Lance Stroll Driving Style/Preference Analysis
I’ve seen a lot of videos and posts online about different driver’s driving styles, so I wanted to do a bit of in depth analysis for Lance since
I haven’t really seen a lot about his and
I think his is very interesting and differs from a large portion of rest of the grid
Disclaimer: I’m no expert or professional at this :)) It’s very much out of personal interest and looking at his growth as a driver. Be aware that styles can change depending on the car, and I could even argue that there are no true “styles”, which is why I like using the word “preferences” as well.
Introduction
Some things that I’ve seen being discussed when it comes to driver’s preferences include:
Early vs. late breaking into turns
Agressive vs. smooth steering
Preference of Understeer vs. oversteer
Just to name a few but it all plays a part in how fast you exit a corner, tire degradation, and possibility of getting overtaken.
Lance’s “Style”
On the grid, there are a lot of drivers who vary in their approach to how they take corners, such as Checo who always anticipates the best line to take, or Fernando who drives aggressively and uses a braking area to go into a corner without losing speed exiting it.
Lance differs because he’s always been a true reactive driver, meaning he relies more on instinctive feel. You can see it on his onboards, how he’s constantly adjusting the wheel and makes very erratic inputs while driving.
This is in contrast to other drivers who we see handle the steering wheel in a smoother way that doesn’t make it look like they’re wrestling with their car. In his first year of F1 especially, he was significantly overdriving the car.
He uses very deep braking and carries a lot of speed into the corner because of this. From the outside, it seems like he only plans up to the middle of the corner and somehow fights his way from there to the straight, but his reaction time is amazing, therefore he doesn’t completely lose the car. You can see how his approach is unorthodox.
Quali
If you’ve been following Lance for a bit, you probably know that quali has never been his strong suit, he’s definitely more of a Sunday driver. And this correlates directly to his style.
No two laps from him are exactly the same, and since it’s not very smooth, his one-lap pace suffers.
“Rainmaster”
Lance’s driving is far from ideal for a dry quali, but this is why he reacts very well to unforeseen events and changing conditions. On a wet track, drivers have to constantly correct themselves, but he’s already doing that normally.
After his pole position in the wet, he said, “In these conditions you can’t think about everything. You just have to focus on the next corner”. This just highlights how he literally takes it one corner at a time, acting on instinct, as opposed to forecasting what he’s gonna do in the next corner. Ironically, people have said that this instinctive driving reminds them of Gilles Villeneuve.
Adding on, his frantic steering style is really good for heating up cold tires in the wet.
Growth
I would say that over the years, he’s definitely learned how to tone down the way he handles the car. For example, his tire management used to be very bad as his steering would just overwork them.
But even just looking at recent races such as Brazil and Las Vegas, he manages to go on long stints, even exceeding the predicted tire life which would be impossible if he still drove as aggressively as before. His reaction time has only gotten better as well, often gaining places at the start.
However, if you look at his onboards, you can still tell his driving apart from anyone else’s, and I don’t think his way of driving will ever change.
He has such a natural talent for feel and being able to quickly react in the most extreme conditions, but that has forced him to work on other aspects of racing such as tire management and one-lap race pace.
One reason why it might have taken him longer to develop his racing may be his jump from F3 straight to F1. Lower series cars have less grip overall, which suits his style, as opposed to F1 cars that have good grip. So you can probably see why he struggled in the beginning.
Conclusion
As you can see, his driving is quite different, and it shows through his strengths and weaknesses. Reactive driving was more the norm back F1 from the 70’s to early 2000’s, but went away as cars became smoother. I actually think he’d be really good at rally driving…
But I dunno I guess this makes me like him even more because of all the work he’s had to put in to make his unconventional driving work in modern F1.
