Title: WMMT6 - Me and their cars duke it out
Back in July of 2019, BNA had already launched the WMMT6 arcade machine spreading the arcade branches (e.g. Timezone Arcade, Quantum Arcade, etc..) inside the Philippine malls, and to this day the "number 6" Wangan Maxi Tune installment has updated to "6RR"! 🇵🇭🌃🛣️🚘🕹️ Will it soon be updated from "6RR" to "6RR Plus" and meet new cars, including the new Nissan car? 🤔 I won't spoil you, so you have to search it for yourself! 😉
• Nevertheless, here's today's WMMT throwback of my snapshot featuring my three main cars [Spot 🐶🏎️ & Riya's 🐰🏎️ Impreza cars 🇯🇵🚘🟥🟦🩷🇯🇵🚘 (GDB-C & GDB-F models respectively), and my Nissan Fairlady Z Version S (Z33, 350Z) 🇯🇵🚘⬜] ] from my BanaPassport (now called "Bandai Namco Passport") and my friend Romulus907's (Quilava) OC Fuse car 🔥🦎, the Mazda RX-8 Type S (SE3P) 🇯🇵🚘🟥 duke it out in a fatal four-way "Online Ghost Battle"! Unfortunately, the actual screenshot from my Wangan Navigator app was lost in time, but at least I have this photo shoot (from my Honor 8C phone) posted and sent to my private storage on my dA account. 🖼️📲😊 I'll make an update on the fatal four-way with these cars I've mentioned, someday when I have funds for playing Maxi Tune 6RR. 😉
IMPORTANT NOTE: I noticed something... 🤔 Upon launching the WMMT6 game, the custom stickers had vanished, that means the Speedster Twins' iconic dual stripe sticker and mine as well had removed from playing WMMT6. 😥 Yeah, that's something that we've didn't seen that coming...
Spot 🐶🏎️ [wearing Teenager Dogday's attire w/ Teenager Dogpressed's jacket]: Mmmm... Yeah. 🙁 We've already seen that, as well and we missed that awesome dual stripe stickers. Will the custom stickers returns to the upcoming "6RR Plus"? 🤔
Riya 🐰🏎️ [wearing Teenager Hoppy and Teenager Catnap's clothes combined]: *Sigh* 😞 I don't know, Spot. *pat on his back* But, we'll see when BNA developers be able to return of the custom stickers. Who knows?🤷‍♀️

Was SE NOT considered a failure and if yes maybe thats what is protecting us from the manga-acurate reboot of the main series?
Quoting Wikipedia: "The first three of the manga volumes [of Soul Eater NOT] released by Yen Press are best sellers according to The New York Times." So, the sales weren't terrible in the US, but I don't have sales numbers in Japan--and as the series had few chapters, and some released infrequently, and had only a short anime season, that doesn't make me think the series was that successful.
But I don't think any of this protects us from a manga-accurate reboot for one big reason: it feels like NOT has been written out of continuity, hence out of manga-accuracy, supplanted by Fire Force so that, when Fire Force ends, it leads to a Soul Eater reboot.
Let me explain what I mean by this.
(Fire Force spoilers below.)
What in NOT is really that necessary that you couldn't ignore it, pretend it didn't happen, and just give people a more accurate Soul Eater story instead of a moe-story? "But Tsugumi, Clay, and Akane show up in the manga's final arc!" But if you didn't know that was Tsugumi in the final arc, would that matter? And if you didn't know Clay and Akane from NOT, then you get to learn enough about them from just reading the final arc.
What I think NOT offered that was necessary was worldbuilding--showing that the rest of the world has little idea about Death Children lingo and style, that Japan has required its prime ministers be DWMA graduates ever since the Great War, that the DWMA was involved with one of John F. Kennedy's mistresses, that Death City gets funding from international sources and how that may have influenced the various cultural influences on the city's businesses, architecture, and people.
...And then Fire Force retconned almost all of that worldbuilding.
Shinra reboots his world into what becomes the Soul Eater world, with Lord Death as the new chief god--and suddenly so much of the world has skull motifs all over it, making Death City less interesting. Now it's not that the Death Children of Death City are unique--everyone dresses like that, because everyone sees Lord Death as closer and less scary and threatening.
(One counter-argument to what I just said: there is still 800+ years between when Shinra rebooted the world and when Soul Eater starts, so maybe the world gets back to "normal" in those 800+ years while Death City sticks to that creepy atmosphere. And it's not as if the skull motif wasn't in other parts of the world--the three one shots that started the manga and the anime had some skull designs on some buildings. And in 800+ years Justin Law is treated by others as weird for being so devoted to Lord Death, whereas when Shinra rebooted the world there were nuns in the same Lord Death church attire.)
How could there be the Great War and JFK in Soul Eater NOT if Shinra rebooted the world, such that such an older history is long gone? (Seeing as Shinra was remaking the world with almost zero knowledge how biology and past civilizations work, it is possible he literally brought back the Great War and JFK again, but it's probably easier to just pretend NOT didn't happen and that the Great War and JFK were from before the Great Cataclysm, not during the NOT time period.)
To summarize: I think it's more likely that David Pro (or whoever animates a reboot), Kodansha, and Square Enix will just pretend NOT didn't exist, that Fire Force is the prequel to Soul Eater, and, if a Soul Eater reboot anime were to happen, use this pretense to ignore NOT and wrap up the Fire Force anime with a final episode that also serves as a pilot for a Soul Eater reboot to come out in the subsequent year.

[Request for an Immediate Rescue by Naofumi Hataya]
Shinra : Here we go again with another collaborate. I have no idea of how we collaborated with the Mashimaverse, then delinquents, and of course the previous manga that our author used to work on. Here are we...Except the girl who crossover with the Rent-A-Get Yo Girl service. Another lame old saturday of dealing with addicted gacha games in Japan. Isn't there a fiesty way of saying I don't like having too much crossovers with everybody. Except the part that it was me who created Soul Eater, I did all of that stuff before I was turned into a Chao.
Arthur : But I guarantee you that this is the worst day ever since we got into those resurrected bodies in the real world. I was resurrected into the body of a woman they call it "Saber". Can't believe the Ohkuboverse has been one heck of a universe since the author was an assistant to the Getbackers.
Shinra : So does that stupid addictive gacha game that were on, we can't be diddly dallying on the peach front saying who is who is going to collaborate us with the other universes I'm gonna tell everyone that who is it going to be this time? who's it gonna be this time around? Since no one is collaborating with us anymore, I think we should all take a break from collaborating. I'm sick of Japan collaborating with others.
Arthur : I know someone who can collaborate with this dude. I found him on the internet.
Shinra : Really? Who did collaborate this time?
Arthur : easy, It's this guy that we are collaborating him.
*Eren's face is shown on his phone*
Shinra : Oh, Arthur. Please, you didn't collaborate with that guy. We don't who he is.
Arthur : I think so too, dude. We've seen this man all the time and he has been around in the Kodansha line since Arakawa came to the company to make manga out of a novel from the 20th century, actually, the heroic legend of Arslan is from the 1980s and he she made recreated that 80s novel of Arslan to turn into the modern art style of Fullmetal Alchemist. Please...I have business opportunity to carry on female human body, that is a stuck up servant to japanese dudes like you who wanted to have sex with. But I can't have sex to a guy, I'm straight and single! And just to proven to you that...I am not gay.
*RUMBLING*
Shinra : Hey, Arthur. Is it me or is it your feet shaking the ground too much?
Arthur : Uhh, I don't think that wasn't me, dude! That's not my feet that is doing it!
Shinra : Then what's with all that....*realizing* Oh heck no.
Arthur : Oh sm
*cues The Rumbling*
Eren : Hey, guys! I just wanted to say that this is the best collaboration that I ever worked with you guys! Does this mean I can finally get my paycheck now?
Shinra : [to Arthur] You were saying?
Arthur : [to Shinra] This is why we can't have nice things in Japan.
Shinra : [to Arthur] *sighs* For the record, I really hate those guys so much.
Maki : Hey, guys. Why do we hear boss music? SWEET MOTHER OF GOD!!!
Sister Iris : Maki, Is there something wrong here? OH MY GOD!!!
Tamaki : Guys? Will you just keep it down already? WHAT THE HECK IS THAT!?!
Lisa Isaribi : Ey, yo girl! Chill out. it's only a collaboration with--OH DEAR LORD! IT'S GOING TO SQUASH TO US ALL!!!
Hinawa : Girls! What's with all the screaming--WOAH! WHAT THE F***!?!
Vulcan : Come on guys, this isn't the time to be fooling aro--No, No, No, No,NOOOOOOOOO!!!
Obi : What is all with the darn noises!? I'm trying to break a sweat.
Hinawa : Like, captain. You gotta see this! There's some kind of thing going on with the collaboration and this dude just brought an army of giant muscle headed dudes!
Obi : Oh, for the last time, Hinawa. I told you that Muscle heads are worth the brains and brawns--*realizing* HOLY F***ING SH*T!
Maki : [To Shinra] WHAT HAVE YOU DONE!?!
Eren : And now...Prepare to be crushed by the rumbling!
Shinra : I knew I should've stayed back at a Chao at the garden.
Viktor Licht : WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!!!
*A Titan about to crush Company 8*
Shinra : NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
*SPLASH+Record Scratch*
Shinra the Devil Chaos Chao : Huh? What?
*It is only revealed to be just a dream*
Saber (Arthur) : That would make you shut up. You've been screaming in your sleep for 10 seconds.
