What is Express.js? A Comprehensive Guide to Beginners

Let’s start with web development.

When we talk about web development, we are basically essentially talking about the front-end and back-end (also referred to as server-side). Express is a backend development Nodejs framework.

What is a Nodejs Framework?

This section is for those who are not familiar with frameworks. If you already know what a framework is, please feel free to skip ahead.

Writing an application from scratch is time-consuming and tedious, especially in today’s fast-paced world, and initial setup may involve a lot of boilerplate code, such as setting up ports and defining route handlers; frameworks help to save time and effort by providing a pre-built set of tools and libraries that can be used to quickly and easily create a web application. This can free up developers to focus on the things that matter most — writing logic and advanced functionalities.

What is Express js?

The image shows how a tech stack contributes to complete web development. For instance, when it comes to data storage, a Database (e.g., MongoDB) is required, and for writing the front end, various frameworks exist today, such as Angular.js.(in MEAN stack).

Similarly, you need to use a backend-specific language or framework for the backend. Some popular backend languages include Python, Java, JavaScript (Node.js), and PHP, while Django, Express.js, and Flask are some of the popular backend frameworks.

If you want to use JavaScript in the backend, you typically need to use the Node.js runtime environment. Node.js allows you to run JavaScript code outside of a web browser, which makes it possible to use JavaScript for both the front end and back end of a web application.

On top of Nodejs, several frameworks have been created, among which is Express. More precisely, it is a layer built around Node.js that significantly simplifies the process of working within the Node.js environment and reduces development complexity.

Express is an open-source web application framework for Node.js. It provides a robust set of features for building web and mobile applications, including routing, middleware, template engines, seamless database integration, and a wealth of features for developing advanced features and functions.

Note: In this article, when we refer to web applications with Express, we are explicitly referring to the development of “back-end services or APIs.”

Features of Express

1. An array of pre-built tools

The framework includes an array of tools for web applications, routing, and middleware for building and deploying large-scale, enterprise-ready applications.

2. Node package manager

It comes up with a Node package manager and a command-line interface(CLI), allowing you to create project structures, generate routes, controllers, and other components, as well as manage dependencies and configuration settings.

3. Middleware

Middleware in Express is used as snippets of code that intercept requests and responses, manage errors, and perform various other tasks, helping you to perform actions like validation, logging, and authentication in a reusable and modular way.

4. Routing

ExpressJS offers developers a straightforward routing system that simplifies the handling of HTTP requests. In addition, it allows you to define your own special paths and rules for these requests.

Applications of Expressjs

It is termed as a versatile framework that developers employ for constructing APIs, single page and real-time applications, microservices, proxy servers, CMSs, backend for mobile applications, authentication, authorization mechanisms, and many more services. Below is a list of the application you can build using Express js.

1. APIs for Single Page Application

Single-page applications (SPAs) are a popular type of web application that loads all of the content for the page in one go. This means that the user does not have to wait for the page to reload when they interact with it, which can provide a smoother and more responsive experience.

Some popular examples of SPAs include Gmail, Google Maps, and Spotify. These apps are able to provide a great user experience because they only need to load the content once, and then they can dynamically update the content based on the user’s actions. This makes for a very fluid and interactive experience. Express is used for developing back-end services, or APIs, for single-page applications to fetch data.

2. Real-time applications

Real-time applications are increasingly popular as they allow users to interact with each other in real time. Some popular examples of real-time applications include multiplayer games, chat apps, and collaboration tools. Express is used in developing real-time applications.

It helps you build the basic structure, like handling web pages and buttons, and when you want your website to instantly update without needing to refresh the page, Express.js and socket.io can work together.

Express.js can take care of the regular stuff your website needs, like showing pages and handling regular requests. While WebSockets enables real-time data exchange between the server and clients.

3. Streaming applications

Streaming applications are becoming increasingly popular as they allow users to watch movies, TV shows, and other content on demand. Some popular examples of streaming applications include Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+.