Extra Onboard from 2017 His Suzuka start in the wet Onboard from LVGP

wanted to point out"knowing when to quit" is valid for family and personal reasons, plus the fact that he felt fulfilled in nico's case (and i see why rivals would 👀👀 at the lack of ambition, which isnt fair but i get it) but i don't see how the whole thing of quitting when at the top is supposed to be better than not as if 41 yrs old fernando wasn't still elite or lewis whose 2023 was better than some of his championship years imo, the both of them in mid cars and better than most of the grid. i don't think they're chasing ghosts, they clearly still enjoy what they do, and they're good at it. winning isn't everything, retirement just comes down to what an athlete really wants and feels like, not where they are in their career
as i was writing this i realized i couldn't think of anyone from that gen outside of lewis and fernando who hasn't gone out sad lmao so idk
you misunderstand me. I'm not saying every driver should retire immediately after winning, I'm talking about framing and how certain decisions can be viewed, acceptance and fulfilment in f1
they're absolutely excellent drivers, and have lucked into staying in good cars (lewis more than fernando) and worked hard into staying in good form along with their natural talent. they're easily better than most of the grid.
but you're absolutely kidding yourself if you don't think fernando isn't chasing ghosts. Fernando retired from f1 in 2018 in that mclaren scoring 50 points in the championship.
He won Le Mans twice and Daytona in 2018/2019, before he came back to f1 because he still believes in that 33rd win and 3rd championship. if drivers only drove for how they felt like and not where they are in their career, then fernando wouldn't have quit f1 if he was in a better car.
The last time Fernando won a race is in 2013, more 10 years ago, and he keeps posting 33 because he believes, even I'm rooting for it too. But it is absolutely chasing a dream that only now this last year's Aston's early performance gives us recency bias of hope.
likewise, lewis and toto have affirmed multiple times that their goal is the 8th wdc. it's not so much as a ghost as the mythical 8th wdc that no one in the sport has done and lewis has to believe he can because his whole career has been achieving the unthinkable.
yes ofc they enjoy racing, and they're some of the best at it, but this conversation is about world champions and neither of them would keep on driving if they weren't chasing that championship/win. the win (for champion drivers) IS everything.
so what happens if fernando wins the 33rd? or 3rd championship? he will gun for the 34th, 4th championship, and he will be 50 years old, driving in circles until he can accept that it isn't coming. that's when drivers retire... in f1 from what we have seen if you're a world champion you can only retire when you're no longer on top of the game and have accepted it. nico was the only one who didn't.

this is so stupid and overthought and pointless but lol it's me sooooo
like I literally got into f1blr through videos of Lando following Carlos and Daniel around and finding them absolutely hilarious and just being their personal squealing little chew toy/satellite. so believe me I LOVE that. and god knows I've written enough about how Lando needed/sometimes still needs to hide behind these big bold alpha personalities.
but I think the ??? that transpired for some of us over the gradual blossoming of Lando's dynamic with Oscar had a lot to do with how much Lando opened up in front of our eyes bc of his new position w Oscar and how that developed. he literally said how much it felt weird for him to imagine himself in the older/more experienced position and you can see in the super early content how much Lando couldn't get a read on Oscar bc there wasn't the usual bromance stuff he's so used to. but Oscar also was so mature and calm that he didn't need Lando to do for him what Carlos and Daniel were for him.
and it seems so stupid but it's almost like Oscar hitting that growth spurt and his voice getting a little deeper sort of clicked things into place for Lando?? bc Oscar had been living alone and cooking for himself and in a serious relationship for years and he didn't need anyone to raise him or protect him like Lando needed as a rookie. and he had lived away from his family or a support system from around 14/15 so he was fully used to finding his way around and navigating new places largely alone.
but him getting taller and broader suddenly fit with his personality so much better. he didn't have his cherub Prema face clashing with how cool and confident he was anymore.
and obv Oscar has always said how much he learned just from observing Lando as one of the fastest guys on the grid, but also Lando has emphasized how much he has learned from Oscar about mentality and staying true to yourself. so again there wasn't any need for Lando to try and be big brother/mother hen.
but!! you know what Lando got to teach Oscar? and what Oscar had trained for years to be the most apt pupil about?