Shinra the Devil Chaos Chao : I can't believe that I am still stuck like this. Well, at least I'm not in the mood for an ice cream shake. Do you think that I was gonna collaborate with a guy who literally died by the hands of his hot asian GF?
Saber (Arthur) : No offense, but that Ackerman lady is kinda pretty hot.
Shinra the Devil Chaos Chao : Dude, Boyle. I was talking about his adoptive sister.
*BELL TOLLS+CAT MEOWING+GOAT NOISES*
*GLASS SHATTERING*
Saber (Arthur) : I'm gonna pretend that I did not hear that.
Shinra the Devil Chaos Chao : So much for being the one hit wonder on making these gacha games pretty addictive. Yeah, I don't if that's gonna work in the future. I bet we'll just stay clear and promise that you'll never tell about it! So...Whose idea was it to live in the Chao World business. You still have my keys to my walker, right? My Chao Walker that I really need to take out?
Saber (Arthur) : Sure dude. I think your ride's in the back of the Pyramid base left by that mad scientist.
Shinra the Devil Chaos Chao : Darn. I hate this life of mine. At least, I still have my personality.

Quick Notes: Chapter 196-198
I'm two weeks behind! Let's get through this.
Chapter 196
I feel like the idea that the Dark Stars could beat the Shining Stars WHILE BOARDING THE EDENS ZERO is a big oversight.
The old "self-destruct and launch destructive software" trick from over 100 chapters ago. Didn't expect to see this coming.
We know Killer is a villain because, despite everything that he's done up to this point, he doesn't believe robots have hearts.
Hey, they found Rebecca in the Distortion World. (Yes, I've started Platinum recently.)
It's cool to see Shiki and Weisz team up on something. Not sure this has ever happened in the series.
Now that they're back on the colosseum, let's check up on Homura.
Never mind, let's check up on Sister.
I understand Clown's mindset, but yikes.
You guys don't get credit for taking out Witch. I wouldn't even give credit to Ziggy for Witch.
Back from vacation in the Aoi Cosmos, it's my guide to Mashima’s School of Despair:
Instill fear in subject. (Set up battles between EZ Crew and Dark Stars.)
Give them reason for hope. (Shiki beats Wizard relatively easily.)
Make the situation worse. (Clown and Killer win their fights and make their way onto the EZ.)
Leave subject with room for hope. (Hermit seemingly defeats Killer.)
Crush hope like a grape. (All the Shining Stars seem to be taking L's.) [YOU ARE HERE]
Everything ends up alright. (You should already know what happens.)
Chapter 197
Classic villain monologue before they're proven wrong. Can't wait to see how this is proven to be too soon.
I'm not a fan of these "flashbacks to time we could have seen in real-time but we were too busy watching something else go down" moments.
"I call my armor the 'peerless armor'." "How gaudy..." Basically.
This might be a question we ask after this fight: when will Homura consider herself to have surpassed Valkyrie Yuna?
With this fight, I hope we start making the comparison between Erza and Homura more.
I don't care how the ships end up happening. Shiki and Homura is my favorite dynamic in the series, bar none.
Chapter 198
"There's a man who values peace in the cosmos"
Did Hermit manage to make her way to the Etherion Door? That's impressive.
There's that payoff! I wonder if the anime will connect this to the earlier moment if/when this gets animated.
Mashima decided to drink his extra horny juice before making this chapter.
Thank goodness Sister isn't playing into Clown's game of killing his dog.
I'm still worried about Sister's use of training.
"We are the superior successors to you lot." Homura just beat Brigadine, Killer only got Hermit through cheese, and Shiki beat Wizard with a tenth of his power. Quite the upgrades, huh?
"Have a good nightmare." That's a dope line to have here.
"I'm not into this getting-tied-up crap..!! You are, and you know it!" Kink shaming
Honestly, "Shiki came to her rescue" is more of a crew-wide thing at this point, not a Rebecca thing.
Rebecca's nightmare would be watching her friends die. So, basically chapters 82-84.
It's good to know that Mashima still can do body horror when he wants to. Better to know he rarely wants to.
"I even have a legit medical counselor's license. Got it online though." How much does this matter in a universe like EZ?
Sister's final pose looks like she finished an all-out attack. (Can't wait to be able to play Persona 5 on Switch in 2 years!)
Well, I'm caught up. If you want an explanation for why this is how it is, read more! If Quick Notes is all you're here for, then see you!
I've been doing Quick Notes for quite some time. I've done it with very little prep time and while I've been deathly sick. While the past 3 weeks have been pretty busy IRL, my real issue has nothing to do with me. It has to do with Kodansha.
As some of you might know, the SimulPub for seemingly all of Weekly Shonen Magazine has been put on pause. I've heard there are some screwy things happening on different sides involving translators. Whether or not this has anything to do with that is anyone's guess. At any rate, official translations of EZ are on indefinite hiatus.
I've been using the official translations for Quick Notes, even when I did this for Fairy Tail years ago. I've read the fan translations, but I prefer using the version that supports the creator to make this happen. It took me a while to get to the point of deciding to use fan translations. However, with FT Month coming soon, I figured I can use them while we wait for the official translations to come out.
Though, this probably means I don't have an excuse to go do the ones for FT's sequel... joy...
At any rate, see you!

LGBTQ Manga Review - If I Could Reach You Vol. 2
The first volume of tMnR’s If I Could Reach You was a nonstop barrage of emotionally shattering and resonating suffering. Uta hopelessly struggled against her feelings for her sister-in-law, Kaoru, until finally recognizing that she could never be rid of them nor act upon them. The second volume gives the readers a much-needed breath, a slower and less devastating story focused mainly on the side characters. While it does a lot right and helps build work's pacing, many parts of this volume feel like an auxiliary bridge between story arcs, which unfortunately drags it down.
Tumblr media
The volume starts relatively happy and light, a drastic change from the first. Kaoru starts working on making jewelry, Uta can talk to her somewhat normally and is even looking for a job. However, Reiichi, Uta’s older brother and Kaoru’s husband, is once again absent. Uta’s friend Chloe, who got Uta her job at a cafe, requests her assistance studying for exams, which Uta sees as the perfect opportunity to escape Kaoru and her feelings temporarily.
This plotline allows the reader to learn more about Chloe and further develops her character beyond the brash girl who Uta unloads her problems. I mentioned in my review of Volume One that she was in desperate need of more characterization and focus, given her crucial role as Uta’s confidant, and it is lovely to see this need fulfilled.
Chloe’s father is a hopeless romantic and frequently falls in and out of love with women, to the point where Chloe is unsure of her mother’s identity. Fed up with her father’s behavior, she began living alone and developed a view of love as fleeting and unnecessary. Her past contextualizes her personality and explains her actions and opinions in both this volume and the previous, her isolation, apparent lack of attachments, and bluntness. It perfectly rounds out her character and makes her far more compelling than she previously was.
Tumblr media
Miyabi, a coworker of Uta, challenges Chloe’s worldview and ideas of love when she asks her out. However, even after accepting, Chloe continues to be dismissive of her, as she is of everyone, and does not show much affection, physical or otherwise. Their relationship is not healthy; Miyabi is more invested and takes on the role of Chloe’s caretaker, cleaning her apartment, and making her food. However, Chloe is lack of affection leaves Miyabi uncertain about their relationship. Desperate for assistance and wanting to be closer with Chloe, she pursues Uta’s advice.
Ultimately, the conflict in the relationship is solved when they sit down to define their partnership. Chloe declares that she does not want to participate in the usual rituals of romance, but has come to rely on Miyabi and enjoys her presence. They come to an agreement that both agree on and continue their relationship with newly established terms. On the one hand, this resolution is unsatisfying. Their partnership still relies on the dynamic of caretaker and Chloe. Still, it is a defined, and consensual arrangement made between the two, and possibly more faithful to their characterization than a conventional relationship would have been. If one squints, they can claim that Chloe is asexual or aromantic, I think she is just cynical and jaded.
The plot is not poor by any means, and it provides readers with a much-needed reprieve from the emotional torture and drama of the first volume. Unfortunately, much of this plot feels like filler. In total, it makes few accomplishments that serve the greater narrative, such as further developing Chloe. However, its most significant achievements are reinforcing the story’s steady slow pace, and the final growth achieved by the main characters.
Tumblr media
After witnessing the relationship between Chloe and Miyabi, Uta decides to become indispensable to Kauru. This revelation is matched by one from Kauru, who is by herself while Reiichi is away. She realizes that she is lonely and needs to have other people around. Her requirement to have Uta nearby, and Uta’s need to be close with her, create a dynamic of codependency. TMnR’s brilliance is on full display here. By establishing this new form of their relationship while the characters are separated, it will make their inevitable reunion that much more complex and compelling. Sadly, other choices made did not pay off nearly as well.
The final twist, which I will not spoil here, is predictable and poorly written. Sadly, it makes Reiichi a much weaker character and seems to set him up as the “villain” for subsequent volumes. One of his most exceptional qualities as a romantic opponent for Uta was that neither she nor the reader could hate him, as he was a moral and kind guy, albeit, slightly absent-minded, who tried to do his best for his sister and wife. However, to the author's credit, the change does not come out of anywhere and helps readers look at past events in a different light.
