So Evilore didn't confess about the incident and said that he's bringing back NeoGAF online and getting rid of Off-topic. To me, OT was one of the best places on there for meeting a lot of great groups in sub-threads. What do you make out of all this?

GAF is back up now, and every thread I’m subscribed to is all people organizing ways to contact each other outside of the forum so they can get out and never look back. The only thread that isn’t really that is the Indie Developer thread, which will be the biggest casualty for me. That was one of my favorite threads on GAF and some people found my game OverBite through that thread.

I say let GAF burn, though. Reading through the Waypoint article yesterday and seeing a deeper dive on Evilore’s past conduct and his ways of treating women in the past… He’s very much a “dudebro alpha male” kind of guy in the worst way.

And, like, the statement he made when GAF came back up? It sounds like 100% bullshit. Just compare the he-said-she-said statements:

She Said: This kind of thing happens sometimes in my line of work, so I forgave him for trying to have sex with me while I was puking my guts out from alcohol poisoning and we stayed friends (for a while, until a separate incident years later came between us). I’m not getting revenge, I don’t want to ruin his life, and the post I made about the incident wasn’t even public.

He Said: She has mental problems! It’s all lies!

Her response is nuanced and understanding. She worked in Hollywood and had encountered scenarios like this before, and handled things in ways that made her comfortable. They remained friends, at least for a time. No harm, no foul, right?

His response is “she’s crazy.” Which is very… typical dudebro, I guess? It’s a super basic “NUH-UH, MY HAND WASN’T IN THE COOKIE JAR” response. It may as well be an open admission of guilt for how transparent it feels.

Other things with his statement don’t line up either – he claims he was in constant contact with his mod team on what to do about this, when the Waypoint article hours earlier had interviews with a couple of the former mods that straight up admitted the reason they abandoned their posts is because Evilore is difficult to contact and wasn’t talking to anyone (something characteristic of him during previous GAF crises).

Unquestionably, he seems like someone who is not to be trusted in this scenario.

I am going to miss a lot about GAF, and no replacement is ever going to be the same kind of nexus that site was, but I don’t know how anyone in good conscience can continue to post with somebody like Evilore running the show. It’s a bad place and is only going to get worse from here on out.

I'm now worried that many other sites may actually be run by assholes of similar magnitude to Evilore, and honestly feel a bit like dropping off communities entirely because of that.

My advice is to NOT go become an anti-social hermit who is afraid that everyone around them may or may not be a bad person. Don’t do that. Don’t pass judgment on people until AFTER you know they’re jerks.

It’s the old “if a tree falls in the forest and nobody is around to hear it, did it make a sound?”

If somebody runs a community you love, but they’re secretly a serial murderer, and you NEVER FIND OUT they’re a serial murderer, does that invalidate how much you love the community?

You can worry yourself to death thinking about these kinds of what-if scenarios. Don’t. Enjoy what you like, and if somebody’s skeletons fall out of their closet, well, deal with it when it happens. But don’t sit and wait for those skeletons, so sure they’ll fall out at any second, because there’s also no guarantee that they’re actually in there.

Paranoia is never a good thing.