Lando!
bc we never really got to 'learn' Lando as a person before now unless it was on his streams, his content with Max F or his own social media content. his friendships with the other F1 guys are all a variation of bromance since they all love him - but all of them are based on Lando being the introvert among extroverts and bonding over shared activities and interests. not a lot of Lando personality stuff gets revealed around those guys bc he's Just Baby.
but w Oscar Lando came to realize he could roll whatever Mood he was in at him and Oscar would smile and laugh or make feeble resistance and give in anyway - and Oscar took all of it in. he literally already had a fairly encyclopedic Lando knowledge as we well know now but he just ?? never got bored of watching and learning Lando! whether it's Lando's music blaring through the shared wall or Lando not being able to open things or pronounce words or Lando specifically not liking something or not wanting to do something or Lando wanting Oscar to give a different answer or wanting Oscar to agree with him instead - Oscar smiles and patiently files it away.
which is exactly what Max does with Lando. at some point he clearly realized that the best way to get Lando to open up and trust - not unlike an outdoor cat - was to be part anthologist and part nature documentary narrator. Lando only opens up when he knows he has the space to. he gets so genuinely upset at how often the media or fans won't follow his original meaning or look past awkward wording or misuse his original tone. it's why he said he often loves being around people who will lead the conversation and not put pressure on him to talk.
bc for example, Carlos was only joking when he said that Lando needs to mature or how he'd "scold" Lando for being too silly and not paying attention, but to some people it's used as confirmation that Lando's immature. Daniel loved when he'd get Lando to laugh so hard that Lando couldn't do his to-camera work or require millions of takes, but to some people it's seen as Lando not taking anything seriously. it's so easy to take someone as vulnerable and unedited as Lando and slice out one video or one moment and create a false narrative around him. you can see the times when Lando has slunk away from social media and gone a bit mum or dull in his media work when that happens.
but Max and Oscar are there to act as interpreters for the audience at home! Lando drops off to sleep during a Quadrant shoot? Max explains that this is standard procedure wherever he is. Lando is far too hyper for a challenge and won't let Oscar breathe without giving him a hard time? Oscar laughs and gently ribs him back to let people know that it's all in good fun and Lando isn't actually on a tear. Lando winds Max up mercilessly or accidentally reveals that Max has a gf? Max makes sure everyone knows he's joking when he gets "mad" and later on says how much Lando looks out for him. Lando won't let Oscar make his own choices in a silly F1 quiz? Oscar feigns being hard done by but he also says how good Lando's answers are. they do this all the time with him and we see Lando more vocal and more loudly himself with them bc they translate what he can't.
it clearly isn't easy being someone bursting with about fifty different personality traits at once and just as many passionate interests all vying with dyslexia and hyperactivity mixed with introversion and sometimes crippling shyness. it's very easy to love that person - which is why the entire grid does - but it's not easy to understand them or what they need in any given moment.
so I feel like that's what we've gotten out of the Lando/Oscar dynamic that we haven't seen before with Carlos or Daniel. Oscar isn't ever going to be a big personality and he's self-described as "low frequency" - he won't be winding Lando up for fun or bringing energy that makes Lando bounce off the walls. he's also found Lando fascinating almost from his first year moving to the UK. so as fans we love seeing Lando get to have a teammate who loves the business of observing Lando - but we also love getting to see so much more of Lando as a result if that makes sense??

one thing i love about max verstappen is that he does not give a fuck about fame. he sees his own fame as an annoyance and doesn’t seem to care about anyone else being famous either. it was so funny when the whole grid was asked about which celebrity they were excited about that they’ve met because of formula 1 and everyone was fanboying hard while max simply answered coldly: "no one."

Wait does George actually have daddy issues?
Yeahhhhhh kinda. It’s not jos verstappen weapons grade abuse but the stories that have been shared about George’s dad sort of.. lambasting him for spending time with friends and being a normal kid are not fun to read. It echos still in how George still talks about not feeling like he got to be a regular young person.
George has also shared that he didn’t really feel like he got on with his dad until he became an F1 driver because the pressure his dad was under working two jobs to support his career meant he wasn’t home much and was strict and unimpressed with George if he wasn’t focused entirely on improving his driving. It’s been implied there wasn’t much comforting going on.
Another driver has also talked before about how he and George didn’t get on solely because he didn’t like georges dad and found him to be angry and mean. So take that as you will. I can also recommend this longer post about georges dad
It’s clear that money put a lot of pressure on the family and thus George. Hell the whole reason George went to Toto was because his dad told him he either needed to secure sponsorships or it was his last year racing because they couldn’t afford it anymore. So in a way while I critique Toto for a lot, he clearly came into George’s life at a time he was feeling most in need of support and under pressure from his actual dad.
