malavai Quinn. Sith Warrior was the first class I got to 50, and Quinn was the first companion that I really got overly attached to haha.

The character(s) I never expected to love as much as I do now:

Most (not all, but most) of the “new” companions that came in with KOTFE and beyond. I was initially really sour when I realized we were losing all our class storyline companions, and they were being replaced with a new crew of Lana, Theron, Koth, my mother-in-law Senya, etc. Especially when they – at the time – said we’d eventually get our class companions back, but it would be a while. So I started KOTFE sure that I would hate the new crew because I would rather have the old one…. and ended up liking them quite a lot! Mostly, lol.

The character(s) everyone else loves that I don’t:

Doc is the main one, jesus christ. If you didn’t read my last post, I just really really really do not mesh well with overly sexual and Adult Humor-y characters who scold you with a “You’re no fun.” if your OC isn’t into it. Doc is the worst example of it that I’ve ever encountered. I always play a male JK, and the fact nearly all of his convos amount to, “Boy, you and me are going to be up to our eyeballs in vagina when this war ends, amirite?” “You don’t want that? Come on, the Jedi Code doesn’t say you can’t FUCK, live a little.” “You’re no fun. Well, more for me.” drives me NUTS. This combined with how he interacts with Kira just does me in. Shoves him out an airlock.

Dark Side Jaesa is another big one, albeit mainly for OOC reasons. I just hate the fact that she even exists, really. I get the appeal of a story where a Sith corrupts a Jedi to the Dark Side, but the way she does a total 180 into gross hedonism while Serving You always just makes me cringe. Plus there’s the fact that straight dudebro gamers are really nasty with her, and she’s the main companion I always see men put into the slave bikini outfit, and just yikes.

Also just a lot of one-off NPCs that everyone goes crazy for and ships their OCs with, but I  constantly forget who they even are lol. Attros Finn comes to mind. I don’t hate them! Just don’t get the appeal I guess.

The character(s) I love that everyone else hates:

Lord Scourge, although I’m not sure he’s really hated as much anymore. I just remember at launch, when all of the overly invested Revan stans absolutely HATED him because of what he did in the Revan novel, and then flooded the tags with vitriol over being “stuck” with him as a Knight, and having to hear about Revan in his companion convos. It was really, really tiresome! Maybe it’s because I never really cared that deeply about Revan as my personal character, but I could not understand the backlash.

Anyway, Lord Scourge is my favorite companion in the game by a long shot. I love the conversations you can have with him about the Jedi vs Sith, and I love the mutually respectful tone those conversations take. (Where other Bioware companions who disagree with you have a tendency to just go, “You’re wrong.” and shut you down.) The fact that he’s so tied in with the plot just makes me love him more, really.

The character(s) I used to love but don’t any longer:

Cytharat, Koth and Theron mostly. Although this takes a bit of explaining, and is a bit Discourse-y – because I really appreciate them as characters, but their role and Bioware’s decisions with them is what made me no longer love them.Here’s the thing: Bioware has a bad habit of introducing male characters that are bisexual, and then having them betray you, leading to situations where they either get murdered or vanish from the narrative entirely. Meanwhile, bisexual women like Lana are untouched and around forever.

I was overjoyed when I first saw Cytharat. Y'all know I’m a ho for purebloods, and the fact that he was Malgus’ apprentice was fascinating to me – and then he turned out to be a bi romance. I got very hyped for him, only to find out he dies like 5 minutes later – or if you save him, he’s never seen again. Huge letdown.

Koth was the first character I fell in love with of the new KOTFE crew – I even initiated a romance with him! – but it quickly became obvious there’s no way to play the expansion without him turning on you judgementally at some point or another. And then, hey big surprise, you can kill him or else he’s never seen again.

Theron I’ve loved since we first got to know him in the Forged Alliances content, but that whole storyline where he seemingly betrays you out of nowhere, only to later reveal he didn’t actually, idk. And then, once again, you either kill him or he disappears from the story. It felt like a weirdly shoehorned in plot for shock value, and robbed us of a second bi MOC character.

