It was unusual. Well, the eerie silence that filled the bunker from top to bottom. Except for when you stood up and took a step. Every tiny noise echoed — you could drop a feather in the Deans empty room and hear it all the way to the library. That was because Dean had the Mark Of Cain and just so happened to die — which caused the fucking mark to turn him to a demon. Not because of possession, no, it was purely Dean controlling his body.

It was no biggie, because the boys got through thick and thin — except there was maybe a little problem.. It was that you guys couldn't exactly help Dean without Dean there.. present physically — right..? And that's exactly what your problem was — Dean was M.I.A. and nobody had a clue on where he was or with whom he was. And that had a whole search party out for him. Castiel, Sam, Jody, Donna.. every and any hunter would call if they saw him.

That lead to why you were babysitting the bunker. If a hunter called, you'd simply fly there. And Castiel couldn't do it due to some struggles he had with controlling his flying.. and none of you guys could afford a fail. You needed some good news. And you agreed so now you were left pacing around the bunker, every step you took echoing through the bunker.

The clanks of your shoe against the pavement weren't as quiet as you'd expected. It was like you could set off an entire earthquake with each step. God — you were so bored you were analyzing everything and observing to the point where you see things you never did before.

For example, you noticed the amount of books that had a bunch of dust particles on their spines, the top edges and at the bottom of them. And — there was one particular wooden plank in the library that when you stepped over, would groan. There was also a continious hum of the fridge whenever you walked into the hallway and past the kitchen. Which would fade out further down and come at a complete stop when you stood infront of Deans room —

Deans room. A frown settled on your face. You weren't familiar with the human emotions — but you presumed this one could be connected to melancholy you think it was. You've read about that somewhere. It was connected to sadness. But you shouldn't know how that feels.

Like, you were a full blown angel. You shouldn't feel human-like things. You weren't exactly on the rocky, terrestrial planet which was earth every single day. This was actually your first time being here for a longer period of time. All you knew before was that it was a solid and active surface with mountains, valleys, canyons, plains and more. But you never explored much and never felt the desire to do so.

Not until you ended up being asked by Castiel to come down a couple of times. And you agreed hesitantly, it incredibly strange. You were in a vessel, that could describe how you'd look if you were human. But you weren't human.. whatever, that wasn't important. What was important was that during the period where he asked for help, you popped in here and there or when the boys prayed. Not every single time because you had your own things to tend too. But they were grateful for the help.

Despite basically being put on the blacklist now for all the angels and heaven due to you deciding to help the Winchester's and Castiel, which both of them had a reputation of killing a bunch of angels — you felt like it was a sacrifice that was up to you to make. Which you felt proud of making. Because checking in here and there became normal and even something you looked forward too, helping everyone — and may or may not aswell as seeing the older Winchester.

You hadn't known or seen him — heard of, yeah but not met until you helped them out. He was a bit rough around the edges, extremely rude toward you at first — because he didn't trust angels. Which was understandable. With time, he warmed up enough to you to pray as a form of communication on occasion. You'd sometimes move around some objects so he knew you heard. You both had a thing that felt very dear to you. You genuinely would get concerned when you didn't hear from Dean at least once a month.

And you didn't know how to feel about it. Because you weren't human. You didn't have the mind to feel emotions, feel what humans felt. You felt numb to most things. It was a scary thing to experience, because imagine being a loyal and obedient angel — a favorited angel, who was also beloved by many. And then you became fond of humanity. All because of a single human. Hell, if you hadn't met Dean and became who you are today, you'd just consider squashing him like a bug. That's how weak he truly was in comparison to you.

But here you were, have you had an idea of what happiness was? Nope. Sadness? No. Anger? What even are these words? Aren't they just here to describe how someone is acting that? Because your perspective of emotions were blurry — because you don't know what they are enough to really care. You didn't have a grasp on what it was, really.

You saw nothing special about them. Until now. Standing at the doorway of Deans room. Pondering and reminiscing. Your eyes flew from one part of the room to another. The sheets untouched but slightly messy and they had the same note Dean gave Sam before he left on the pillow. His handwriting. He wrote it before he willingly left. You just stood there, unsure of what to think or feel. A moment passed before Deans scent finally hit your nostrils. The aftershave smell, his cologne, a hint of alcohol and a bit of a.. cigarette smell that you could tell just in the slightest bit that humans wouldn't tell.

A memory you had that stuck to you. It was one where Dean would put his duffle bag on his desk before lazily throwing himself on his bed, settling in and getting all cozy. Then you knocked, he'd sigh before telling you an almost inaudible little 'come in' and you'd enter. Dean would ask what you were doing before you asked him a couple of questions. And that night you guys spoke the entire night. It was fun.

You'd genuinely do anything to be able to have a repeat of that event.

A sigh escaped your lips before you made your way back to the library. Just to make sure that nobody called during the time you'd been busy daydreaming or whatever. Once you made it, your hands reached out and grabbed the smartphones, clicking their power button so they turn on, just to get nothing. You were about to just place the phone back on the flat, wooden surface — until you sucked in quite a deep breath, inhaling a familiar smell.