The manga continues to showcase phenomenal artwork. The characters are well designed and extremely expressive. There are significantly fewer panels featuring Uta looking wretched and exhausted than the first, which matches the volume’s lighter tone. However, the girl's heartache is still exceptionally well communicated, and a few more comically exaggerated faces and actions. Near the end is a fantastic sequence told only through images that shows the characters’ past together, which reinforces and supports their dilemmas and foreshadows coming events brilliantly.
Tumblr media
There are a few light moments of service, such as the chapter 8 opening artwork, which displays Chloe in bed with bare shoulders, but hardly anything worth more mentioning. Jennifer Skarupa’s lettering, along with Diana Taylor’s translation and Haruko Hashimoto’s editing, is spectacular, just as it was in the first volume, and really pulls readers into the story and punctuates the more dramatic moments perfectly.
If I Could Reach You Volume 2 is a competent entry into the series, if slightly inconsequential save for the final chapter or two. It seeks to further the world by establishing supporting characters and showing just how dominating and self-destructive Uta’s love is, even when away from Kauru. It makes a few missteps in these efforts, such as an unwelcome twist and failing to serve the main plot. But even then, the story presented is not a bad one. It succeeds in setting the series’ pace and creating new beats by separating the main characters, which will contribute to the upcoming storm that I suspect Volume 3 will be. All of these elements are encased by tMnR’s robust dialogue and exceptional artwork. While it will not be most reader’s favorite, I strongly encourage that they do not skip it, as it serves for a launching point into a far more compelling and tumultuous continuation.

Karate Down to a Science?
Tumblr media
Reposting this with some edits (13-02-2021)
This was written while I was only studying karate for three years. I received my shodan 5 years ago now.
One thing I’ve noticed, and been told incessantly, is that karate is simply just physics. And yes it is. We’re told things like “grip the floor with your feet” “use your toes” “speed is important” and “body connection”. These things all relate to the principles of physics. I won’t make this very long, but I will highlight some important pieces of how karate interacts with physics principles.
Three Principles of Effective Technique
First, we are told as a first principle to always keep contact with the floor, and at multiple points if possible. This is using the whole foot, and the toes. This is based off the principle that the floor contains a high amount of potential energy, it has the energy to resist and counter any energy thrown at it (basketball, a person jumping, or a foot perhaps). This is the third principle of physics –force in one direction will have an equal and opposite reaction in the opposite direction. So if you grip the floor and push down on it, you have much energy storing from the floor into your foot - potential energy that can either be dispersed or directed if you are proficient and trained enough to do so. This leads into the second principle.
Body connection is required to take the floor’s potential energy and transfer it into usable energy. The floor’s “stopping force” can be used as a series of energy transfers. The principle that energy can never be created nor destroyed is proof of this principle. The energy is simply transferred. If a good body connection is used, and a direct line from the foot to the block, punch, or kick happens, the energy is almost directly transferred from one form to the other. It is important to have as short of a line as possible in order to minimize the loss of energy at points in the body (cartilage, energy used for elasticity of the muscles, friction, ect..). So if the floor’s energy is transferred from a short straight line to the point of contact, it generates an immovable force. The floor can be used as a stopping force for blocks, as long as contact is kept at all times to a solid flat surface. Incoming energy can be transferred from the user, to a block, down the body into the floor.
Tumblr media
Notice the surface area under the stance. Wider stances afford more area, and the area is directly proportional to stability.
The third principle we are taught is speed. We all know from taking a basics physics course that speed equals distance over time (S = d/t) and power equals the work done over the amount of time (P = w/t). The work equals the force (energy) times displacement (distance) (W = F*d). So basically, creating power with a speedy techniques means a technique with “speed and power”. The force originates from the contact with the floor. The distance is your technique from point A to point B, and minimizing the time between these maximizes the power generated, since time divides the amount of work and force put it. Less time over a distance is more force. Similarly, based on the laws of physics, doing a technique with less of a time interval from point A to point B creates speed of a technique. Speed is minimized time over distance. Rearranging the formulas we can get power = force/time * speed (P = [F/t]*S). This means setting off the technique as quick as possible to generate the most force and wasting less work - making for more efficient use of energy. A technique done with very little stiffness is fast, minimizes energy loss, and, since it is loose, has the ability to be changed or redirected since combat is an ever-changing situation. The power generated is the speed and contraction at the final point - the point of impact. The energy stored in the hand/fist/foot is then immediately released as quickly and powerfully as possible as contact with the target is achieved. This creates your kime or “explosion”. This force should come from the floor, make a quick line through the body and focused upon impact (usually the second knuckle if using a tsuki/Seiken). Your fists can be like boulders or fireballs causing serious damage in quick succession if care is taken to correctly store and manipulate energy. Move like wind, flow like water, be strong like boulders, and burn like fire.
The Hips
The hips is a much talked about topic in karate. It acts as a fulcrum point. We use our hips as the point of energy generation and deflection. As all points in the body is a crossing point for energy. Incoming and outgoing energy. Think of a big X . The extensions of the X are the arms and legs of a human person. At any point on the extensions of X that are pressed down, the center of the x is stressed. This is the point of the hips. So the stress must be transferred from the point of origin “lets say a blocking technique on top” to the center (hips) and down the legs into the floor (which can hold and resists vast amounts of energy). If we do a sweep, and remove one of the legs of “X”, think of what will happen...
The X??:
Tumblr media
Another principle is energy deflection. Our blocks are set up not only to “stop” the technique, but to minimize the amount of energy directly coming towards us. That is why most of our blocks happen in an arc motion. If we intersect a point of energy travelling in a straight line, we increase the distance over which it is travelled, therefore creating less power (remember distance being part of the power formula?). A punch with more distance has less power. And a punch that grazes the target cannot transfer the energy appropriately. Similarly, it could cause the opponent to lose balance. Friction also plays a minor role in energy absorption. Any technique, even minutely touched or changed directions, even if the case we are struck, deflects some of the energy of the blow. We can even “steal” the opponents energy to store for our techniques if care is taken to receive and transmit the energy. Think of a rubber band. Blocks are aimed to throw the opponent off balance, allowing more time for countering as he readjusts his center of balance and reconnects with the floor and recreating body connection. Body connection at all times is essential. The concept of a pulley is also used, where we wind up, and release, winding up in the other direction.
All these things were known by masters of karate, even before physics reached a modern age. (before 1900’s) Masters such as Azato and Itosu. They knew these things through common sense, and many hours of repeated training to define which form of techniques were correct and powerful. So basically karate does base it’s principles off of physics and kinetics. It’s all interrelated. If one were to study the physics behind the martial arts, they would find out why some masters can be trained to break boards, and even the monks that can bend iron bars. They seem to defy the laws of physics, but they are simply working with them and around them. In modern times, we are still refining and changing karate techniques as more research is put into it. Karate is all about spontaneously generating and relaxing energy in order to be flexible for incoming attacks and openings on the opponent. More time spent flexed = more time needed to generate a technique. The main and single goal of the greatest technique is one that reaches point A to point B in the speediest manner possible with little down time in between. The ability to contract and relax is essential. It also minimizes energy expenditure.

Thoughts and comparisons between JP-ENG version of Clear Card chapter 47
Tumblr media
It’s here!!! Finally!!!
After a short summary was released on the page of the French publisher, I’ve been eagerly waiting for this chapter!
And....
BOY IT LIVED UP TO EXPECTATIONS!
BUT FIRST!
We can’t start the monthly post without the gif of the month:
Tumblr media
You’ll understand why if you follow me under the cut!!
A little announcement first: starting by this month, I won’t be sharing the JP raw scans anymore, not even in private. I just don’t feel comfortable anymore, seeing as CLAMP/Kodansha have been cracking down on unauthorized scans lately. I’m sorry. Please support the official release by buying the chapters on Comixology, Pika, JBC, Comic-days or the Chinese publisher’s websites, or by visiting the CLAMP-FANS official website, where you can read this chapter for FREE on Youtube!
That being cleared out, let’s start!
OMG where do I start....well, from the colored double spread, of course!  After long time, we see again the two lovebirds on the chapter cover together! They have the fancy clothes that are supposed to suggest they’re little detectives, in fact the editorial text reads “Leave any difficult case to us!”. And I would be squealing YES at the top of my lungs if I didn’t have one of my dear friends on the Discord server reminding me that these two wretched kids can’t even solve their own super stressful cases related to their personal problems, let alone those of the others!! 😂 just kidding (but not really)
Tumblr media
We start the actual chapter in a very peculiar way. We don’t get Sakura or Akiho starting their day, but actually we get Syaoran! Clinging to his bedroom curtains, the most depressed he’s ever been. You do remember how last chapter ended, right? I was there wondering if we would get a follow up of that scene, with maybe (MAYBE) Syaoran talking about the other important yumemi of this manga, his mother...but fat chance! As usual we’ve got a “reset & go” chapter, where we get immediately catapulted into the next day, even though what’s afflicting Syaoran is directly connected to the day before. “I said something unnecessary/I talked too much/I said something I shouldn’t have said” they’re all good translations of the line 余計なことを言った, but I wanted to put all of them here because I think it’s important to understand what Syaoran really means. It’s not that he shouldn’t have said it because it’s wrong, no, he’s actually worried that he might have disclosed too much of an information for the mind of his girlfriend, which is already devastated enough by this f*cking dream that keeps appearing and, as Syaoran reminds us here himself, involves him. We don’t have to forget that emotional quakes are a no-no for this girl. Seeing Syaoran crucifying himself over that “spilt milk” is already cute, but seeing the Sakura Cards trying to cheer him up?? PRICELESS!! And they’ve already learned to know him, his personality and quirks, in fact Light goes straight to the point “You’ve flat-out told her so, right?” and you just can’t avoid thinking “THEY KNOW HIM TOO”  😂😂  Syaoran knows the harsh truth: indeed, with her amount of power, it’s very likely that those could be premonitory dreams. But he stresses over the form, over how he told her that: a way that didn’t really left any hope and “other interpretations” to be made, and so a “definitive sentence”. I wonder if, deep inside, he feels so guilty about this because it’s like having told her “yes, this is what it’s gonna happen and I’m going to hurt you in the future”? But it doesn’t seem like he wants to show us that fear, as of now. Lovely Mirror, the only one together with Light & Dark who can talk among the Cards, tells him that he doesn’t need to worry, because their Master understands that he told her that out of concern for her, and not to shut her hopes and happiness down. But you just gotta LOOOOOVE how Light not only understands Syaoran’s personality, but she also likes to tease him and give him the right, WONDERFUL ideas!! She starts with “If you’re still concerned about this....then you must invite (her)” and Syaoran, bless him, still doesn’t understand (together with Jump, but Jump is the stupidest card of the deck, Kero said so 😂😂😂🤣).
Syaoran goes to school with a new mission in mind: apologizing to Sakura for how he said that the day before, and then asking her out for a DATE!!! YES! LADIES & GENTLEMEN THIS IS NOT A DRILL!
Tumblr media
Because, as we’re going to find out later, there’s no お出かけ bullsh*t this time around, he really is thinking the word DEETO, the forbidden word!!!! 🤣🤣 There she is, the love of his life, walking down the street to school, but just as he’s starting to call her name, SHE RUNS AWAY! What’s happening?? Hehehe did you see the shock in Syaoran’s reaction here?
Tumblr media
Is it me or he’s thinking she is avoiding him?
He runs after her, tension palpable in the air, only to find her....helping two little children from Tomoeda Elementary!! AWWWW! One of them, a boy, had his hat stuck on a tree (how the hell did it end up there??), so Sakura onee-chan swiftly jumps on the tree (the same way she did when she used Jump) and recovers the hat! The kids are absolutely IN AWE in front of this amazing onee-chan, and they’re even more when they find out that she attended Tomoeda Elementary too, and had Terada as homeroom teacher, just like them! Syaoran can only watch his girl with a tender smile and loving eyes, when Tomoyo suddenly appears behind the bushes, phone in one hand, filming the heroine of the day! 😆 I laughed like there's no tomorrow at how she calmly paused to compose herself and wish a good morning to Syaoran, only to be back gushing after Sakura with the person who can understand her the most!! 😆
Seeing them quietly observing and gushing over Sakura from afar, each in their own way, was a very pleasant, nostalgic scene, that reaffirmed that there isn’t only a boy loving Sakura out there, but a girl too. And they get so along about it.
Just as it made me laugh to find Tomoyo using the term モテモテ in the JP version, when affirming that Sakura is popular with underclassmen too...the term usually has got this underlying tone of “getting romantic admirers” and, even though we can’t probably talk about that with those kids, they still had a temporary infatuation with her, in their own kiddy innocent way, so the term was PERFECT because it literally was killing 2 birds with one stone: when Syaoran agreed with Tomoyo, he basically bared his feelings (and his attraction) for Sakura too 😆😆😆
After seeing some “old days teasing” (made in a very subtle way, Tomoyo’s got this wonderful way to tease him only with a smile), Sakura notices the two (Tomoyo’s line is slightly different in Japanese: “I could capture a wonderful scene first thing in the morning!”) and they head back to school. Sakura explains that Terada-sensei made the little kid like Arithmetic by explaining it in a very easy way, and they all agree that he didn’t change from when they were attending elementary school.  And Sakura just needs to say “But, even now I’m not very good at math” chuckling in her adorable way, and she has killed her boyfriend right there and then.
Tumblr media
GUYS. This is THE FIRST TIME we ever hear Syaoran’s thoughts about Sakura, and especially that KAWAII!!!! 😆😆 It was so utterly instinctive upon seeing her like that, and I’m just here staring at them and screaming internally GET MARRIED YOU TWO!!! 🤣🤣🤣 And! And! The way he tries to focus saying “no, it’s not that” as in “I have another mission in mind” but then his immense love prevails and he thinks “well, yes, it’s also that” as in, “I can’t deny she’s utterly cute” with all those little flowers....he killed me!! 😂 Can I be honest? Can I?  I can’t deny the first thing I thought after bursting into laughter was “puberty hormones, here they come!!” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 But honestly seeing him thinking so lovingly of her, with all that cute blushing and back&forth thoughts, all seen by his perspective, was really REALLY refreshing, nostalgic and it even made us understand HOW F*CKING RESTRAINED this young boy was in the earlier chapters of Clear Card. Do y’all remember how uptight he was?? How calm and composed...we all said “it doesn’t even look like him” and some even were ready to call out CLAMP for ruining a character, but ladies and gentlemen, CLAMP always know what they do. Have faith in them. There was a reason why we saw him like that, and now that he can feel a bit more true to himself, he feels more and more authentic.
Syaoran is set on his goal, he understands that last time it was Sakura inviting him to the botanical garden, so this time he’s gonna do things right AND invite her instead! He’s so nervous, bless him!!!! But he reminds himself he needs to apologize first! 😆 Damn this boy can’t wait to ask her out but at the same time he can’t bring himself to do so hahaha This is the ongoing theme with Syaoran, he’s always so shy to do anything that relates to Sakura, so you can almost guess it’s gonna be like this for many other things: first kiss, asking her to marry him, asking her to have babies...LOL 🤣🤣 TOMOYO, bless her too, notices immediately that there’s something “wrong” with Syaoran, or rather, that he’s been nervous to be left alone with Sakura to ask her something. How can this girl manage to read into her friend’s mind, it’s a mystery to me!! So they arrive at school, and with an excuse Tomoyo leaves the two alone. But not before smiling and making a “thumbs up” to Syaoran, and he understands that “She’s supporting me!!” so FINALLY he musters the courage!! I find it extremely endearing that he finally found the courage to ask her out when he saw that Tomoyo was cheering for him, as re-affirming that the bond between Syaoran and Tomoyo is strong as ever, and he knows he can find support from her at any time. I also wanna thank CLAMP for this little scene because MAN I MISSED INSIGHTFUL TOMOYO like the air I breathe!!!🙏
So Syaoran takes Sakura to their “private” spot, and starts first by apologizing, to which of course Sakura replies “There’s nothing you have to apologize for! You were just letting me know...I’m sorry I made you worry” and then at that moment starts the usual sideshow of “No, I AM sorry” “No, I AM!”, then they luckily stop before night comes and Sakura shoots a low blow for US TSUBASA FANS:
“At times like these...it’s best to say ‘Thank you for worrying about me’ (instead)“
Tumblr media
And I’m just dead. Okay CLAMP. Just when we were least expecting it. GG. The reference was made even more clear by the ENG translation, that was even more straightforward in its “Times like these, I guess you’re supposed to say “Thank you”, not “I’m sorry” “. BAM.💥
BUT THE MISSION IS NOT COMPLETE YET, and Syaoran (after being entranced with her cute statement) is back to business trying to ask her out! He starts by “D-do you want to go together...?” and Sakura, OBLIVIOUS AS ALWAYS BLESSHER, says “To the classroom?” and “We are in different classes though” and here I could say the ENG version gave a nuance that I didn’t like at all: “We’re not classmates, you know...” which sounds quite ARROGANT, to me! That “you know” put there like that gives Sakura a nuance of arrogance and sass that is completely foreign to her. Sakura was just pointing out, she wasn’t trying to treat Syaoran like an imbecile 😅 Incoherencies aside (there needs to be at least one in each chapter g*dammit), Syaoran tries to say the forbidden word, starting with two “de” in hiragana, then gaining confidence with a “de” in katakana (I laughed at this shift from a system to another, it symbolizes the effort), when suddenly there’s a rustle in Sakura’s bag...and Kero-chan literally bursts outside screaming “Date!! Come on spit it out!!” (I liked the ENG version here), the font in the bubble is so jagged that I bursted out laughing because it just makes it even more apparent how much Kero is screaming in that scene 😂😂 he’s totally out of breath, he’s so FED UP with those two dorks!! We don’t have to forget that he promised Yue that he would be staying by Sakura’s side at all times, and since he’s got problems with his life energy source, Suppi too has to be by her side....Sakura can never REALLY be alone with Syaoran!
Moving on to class time, Yamazaki sees Syaoran arriving and asks him if he’s ok since his face is all red, and Syaoran keeps being too honest and spilling “Just a bit of embarassment...” which makes Yamazaki even more suspicious 😂 Then Naoko comes in too and Yamazaki just can’t help asking “Are you ok too, Yanagisawa-san?” which made me burst into laughing because clearly Yamazaki was thinking “what the f*ck is wrong with everyone, this morning??” 🤣🤣🤣 Naoko is super tired because she didn’t get much sleep last night, as she was immersed in the script of the “Two Alices” play, Syaoran worriedly tells her that she should go to the nursery room but Naoko objects that she would then pass out asleep. She explains that the writing of the script went smoothly until halfway, then she got lost, she needed one more character that would influence/have an impact on Alice’s decision, and Syaoran just needs to say a word for Naoko to have her creativity sparking again and say “That’s it!” 😆  With this, we ALL KNOW that Naoko will force Syaoran to get an active role into the play...and the way he was so worried/caring about her in this chapter leaves us with a good prediction that he won’t be able to say no, to not let her down 😆 I just love how all these kids bonded over the years, though. Moreover, we can also predict that just like in the play, Syaoran will probably have a strong influence in a decision Sakura will have to make. And here I start seriously shivering.
