EXERCISE 4: Unrolling a Developable Surface.
GROUP MEMBERS: Allegra Martschenko, Amelia Kenna, Genevieve Garlock
DESCRIPTION: Our first model (the hexagon based, gramophone inspired one) pulled the profile curve in the x, y, and z plane to create a double curvature to test the possibilities of plastic. We filled it with trash in one photo both to throw it into contrast with its background as well as to highlight the waste that was produced in the process of building the model--despite being a recycled plastic it is still guilty of producing more plastic and thus more pollutants.
Our second model (the spiked beast) uses a simple curve as a base to create a donut, but experimented with the tabs. We knew that part of the allure of plastic is its transparency--so we moved to manipulate that. We added as many tabs and as many sides as we reasonably could and then lengthened the tabs, moving to create an object chaotic with overlapping plastic that would complicate transparency. In doing so, we emphasized the reflectiveness of the surface, creating a dense, hard to read piece out of a see through material.

After completing the Skills Spectrum, I identified Iterative, Learning from Failure, and Embracing Ambiguity to be the areas I would like to improve. I struggle with recognizing that my first idea is not always the best idea. I get inspired quickly so I often take my first idea and run with it instead of considering the other possibilities. I sometimes get anxious when I consider the possible ways the constraints of other options will impact the overall design. This is also something I am working on in my Graphic Design class this semester as our project outlines often have a list of constraints. I think the best way for me to tackle these two mindsets would be to learn from failure, which is why I listed that as my third skill to focus on this semester.

Your personal elements
What are your strengths? Which elements represent areas you’d like to improve? Which element comes out the strongest? How can you tell? Do you feel balanced, or more like you lean towards one or two energies more than the others? Which is your ‘weakest’ element?
– Beth Maiden, The Alternative Tarot Course
I’m a very airy personality, Aquarius with Gemini rising here. Mercury (also air) is in Aquarius in my natal chart as well. These aspects play themselves out pretty obviously in my life: I’m into knowledge, information, learning. My work largely relies on communicating information.
I’ve also got a lot of the fire element. I’m creative and artistic, and can be ambitious and temperamental.
These elements are pretty well balanced by earth. I have a happy, stable home life, and I’m generous (perhaps too much so sometimes), not greedy. I could be better with money, however.
Water-wise... there’s a puzzle. My love life is very good. Love my hubby like crazy. I struggle with making friends other than him, however. I feel things deeply, and it’s hard to open myself up to others, both because it’s exhausting to invest myself deeply in many people, and because I’ve been hurt by friends in the past. I would say water is the element where I need the most work, followed by earth.

EXERCISE 4 PART 1: Unrolling a Developable Surface.
This exercise will use the Zund to cut recycled plastic. The variety of forms possible based on a profile curve speak to the malleability and adaptability of plastic. I created a design with exaggerated curvature in multiple locations that could be possible if the tab sizes could change in size to map to the curve. My second design is subtler--but I believe with tabs added to the shape even the most basic shape would suddenly be much more visually compelling.
This exercise focuses on systems of assembly