You see the trend here? I want to love these characters, but Bioware continually electing to do this shit with bi dudes is tiresome and makes me unwilling to invest any interest in the characters anymore.

Haha, this question is hard, because most of the SWTOR ships I’m invested in are between my OCs and my friends’ OCs.

However.

SCOURGE / KNIGHT IS THE BIG ONE, THE ULTIMATE, THE ALL-TIME FAVORITE. It’s really hard to describe just how much I love this ship, and just how much time and energy I’ve invested into it over the past… 8 years wow……….. To the point of being almost territorial. And it’s also near impossible for me to talk about why I love it, because the version I ship is so personalized with my specific Jedi Knight, especially since it had to live exclusively in headcanon land for so long. Scourge is, more or less, my Knight’s support pillar and the thing that grounds him and keeps him humble, in a world where my Knight is surrounded by people who expect him to be a pure flawless messiah. But, I mean. How can you have a man look at your character and say, “I’ve waited 300 years to see your face.” and not immediately ship it. And then I finally got vindicated after all these years when it was made canon!

I really love Arcann / Knight for a lot of the same reasons as the above, but I just really adore his one (1) romance convo haha. Granted, yes he did a lot of fucked up things, but I was so grateful when he had like… a Zuko-esque redemption. Where he comes to your character and firmly believes he doesn’t deserve forgiveness, and especially doesn’t deserve affection, and is instead met with acceptance and a chance to grow and heal. That’s the good shit.

Others:

Lana / Warrior and Lana / Inquisitor are my particular jam. I endlessly enjoy the mutual respect between Lana and those particular PCs.

Malavai Quinn / Sith Warrior is a longtime fave, and although I DO love him with a female Warrior, I really do with he’d been an option for dudes as well. And I feel the same in reverse about Vette / Warrior – I do like her with a male Warrior, and it’s so sweet and wholesome and endearing, but man I wish she’d been an option for female Warriors.

I ship Risha with every woman – especially Vette and Sumalee – and will be salty until my grave that Risha / f!Smuggler isn’t possible, because I love Risha with the Smuggler but she gives me powerful WLW vibes.

Agent / Watcher Two is also a lowkey favorite, but I ALSO wish it could be done with a female Agent instead. Same with Agent / Raina Temple.

Agent / Vector is very sweet, but again, I will be salty until my grave that it couldn’t be done with a male Agent.

Can you guys sense a running theme here?

Finally: NGL I love Valkorion / Senya, even though that ended in pure disaster.

And people around here used to ship Keeper / Lokin, and tbh, I still kinda love it lol.

The pairing(s) that I despise:

In general terms, I fucking hate every single romance that involves the male PC romancing his padawan or underling, especially since most of them seem like very young girls. I don’t know why this is so pervasive in the game, but yikes Bioware. Consular/Nadia is the worst offender, but they’re all just cringe central for me.

But the big one is Agent / Hunter. This would have gotten me run off Tumblr back in the day, but god I hate this pairing. I mentioned in the last post that I just will never enjoy ships where the two characters actively want to murder each other, but. This just gets magnified for me with Agent/Hunter, where all the mind control and blatant abuse comes into play – and people have a tendency to write noncon rape fic of the two and present it as ~sexy rivalmance~, which is awful. Add to this the “no homo” reveal where Hunter turns out to be a woman, after getting everyone hyped about a dude flirting with their male character the whole game, and it’s just a huge No Thanks from me all around.

And for largely personal reasons I just don’t like seeing female Knights with Scourge. Listen, for YEARS  I was treated like a pariah for shipping Scourge with my male Knight, while being unable to find Scourge content that didn’t have a female Knight plastered all over him. Even though he wasn’t even a romance option one way or another, the way the fandom treated m!Knight/Scourge with disdain while ardently shipping f!Knight/Scourge was offputting as shit. And then, after years, he was made a romance option for women AND men, and all these awful people acted like they were robbed, the way people reacted when Kaidan and Jaal were made bi in Mass Effect. I’m so tired. I never want to see Scourge with a female Knight again.

