Supernatural Fun Fact:
Season 6 Episode 7 Family Matters (The one where we learn that Sam doesn't have a soul) Dean says the line "I'm sorry. One more time, like I'm five." This aired November 5, 2010
The Subreddit /explainlikeimfive (Explain Like I'm Five) was established Jul 28, 2011
It is not impossible that the name of this subreddit is a reference, intentionally or not, to Dean Winchester. Now, I don't recall a lot about life before 2011, I am sure the phrase was in use before then.
At least. I really hope so. But the thought will now forever haunt me.

Because the water in a river sweeps all the lighter materials downstream. Think about it. Where did all the dirt and rock off the grand canyon go?
Gold is heavy, so it's more difficult for the water to move downstream, so it stays in the river bed at the bottom, usually getting stuck in small cracks or crevices.
Additionally heavy rainfall will sweep a whole bunch of dirt and rocks (and gold) into a river. The lighter stuff will get washed downstream, and the gold and other heavy stuff will get stuck at the bottom of the river.
This happens again and again over tens of thousands of years until the river bed is very heavy with gold and other heavy materials. - blandge

Reddit is crazy to me because r/stockmarket somehow has less fear mongering about china than, like, r/explainlikeimfive or a random video game subreddit
frustration within the US about the economy has been causing tides to turn in some more business oriented areas of reddit. not that they *like* china, but are viewing the US in a more negative light here because of trump. there were a lot of redditors defending deepseek for similar reasons: their hatred for US tech oligarchs is so pronounced right now. who knew it would be trump that got reddit thinking more critically about china?

NPD Culture is people fucking ignoring me on PURPOSE after THEY were the ones in the wrong. It's not MY fault you have the IQ of a fucking qtip. I shouldn't have to explain super simple shit to you, and then you're getting mad that I'm "treating you like a child" for using a FUCKING METAPHOR?? FOR REFERENCING r/EXPLAINLIKEIMFIVE ?? How dare you get a fucking attitude with me when I'm taking the time out of my day to try and express my emotions to you and explain a concept you should be able to understand already. And bitches wonder why I never fucking open up to anyone. I don't owe you shit you're fucking below me. I tried SO HARD to be polite when I was irritated with you and your response was to fucking be a douchebag about it. Maybe next time I'll just fucking degrade you like I wanted to.
I hate people being stupid. I hate being angry. People should just fucking understand automatically like I need them to.

ELI5: Why do we consider large eyes in cartoon characters to be cute, but if we saw similar sized eyes in life we'd probably be disturbed by the oddity? : r/explainlikeimfive

It has to do with the uncanny valley. As something gets closer and closer to looking like a person, we find it more relatable. That's why we like puppies more than lobsters (for the most part).
The uncanny valley is a point where something is really close to looking human, and how appealing we find it suddenly drops off sharply. For example, poorly done CGI humans come across as really creepy when they're trying to be too realistic.
The reason that it happens is that if something looks really close to human, we start looking for really minute details in its face. We try to read small details like facial expressions and such, many of which are almost imperceptibly small changes in the face. The difference between "happy eyes" and "sad eyes," for instance, seems huge, but it's actually a difference of only a few millimeters. Our brains are just really good at picking up those tiny differences.
When something looks pretty much human but isn't able to perfectly match those tiny things that our brain is looking for, we get creeped out. Our brains are trying to process subtle cues from the face, and they're either not there at all (making them seem cold and emotionless) or they're slightly wrong, which is even more disturbing.
If something is far enough away from human, though, our brains don't try to look for those same cues, and we're okay with it. When your brain looks at Goku, it doesn't expect his eyes to be the right shape: nothing else is, after all, so it doesn't really register as "human." Consciously, obviously, we recognize that it's a stylized depiction of a human, but our "subconscious brain" isn't trying to read it in the same way.
As for large eyes being cute, I'm not totally sure. I would guess that it's because we associate wide eyes with children, and we're hard wired to think children are cute. I don't really like that answer, though, because I'm not really convinced that children have wider eyes. There are also plenty of contexts where we consider large eyes to be creepy as fuck, so I'd guess that it has more to do with the pupil and eye shape than the fact that they're simply large.

So I was driving earlier and was annoyed because a turnaround I usually use was blocked off despite there being no visible reason for it; no active construction, no workers, no hazards other than the cones and barriers themselves. Instead of just Being Annoyed about it, though, I decided to do some digging and find out if there's a reason for it.
Turns out there is! I found a reddit post on r/explainlikeimfive from a decade ago which asks pretty much the same question and had this very enlightening comment underneath:
