I will admit that before F&C came out I was a bit worried about the Simon stuff. Because I was one of those folks who really appreciated Betty’s arc in ‘Adventure Time’ as a really beautifully tragic parable about obsession and love and the need to embrace change. 

Betty was giving so much of herself to this quest to bring back Simon as she remembered him, and despite every possible sign and omen telling her this was impossible and she should just accept him as the Ice King now - she succeeded. But in the process she was irrevocably changed into someone else and then into something else. Something who couldn’t even be on the same plane of existence as her beloved newly-restored Simon. 

I always thought it was a wonderfully executed arc, so I was kinda worried about the possibility of continuing it. I mean, I wasn’t against giving Betty and Simon a happier ending - I was just worried about how they could pull it off without weakening the themes of the original Betty arc. Or on the other hand, a story where the ‘Come Along With Me’ status quo for these two doesn’t change has the risk of coming out as, well, kinda unsatisfying. 

But I held out hope that, like many times before, the AT Crew were going to come up with another option I wasn’t even considering at the time and this one will just totally knock it out of the park and…. Yeah, that’s basically exactly what happened. They managed to turn Betty’s tragedy into something more bittersweet, not really by adding in a new resolution - just by taking her situation ever since the finale and recontextualizing it.

Because while expanding into an incomprehensible goddess of Chaos beyond any mortal understanding was certainly not a fate Betty ever wanted. It turns out becoming a grand cosmic being to which any mortal life, including Simon Petrikov, is a mere speck is….. Exactly what she needed to outgrow her unhealthy codependent obsessive mindset that got her in the situation to begin with.

After giving up so much of her life for his sake, because Simon was her ‘everything’ - now her perspective and existence has expanded so much that she can finally see Simon as she should’ve seen him from the start. Not as her entire life, but as a lovely and wonderful part of it.

I mean... obviously it would’ve been better for everyone involved if Betty didn’t need to become a literal eldritch abomination to get this perspective, but with all the various Bad Choices Simon and Betty have made over the course of their lives, this still adds a bittersweet streak of relief and peace to what was originally a very straightforwardly tragic ending for a character.

“Why? I… clapped for you!”

(Follow up to this post about how Simon and the F&C kid’s conflict mirroring real world conflicts about creatives distancing themselves from still beloved works and new fans not understanding why because they weren’t there to see first hand why the creative would do so) This bit with Cake and the pillow person made me think of creative-fan conflicts

Immediately, it made me think of the Simon and Astrid’s conflict, but from her point of view— she’s being hurt by the person she looks up to and she doesn’t understand why. Shes a kid. She isn’t doing anything wrong by loving something, but she’s also hurting Simon by making her enjoyment his problem. She needs someone to pull her aside and tell her he’s lashing out in pain and she seriously needs to leave him alone, that he doesn’t own her anything. But she’s still being hurt by him back, and while Simon sees that (his call to Marcy where he tries to bring it up), he also seems oblivious to how he’s hurting her in the moment — like how Cake gleefully doesn’t think about how messed up it is to rip apart a walking pillow until the pillow speaks up

This could also parallel semi-unintentionally problematic works by oblivious (or not so oblivious) creators — Cake caused a lot if destruction with her song, but she only really got into the song when she was encouraged by others (other creatives specifically). She hurt the people in the stalls around her, even hurt the people who encouraged her in the first place, and finally literally tore apart her fan. It brings to mind (massive simplification here) a certain book series that had a lot of messed up stereotypes in its characters that still captures the minds and imaginations of many, before the author attacked a large portion of people that had fans part of it. Cake even tried to justify her hurting others by saying she was working on instinct and doesn’t apologize eve though she’s very much in the wring (to be fair to Cake, the author has doubled down on her shitty agenda, while Cake had no agenda at all)

Fionna and Cake is exploring existential themes, which I love, but it also seems to be exploring the various relationships between fan and creator, and how those relationships can turn toxic for a number of reasons, but how they’re often born from genuine love and joy (Prismo created F&C because he loved watching Finn and Jake but wanted something for himself, Astrid is trying to connect with Simon because she things he’s the same man as the person who sat down to write the books she loves, Cake made her song because it was fun, etc)

Did you seen new Fionna and Cake trailer?

Heck yeah! It seems to me like they're tapping into the creative force behind Bee and Puppycat; I got a very similar vibe from the trailer. No surprise, given Fionna and Cake were originally created by Natasha Allegri.

I'm kinda surprised they went with the Real World Crosses Over Into Fantasy angle, but considering Fionna and Cake as WE knew them were based on Ice King's own fanfiction, it kinda puts a fun twist on our expectations. From what I could tell in the trailer, it looks kinda like Fionna will be spirited away from "the real world" via some Prismo multiverse shenanigans, and we know that Simon and Marcy will be involved (because of course they will, that's one of original Adventure Time's most beloved plot elements), and considering Fionna and Cake are an extension of Ice King's imagination, maybe they'll write it so that his stories were always based on a grain of personal experience, but he just can't remember cause his brain is all fried. Something like that!

I will repeat however, I'm STERNLY DISAPPOINTED in the lack of the best F&C character so far!

(I'm also curious how different the characters will be portrayed than the versions of them I've written in my own fanfics, lmao)

I fully busted out laughing at the idea of the god of therapy because I keep seeing a scene where the Bridgertons are at the peak of their dumbassery and yet still refusing to deal with their daddy issues and Penelope just loses it and hauls their asses to family counselling/group therapy and when the siblings refuse or throw a hissy fit, Penelope channels her inner Portia and instills fear and the promise of unspeakable punishments in to their hearts siiighhhh BAMF Penelope my beloved

I fully busted out laughing reading this.

I love to imagine ABDEG refusing to go. (Colin's a simp and will do whatever his queen says while dragging Francesca with him. He'll go, but he's not going alone. Penelope just has to look at Hyacinth before she's running after C and F.) So Penelope only smiles and then goes tell Kate and Sophie, who by this point are married queens of their own domains.

Anthony and Benedict fold so fast when not only do they have their scary sister in-law who's threatening to cause her own famine but also now their wives demanding they finally go to therapy. The boys drag Daphne and Eloise with them. Like Penelope and Hyacinth, Gregory only has to look at Kate before he's off to therapy.

During the first session, the queens are having a friend's brunch with SPMG telling them they FINALLY got the Bridgertons to start therapy. Simon makes a joke that they might start calming down now.

Simon lives to regret that because even with therapy, the Bridgertons are STILL causing chaotic and scandalous courtships. Starting with his and Daphne's, when Anthony announced their engagement, that was such a surprise the groom didn't even know.

The spouses are eventually gonna get uno reversed when the Bridgertons one day go "Hey I have an idea, maybe you should come with." It's all done with love of course.

thinking back i really liked simons ending in f&c. betty was right he DOES treat the women in his life as though they have no agency and thats not the kind of character flaw that writers usually textually acknowledge about a beloved character like simon lol. he let betty basically give up her research and sacrifice so much just to be with him and he barely even realized it and he sacrificed himself for marceline without really taking her feelings or choices into account although tbf she was a child. as ice king he kidnapped princesses not because he was a bad guy but because he was lonely and fundamentally didnt consider whether or not they would even be into him because thats just not a calculation he had ever had to make before. and he didnt think about how fionna might feel or the implications of his actions on her or her world beyond like sacrificing himself for a girl. again. such a realistic pattern of behavior for a man and it was cool to me that it was acknowledged as a flaw. i wish at the end it had shown him hanging out with marceline though like thats his daughter and basically the only woman in his life he can truly reconcile with