You were about to just brush it off as nothing when it got stronger. Your eyebrows furrowed and you blinked. Thoughts filled your head and you turned your head over your shoulder. Nothing. The distinctive smell started to subside. Okay.. maybe your mind was just playing tricks and you were just paranoid after Deans absence.

Until it came back. Hell, you might even have to say stronger than the first two times. And then it hit you. Aftershave, a cologne you couldn't ever put your finger on what it smelt like, a heavy stench of alcohol and smell of sex — jesus christ, the same hint of cigarettes. And you knew this couldn't be a paranoid joke. Your hands grip tightend on the smartphone.

The recognizable voice chuckled behind you. "Sweetheart, I know you know that i'm here. Don't be shy, show me that pretty face." His voice was mocking, maybe even straight up cruel because of how extreme the way he said it. The hairs on the back of your neck stood up and you had goosebumps. You were certainly terrified — unknowing of what could possibly come your way when it came to Dean as a demon.

"I know you can hear me, c'mon. Pretty angel like you doesn't like to take orders? Hm? What if I was God? Told ya too obliderate all of humanity. Wipe the slate clean. Start over. Or told you to fucking look at me because I won't be asking another time." Deans — demon Deans voice boomed throughout the library. The old you would probably be ignoring him. But you weren't exactly 'the old you'. You were.. simply present you.

So, you spun around on your heels, your eyes taking a moment to drag up from his shoes. And then you met his emerald green eyes. Usually they were majestic and amazing to look at. But this wasn't Dean Dean. Because you saw his piercing eyes and the glint of dark, malevolent emerald green eyes. It left you speechless. And not in a good way. Nope, exactly the opposite.

"Uh huh, following instructions all proper. Makin' me feel all high and mighty, sweets." He let out a low chuckle, his eyes observing you. As if he had an idea that you were probably planning on just getting the hell away. He hummed, clicking his tongue. "Not too fast, Mary. We just reunited, I missed you real bad." He frowned — trying to impersonate being sad.

You just furrowed your eyebrows, clearly displeased. "What're you even planning on doing with me?" He shrugged, "That depends on what you want to do, sweetheart. I don't do shit without consent." You scoffed in amusement. "A demon refusing to do something without consent? What is this? A bad dream?" You quickly shut up when Dean simply glared at you. "I take that back." "Good girl." And that made your knees weak. I mean, fuck it was still the same looking same green-eyed man in front of you, with the same deep voice.

But it wasn't exactly him. You knew that. But was it bad a part of you just.. simply couldn't care less? "I don't want you to do anything." He simply let out a laugh. "Sure. You're a prude anyway, d'you even know what there is for me t'do to you? Like I don't know, show you what sex is, stick my fingers in you or my cock while i'm at it. Betcha would like that." You accidentally choked on your spit at that. "Huh?" You said between some coughs.

"Didn't ya hear me?" He asked, skeptical. A moment passed where you just stared at him, all wide-eyed. "I asked you a fuckin' question." He added, stern now. "Oh — I uh, no I wouldn't —" He didn't respond to that, just took step by step, every step slowly approaching you, the wooden floorboards groaning under his newly added weight. "Y'sure? You wouldn't want me t'just turn you 'round and slip in nnice 'n slow. Wonder if you're tight." You just stared at him, lips parted. He smirked, the right side of his mouth tugging upward.

He then decided to simply lean down, his head closer and closer to yours, lips almost touching. You felt his breath on your lips and he most likely felt yours on his. Your eyes slowly travelled down — they lingered over his nose with the small bump — then his cheeks and nose which had the faintest freckles dusted around and finally down to his plump lips. You cleared your throat. "Just say no 'n i'll leave y'alone." He spoke, his tone mocking as always. "But i'm sure an innocent, perfect little angel like you won't accept big, bad demon like me."

You just noticed him lean in closer, your lips basically touching if either you or him accidentally sneezed. "And? No complaints?" He chuckled, in a cruel way — which you hadn't noticed, but even if you did, you probably couldn't really care less. And he dragged it out, obviously. Just sucking in a deep breath, his eyes darting from your eyes down to your lips. You were sure you were slowly coming to a realization on what you were exactly doing.

But before you had any time to exactly protest, his lips came down, clashing against yours. His hand immediately touching you all over.. singular because his right hand was busy wrapped around your throat, squeezing lightly to make your airway a bit tighter. But to necessairily cut it off. He chuckled when your lips vibrated against his because you whined in the kiss — but the kiss trapped the noise from being any louder.

"Thought you were a good lil' angel. Seems like the exact opposite. 'Cause I ain't gonna be nice, baby. Gonna bend y'over on the table, fuck y'all nice 'n good, make sure your brain s'all fuzzy 'n fucked out." He promised. Your lips were chasing his as you both had a hot and sloppy makeout. Deans left hand paused at your clothed ass, just squeezing before pulling away from the kiss.

"Bend over the table." He ordered, his right hand leaving your throat and his left hand hesitantly letting go of your ass before he removed it. "But what about the door anyone could walk i —" He shot you a sharp glare, not before blinking and when his eyelids lifted, his eyes were pure black. No iris in sight. Pun not intended. You gulped and just decided to stay intact before turning back around. Mind you, phone still clenched between your fingers.

