It's already an hour into the new year over here so Happy New Year everyone we fucking made it. Anyways here are so pictures of kitty I saw when I was supposed to watch the new year firework show

i think also a huge part of why artists majorly refuse machine-learning (bc that’s what it is, i refuse to call it ai bc it’s inaccurate and gives tech bros too much credit) is that the people currently championing and developing those tools actively want it to replace artists. They loudly and proudly hate the arts and want every creative professional put out of work. They want every creative HOBBYIST to give up. I have seen machine-learning art generators call us artoids (like ‘femoids’ incels or unhealthily online misogynists use to refer to women. To give you the idea of the kind of hate-fueled superiority we’re dealing with) and circle-jerk to the idea of art no longer being a career and no one being able to ask for commissions anymore.

Machine-learning tools are currently a symbol of people who see creativity and art as an enemy, a boogeyman to be slain. They are designed accordingly - stealing human work to create the data, designing it so that people can generate ‘sketches’ or ‘doodles’ to deceive the layman that it was hand-drawn, using real-world likenesses without consent, etc. When tech bros get tired of weaponizing machine-learning because they think we need to get ‘real jobs’ or that furry porn artists charge too much for comms and need to be stopped, it will probably be a lot easier for artists to embrace it as it’ll be a lot easier to develop ethical tools. On top of making development easier, it could become a great tool to make the visual arts accessible for people that have disabilities affecting drawing ability. It could be a wonderful technology.

But as it stands we’re not there yet.

It's kind of hilarious that they think machine learning models will be the the end of art though. As if art hasnt been a core human function from prehistoric age and as if it hasnt survived hundreds of purges, demonizations, and attempts to erase certain styles and movements and people. We're going to prevail no matter what and they can die mad about it

Story - summarized

Marina is bored after an endless existence on the Ark. She tries to entertain herself, but all she really likes at this point is the mirror that shows her glimpses of Miraland. Right now, some kids are going to a carnival, where there’s going to be a fireworks show. She loves how different colors and patterns explode in the sky.

She decides that once she steps into Miraland, she will go to the fireworks show.

With this plan in mind, Marina looks for her brother, Aeon, in the lab. She asks when will they make it to Miraland, but he responds by talking about his experiments. Frustrated, Marina runs back to her room. She is alone and bored on the Ark. With no other option, Marina decides to grab some gunpowder from the supplies and make her own “fireworks” to open a hole in the Ark and create her own entrance into Miraland.

After several failed attempts to get into Miraland, Aeon finds her. He is stunned by the mess - he pushes the matter aside and brings Marina to the front of the ship. After she left, he made his own firework. It’s small and simple, but it lights up the night sky in silver and gold sparkles.

Marina is thrilled. She still wants to go to Miraland and make fireworks, but this will keep her occupied in the meantime.

Connections

-Whatever Marina sees in the mirror that she likes, Aeon tries to recreate it on the Ark. Here, it’s fireworks, and in Neon Bubbles, it’s a bubble-blowing toy that shows memories.

-Marina notices that Aeon looks a little guilty when he says they can’t leave the Ark. This is in part because he has left the Ark in his Reflection for Oceanic Reverie, but when he did, it nearly caused the Ocean of Memories to swallow up a coastal city in Miraland.

Fun Facts

-In Chapter 1, Marina references a quote from the movie The Shining: “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”

-Aeon says that they need more supplies to make fireworks. While he is referring to Marina taking some to make a hole in the ship, it is never explained where they get their food or supplies from.