This isn’t even so much about tlj as much as it is fans who act like they’re oppressed for enjoying tlj--I know a lot of people dislike it too, but I’d say about 50% of the feedback I hear at this point if overwhelmingly positive--when nah, plenty of other big-name star wars fans enjoyed the movie very much and it earned a lot of money, and despite people like me grumping about it, it’s not going to go down as the worst movie in star wars history or anything. I tend to see less hate now, from my side of the fandom, mostly because most of us just stopped giving a shit (or, like me, only occasionally give a shit) and so we moved on to stuff in star wars that we like better, or moved on from star wars altogether. 

However, there are dudebros who do feel the need to shove that disney’s doing diversity badly and pointing out plotholes that are there in every other star wars movie etc etc etc etc etc so yes I get that that’s annoying but it’s bc of those people that others who had a problem with the movie can’t have a productive conversation with the fans rn and it’s just a hellcycle bc now a lot of fans don’t hear criticism about this movie even though frankly there’s a lot of elements that could be done better.

Also, I know I can’t tell them, but to the moviegoers out there who thought the Throne Room scene was the best one, please, please just watch Twilight of the Apprentice, it’s got the dumb edgy aesthetic and the extra lightsaber battles but with more lightsaber and the edgy aesthetic is more pleasing imo

(Mandatory disclaimer that my own personal feelings towards the SHIP does not inherently extend to the shippers, that I ship many dynamics that some people would call “abusive” given the ongoing debate over what “enemies to lovers” means, and that some dynamics here are things that I might have shipped under other circumstances, but things just...didn’t work out that way.)

Cats - I hated Plato/Victoria before I even knew that it was POSSIBLE to hate a ship that much. I always went with the Plato = Macavity theory to get that little skeavy dudebro off my girl. (Also, I’ll be honest, the whole “mating dance” thing is...such a fucking weird sequence anyway. Like, my ship preferences aside, ALW WHY DID YOU HAVE TO HAVE A SCENE WHERE THE CATS FUCK?) 

Pirates of the Caribbean - Jack Sparrow/Elizabeth. 

Harry Potter - Ron/Hermione. I never saw it, tbh, and they seemed to be pretty bad for one another, even in the books. The films just took it up several notches. 

OUAT - Captain motherfucking Swan. I hated that smug, greasy little motherfucker so much. So much. 

Star Trek Ds9: Jadzia/Worf. THERE. I SAID IT. Both sides brought out the absolute worst in each other, leading to an absolute trashfire of a ship that obliterated all in its wake. AND THEN WE HAD TO DEAL WITH THE FALLOUT OF THAT. EVEN AFTER THE SHIP WAS *DEAD*. Don’t mind me, don’t mind me. I’m cool, I’m cool. 

Carmilla - Tbh...Laferry. Never my thing. I know that her character development’s a BIG part of Perry’s arc and I fully embrace character growth, but it just. Left a bad taste in my mouth. And the way shippers used to treat Laflashdrive shippers back in the day. As if shipping a nonbinary character and a flashdrive somehow makes it hetero. (#LetLafBeaRobotfucker2k19). 

Les Miserables - You know what? While I’m on the Salt Train...

Enjolras/Grantaire. Now, there are plenty of ships that are probably more deeply annoying to me, but none are as prevalent as this one. And I might like them a lot more if they WEREN’T so prevalent. But as it is, it’s like a black HOLE that’s devoured the fandom, so that you’d think the entire fucking novel/musical is about these two. And. Maybe I shouldn’t talk given what I ship, but it isn’t even like they’re THEM at this point, they’re just two generic white guys in an “uwu” relationship. And I’m not speaking for EVERY single thing given that I have neither the time, concentration, or will to read every. Single. Thing. Made about these two, but it’s something I’ve noticed, though I’m not saying that I haven’t enjoyed SOME things made about them and the whole “You believe in nothing.” “I believe in you” is...good content. 

It’s like...you’re walking in the woods (there’s no one around and your phone is dead) and you see a brightly colored pink tree. At first, it’s great. A pink tree! You’ve never seen one of those before. You wander further into the woods, and there’s another! And another! And soon enough, you’re surrounded by pink trees, in a technicolored horror realm. Where’s the sky? Where did you come in at? You think you remember seeing the sun once, but NO, it’s another fucking pink tree blocking your way. There is no God, there is no ground, there is only a technicolored nightmare blocking your every move, drowning you in visions of Barbie-esque horror. 

Terra Nova - Skye/Lucas. WHY GOD WHY? Look, we KNOW I have terrible taste in ships, some of which have...questionable dynamics. BUT EVEN I CAN’T GET INTO THIS ONE. There’s no...mutual spark between the two of them, just Lucas creeping on Skye and Skye trying to get away. Also, since I’m here...Skye is estimate to have been born in ‘32-33, making her approximately 16-17 by the time the plot kicks into gear. Let’s be very generous and bump her into 17-18. Lucas? 2124, making him...oh, 25. Not the WORST age gap I’ve ever seen in my lifetime...but....questionable. Very questionable. And I know the series wants to have us believe that people grow up faster (see: The fact they actually think Maddy’s old enough to GET MARRIED. TO A SOLDIER. WHO IS REALISTICALLY IN DANGER OF MAKING HER A WIDOW,) but NO. Like, at my CURRENT AGE, with less than four years separating me from that age gap, I can’t see it. That is still at least 7 years of experience in the “real world” that she doesn’t have. He still saw someone with THAT MUCH of an age gap with him and WANTED something, whether or not she wanted it or not, and tried to PURSUE that something while calling her “sister”. Like, I can’t stop anyone from shipping it and I have a firm “ship and let ship” mentality, but....EW. EWEWEWEWEWEWEWEWeWEEWEWEW. 

B5 - I’m in the same boat as you as far as...on one hand. Byron/Lyta makes me want to vomit, but also...our Teep OC does owe her existence to her weird, hetero white goth uncle. 

Star Wars: Han/Leia. Because, as we all know, cornering a woman before you kiss her is the love story of the generation. Han would have been better with Luke and Leia with Holdo. 

The Pirate Queen - Tiernan/Gráinne. I. Hate. This. Ship. 

His Dark Materials - Torn between Ruta Skadi/Asriel and Lyra/Will. Tbh, leaning towards the latter because while the former is AWFUL and signifies the quite frankly terrible writing decisions that distinguish the second and third books, at least it didn’t involve a badass, feral girl child becoming a dainty, submissive 50s housewife in the body of a 12 year old. “Oh, Will, I’ll do whatever you say, I promise. I won’t use my awesome powers unless you say I can, you’re so fantastic, Will.” Gag me. Also...they’re twelve. This doesn’t HAVE to be an epic, tragic romance, and the fact that their “kiss” (WHAT THE FUCK PULLMAN, WHAT THE FUCK, I’M NOT A PURITAN BUT WHAT THE FUCK) is the key to saving the universe? Really? Basically, they should have been friends. 

1789 - Danton/Solène. (I KNOW WHAT YOU THOUGHT I WOULD SAY, BUT NO. MY HATRED FOR THIS ONE MANAGES TO OUTSHINE IT.) “But Rachel,” you might say, “You’ve been very, very open about preferring anything to Ronan/Olympe” and that’s TRUE. But the Toho version managed to push my hatred of this one with The Scene, AKA “Go back to the kitchen, Solène and let the menfolk take care of this.” The French version didn’t even really have it as A Thing, he was just a customer. And the amount of time Danton spends with Solène is always directly proportional to the amount of spinal surgery she’s going to have. Now, I can’t exactly BLAME the two Japanese productions for doing what they did, because they have to appeal to a Japanese audience in the way they see fit. It’s an ADAPTATION of 1789, not a tour of it. But that doesn’t mean I have to LIKE it. And. Like. You know there’s no way THAT one’s going to end in a way that’s good for Solène. Either (1) he’ll set her aside for his family or (2) If they SOMEHOW stay together...the Reign of Terror’s looming. 