Sakura enters her own classroom, with her own blush on her cheeks, which doesn’t go unnoticed on Akiho, who greets her on the spot. Sakura notices she’s sewing the clothes for “Kero-chan and the others”, and she wishes she can start Kaito’s outfit soon enough.
Akiho says happily “...Yes!”, but ladies and gentlemen this is CLAMP, and you just can’t have a whole happy chapter without a tragedy going on. And so, as Akiho spells those words, we get a glimpse of Momo silently frowning, and Kaito, in his house, collapsing on the floor, clutching his chest in obvious pain and struggle, and ominously announcing “It seems I don’t really have much time left. I have to hurry up” which is a bit different from the ENG version, as the JP puts a lot of emphasis on the “little time left”. The final editorial text reads “Kaito collapsed. The accident to his body is...?”
Tumblr media
Kaito is dying, ladies and gentlemen. Which could sound like good news to some, but not to me! I came to like this sleek a*shole. 😑😥 It was mentioned before, but now we can visually see the extent of the consequences of the contract and the time magic on his health. This is gonna be bad. Dear god I don’t want to imagine if Akiho manages to see him like this, sometime later. STOP DESTROYING THIS GIRL’S HAPPINESS. Kaito reaching a point of no return is also a good indication that the climax is near, because I don’t see him dying before the series is over, or I don’t see him dying at all, at least not as a permanent thing. ^_^” This is CCS, after all. Characters don’t die. Right?
Now the story could go two ways. We said before that Kero can’t leave Sakura’s side, right? But he might decide he can leave her alone for just one day, the day of the date with Syaoran, reassured that he’s with her. And that’s when Kaito would probably take the chance to strike, because the Guardians aren’t by her side so she’s got less protection around her. Kero of course would feel really regretful later, if something really happened (and he’s in the condition to remember about it, of course. You never know, with Kaito). Or, Kero+Suppi will just go anyway, because of Sakura’s condition, and the two lovebirds’ date will feel less “private” than it should be. Either way, there’s no way this date can happen without some mess going on. 😆 Since we can all imagine the real showdown will happen during the play, it’s probably not going to be the real deal yet, but if a confrontation will happen, we might find out more about Kaito’s goal. The next few chapters will be really interesting to see!!
So this time around we didn’t have much that was incorrectly translated, but there were some nuances that I was keen to point out. I think this chapter was good enough to forgive CLAMP for the “reset & go” feel of it. 🤗🤗 Let me know what you think about it, my DMs are always open!❤

From Bakeneko to Bakemonogatari: The Secret History of Catgirls
It’s a question society has asked for ages: what came first, the cat or the girl?
The catgirl is one of the most resilient images in anime today. However, even the term “catgirl” is a little vague. Close your eyes and try to imagine what that word actually means. Did you think of a girl, but with cat ears? Did she have a tail? Does she have a verbal tic? Was she — by some mystical, scientific, or by some other supernatural occurrence — able to transform into an actual cat? If you said yes or no to any of those questions, are we still talking about the same kind of “catgirl”?
The answer is no one really knows. But that hasn’t stopped people from trying to investigate the origins of this immensely popular character type. Does such a thing as "the first catgirl" truly even exist?
Black Hanekawa as she appears in Nekomonogatari
What We Talk About When We Talk About Catgirls
Broadly speaking, characters with animal ears are described as kemonomimi, which literally means animal ears. What about catgirl etymology? As expected, characters with cat ears are described as nekomimi, aka cat ears. The term nekomusume (cat girl or daughter, literally) has also been used, which is also notably the name of the character Neko-Musume from Shigeru Mizuki’s popular 1960s supernatural manga GeGeGe no Kitarō. Ralph F. McCarthy, the first to translate Kitarō in a bilingual edition published by Kodansha in 2002, localized this name as “Catchick.” This is all to say, the invented euphemism “catgirl” is just one of many used to describe the same thing: a cat-like girl who may or may not claw your eyes out with a mischievous smirk.
Mizuki's Neko-Musume is based on the bakeneko, an evil cat spirit who is sometimes able to change between human and feline form. Folklorist Matthew Meyer describes bakeneko as beginning their lives as regular house cats, but later accumulating more human-like traits as they mature. In many stories, they are depicted as lapping up the blood of murder victims, thereby granting them supernatural powers. Of course, they aren’t to be mistaken with nekomata — twin-tailed cat spirits, like Yōkai Watch’s Jibanyan. Much like the rest of Mizuki’s yōkai characters inspired by Japan’s supernatural folklore, Mizuki’s bakeneko are the byproduct of creative license. Neko-Musume doesn’t have cat ears like we might expect them today, but technically she fits the bill for a supernatural entity. Like modern-day big-eyed catgirls, your mileage may vary.
Detail from Utagawa Kuniyoshi's nekozuka print
Utagawa Kuniyoshi, a woodblock artist born in 1798, is well-known for his many cat-centric prints. One of his most renowned projects was a series of prints depicting the 1827 kabuki drama, Traveling Alone to the Fifty-three Stations. In 1852, Kuniyoshi printed a depiction of actor Onoe Kikugorō III as one of the play’s most memorable characters, the nekozuka, a cat monster living in Okazaki assuming the form of a human woman. Kuniyoshi draws this specter with two very noticeable cat ears — a statement that this is a suspicious supernatural entity. This same motif reoccurs in other Kuniyoshi works, noticeably a woodblock triptych depicting the same actor as a cat creature. Again, those notorious ears appear.
Onoe Kikugorō III illustrated by artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi
Is Kuniyoshi’s flair for fantastic flourish the missing link? The secret origin of all catgirls who ever dared meow in the modern age? Well, it’s a little more complicated than that.
Will the Real Catgirls Please Stand Up?
The bakeneko is but just one entry in Japanese folklore’s long love affair with cats. In contemporary media, the concept of a cat-influenced woman is seen in many horror films. In an entry on bakeneko for The Encyclopedia of Japanese Horror Films, scholar Michael Crandol writes: "Bakeneko tales were the single most popular subject of Japanese horror films from the dawn of cinema through the 1960s, with more than sixty such pictures released by 1970.” With films as early as 1938’s The Ghost Cat and The Mysterious Shamisen, to post-war modern classics like 1968’s Kuroneko, the bakeneko sub-genre in Japanese horror is a testament to its ubiquity. Not to mention the allure of mysterious intrigue.
Kaneto Shindo's Kuroneko asks the universal question: will my cat eat me when I die?
From this perspective, the origins of catgirls seem quite hairy. In fact, looking solely through the lens of the traditional bakeneko narrative is extremely limiting. Surely they all aren’t evil women possessed by vengeful spirits? So what else?
In May 2019, independent cartoonist Keiichi Tanaka posted a thread on Twitter asking about the possible origins of the catgirl design proper:
猫耳の元祖って『綿の国星』? 人間の顔で頭の上に猫の耳、このデザインってそれ以前にあった?
— はぁとふる倍国土 (@keiichisennsei) May 16, 2019
Among the replies included Osamu Tezuka’s character Hecate, a shape-shifting young witch who transforms into a half-humanoid, half-cat creature from the 1950s manga Princess Knight. Others mention Kuniyoshi’s cat-eared nekozuka woodblock prints, alongside the introduction of the classic Playboy Bunny costume in Japan. At first, it seems like Yumiko Ōshima’s manga Star of Cottonland may be the point of origin, but perhaps it’s not so easy to pin down. Did Tezuka, like so many innovations in early anime and manga, do it first? Are catgirls perhaps an underappreciated relic of the Edō period? What about classic '80s shōjo manga?
Feline magic in Tezuka's Princess Knight
Like many great debates in art history, the conclusion is ambiguous. Some might say Kuniyoshi unintentionally invented “catgirls” in the 19th century. Others may say Tezuka refined the concept, but Ōshima popularized the idea of cat ears on cute girls. If we examine catgirls strictly through the lens of anime and manga, the ambiguity and debate regarding "origins" become less of a fuzzy headache. Rather, we can re-frame the question: What works possibly helped catgirls bloom into the anime and manga-centric phenomenon we know and love today?
Chibi Neko, a cat who believes she is a girl
Ōshima’s Star of Cottonland was serialized in shōjo magazine LaLa from 1978 to 1987. The protagonist, Chibi Neko, is a kitten who views herself as a little girl. Because of this, the story is illustrated from her perspective and depicts her as human, with the caveat of having cat ears. In her 1995 book, Phänomen Manga: Comic-Kultur in Japan, scholar Jaqueline Berndt points to Ōshima being the possible originator of this now massively popular trope. In 1984, Star of Cottonland was adapted into OVA by Mushi Production, the animation studio famously known for adapting many of Tezuka’s major works.
Meanwhile, another OVA debuted in 1984: Bagi, the Monster of Mighty Nature. This was an original production written by Tezuka himself in response to gene recombination research approval by the Japanese government. Most famously, it featured an anthropomorphic feline woman named Bagi, who is undeniably more cat than girl. Bagi attempts to gain vengeance on humanity while simultaneously forging a troubled relationship with the action-hero male protagonist. While the Star of Cottonland OVA saw a limited home release, Bagi was broadcasted via the Nippon Television Network as a TV special.