Dean wasted no time, his hips ground against yours. Around four layers of clothes not providing the friction he gave. His hand went to your lower back before he slowly bent you over. He had a smug smirk on his face as to how easily you followed along with what he made you do. But you didn't see that because your eyes were currently focused on the bookshelves in front of you. All you could do was hear and wait patiently for something to happen.

And honestly — this whole situation escalated so fast it would probably be a blur by tomorrow. As if it never happened and you would be like those.. drunk people you've seen on the television screens and in bars. At least you hoped so, because you were sure fucking a demon wouldn't exactly be a list of things of what to do as a fucking angel. Besides, maybe it was just the way demon Dean attracted you. He was simply Dean.. just less Dean and add some.. more insanity to him.

You were wondering what Dean was doing before you looked over your shoulder, seeing Dean take in the view. Before his right hand landed on your hip. You trapped your bottom lip between your teeth. "Uh-huh, a moment 'go you were all whiny 'n bitchy 'bout me fuckin' ya but now you're all slutty, ain't that right?" He just raised his brows. You just rolled your eyes. "Oh? Gonna act all bitchy again?" He tutted, his left hand going to your hair and his fingers wrapped around a good chunk of your hair, he tugged on it.

"Anythin' ya wanna add?" He sneered. You shook your head. Despite being an angel, you still felt the burn of the hair strands being tugged on your vessels head. "No — no." You managed to get out, he seemed pleased enough. "That's what I fuckin' thought." He let go of the pieces of hair, but his hand shoved your head down onto the table. It wad harsh. "Don't move or I swear t'god y'won't be able too anymore."

And you knew he was not joking so you just let the side of your face rest on the wooden table, your hand let go of that phone and they travelled down to the edge of the table, your hands gripped onto it and you weren't exactly experiences in this — but Dean knew what he was doing. You at least assumed — because you weren't sure how this whole thing would go down. "Will this hurt?" "What'dya fuckin' expect?" His response was filled with irritation.

You wiggled your hips as you just heard his belt clanking as he undid it. All you could do pretty much is just wait because you did not want to disobey Dean. "Y'fuckin' want this, right?" He asked which he then grumbled something under his breath. You nodded before he rolled his eyes. "A fuckin' verbal response please?" "Yeah —" And he immediately continued with what he was doing.

You couldn't see anything so after a little, Deans hands went on your body, his fingers hooked underneath the waistband of your pants. His hands were warm in contrast of your colder skin. He tugged your pants down as fast as he could. He seemed like he wasn't planning on wasting a single second. Because holy jesus the 180 turns that keep taking you by surprise just keep going. You sucked in a breath when Deans fingers now went to your panties. His index teased your entrance through the thin fabric seperating them.

He then — without much warning pulled your panties to the side with the same index finger, his left hand gripping your hip and his calloused thumb after years of hunting and labor scratched your skin a little. You felt something tease your entrance. A gaspy breath escaped Dean from behind you. "Y'feel so wet. Hopefully s'enough t'act as lube." And then you felt him push in. His tip was in and you let out a moan, eyes fluttering shut.

He chuckled. "Jeez, baby. That fuckin' cunt s'suckin me in perfectly. Clenchin' 'round me real tight, too. Sad your pretty lil' vessel ain't a fuckin' virgin. Woulda enjoyed poppin' two cherries at once." He now pushed in deeper. His right hand went under your shirt, you just now realized because he was groping your boobs, his index and middle finger twisting your nipple as you let out a whine. "Fuck." You exclaimed.

"Real filthy. Never expected an angel like you squeezin' my cock so tight." He taunted, he bottomed out. Your walls clenched around him and relaxed before repeating that action, pants escaped your lips. You could feel every vein, the size of him and the way he almost split you into two. Dean boasted about sex all the time after he slept with girls. You never knew how right he was until now. Because jesus fucking christ you weren't expecting it to feel this good. You were probably zoned out because Dean spanked your ass. "Come back t'me, whore. Stick a fuckin' dick in ya 'n you'll become all inresponsive like a cock whore." He scoffed.

"C'mon, as I was sayin', open up that mouth." He ordered, still deep in you without moving. You fluttered your eyes open, his wrist right in your eyesight. He folded himself over you, his chest flush against your back. His right hand no longer teasing your boobs. Which was probably why his wrist was right in front of you. But it was because he had sliced his skin open a little under. "You're enough of a slut t'take a demons dick. I'll fuckin' move when ya suck on demon blood. Like Sammy, except a pretty lil' thing like y'does it. Drink up, angel." The crimson red substance was right in front of you.

Your eyes widened. "I —" Jesus christ. You were an angel getting dicked down by a fucking demon. You were in far too deep right now. You leaned forward slightly. "That's it, atta girl." He praised, you didn't pay attention to it if it had an underlaying cruel tone under his words. You just focused on the disgusting demon blood you were about to consume. Your lips wrapped around the wound, the iron — y taste immediately sitting on your tastebuds. That's when you didn't even have time to complain about the thick substance you swallowed —

Because Dean pulled all the way out — well, almost because his tip was still in you. Then he slammed his hips forward, you would've moaned had his arm — and blood you were consuming with some dribbling down your chin onto the wooden table — not been muffling you. Your eyes rolled to the back of your head. "Fuck, shoulda fucked this pussy a while 'go. Was actually thinkin' bout it." He panted and slowly started a harsh, relentless and fast pace from the get go.