Also: Danton/Charlotte. No. No. Just. No. There are so many reasons why. But no.

10.  Is there a fandom you read fic from but don’t write in?

We’ve both discussed a lot about how...DIFFICULT it can be to write fic for something. There are a lot of things I love dearly but just don’t have it in me to write fic for. Ace Attorney is an obvious one, Mozart l’Opera Rock, Elisabeth (though I’m trying to work on that one), Les Miserables, Star Wars, Star Trek, B5....a ton more that I could mention but it would honestly take too much time. Words hard, reading still hard but slightly easier. 

21. What was the first fanfic you ever wrote? 

The first thing I ever wrote, when I was five years old, was (very heteronormative) fanfiction for The Stinky Cheese Man, where he finds The Stinky Cheese Woman, which now, of course, I recognize as my own attempt to write myself into a narrative from which I’d been excluded. Or something. I think my mom still has it buried someplace, lurking...

Also, @theocraindora at some point managed to get me to write at least one full Carmilla AU during the second season, when we both must have been about 17-18-ish, if my math’s not too dubious, and that was the first thing I ever actually finished for a long time, even though it didn’t ever meet my personal standards for publishing and is likely to stay buried. For awhile, at least. 

23. Name a fic you’ve written that you’re especially fond of & explain why you like it.

Since I talked about PLP’s tragic backstory, time for something happier. Paradise Lost, which I’m actually pretty damn happy with because it was my first time working with something that’s not a historical piece, and it was honestly a treat working with Mira’s voice. I think that Mira really “clicked” for me as a character here. Like, “Yes, this is why she’s like this, this makes sense.” There are some times where you can really feel a character’s voice when you’re writing and you can get things out, and this was one of those very rare times for me. Not saying that it’s going to happen NEXT time, but this time, it was rather relaxing. 

It was honestly one of the smoother writing experiences I had? Like, it only took me about a day or so, from when we exchanged PMs to publishing it, which is pretty impressive, all things considered. I’m still not tossing out doing anything more with this world in the future, tbh. That and Goosefic were probably two of the easiest to just...get out. (WHICH. 92 HITS. GOOSEFIC HAS 92 HITS. THAT IS INSANE FOR A ONE-SHOT IN A SMALL FANDOM. HOLY SHIT.)

50. How did you get into reading and/or writing fanfiction?

I’ve been WRITING fanfiction since I could hold a pencil and make scribbles.  When I was younger, I could write that kind of thing easily, the shame came later. 

Finding out that fanfiction EXISTED...was probably when I was about 9-10 and found Balto x Harry Potter crossover fanfiction. Which. In hindsight. Was pretty horrible, but my young self was CAPTIVATED because Balto and Harry Potter? In the same universe? IT WAS LIKE MAGIC. 

Astonishingly, I did not read M rated stuff until I was at least 15-16-ish. I kept myself remarkably sheltered and only looked into it when I became curious. And got over my weird hyper-religious phase. 

When I was about 12-13, I started to toy with writing myself, writing my own OC crossovers for Phantom Manor (the gother, European version of Haunted Mansion that was my special interest for. Ages). Carmilla when I was 17-18 was one of the first things I wrote a full, complete Thing for, even if I never published anything for it. And from there, I’d try to write things for both The Pirate Queen and Dracula, though both projects proved to be too ambitious and I ended up cutting them off, tragically, but they gave me the confidence I needed to get into 1789, which I DID publish something for finally, on the day I was taking my GRE because. Well. I had something else I feared more than a flame. 