Twin cyberpunk catgirls from Masamune's Dominion
Star of Cottonland and Bagi couldn’t be more thematically different, nonetheless, they both depend on catgirls for their worldbuilding. Masamune Shirow’s 1985 science-fiction manga, Dominion, follows a similar trend with its portrayal of android catgirls in a gritty cyberpunk setting. Adapted into a 1988 OVA series, Dominion: Tank Police features two puma twins, Anna and Uni, catgirls created as sentient love dolls. With their wild hair and overtly sexualized design, they undoubtedly have more in common with Tezuka’s violent Bagi than Ōshima’s initial cat-eared girls. They are, for lack of a better word, an otaku’s modern catgirl with their feral bloodthirst intact.
A Catgirl for All Seasons
A feature from Kadokawa’s Davinci News’ anime department titled "We Investigated ‘Why Are Nekomimi Girls So Cute” draws attention to the 2013 Fall anime season. Namely, ear and tail-equipped characters from Outbreak Company and Nekomonogatari. What’s the appeal of animal-eared girls, where did they come from, and why are they so seemingly trendy now? Again, Kuniyoshi’s fearsome kabuki portraits are mentioned, however with an important caveat: Kuniyoshi's cat ears were meant to strike fear, not inspire charm. The same could be said for the post-war boom in bakeneko films and their scream queen actresses. The article’s author even suggests that the prominence of the Playboy Bunny outfit, with its appeal to the uppercrust of society and cute tail, might’ve also added to a flourishing nekomimi cosplay craze. At some point, the strangeness of the concept became secondary to cute novelty.
Koyomi confronts the Sawari Neko possessing Hanekawa
This observation points out an important contemporary trend: ornamental catgirls, aka eyecandy, verus catgirls with a narrative purpose. Peak catgirl is somehow balancing both acts. Characters like Bakemonogatari’s Tsubasa Hanekawa — a high schooler who is possessed by the Sawari Neko spirit — unintentionally create the night-prowling, cat-eared alter-ego named “Black Hanekawa.” Black Hanekawa may perhaps be the modern mash-up of bakeneko tradition and otaku catgirl-ness we've long awaited. She speaks in cat-puns, obviously not human, and is most importantly a fearsome supernatural nuance. But on the flip-side, Black Hanekawa is everything we expect from the otaku’s catgirl: ears on top of her head, an eccentric personality, and a desire to exaggerate those feline quirks whenever possible for cuteness' sake.
ฅ(*ΦωΦ*)ฅ
The modern catgirl’s sensibility is to be a girl first, cat second. While hints of this archetype is seen in Shirow’s 1980s catgirl love androids, early 2000s series like Di Gi Charat and Tokyo Mew Mew have only further pushed this specific everyday flavor of catgirl agenda. Especially considering the infectious prevalence of mascot characters like Dejiko, a chibified catgirl with lucky cat bells on character goods stores across Akihabara. It’s no wonder they’ve effectively lost all their unncanniness. But besides the cultural context — there’s no real reason why cat ears just can’t be cute in themselves.
Dejiko and company promoting a GAMERS character goods store in Akihabara
Nowadays, you don’t have to look very hard to find a cat-eared character. Series like Re:Zero famously feature characters like Felix, whose cat-like qualities are part of the lore. Nintendo series like Fire Emblem have even newly added a “beast” race of animal-eared characters. Not to mention the massive popularity of franchises like Strike Witches and Kemono Friends in recent years, catgirls undoubtedly draw massively passionate fanbases. No matter where they came from, catgirls in all shapes and sizes, clawed, and de-clawed, have never stopped turning heads. The nyapocalypse is here to stay, fur-real.

Haiku for me: Poetry as a snapshot
Tumblr media
Many of the poems I write are haiku. When I started writing haiku 30 years ago, I was writing so-called free-form haiku, but for the past few years, I have been focusing on 5/7/5 standard haiku. However, I have mixed feelings about "standard form and seasonal haiku".
To be honest, I think haiku isn't strong enough to write about death poem. The restriction of 17 characters is big. But, a 31-character tanka will be enough. In addition, the restriction of "seasonal words" is also a big obstacle to the death poem. The free-form haiku (Free haiku) Taneda Santoka phrase is free from its restrictions. Even so, if you say that the phrase of Shuuoshi Mizuhara is boring! It seems that only a limited number of people, such as Basho Matsuo and Ryokan, can say death poem in 17 characters.
@Hydrangea ,and waterside supper early? (Shuuoshi Mizuhara)
Seasons are born because the earth's axis is tilted 23 degrees, which is just one of the physical phenomena that occur on the earth, and haiku, which relies entirely on it, is a second-class art of expression. I think.
This view owes much to Takeo Kuwabara's "Second Art Theory," which sharply questioned the ideal form of haiku.
I have also considered haiku, tanka, sonnets, and other forms of expression that are all fixed verses, I think the haiku is a "snapshot". I think that waka (tanka) is called "video" and Sonnet is called "movie". The haiku, which is a snapshot, is the best match for lyric poetry, and I have never seen a haiku that talks about lyric poetry or "romance." It seems that it's too crisp to sing love.
Conversely, Waka is an on-parade of love songs. It's a kind of video. Also, it tends to be moist. Sonnets are a form of poetry born in Italy, where Shakespeare left a masterpiece in England, and above all, flourished with French symbolic poetry. It is a total of 14 lines of poetry of 4, 4, 3, and 3. This poem is like watching a movie. These three typical poems are all fixed verses, aren't they?
That's all about my thoughts on haiku, but I'd like to add some recent thoughts. I think haiku is a "passive" literary art. On the other hand, I think other poems are more "active". In my case, I have time to take a walk early in the morning, but I meet all things in nature, and everything that jumps into my eyes, and make it with a photo. If I take a walk once, I will make at least one phrase. But this poetry-generating attitude isn't much different from taking a snapshot. Can you say that haiku is not a vessel that expresses a big idea , but a conditioned reflexive poetry attitude?
Haiku reformer(self-proclaimed): Shiki Masaoka's "Sketch phrase", I feel a little suspicious of this as well. Shiki, who called the phrase that loves the moon "ordinary: commonplace," and his devotion to classical literature, which also has the charm of this moon, have nothing to do with the haiku that he aims for. He tells the fact that he thought it was harmful. What is haiku? ... If you take this in a narrow sense, you may come up with a view like Shiki. Shiki probably rejected the "relics of old-fashioned poetry source " on behalf of the moon. However, I think that poetry, including haiku, can be called a great literature if you can think of big ideas. Sketch phrase ... It's a little weak.
A word of the day: That said, I still work in haiku today. No one can do anything. Oh, and I wrote that it's difficult to talk about romance in haiku, but Madoka Mayuzumi and others wrote quite bold romance phrases.
In my late twenties, when I lived in the mountains, I foresaw that the results would be harsh, and I wrote a phrase:
@The Mantis prays at the Sky, Eagle’s tears.
: I saw a mantis caught by a shrike (bird) and skewered on a tree branch, and applied it to myself. ... The bad result was right.

Japanese Comics of the 2010s Part 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tackling a retrospective of any given catergory of an entire 10 years in publishing, an industry where only a few years fell much further in the past, is challenging to say the least. For myself these ten years have meant moving five times. This handily enough means a lot interaction and deliberation with the books that make up my home library. So, in setting out to say what was published this decade what was then translated (or is upcoming) or what’s missing I am offering only my personal slice. Picking ten titles is even more excruciating. In fact, I’ve fudged it a bit by making not just one list. Nevertheless, I hope each roll I’m presenting has a combination of the familiar, the less recalled and something overlooked.
While the previous decade was first marked by envious growth typically characterized as the manga boom overseas, with the Great Recession and general maladies from industry practices taking their toll the 2010s began in North America with continuing anxiety, layoffs and news of more than one publisher folding. That is before the steady resurgence, new endeavors and gains that as 2019 closes out leaves fans of Japanese comics who read English in a pretty good place. Depending on what corner of the Anglophone world you find yourself in, or other places, there are different challenges and room for improvement of course. But it is hard to deny how new methods of getting content to an audience and the variety on offer have marked the 2010s. Especially since most titles finding their way on my shelves are indeed available in official translation.
So, without further ado…
  Land of the Lustrous
With a striking animated adaptation, sublime artwork and a unique sci-fi story about genderless gem-like beings involved in a violent conflict, Land of the Lustrous by Haruko Ichikawa is likely one of the most notable titles in the last few years. Still ongoing it’s one comic you don’t want to miss in English from Kodansha Comics USA.
  The Ancient Magus’ Bride
An ongoing darker fantasy comic drawing from various folklore, The Ancient Magus’ Bride by Kore Yamazaki about a modern orphaned teenage girl becoming the apprentice to a Magus with an animal skull head has become somewhat of a phenomenon also leading to an animated adaptation, spin-offs and novels. Available in English from Seven Seas.
  xxxHolic Rei
Thirty years on the group CLAMP has produced numerous multimedia franchises but, also been just as notable for numerous hiatuses due to health, several unfinished works or, if there is closure some divisive endings. xxxHolic which began in the early 2000s is only one of their series to be revisited of late. Whatever your feelings on the path this supernatural story of a witch owning a special shop and the teenage boy who begins working for her because he’s plagued by spirits, this bewitching example by CLAMP deserves credit where it’s due. During a period when I wasn’t really reading Japanese comics, I was at least reading xxxHolic. So, I followed right along with the continuation xxxHolic Rei out in English from Kodansha Comics USA.