You can leverage Express in streaming applications for a variety of tasks, including handling requests, serving media files, developing authentication and authorization modules, implementing search and recommendations, and many more functionalities.

4. Fintech application

Some popular fintech applications that are built with Express.js include Robinhood, Coinbase, and PayPal. Leveraging the robust functionalities of Express.js, these applications efficiently manage intricate financial transactions.

5. APIs

APIs are software intermediaries that allow different systems to communicate with each other. They are widely utilized by different systems for integrating payment gateways, social media integrations, and e-commerce integrations. Todoroki never thought that there would be a point in his life where he spent his weekends lying on the living room floor, holding a full conversation with his eight-month-old son as if the tiny human could actually understand every word. And yet, here he was—stretched out on his back, staring at the ceiling while his son, Shuu, rested against his chest, happily kicking his little legs as they engaged in what Todoroki was beginning to consider their usual weekend routine.

You had gone out to get groceries, leaving them alone for a while, and he had quickly discovered that Shuu was happiest when he was either being held or allowed to clamber all over his father like a small, determined climber.

Currently, said baby was on his stomach, his tiny hands gripping at Todoroki’s shirt as he made an admirable attempt to push himself up with all the strength his chubby little arms could muster. The doctor had mentioned tummy time was good for his development, but to Shuu, it was a grand adventure—maybe even his greatest enemy.

His son looked so much like him that it sometimes took Todoroki by surprise.

His wispy hair was still soft and undecided in color, but those round, curious eyes were a perfect mirror of yours. Every so often, when Shuu blinked up at him with an expression of innocent curiosity, it hit Todoroki that this was his child.

His son.

The little person that he and you had brought into the world. The realization never failed to strike him in quiet moments like this, when he had nothing to do but bask in the weight of it.

“You wouldn’t believe the week I had, Shuu,” Shouto murmured, lifting a hand to gently rub slow, soothing circles on his son’s tiny back.

Shuu let out an excited coo in response, one of his chubby hands grasping at the fabric of Todoroki’s shirt. His fingers barely curled around the material, but he held on determinedly.

“Midoriya somehow managed to schedule us for a meeting at seven in the morning. Seven, Shuu. On a Friday. You know what that means?”

Shuu let out a happy shriek, completely unaware of the horror of early morning meetings. Todoroki sighed dramatically. “Exactly. It means I had to wake up even earlier to get dressed, drink coffee, and mentally prepare for Midoriya’s enthusiasm before the sun was even fully up.” He paused, frowning slightly. “And then he had the audacity to say it was a ‘great team-building experience.’”

His son slapped a tiny hand against his chest, his bright eyes gleaming as he babbled incoherently. Todoroki nodded as if he understood.

“Mhm, I know. I should’ve expected it. But at least your uncle Bakugou suffered with me.”

His son cooed in response, the sound soft and bubbly, like he was adding his own input.

Todoroki nodded solemnly. “Yes, exactly. You understand.”

The baby let out another happy noise before suddenly pressing his face against his father’s chest, his tiny mouth leaving a damp spot on the fabric. Todoroki exhaled through his nose. “And now you’re drooling all over me. Again.” He chuckled in amusement, bringing a small bib up to carefully wipe away the small trail of drool forming on his son’s chin.

“Wah uhm!”

Todoroki sighed, but there was no real annoyance in his expression. But there was an odd sense of contentment settling over him as he let his hand rest on his son’s back, feeling the gentle rise and fall of his breathing. It was moments like this that made everything else—the long work hours, the exhaustion, the constant balancing act of being both a hero and a father—completely worth it.

“You are very talkative today,” he observed, shifting slightly so Shuu was better balanced on his chest. His son blinked down at him, completely unbothered, before letting out another high-pitched babble. “Oh? That’s your input? You think I should get revenge on Midoriya?” Todoroki’s lips twitched. “That’s devious. Just like your mother.”