51. Rant or Gush about one thing you love or hate in the world of fanfiction! Go!

I don’t know if this is one thing or five separate things in a trenchcoat, but here you go. 

I love how we can explore things that could never be explored in canon, for one reason or another; I love that we have an experience that we can filter according to what WE want, including trigger warnings, which is honestly a godsend to me. We talk a lot about the transformative nature of fanfic, and it IS, but also, the level of empowerment that comes with being able to take back a narrative that says “hey, you’re not supposed to be in this narrative” or “You’ll like what we put out and you’ll stick with it” or “Well, if you don’t like it, create your own” and say “Okay, I will.” And, obviously the comments are lovely, having that kind of instant encouragement, and in the small fandoms in particular, it’s VITAL, but I also don’t feel like they’re inherently mandatory or that readers should feel FORCED. But I do love that, no matter what, something you write can connect with someone from the other side of the world. Like, people can argue all they want about fanfic being valid or not, but MOST people who want to be professional writers never get that. And when you stop and think about how we’ve been changing the narrative for as long as we’ve had oral stories, that this is how storytelling was ORIGINALLY done...that’s very humbling.

Was there a lot of drama in the dgm fandom in 2008? All I can remember is the ship wars

Okay my bad I mixed up the dates I meant 2009 dkjhfdf but -

Disclaimer, I was 14, I was both in the French and the English fandom of dgm - in the French fandom, I was in a general forum with a lot of guys and lots of theorizing, and in the English one I was in a roleplay community mostly focusing on the Noah Family, which wasn’t talking as much in detail about the show. I was distant to shipping, I wasn’t a shipper, but I knew a lot of shipping community in the RP community.Also disclaimer, I was staning the Noah and I h a t e d Lenalee. (I come a long way.)And, I lived the Alma’s arc. 

I will put it under cuts because man the memories, but here you go.

Notice though that at least where I was, I never experienced actual harrassment (the closest was probably the shithead of the French fandoms but I enter in details about it under cut). Honestly when comparing to some stuff in recent fandom history, it wasn’t...... The worst thing ever, but it was still a ride.

-Shipwars. Shipwars everywhere. 

In English fandoms, it was especially the usual shipwar you see. Like “guh who would ship THIS ship when you can ship THIS ship” and the usual. Since the characters of the show are mostly guys, Lenalee was seen as a threat by shipping community who hated on her because she got in the way of the ships.  Shipping any ship with Lenalee was considered bad on the mlm shippers side.

In the French fandom, as I said, I was mostly with dudes, and especially dudes who were veryyy not into mlm. (They were repeating on the forum that girls liked mlm because it “humiliated guys”, that was a Good Time :)))))) ). Even bringing up the possibility of it being gay was causing an uproar among the guys who would call you out for being perverted that way. Note tho that I personally didn’t ship anything back then. One or two girls I knew did, and they were being clashed hard.

Guys usually shipped Allen/Lenalee or Allen/Road and they would argue about it (I remember mostly calling Allen/Lenalee boring) but it was rarely the focus of the conversations, it remained a lot of theories.

Leading to the new point:

-The Alma Arc Came Out. (SPOILERS ABOUT THE ALMA ARC AHEAD)

It was a weird time. I saw a lot of people complain on both fandom that it was rushed and coming out of nowhere (while...... it didn’t). Note also that we were having a chapter every months or every two months at this point, after all the rest of the manga was weekly. And if you don’t know dgm (well check it out and check the alma arc pls) Alma is Kanda’s canon love interest, a character who's a guy, or so presenting as such/using masculine pronoums, and revealed to be Kanda’s soulmate, his lover from a past life in which Alma was a woman. (There are debates about how to refer to Alma’s gender nowadays, but back then, everyone stuck to “he” because that was what the most pushed forward for the few months of publications and his past life stayed blurry since Kanda and Alma barely remember it. It’s relevent, i promise.)