  My Brother's Husband
Gengoroh Tagame who has been creating comics for decades reached new audiences during the 2010s. In part because of numerous translations of his adults works appearing finally in English but, also for his general audience series My Brother’s Husband. An awarding winning title and lovely addition to LGBTQ+ books, I reviewed the English edition previously here.
  Neo Parasyte
If you don’t know anything about Parasyte, a horror comic series from the late 80s that has experienced a bit of a revival through adaptations this decade, the Neo Parasyte anthologies featuring short comics by a variety of artists in tribute are maybe not easy introductory fare.  I however do remember the original Parasyte and happen to love some of the artists who contributed to either Neo Parasyte book (separated by target audience F for female, M for male) such as Moto Hagio or, Kaori Yuki. Available in English from Kodansha Comics USA.
Our Dreams at Dusk: Shimanami Tasogare
A realistic four volume LGBTQ+ series by x-gender artist Yuhki Kamatani, Shimanami Tasogare has gained praise by readers in many parts of the world. With the English edition concluding this month from Seven Seas, it’s a great time to pick this special series up. Read my review here.
  Cats of the Louvre
Taiyo Matsumoto has made a name for himself with a distinct style and choice in subject matter. Here he weaves tales set around the famous museum and cats calling it home. Available in English as a VIZ Signature release.
  Chi's Sweet Adventure
It’s quite something be able to have a career span the decades with a creation continuing for many years as well, but Konata Konami makes it look simple with her charming cat comics. Especially the exploits of one little kitten named Chi that can delight young and old. A bestselling series from Vertical Comics.
  My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness
If there are examples from the last several years that are the most memorable, then likely the essay comics from Kabi Nagata such as My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness or My Solo Exchange Diary further detailing her personal sufferings come to mind. I reviewed My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness in 2017.
Tumblr media
Op: Yoake Itaru no Iro no Nai Hibi
By a favourite artist of mine Kou Yoneda, Op is an ongoing series (the second compiled volume was very recently published in Japan), featuring a 38-year-old insurance investigator with a motley cast of characters around him. Unfortunately, this title is still unlicensed in English. (C’mon Kodansha.) But I felt it deserved mention and you can read my review of the first Japanese volume.
Now on to for part 2...

Thoughts and differences ENG-JP for Clear Card 46
Tumblr media
As usual, let’s start this post with the Gif Of The Month:
Tumblr media
This is not only representative of me after reading Chapter 46, but also of Sakura herself in this chapter. Yes. Want to know more? Follow me under this damned cut, but not before visiting the official website for the release of the Clear Card chapters, in 6 languages! Chapter 46 will be uploaded for free hours away from now! Clamp-fans.com
If you still need a HQ version of the Japanese raws, drop me a line.
Deaaaaar lord the feels in this chapter. It’s usually like this, when the plot is too quiet, it’s usually because CLAMP have to dump a emotional load on you on the next one! You gotta love them. XD
The color page was a real surprise this month: it’s Touya onii-chan! And what a beautiful illustration, too! I think we all miss him a little bit, don’t we?
The text on the japanese color page says “Touya, the brother who's a bit of a meanie to Sakura, but the one she can count on the most”. Awww. We can also get a glimpse of the cover of the future volume 9 that will be released on October 13th, and LET ME TELL YOU: I love that costume!! Is this the same color scheme of volume 9 of the original series? I think it is, right?
We were left with a HUUGE cliffhanger last month: Sakura was about to yank the hood of MCF down, in real life this time! But do you really think CLAMP would’ve let her do that without a clear indication that this was the finale of the series?! Of course not! And indeed Sakura has to back away last minute because uh-oh, MCF-chan isn’t too keen on letting her do that. After a harsh confrontation, Sakura asks if they’re the one appearing in her dreams (”invading” is a liberty of Kodansha Comics, just to start with the wrong foot: the verb Sakura uses is simply 来た, “has come”, “has come to my dreams”). Do you think for once, just for once, MCF gets out of their mutism? Not a chance!
And we start with the first, major difference in the JP->ENG translation of this month: ENG: “I knew it. It’s you, Sya-” JP: “(Are you) really....Sya-...”
Once more, when I’ve read in the ENG version “I knew it”, I thought I would find Sakura saying やっぱり in the JP version....but again I find something different that changes completely the tone of the sentence. Sakura’s speech is broken, all we get is a 本当に and a 小 which is the beginning of Syaoran’s name (confirmed by the furigana). Yet, it’s shocking how different the two versions sound: the ENG one is a Sakura that has given up on Syaoran, who has drawn her conclusions and it’s almost accusing him of being the MCF all this time. You can feel pain and disappointment in that “I knew it”. But the JP, oh, the JP version is more true to our Sakura. Judging by the building of the phrase, she was about to ask MCF if they really are Syaoran, after all. THIS is our Sakura! She is totally clinging on the last hope that maybe, just maybe, it’s not really him. Sakura is utterly confused by this dream she’s been having, we all know that, and the doubt is eating her sanity away. So this is not to say that she’s not doubting him or that she’s blindly believing that the dream is not true, because otherwise it wouldn’t come up more and more often, as of lately. But the way the sentence is composed in JP sounds less “attacking” than the ENG one, keeping Sakura in-character till the very end, when Syaoran appears and clears the doubt away, for the moment.
Tumblr media
And here, we get the second major difference between the ENG version and the JP version: as some of my friends already correctly guessed on the Clow Kingdom Discord server, the JP version never assigns a gender to the identity of MCF, but actually makes Sakura use the genderless , “kid”.
Tumblr media
Kodansha Comics.....you had the perfect genderless term in English to keep this as intact as possible, and you still managed to f*ck it up? Who told you that this was a “boy”? Who? In Italian we’ll have big headaches to translate this in the correct way, because we don’t have a gender neutral term, but you had it easy for you!!!! Why???
The JP version keeps referring to MCF in the most neutral way possible, even when Syaoran asks “where is that person?”, using そいつ which is literally the contraction of そのやつ , a pretty rude way of saying "that person”. Syaoran only needed to hear “dream” and “kid” to literally turn into his rude, cold self ready to wolf down (lol) whoever interrupted the cheerleading practice of his princess. You can also feel how the tension is sky-high, with the choice of words used. Love it.
MCF disappeared, and Sakura captures a new card....surprise surprise, it’s MIRAGE!! Yes, an anime-only card made its (very) late debut in the manga! I was really surprised and fascinated by this choice, but it’s very welcome, as I remember the Mirage episode of the anime as my absolute favorite one! This mess of a mess (lol) needs a good talk, so Syaoran takes Sakura home. And although we SyaoSaku shippers always hope he brings her home to have some alone time for romantic sh*t, it’s actually always to have a heart-wrenching, depressing talk. And so, the big scene starts with Sakura sitting uncomfortably (you can see it straight in the first panel) on Syaoran’s couch, “talking about the weather”, or rather, saying “So beautiful. There’s a flower inside” when she sees the fancy tea Syaoran brings to her.
Tumblr media
And I LOVE, LOOOOVE Syaoran’s face and his “Sakura.” that screams “BABE, CUT THIS SH*T OUT” from afar. He’s so done with her stubborn tendency to keep everything inside and struggle alone with her problems (OH REALLY, I KNOW ANOTHER KID WHO DOES THAT ALL THE TIME). He starts his speech slightly differently from the English version: “You don’t need to overdo it”, in the meaning of “stop trying so hard -to cover your discomfort-). He wants her to tell it straight like it is, and be honest about how she feels. You see, I find extremely important how Syaoran decided to approach this. He knows a lot of this situation depends on her state of mind (if she feels stuff a bit too much, a new card will be born), so he probably decided to stop beating around the bush and be honest, which is the thing he can do best. He understood that tip-toeing around it won’t make it any better. Sakura, at that request, thanks him, but her face is literally one step away from breaking into a desperate cry. I don’t know how she managed to hold it up, and honestly I started breaking up too, at her face. It’s like when you see someone crying and you start crying too. I didn’t see her cry but with that single panel I could hear her weeping. Sakura says “What happened earlier...was (another) something I made unconsciously happen, right?” and Syaoran replies “You said the person appearing in your dreams was on top of the fence...Is it ok if I ask you what those dreams are like?” which are slightly different from the ENG version, but they don’t change that much. In the JP version I just feel better Syaoran’s extreme care and kindness (you’ll see it later too) in asking Sakura to open up about this issue that is eating her sanity away since too long. He does really give off the vibe of asking permission to intrude into something so personal like her dreams.
Sakura starts telling about her dreams, since the very beginning. She doesn’t skip parts, she even makes a point to mention the coincidence (?) of those dreams starting exactly when Syaoran came back to Japan. Syaoran immediately feels a pang of regret when Sakura says that the cards she dreamt about as clear, turned out to be really so in real life too. Of course, that was Syaoran’s doing, and this makes me wonder: was her power alerting her of something that was about to happen minutes away? Sakura tries to make Syaoran feel better, but as she speaks the words, her smile is so forced and contrived. Yeah, she might think that he did everything just thinking about her wellbeing, but it didn’t contribute to her mental health at all. We all know that.