At the mention of you, Shuu’s little face brightened even more, and he kicked his legs with excitement, making Todoroki smile. “You miss Mama already?” He kissed the top of his son’s head, inhaling the soft baby scent that lingered in his hair. “She’ll be back soon. She’ll probably scold me if I let you get too drooly before she comes home.”

As if on cue, Shuu blew a big, wet raspberry against Todoroki’s shirt, successfully soaking the fabric. Todoroki sighed again. “Well, I walked right into that one.”

He shifted slightly, tilting his head to get a better look at his son’s tiny features. “You’re going to grow up into a strong, smart boy, Shuu,” he murmured, his voice softer now. “And I’ll always be here. Even when you start talking back to me instead of babbling nonsense.”

Shuu responded by planting both hands on his father’s chest and pushing up, his tiny arms trembling with the effort. He held himself up for a moment before collapsing back down with a happy squeal, his round cheeks pressing against Todoroki’s shirt.

Todoroki smiled, gently rubbing his son’s back again.

The front door opened a moment later, and your voice called out, “I’m home!”

Shuu perked up instantly, letting out a delighted squeal as he tried to push himself up again. If anything, Todoroki thinks that Shuu would’ve crashed into your legs by now if he were able to walk. And he just lifted him with ease, sitting up just as you walked into the living room with a grocery bag in each hand. You took one look at them—Todoroki’s shirt covered in drool, Shuu’s delighted expression—and shook your head fondly.

“Did you two have fun?” you asked, setting the bags down on the kitchen counter before making your way over.

“I think he’s plotting something,” Todoroki said seriously. “He suggested I take revenge on Midoriya.”

You gasped, placing a hand over your mouth in exaggerated shock. “Shuuchan! Are you already learning how to scheme?”

Your son shrieked in response, his chubby arms reaching for you, his mother. You laughed, scooping him up and peppering his face with kisses. Todoroki watched you, his heart full.

Yes, he never thought he’d be here—spending his weekends talking to an eight-month-old like he was a full-grown adult.

But he wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.

Still, people immediately started speculating — mainly because the guy looks a lot like G-dragon, her ex boyfriend

If you’re not familiar with their history, they were rumored to be dating around 2015. Never confirmed, but it was kind of an open secret. It was too obvious. They had a lot of lowkey interactions online, subtle matching items, and fans noticed some behind-the-scenes stuff during overlapping schedules, Liking eachothers posts and alot of pics of eachother. Things seemed to be off in 2017, right when G-dragon started his motte tour. That was the point where people started suspecting they were having issues. She usually attends bigbang concerts and gd’s tours whenever she has the time. She’s always seen in the crowd secretly and sometimes backstage pics but during motte tour she was never seen in the crowd ever she barley reposted about it like she usually does with all her industry friends. People thought she was focusing on her solo career or the bigger opinion which was they were having issues. By 2018, it became pretty clear they were done. y/n unliked a bunch of old posts about them, deleted comments that referenced their relationship (or the breakup), and generally stopped engaging with anything related to him. No official statement, but fans took that as confirmation. This all happened a few months (suspected december , november) after he came back from military service. -jiyong was recently seen in seoul and where y/n is it looks alot like tokyo and after some digging it looks like a familiar cafe in tokyo .

-y/n and Gd haven’t interacted in years, so a random public link-up seems unlikely without any hints at least like they usually did back in the days. - She’s been laying low for a while. From 2020, y/n been really under the radar in her hiatus. She occasionally posts about her cats, art or fashion but she’s avoided any public drama or dating speculation. Her pr team still deletes comments about them till this day. If this was a reconnection with jiyong, it seems weird she’d risk being seen in public so casually after every thing she has done to avoid when it first started No info yet on who the guy actually is — could be a friend, someone she works with, or maybe she’s quietly seeing someone new (most likely). Hard to say.