You had time to adjust at the beginning, but now he was just careless, fucking away all and every thought you had. At some point, the table was shaking due to the hard thrusts. Your hips were probably gonna be bruised with the edge of the table digging into your skin.

You heard him groan and gasp behind you, a breathy chuckle escaping him. "So much for innocent angel."

That made you whine — well, as best as you could, still lapping up the blood that was basically like a faucet eacaping him. You were being fucked so good and hard — skin slapping against skin echoing — the light creaks of the table shaking and Deans pants were so incrediblely lewd and loud.

It seemed like there was no end in sight. Except you felt something build up in your abdomen — you weren't sure what it was. If you didn't know how to explain emotions, whatever this was you probably couldn't, either.

You were right there. Until the bunker door opened, your eyes widened and you were surprised Dean didn't even try to stop, he just hummed in amusement. "Hey! We're home —" Sam called out with Castiel whispering something to him. "Yeah — I know." Sam said — probably in response to Castiel. Before he started speaking up once more, his boots clanking against the metal staircase.

"Hello? Anyone home —" Sam's voice died in his throat when Castiels jaw dropped. "Oh." Your eyes flew to them as their eyes were wide. "Oh hey, look. We got an audience. Demon fuckin' an angel in front of their friends. Ain't that funny?" Dean kept going, not a care in the world.

You were fucking embarrassed. And that was for fucking sure.

Hey everyone, Soar here! I was planning on writing this post up for a month or so and decided to sit down today to briefly address it. This post isn’t going to be muse-centric to my character, as opposed to experience-centric for certain muses.

This post pertains to trauma and how it either spawns, reacts, or changes the way a character may respond to different stimuli like sounds, visuals, scents or associations through dialogue, imagery, location, or people based on their experiences/memories/upbringing/etc. 

NOTE: The purpose of this post isn’t directed to specific traumas. Instead, it’s towards the perception of trauma and the reactions that may come out of it. 

To preface the topic, trauma is not defined by the acts. More so, it is a response to any event that besets the individual when it comes to their coping, understanding/altering/conveying negative emotions, setting self-value and feeling/understanding of emotions and experiences. The event, no matter its frequency, has created a change in an array of ways, from behavioral to physical reactions, those being only two examples. Being a witness or being directly involved also does not change its significance. 

As mentioned before, there are triggers that exist in a variety of forms and can elicit reactions that the person may or may not control (or even understand as to why they’re responding that way). It is both laborious and a major effort, for people with trauma to understand it, recover from it, and adapt from it. Many variables and conditions vary per case as some may not have been aware of what they underwent (or they may have normalized it, etc.). 

However, I want to specifically address that these reactions can be/have been perceived poorly. To elaborate, these traumas have been reduced and minimized by writers/OOC conversations based on unpleasant IC interactions. This is more doing with how muns may respond via undermining what has happened in-character in a way that portrays the muse (with trauma) that simplifies a very significant aspect of how trauma has affected them. 

Understandably, without all known information presented in-universe, characters can only work on assumptions and past experiences. Individuals with trauma that act a certain way and that could be perceived negatively by these characters -- but this is based on the fact that this is happening in an existing space that is active and responsive, mimicking our reality.

But, as writers, we should respect and not downplay/narrowly define a character based on reactions from trauma. As well, making jokes about their trauma isn’t usually received well and should be avoided (unless, y’know, y’all joke like that and y’all communicate). Surely, a character could’ve been on edge/defensive and might’ve acted negatively, but that is not their definitive self. They are not who they are based on that interaction solely (and it shouldn’t be used to identify them). Certain traits may arise from trauma, but it is a disservice to use trauma a definer -- more so, it is a harmful conclusion to make.

This is mainly said as what is said OOC can create an image of a character that is both inaccurate and inconsiderate to how the mun has written them. This is not to say to involve the character’s trauma continiously, or to use their trauma as an excuse for certain behaviors. Still, it is an important reason that has affected background, development, behavior, and everything else as that’s the hold trauma has.  TLDR: Please respect a character’s dimensionality, trauma, and their history. Even if your character is or is not directly related to the trauma, and even if they may be treated unfairly/differently because of it, it does not grant you the privilege to down-talk a character or effectively write the character as one-noted. A writer’s effort to expand and explore a character shouldn’t be considered something one-dimensional, considering there are far more variables at play in a character and work placed into creating that.

Presentation

Presenting our film The Last Memory and getting feedback helped me understand my story better. For example, in the presentation I mentioned that we will mostly constuct the film from the continious visual pieces of the daily routines of the chracters: vacuuming the flat, struggling behind the typewriter, cooking lunch, having old friends over. Of course, I need to be careful to also show conflict through daily life. Apart from this, in our initial idea, Derek, the son, by sacrificing his job and getting suspended convinces Andrew, his father, to change his mind and not commit suicide. As one of the lecturers pointed out, the son becomes a selfish character in this situation. The real sacrifice would be if Derek accepted his fathers decision and that helped Andrew understand how much he is loved.