Tumblr media
As Sakura tells the content of her numerous dreams, Syaoran grows more and more irritated, finally asking “what kind of person are they?” and again we find the word 奴 for ‘person’, this time in kanji form, which will lead us to the reason why Syaoran is growing so irritated with the talk. Yatsu is either a derogatory or a familiar term to indicate a “guy”, or even ‘he’, ‘she’, ‘him’ or ‘her’. Now, since Syaoran doesn’t have any familiarity with the MCF in Sakura’s dreams, only the derogatory option is left. Why is Syaoran so angry? The answer comes naturally as Sakura describes MCF: they are about the same height as her, so it can’t be Kaito. Yes, we find out that Syaoran was (understandably) believing that Sakura was seeing Kaito in her dreams, and his speech pattern changed automatically to a very rude and spiteful one. He was already so convinced that it might have been Kaito, that a couple of panels later he thinks to himself “So it’s not that person?”, weirdly using ano hito あの人 this time. His blood boiled down a little bit? The magic of Ohkawa’s script, uh? You can extrapolate so much from a single word.
Syaoran asks to Sakura, always very politely, to use the Record card to show MCF more closely, so he could be of any help in case he knew anything about them. This is the first request to which Sakura answers with “...”, probably because she knows where this will lead them? Anyway she doesn’t look really happy to do this. Syaoran’s idea pays off, as he indeed knows something about MCF: he knows where their robe comes from. His JP speech is almost the same of the ENG one, save for one particular: the family was pretty famous particularly because they’ve been generating powerful magicians from generation to generation. Now you can understand their scorn and fixation with Akiho’s lack of powers. Their popularity comes from that.
Tumblr media
But it’s when Syaoran politely asks Sakura if she feels like trying to use Record to show him her dreams directly, that she falters. She says “...okay” but she doesn’t want to do it. She doesn’t want to, because she knows what he will see. And he’s the last person she’d want to see it. But she has to comply, because it’s simply fair that he comes to know something directly related to him. So with the spell “Project the figure of that person who appeared in my dreams”, the dreams where MCF appears play out, and Syaoran notices immediately the dragon. The well long forgotten dragon. He doesn’t know it, but he thinks it’s something made with a spell, and he adds “I wonder just who could have that degree of power to be able to manifest something like this...”...quite different in some nuance from the ENG version. From Syaoran’s speech I can produce 2 guesses for who manifested the dragon: it could be Kaito, or...Sakura herself. The dreams play out until they come to the fateful moment of Sakura yanking MCF’s hood off, revealing a dead-looking ‘Syaoran’: Sakura just can’t stand the sight of it, her pain has become physically visible, it has become her nightmare. In that “STOP” screamed in her head there’s all the anxiety, all the pain, all the confusion and grief that vision has caused to her until now. And I honestly thought I would find in the JP version something like “dame!”, but no, Sakura is really using the verb 止まる, “to stop”. She either wanted the herself in the dream to halt from revealing MCF’s identity, or she wanted the projection to stop altogether. Either way, we don’t get an immediate effect of that strong thought, because Syaoran *does* see himself under that robe....and he’s quite shocked. He’s even more alarmed when Sakura says “I’ve passed out in my room before...this is the dream I saw back then” (I love seeing Syaoran getting all worried and worked up over Sakura). Can you feel again how forced and unconvincing is Sakura’s smile, when she says “I know”, in response to Syaoran saying he doesn’t own that robe? She desperately wants him to know, feel that she’s devoted to him and doesn’t believe what that dream shows. That she trusts him forever. But her face betrays her heart, and how shaken it is by that vision. Syaoran just answers with one of his “...” which honestly are NEVER a good sign. He could be doubting Sakura’s “I know”. He could be hiding something. Or he could be already thinking about what this will mean for their future. The projection Record made starts to get some kind of “disturbance”, and Sakura realizes they’re in front of a new card: ‘Dreaming’. Of course, after that strong thought she had before, she manifested her utter denial in the form of a Card. ‘Dreaming’ is the manifestation of her refusal to believe Syaoran could be the one trying to hurt her. In fact, she’s all giddy to realize “I knew it was a [Dream]!”, but Syaoran is quick to shatter her hopes (what we were saying about stopping tip-toeing around her?), and he does it using the Card’s name. The kanji used for the name of the Dreaming card is 夢見 “yumemi”, literally “seeing dreams”, but if you’re a long time CLAMP fan your alarms are already going all off, by this time. CLAMP use the term Yumemi to usually indicate the ability to foretell the future in dreams, and the people possessing that power. And Syaoran breaks Sakura’s hopes (and heart) precisely telling her “Yumemi can also mean ‘foretelling dream’ ”. This is the last, important speech that gets translated differently in the ENG version, totally erasing Syaoran’s citation of the Card’s name in its kanji form, and adding unnecessary words. We had to go out big, you know? -__- Anyway, I just don’t think the Dreaming card has definitively solved the “issue” of MCF: someone wearing those robes in the future WILL cause Sakura big problems, it’s just about finding out WHO will be under those robes.
We’re basically left with the last editorial text saying “What is the outcome of the future yet to be seen, which the cards are pointing at...?”, feeling this sense of distress and extreme curiosity about how next chapter will play out: will they change completely scene? Or will Syaoran FINALLY take the chance to explain to Sakura the real degree of her foretelling powers, and the future another powerful yumemi saw, which has set in motion his whole journey back to Japan?
Loved this chapter, the amount of drama in it, and the straightforward mention of “yumemi”, which is such a powerful word in the CLAMP kingdom...I hope also to not see people saying “NOTHING HAPPENS11!!!1ELEVEN!!” this month because really....if you’re not satisfied after this, you better drop Clear Card entirely! XDDD Waiting for you guys’ reactions to this chapter! <3
Ps. Kaito’s been missing since two chapters already, he’s being too quiet, I’M WORRIED!!!

Kodansha Announces New Cardcaptor Sakura Manga Edition and More
Kodansha Comics rolled out some new announcements during Anime NYC, including a mix of new licenses and the start of a KC 4 ALL campaign that will introduce new digital-first manga to audience members of all ages starting November 20.
Kicking off the new licenses is Cardcaptor Sakura: Collector's Edition, which features high-quality art and lettering, a revised translation, and all the color pages from the original Japanese run, all in a hardcover collection that will run for nine volumes. The first is due out in summer 2019.
Here's the Japanese cover, followed by a breakdown of the rest from Kodansha's announcement.
Cardcaptor Sakura Collector’s Edition- Coming Summer 2019 The new release of the classic graphic novel series from revered creators CLAMP, featuring a newly-revised translation, high-quality art and lettering, and all the color pages from the original Japanese run. Each hardcover will also include new cover art by CLAMP and a  “clow card,” and Kodansha teased that readers who collect all nine volumes are in for a special treat!
Tales of Berseria (Summer 2019) A four-volume adaptation of popular RPG Tales of Berseria, by artist Nobu Aonagi. Bandai Namco Entertainment released Tales of Berseria on the Playstation 4 and PC in North American in January 2017
Fate: Grand/Order (Summer 2019) A two-volume series based on Type-Moon’s popular mobile game Fate/Grand Order, titled Fate/Grand Order -mortalis:stella, by creator Shiramine. Fate/Grand Order has been available on mobile platforms iOS and Android in English since June 2017.
Princess Jellyfish Box Set coming Summer 2019 A collector’s box set of their hit story about geek girls in Tokyo, Princess Jellyfish. The complete series box set will feature all nine paperback volumes of Akiko Higashimura’s acclaimed series, which was adapted into an anime in 2010 before becoming an English-language bestseller in 2016.
  KC F ALL digital-first series:
Debuts November 20! Good Dog, Cerberus! by Moha Arimura Cerberus—the guard dog of the underworld—is a clumsy puppy who can’t do his job. Although Cerberus is constantly causing trouble for his master, Hades, he is always forgiven for being just so darn cute. So goes this wonderfully fluffy tale of life in the underworld. This heartwarming full-color comic is a must-see for all the dog-lovers out there!
Debuts November 27! Blissful Land by Ichimon Izumi Khang Zhipa is a 13-year-old doctor’s apprentice living in a mountain village in 18th-century Tibet. One day, when he gets back from collecting medicinal herbs, he finds a bride-to-be and her wedding party will be resting at his home for the night. The bride’s name is Moshi Rati and it turns out she’s actually Khang Zhipa’s fiancee from another land, here to stay! Enjoy this heartwarming slice-of-life tale woven by a kind-hearted boy and his mysterious bride.
Debuts December 4! Red Riding Hood’s Wolf Apprentice by Ichimon Izumi
In this richly imagined forest-world, peopled by beasts, humans, and hunters, the legendary red-haired hunter, nicknamed “Red Riding Hood,” encounters a strange girl, half-human, half-beast. Despite being barely able to communicate, the two forge a bond and Red Riding Hood takes on a new apprentice. Join them on their journey as they overcome the walls between them, despite belonging to different species, and learn to survive in a sometimes scary, always magical fantasy universe.
Debuts December 11! Crocodile Baron by Takuya Okada
His name is Alfred J. Donson, novelist and crocodile. Together with his very good friend (who is a rabbit), he undertakes gentlemanly adventures in culinary excellence throughout Japan, encountering other intriguing denizens of the animal kingdom along the way. With delightfully drawn talking-animal characters, Crocodile Baron demonstrates the absolute importance of good taste and that sometimes it takes an animal to show us how to be truly civilized!
There were also some new novel announcements from Vertical, including Masquerade and the Nameless Woman (January 2019), Katanagatari volume 2 (May 2019), Sherlock Holmes: A Scandal in Japan (May 2019), Nekomonogatari White audio book (early 2019), and Monogatari artist VOFAN's art book, Colorful Dreams (October 2019).