While George has said things are improving now, they also don’t exactly go to a lot of George’s races and still seem fairly distant. Georges stories about his dad mirror a lot of how Lewis used to talk about his dad, only they’ve massively improved their relationship since Lewis got into F1 and Lewis has talked at length how it was because his dad went from his coach to just, his dad.
I don’t know if it’ll be the same for George, the one interview Steve gave about George was a bit.. he immediately brings up a story from when George was a hot headed teenager to categorise him as bull headed and kinda talk him down. He seems hard to impress, but I have my own emotionally constipated strict British dad so I’m not really shocked.

(thanks to @mostlymaudlin for the template!) pls forgive my scrawl!!
i read soooo many good fics this year so to narrow it down i have limited myself to a) fics that were written in 2023 (i think) and b) F1 fics. i could’ve done a whole directory for each category tbh, and i’m sure i’ve forgotten something really obvious, but these were the ones that came to mind first. links and my commentary under the cut!
1. fic that made me laugh: adagio by debrief (lando/oscar, ballet AU. debrief is sooo good at these gorgeous, funny landoscar AUs, and the lando in this fic is so effervescent, camp and ridiculous. so many great laugh out loud bits.)
2. fic that made me cry: ode to a conversation stuck in your throat by prettyrotten @prettydangrotten (alex/george, miscommunication at its finest. so much incredible, layered emotion in this one, a real masterclass in how to use sex scenes to portray emotions instead of dialogue too.)
3. fic that gave me a story hangover: the fire is slowly dying by peachbellinis @strawberry-daiquiris (mark/oscar, oughhhh. never heard the term story hangover before today but that’s exactly what this fic gave me. eyewateringly sexy, leans into the age gap and the generally rancid vibes, evil temptress oscar rights. i was fucking useless for the rest of the day after reading it because it’s so vividly drawn and claustrophobic in the best possible way. ate my brain.)
4. fic i want to discuss book club style: grand theft august by chelem @chelemlem (lando/oscar, gorgeous canon compliant slowburn. the fic that gave me the landoscar brain rot for real. i basically only started writing ‘monday’ because i adored this so much; it’s essentially a tribute act. so many glorious little details that i would love to pick apart at a forensic level.)
5. fic that got me a lil flustered: side by side in orbit by glasscushion @glasscushion (lando/oscar/max f, spiky weird vibes cuckolding threesome. also a strong contender for category 1 because the max dialogue is deadly precise and hilarious, but lando all fucked out and high off being watched?? does me in every time i even think about it. insane.)
6. fic by one of my fave authors: practice makes perfect by charlotte_stant @boxboxlewis (alex/george, first time/practising sex. as always, insanely good, sharp dialogue; so elegant at sentence level, no wasted words. funny, sad, sexy. whenever i read her fics i’m taking notes because there’s always something to learn.)
7. fic i reread more than once: break my rules by venerat (lando/oscar, mile high club with crafty bastard lando and out of his depth but loving it oscar. i’ve read most of venerat’s fics multiple times this year tbh, but this was another formative landoscar fic for me so i’ve singled it out here.)
8. fic i sent to everyone i know: trade offer by chelem @chelemlem (girl!lando/oscar rule 63, they can’t fuck for semi-spurious reasons. SWELTERINGLY hot. entire lines from this fic live rent free in my head. i’ve said this before but this is one of my top, if not my favourite ever, rule 63 fic.)
9. fic that made me fall in love with an author: recreate the sun by glasscushion @glasscushion (lando/oscar with background mark/oscar, stoned sex. oughhh. such a sleazy, sexy fic. i kind of came to landoscar via mark/oscar fics and this one was a bit of a gateway drug (sorry). grotty spiritual teenager lando my beloved, horny sloth stoner oscar my beloved, viscerally hot descriptions of stoned sex my beloved. makes me want to take an edible to get the full effect.)
so so many i didn’t have room to mention argh. i bookmarked 10 pages this year!!