Thoughts On SDCC Supergirl Interview:

Okay so take my thoughts, feelings, and opinions on this matter as you see fit. I know everyone is entitled to their own ideals here and may not take mine seriously since I’m a white, heterosexual woman but I just wanna get mine out there based off what I’ve read, seen, and heard regarding this topic. Here are the things I gathered and taken from this:

1. The interview wasn’t taken seriously from the get go (except for Katie, David, and Odette) which is what pissed me off the most. Your show represents and stands for so much or at least it’s supposed to and if you really give a crap about it, your character, career, and how people see you: answer the damn question seriously and not sing around it. People have questions and have to wait for so long to be able to share them and want answers that matter just like if you asked a question and someone continious tip toed around you avoiding to answer, wouldn’t you be annoyed or upset too? I fucking would so at least answer the best to your ability to proudly represent your show, your characters, and your capabilities as actors/actresses. This is the biggest and largest convention in the country where everything happens (promo, trailer, concept art, future plans, and etc releases) so at least have the heart to understand your purpose here and what it means to people. Yes obviously we don’t expect you to ruin the whole upcoming season for us, but for fucks sake actually act like you give a shit about your jobs and not treat them like a fucking joke because this show has helped and brought many people together more than I think you realize. 2. To all the people calling out Melissa, Chris, Mechad, and Jeremy for being gigantor homophobes. That song they sang about the Supercorp ship vs. the Karamel ship sounds far more condescending, mocking, belittling, and honestly it feels more like an attack than anything. You can hear it their tone and see it through their body language and presence and even Katie, David, and Odette found it awkward and because of that the whole thing was extremely uncomfortable from start to finish. They obviously weren’t expecting to be bombarded by such a fan base for that ship in particular and were more prepared to discuss the ships that were canon confirmed in their show but I don’t think this necessarily makes them homophobics. I know Melissa, Jeremy, Chris, and Mechad all proactively support gay rights and marriage and just because they support these ideals doesn’t necessarily mean they fully understand lgbtq and all that it entails. I know plenty people that they say they support gay rights and marriage and all of lgbtq but are still uncomfortable or can’t handle witnessing any kinds of displays whether public or private which is very naive and hypocritical thinking but I don’t think that’s what caused this to spark and get them in trouble. I think what got them in trouble is when: A. Jeremy tried validating himself by saying he’s a “theater kid” and because of it knows how to properly represent the lgbtq community and insinuated that all “theater kids” are or are not lgbtq. Yea no not how it works. 1st of all, you can’t say stereotypes what kinds and types of people are involved in theater, they all come from mixed backgrounds. Secondly, you can’t validate yourself or your character consentually acting like their experiences are better or worse than others, especially those in the lgbtq community. B. Melissa wasn’t helpful either telling Jeremy he was “so brave” when he told people in regards to the Supercorp ship that he “debunked it.” Being lgbtq, coming out as lgbtq, living as lgbtq, and so on are very brave, strong, and inspring things to do so what’s there to debunk? I obviously don’t know and can’t act like I do, being heterosexual, but I have witnessed some of my friend’s journeys with it and while people are becoming a little more accepting and aware, we’ve still got a LONG fucking way to go to help and better lgbtq equality, representation, and value and this little conversion definitely made me realize how much progress we have to make in educating people what lgbtq means in how we discuss and regard the subject amongst others. 3. Instead channel this energy into something more meaningful and use this experience to raise your voice in a more uplifting and influential way. Share your stories, your thoughts and feelings, your emotions, and what not. Let it all out in the open but just think of how you’d present this information amongst yourself and how you’d want others to present it to you. In this day of society, we should be treating others the way you want to be treated and despite our convictions should continue being kind to 1 another and striving for 1 common goal, coming together. For this we were put into groups to create a structure with the materials around us. The purpose of this was to have a subject to light up with a long continuous exposure. Above is the successful images produced from the shoot. This was a fun workshop as I experimented with the technical aspects of photography.

I experimented with a model in frame to shoot with a different subject matter. The image above is an example of this shoot. This image wasn't particularly successfull due to the focus and facial expression. However, I like the single light source lighting up the image and being presented in the image as a single strobe. I converted this image into black and white to bring out highlights and shadows.

This is then pushed by the newspaper clippings taking over the colourful nature with words, distorting the kids naive reaction and whimsical reaction and being amazed by these wonderful things, replaced by the narrative of the papers and of his dad. 

This use of colours but also the materials of paper mixed with the crayon drawings really propels this notion of child-like innocents being taken away and lost. Until he himself is removed and becoming part of the newspaper and a part of the material, removing himself from the emotional subjective nature of his perspectives. 

This use of different materials different forms of making, different textures, overlays (though one negative is that I don’t think there that well implemented would have been nicer in my opinion to have a more realistic looking overlay) really helps push the story and making it overall emensely effective. 

Lastly a praise must be mentioned to the sound design and voice acting which really helps build and ramp up the tension of the piece and really pushing it to a crescendo.