Shipping fandoms, especially people who shipped Kanda with any of the guys, were s o upset. Because they considered Alma came out of nowhere and that it wasn’t the ship they wanted with Kanda. There was uproar against it. It calmed down with the years, and people started to love Alma (thanks god, Alma is bae).

I personally was completely destroyed by this arc and loved those two right away, so I was really good with the manga’s storyline.

So, remember when I said the French fandom I was into hated the even possibility of mlm stuff?  Ye. They didn’t like it. Like istg, suddenly the DGM subject of that forum got really quiet. When, before the reveal, some people pointed out Alma and Kanda seemed really close, the guys were shutting them down, calling them perverts or Fujo (glad to see fandom never change /s) and saying stuff like we were ruining a perfectly good story and we were stupid. 

Aaaand when Alma was revealed to be Kanda’s soulmate (who was a character we were hinted at since the second arc of the manga and people theorized about a lot), the guys went upset. Either that Hoshino was a “fujo” and it was to be expected and that it was the least interesting development possible for Kanda (did i mention they all loved Kanda?? Oh the mighty have fallen. Kanda was like, The Alpha Male for them, and this arc came to an end with Kanda showing vulnerability and love for another guy, the thing those guys were always saying was the most humiliating thing for a man. I didn’t forget.). 

The fandom on this forum grew a lot quiet after it, except for a few guys who were cool with it or guys who went “well Kanda doesn’t actually love Alma since he loved only the Past life so it’s not gay” (and fuck this. that’s so much bad faith lmao), but istg that was a riot to witness.

(I say it again, I don’t intend to debate about Alma’s gender right now, and I completely understand the debate over it nowadays, and it’s just as important to discuss about it. NonCis!Alma is still something important and therefore the relationship with Kanda is a huge thing. I just want to emphasize on the fact that straight guys who didn’t want to think about gender fucking rioted because the manga presented Alma as Kanda’s male love interest, and if you don’t know anything about Gender theory, this is what you stop at - and those Guys had none of it.)

-Allen was considered boring// 14th Debates

That was something from both Noah side I was into and the French fandom mostly, of people considering Allen being annoying/Boring. Characters like Kanda were much more appreciated (Lavi kinda fell into the background with the arcs that came out at this point, although he was still very loved in the English fandom). 

So, there were a lot of theories to “make Allen more interesting” which were mostly debates to have him join the Noah for good by becoming the 14th. There were people arguing a lot about that, and the few people who actually liked Allen were kinda upset about it.

There was of course a lot of theorizing on the 14th, and the two commons theories were “Allen will join the Noah as the 14th” or “Allen will become the 14th and, Road and Tyki and they’ll create their own third side”. 

So let’s say those people were annoyed when the 14th appeared and told he wanted to become Millenium Earl instead of Adam. Oops. 

Mostly I know there was a lot of disappointment about Nea’s introduction and the fact that it’s more a case of “Nea will remplace Allen” instead of “Allen will become a Noah”. A lot of the guys from the forum I mentioned weren’t too happy with that development, and complained about it a lot (and the further infos on Nea didn’t please them much. The latest theory group I mentioned tho were overjoyed when Tyki and Road came to free Allen though).

-Noah VS Exorcist Wars

I suppose it’s more a question of preference there, but at least in the RP community I was into, and lowkey in the French fandom, there were tons of arguing depending on which side you were rooting for. Both sides could get extremely rude and mean to each other, and it could result in the fandom with an obvious bias on who people were cheering for.

There were very few people cheering for a 3rd side (I was mostly Noah but leaning to 3rd Side, nowadays I can’t even feel myself in any sides,i’m just “please take care of those children” side), and this was usually the neutral part of the fandom.

Honestly, on me who wasn’t a shipper, and mostly on non-shipping groups? This was our shipping wars. That was what people were getting angry at. Who you were siding with.

-Lenalee Hate, which doesn’t exist in this fandom anymore right? /s

I plead guilty there because I was totally among those ones, and that’s probably why i’m so upset when I still see it nowadays. 

People hated on Lenalee for a brunch of reasons, either because she was in the middle of their ships, or because she was considered “useless” and “whiney”. The complains about her violent attitude only came a lot later tbh??  I know I didn’t like her among other reasons for that, and because a lot of characters liked her and it made me upset, and a lot of people were like that tbh. 

She got shit then, she still gets shit now. Back then though I remember at least in Roleplay community that Lenalee was always the punchline of a joke, and people roleplaying Lenalee could have a hard time with people being rude to them.

That’s honestly the most that I can remember, and honestly it was probably just the communities I was into, but I especially remember the end of the Alma Arc with the Dudebros. Like I think on tumblr we tend to forget fandoms weren’t always that opened with this kind of stuff, and that regardless of how people regard the Alma’s arc nowadays, it was huge back then. 

Everyone kinda fell out of the fandom in the following time since it’s when the big hiatus started to appear, leading to the 3 years haitus in 2012 (?). Between the Alma Arc and then, the fandom really died down and people moved on on most parts. 

On tumblr, at least when the manga restarted, a lot of people who used to be in that Old Fandom had tried to not reproduce shipwars/hatred stuff all that much. I wouldn’t say we’re out of problems though, of course, and there are still some... casual issues. (like when the last chapter came out on Mangastream the comments were flooded with slurs because people considered the chapter “too gay”, and I even saw back some of the old “Allen is boring, let him be remplaced by Nea already” fight. me.)

eeh, it’s a long story, if you understand italian and come off anon, because i was too lazy to hide the names, i can give you the screeshots. i try give you a summary, but it’s not the same, you have to see the comments with your own two eyes.basically there was this page on facebook, where some angry dudebros went to cry their eyes out because someone, somewhere, made levi from attack on titans not straight. okay, so me and other people basically went there to troll them. they would write ‘you fangirls need to get laid and leave straight characters alone’, i would respond ‘maybe, but that doesn’t change the fact that levi loves dick’, they would get more angry, things like that. i just love trolling, you know.

okay so, one day, this girl arrives on the page, write something like ‘yeah, these yaoi fangirls... i would not call myself a yaoi fangirl, just a fujoshi (sic) because their coulpes, like naruto/sasuke, don't make sense. they don’t respect the story’ so i was like ‘yeah, you can see them as not romantic, but maybe someone can, i mean, we are talking about naruto and sasuke, it’s not a crack pairing and even if it was, so what?’ and this went for like 400 comments.>’you can’t ship this coulpe, it doesn’t make sense, you are “changing the gender (sic) of two straight characters, in every spokon the characters are straight until told otherwise (sic)” not like couple x’>’??? but couple x is not canon, how does it works?’>’they make sense because the author wants you to ship them’>'???? but they are not canon. why the fanservice and the subtext with your ship are okay, and others not?'and so on. basically the only couples who made sense were the ones she liked.

i had seen her facebook status when she wishes rape and torture upon sakura/naruto shippers, she got quite famous in the italian side of facebook last winter (or at least famous enough for me to know her existence, she was already famous in some anime fandoms i guess), but i always had problems with names, so i hadn’t figured out the girl i was flaming with was her. in the end she even got banned from the dudebros page because of her threats.

yesterday i went to her new facebook page and idk, man. i really don’t know what to think. she’s like the worst part of tumblr but... more stupid. like she wishes rape upon real girls not because victims of abuse can be triggered (with a non-abusive shit #logic) but because she feel like she have to defend this characters. she has a twisted idea of what art is (’art affect real life because people watch it and learn, and because of this, the only pieces of art who are remined after 20 years, like dawson’s creek and smallville (???) are the ones where good wins over evil’) and tbh, i can’t for the love of god, understand what she wants to say half of the time. she had a saint seiya page too, where she accused the shippers of her notp to be the cause of paris’ attacks and the earthquake in nepal. idk, she is like sjw on tumblr meets moige, but on drugs.