The new Toyota Corolla

Toyota Corolla, one of the most successful model names in automotive history makes a striking return. Taking over the Auris name badge in South Africa, the Corolla recalls a memorable history in this country – mostly with sedan models, but also the Corolla Conquest and Avante variants of the 80’s and 90’s – and this new hatchback builds on its predecessors celebrated qualities of contemporary design, driving dynamics and efficiency.

DESIGN

With the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) chassis as its basis, the Corolla is longer, lower and therefore sleeker than its Auris predecessor. The striking nose features all-LED lamp clusters, with integral daytime running lights beneath the curved edge of a flatter, clamshell bonnet and narrow upper grille.

Beneath that, trapezoidal lower grille features a new mesh design and a frame that projects powerfully forwards with a grille surround that generates Toyota’s signature ‘catamaran shape’ at the front corners of the car. It emphasises the car’s width and gives the Corolla that aggressive broad, sporting stance.

Like the front, the rear styling is more rounded than before and a 14-degree increase in the angle of the rear screen and muscular haunches above the rear wheel arches combine to give the car a more compact appearance. All-LED light clusters, located as far to the two corners as possible emphasise the car’s width, while the rear bumper styling echoes the ‘catamaran’ look of the front. A lower rear lip features a black-out design matching the; and all versions of the hatchback feature a roof spoiler and shark fin antenna.

The new Corolla hatch comes in six exterior colours, including three new colours – Scarlet Metallic (Red), Oxide Bronze and Caribbean Blue.

INTERIOR

The highest levels of visual and tactile quality were the goals of the dedicated Toyota Motor Europe Sensory Quality team (also responsible for the Toyota C-HR crossover’s acclaimed interior) when styling and designing the Corolla’s drivers and passenger environment.

The result is a spacious, modern and cohesive cabin with new textures, colours and trims that are both ergonomically practical and eye-catchingly styled. The slim instrument panel, for example, is not only key to generating a sense of spaciousness, but it improves forward visibility, while still allowing for the driver to be positioned lower and closer to the car’s centre of gravity for a more engaging driving position.

The driver’s cockpit has that real wrap-around feel and the sporty nature is echoed in a front seat design that has also optimises comfort and reduces fatigue on long journeys. The high-grade Xr models also have slim Alcantara-covered front sports seats with wide shoulder supports that combine with solid, thick side bolsters to really grip your upper body and thighs when cornering.

The revised rear seats feature a new seat cushion material that allows for more even distribution of the occupant’s weight and, as standard, all rear seats can be folded using a remote lever to create a fully flat extension to the loadspace.

ON THE ROAD

That TNGA platform mentioned earlier is the foundation for all Toyota’s future powertrain and vehicle development and the version of this modular platform employed in the Corolla is designated the GA-C. With it, the GA-C brings considerable dynamic handling benefits to the new Corolla range, thanks to it being both being torsionally stiffer (by 60%) and lighter, as well as offering a lower centre of gravity.

Not only does a new multilink rear suspension mean there is less intrusion in the loadspace, allowing for an increase in load volume, but handling stability, steering response and ride comfort are notably improved. The latter is also thanks to a new shock absorber valve design in both front and rear suspension systems also reduces friction by 40% resulting in a smoother and more comfortable ride.

Under that stylish front bonnet is a 1.2-litre four-cylinder turbopetrol engine that delivers 85kW and a constant torque curve of 185 Nm between 1,500 and 4,000 rpm through either a 6-speed manual or a new 10-speed Sport Sequential Shiftmatic Continiously Variable Transmission (CVT). The engine is the same power unit found in the Toyota C-HR and it is good for a brisk 0 to 100 km/h of 9.5 seconds for the manual (10.4 for CVT) and the top speed of 200 km/h (190 for CVT). Fuel consumption has been pegged at 6.1 litres per 100km for both manual and CVT variants.

SAFETY

The Corolla Hatch features a host of active and passive safety features. There are a total of 7 airbags – driver and passenger, along with two side and curtain, as well as one for the driver’s knee – plus Vehicle Stability Control is standard, along with the full suite of electronic aids present (ABS, EBD, Brake Assist and Hill-assist Control). It also comes standard with ISOFIX attachment points for child seats.

WARRANTY AND SERVICE PLAN

All Corolla Hatch models come standard with a 6-services/90 000 km Service Plan and 3-year/100 000 km warranty. Service intervals are set at 12 months/15 000 km.

José Vouillamoz on grape varieties, at MUST 2017

It was great to hear José Vouillamoz present at MUST. He’s a plant scientist with a special interest in grape varieties, and this was the subject of his talk. He began with the news that soon there will be a new edition of Wine Grapes, the reference book he authored together with Julia Harding and Jancis Robinson. This is because since the publication of the first edition, so much more knowledge has come to light.

José posed the important question: what is a grape variety? Each variety starts with a single grape pip that grows into a plant. In the past, when vineyards were planted en foule (not in tidy rows, but each vine individually staked in a random, close-planted arrangement) then it was possible for grape seeds to produce the occasional new vine. First, the seed would need to be eaten by a bird (a passage through a bird’s gut enhances its chance of germinating), then it would need to fall somewhere in the vineyard, and it would have to be allowed to grow and not be cleared out. The wine grower then has to notice the new variety and propagate it through cuttings or layering (both methods are 3-4000 years old).

This propogation is called cloning. The vines are genetically identice. But each time the plant grows you have cell division and the process of multiplication can cause mutations. Most of these are accidents in the DNA and have no visual effect, but some might have spectacular effects such as changing cluster size or colour. These mutations don’t result in new varieties (a new variety can only come from a seed), but new clones. The definition of ‘clone’ is subjective: it’s just when a wine grower decides that a particular vine has desirable features and chooses to clone from it. The more ancient a variety, the more diverse it is in clones. So the fact that there are lots of Pinot Noir clones doesn’t mean that Pinot is genetically unstable, just that it is an old variety.

To have a new variety, you need a father and a mother: every grape variety has parents. It seems simple but it isn’t always. Pinot Noir, Gris and Blanc are all the same variety that has undergone colour mutations. Pinot Noir is the original, and has mutated to become Gris and Blanc. For example, you sometimes see Pinot Noir clusters on one branch and Pinot Blanc clusters on another branch of the same vine. Savagnin, also known as Traminer, is  very similar in this regard. There’s Traminer Blanc, Traminer Rot (Savagnin Rose) and Gewürztraminer (Savagnin Rose Aromatique).

Not everyone agrees with this. ‘I’m struggling with colleagues to show them that I am right and they are wrong,’ jokes José, but his definition is the sensible one, although it’s hard for us not to think of the three Pinots as different varieties. He showed that you get similar mutations in Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon, and presumably other red grapes,

José is frustrated by some Italian professors who talk about ‘polyclonal’ varieties, such as Sangiovese. ‘You can’t have one variety coming from different seeds. There are no polyclonal varieties. If you multiply any grape by seeds you get a different variety. Most of the time this is the result of self-fertilization, and it produces a different variety,’ he explains. In Italy in some vineyards they have Sangiovese grown from seed and call it Sangiovese. It’s not: it’s a different variety.

José has done lots of work with DNA analysis to construct family trees of related varieties. He’s found that contrary to what was expected, there are relatively few origins of many of the varieties we know. He came up the concept of founder varieties such as Gouais Blanc, Savagnin and Pinot, each of which gave rise to many different varieties, and has identified 13 of these founders in western Europe. He’s also found them in Georgia and Greece.

Kym Andersen has compiled a list of the world’s Top 35 varieties, and the top 10 come from just 3 countries: Spain, France and Italy. José thinks it is odd that the world is relying on the ampelographic heritage of three countries.

One of his interests is in identifying the missing links: obscure varieties that have almost been forgotten. In the 19th century the diseases powdery and downy mildew, plus phylloxera created a viticultural bottleneck. While there is no evidence that varieties were lost, lots of varieties were forgotten as widescale replanting with grafted vines took place. Many times, people would just choose the easiest varieties,

He then went on to describe some of the obscure varieties that actually played important roles in the viticultural family tree. Chardonnay is a natural crossing of Pinot and Gouais blanc. Gouais Blanc is an important founder variety that was actually banned a number of times (it has very high acidity), yet it is the parent of Chardonnay.

Merlot is a cross between Cabernet Franc and a rare variety called Magdaleine Noire des Charentes. There are just five old vines of Magdaleine left in France. For a long time its role as a parent of Merlot was unknown.

What about Sangiovese? Its parentage was a mystery for a long time. People thought it was either a child of Ciliegiolo or a parent of Ciliegiolo. José found that Ciliegiolo was actually one of its parents, and then went looking for the other one. It turns out to be Calabrese de Montenuova, an obscure variety that was rescued in the gulf of Naples from the bank of Lago d’Averno. So for the Tuscans, it was a big shock to find out that their beloved Sangiovese was half Calabrian.

Tribidrag, also known as Zinfandel, was introduced to California in the 1820s. It is not American in origin, and its real identity was revealed through work by Carole Meredith and coleagues, who carried out what has been dubbed the ‘Zinquest’. They knew that Primitivo was the same variety, but that its origins weren’t Italian. Eventually they found out that its origin is in Croatia. In 2001 they found a grape called Crljenak Kastelanski, which was identical to Tribidrag.

Carmenere from Bordeaux was confused with Merlot in Chile until 1994. When this was discovered, the Chileans decided to keep it, and are now proud to be the country where this grape has survived. It turns out that it’s the same variety as the Chinese Cabernet Gernischt.

There were just 27 hectares left in France but there are 7000 ha in chile and more than 1000 in China.

Cot is a grape from Cahors, known also as Noir de Pressac or Malbeck (which was the name of doctor who propagated it). It was introduced into argentina in 1868 and they forgot the ‘k’, making it Malbec. There are 1000 hectares in France, but 26 000 in Argentina.

José finished by making his guess as to which varieties will be the new stars of the future, but which are currently obscure. He says that this is largely wishful thinking.

Italy has 377 varieties commercially to make wine.

Timorasso 20 ha currently – Piemonte white variety very aromatic, not easy to grow but many producers replanting this. The new star.

Mammolo 147 ha – Tuscany – grown in Corsica too. Much fruit, soft tannins

Nieddera 60 ha – Sardinia – has structure and nice body and has been rescued by Contini

Teroldego 839 ha – Trentino – lots of colour and fruit, very alpine. Fresh with bitterness. Grows pergola or gobelet. See Foradori for good examples.

France 

Douce Noir 2 ha – Savoie. Used to be the most widespread variety in the region. In Argentina they have more than 18 600 ha of this, which they call Bonarda.

Counoise 443 ha – South of France, and one of the permitted varieties in Chateauneuf – brings spices – soft and aromatic

Tibouren 445 ha- Provence, mostly rose wines but excellent reds, such as Clos Sibon. Wines with personality, structure and fruity aromas.

Spain 

Graciano 1468 ha – ‘I’d like to see more of this,’ says José. ‘I love these wines in Sardinia.’ Tinta Miuda in Portugal

Garro 2 ha – part of the Torres rescue program in Catalonia. Very promising.

Why we do the things we do at ChalkBox: New Cycle Monday 20th!

OUR PROGRAMMING:

It is time for a note on our fitness programming. We are coming out of long cycle started all the way back summer 2016. We have noticed significant improvements in your fitness. We program the in cycles of 6 weeks. Our focus in the cycle starting Monday 20th will be the Olympic Lifts Clean & Jerks, Snatch and gymnastics movements like muscle ups and hand stand push ups. Yes we know it takes time to master all these movements and that's why we practise them. Also these movements are all functional and by working through these lifts and gymnastic we are working same time on your fitness :-).

The Context

We updated our program in August and embarked on 25 weeks long cycle ending January 2017. The overriding theme of the cycle is building a stronger aerobic & strength base using the conclusions from the last Check In in April. 

Looking back the majority of training days ( Monday - Friday) have been focused on developing strength  (Monday & Wednesday) and your aerobic systems (Tuesday & Thursday) whilst Friday was Skill day. Weekends are reserved for truly community workouts and are really intended to workout together, suffer together and enjoy the community aspect. We hear that you enjoy the format of the Saturday mornings and we will not change it.

Broadening the Base

It is time now to add some different building blocks to your General Physical Preparedness.

WE ARE MAKING 2 CHANGES:

1) MIND OVER MATTER IS MOVING CENTRAL STAGE

Great athletes are often praised for their mental thoughnes. This is not something people are born with this is something you can develop. Mental Thoughness applies to all things in life and as well to fitness. A general description of mind over matter is:  the use of will power to overcome physicial problems. Applying that to our workouts it can mean many things to different people from a member doing his or hers first pull up to setting a new PB in the Clean & Jerk.

We believe in working in the present moment is important but we believe in 1 step at the time setting mini goals and celebrate them when you complete them.

2) RX LEVEL WILL BE REMOVED AND ONLY BE GIVEN FOR CERTAIN WODS

We believe by removing RX for workouts it will free up the mind to really focus on consistent movement first followed by adding load when earned.

   Now we have shared with you the context we are introducing 3 different sessions namely:

 Movement & Skills Session (A)

Fitness Session (B)

Mental Thoughness Session (B) + (C)

What is a Movement & Skills Session?

What you can expect on a M&S day is practise. We believe life is continious practise so is CrossFit. No one is ever finished in mastering a movement e.g. squat or skill e.g. double under. There's some well known research saying it takes ten thousand hours of practice to achieve mastery in a field.

Therefore on M&S day you will be practising the most common movements in CrossFit varying from squats, dead lifts, push ups to more complex Olympic Lifts and Gymnastics. As these are practise session there will be NO RX levels provided. Every member will be required to work at their own level. We believe taking the RX level away will free up the mind to get you more focused on moving well before you add weight.

 What is a Fitness Session?

CrossFit defines fitness as increased work capacity across broad time and model domains. So you will be running, rowing, biking, jumping, lifting, carrying, pushing pulling and more across different time intervals in different formats.

Is that new? No it isn't. It is CrossFit and you have been all along! In these session we will continue to provide you with RX levels as we believe it is a way to measure your progress. Obviously all workouts are for all abilities and scalable.

What is a Mental Thoughnes Session?

This will be a day you will have to challenge yourself mentally, break down a wall and deal with fight or flight emotions! Sounds dramatic but you have been doing that on many occasion already. By designating certain days to these types of workouts we envisage that you will come in with a different mind set than per usual.

So what's different you might ask as for some the workouts are a challenge already? The devil sits in the detail. The WODs are designed to be low skill and low weight bearing. For example 100 burpees for time. Everyone should be able to do some form of burpee 😃 and everyone should be able to finish it.... at whatever time domain at your current fitness level. There's no limit  here. Progress is measured very easily. Try to beat Coach Agnes. She completes 100 burpees under 5 minutes. Again there's no RX level here either.

Is this really new? No it isn't you have been doing this however what new is that we will label the sessions as such so you can prepare your mind. Remember we are now focused on Mind over Matter: the use of will power to overcome physical issues.

 Will this get me fit?

Oh yes - the goal hasn't changed building a stronger aerobic & strength base is goal of the cycle. Every workout will be one that helps you to progress further on your fitness journey. By providing you with more context we envisage that you will be able to create better movement patterns and progress more quickly.