bit fandom meta but my favourite thing is how there are like groups of people who comment on fics. like each pairing has a dedicated cheerleader squad who will hype up like all works for that pairing and i love it
(most noticeable for piarles and maxiel i feel like!!)

my favorite hetcedes girl!lewis dynamic would be kind of a continuation of 'desire unfolds' by bestliars where girl!lewis (or louise, elle, etc) also hits the wall of women's racing and is like a role reversal of your wag story. I know non racing lewis au's usually have him (or her in this case) go into music or fashion but I can't imagine early 2000s girl!lewis would know that about herself and wouldn't pursue that in time for it to make sense (i feel like for these wags you had to have become famous in your career before your wag status, or else it won't pan out). The Catholic guilt narrative especially without racing in the way would make it so they got married rather young. Their relationship would still be complex and not perfect because I envision in this au nico would still be racing and have 7 or so championships, not because he wants to but because he has to carry the ambition for both of them (2014,15,16,17,18,19,20 is easy to achieve in the Mercedes dominance when you have no teammate competition). I don't think she would want him to stay home and have a happy family and instead be encouraging him to stay in F1 for as much success as she wished she had. And if they did have kids I still think she would be at every race lol. It could also be interesting to explore how that level of dominance and success would contrast with his personality (as i don't think he would be partying it up with hollywood like lewis did during that era, so he wouldn't be F1's figurehead in the same way lewis is today). Also him equaling Michael's championships after how his relationship with Michael was????
But also, I can't creatively write to save my life so this won't be a thing I write lol. I wish I could tell someone my idea and instantly get a fabulous fic back lmao
I also love your toto idea! I know you said that it would be difficult to do girl!nico/lewis because of how he would feel entitled to end up with her, but I think that entitlement and almost cockiness could be an interesting side of him to explore. Especially when he has all the options of women you could want in front of him but he's still expecting Nico to be his. Could be interesting!
I would personally find that super depressing to write because the constant background information of what we know: lewis is the greatest racer of all time, the 7 titles nico is winning is hers and the only reason she can't and is instead known as his wife is due to her sex. ofc not all fics are supposed to be happy and romantic but there's no happy ending beyond lewis having to accept and have her man vicariously living out her dreams (ergo be discontent of that potential What If life forever). you as a reader would pity lewis the whole time
you do raise a good point that she would be too young to know herself yet to get into fashion/music, although probably later in life with nico's money she'd have access to those avenues.
although the idea that nico is the one who wants to retire and be with his family while lewis is the one who keeps pushing him to renew his contract and bribes him with another baby he won't have time to properly see is kind of interesting.
but it's not my flavour, sometimes the more realistic idea is not the better fic. but I would read it if someone wrote it and did the dynamics right
I personally find it easier to do girl!nico hitting the racing ceiling and being perfectly discontent about it because she has so many safety nets, even as Toto's problematically younger gf where the power is imbalanced, she's still the daughter of a world champion, she's still rich, she still graduated from imperial college. with the hetcedes you proposed lewis married young, there's still that class insecurity, that universe's GOAT chose her because they were childhood friends but now he has all the pick of beautiful women in the world should he want (even if he's 100% loyal), and the discontentment would just be too much.
with girl!Nico hetcedes of "lewis still chooses her" it veers too much into traditional heterosexual romance for my taste. but yeah I'd be down to read it someone else wrote it hahaha, there's just a lot of delicate gender power dynamics to keep in mind when doing a gender swap fic and still have it be compelling. a lot of work!

We all know and love mcc 9 blue bats however I want to hear your opinions on aqua 29 (it's Falsie, Cub, H and Dave Krtzyy, team mostly known from being falses 4th win, Dave's first win since mcc 1, team that got to dodgebolt without anyone in top 10)
Because I love them dearly and I somewhere still have screenshots of me exploding over False and her 1v3
there is just something very sweet to me about them all carrying each other to that dodgebalt by being a great all round team where everyone held their own, and there was not like "one best player" (they all placed between 12th and 21st if I remember correctly) and they won exactly because of that
also I really love False in dodgebolt because it was just a true show why you do not underestimate her. Also her telling H to be quiet was great.
(Can you tell I rewatched her pov of this this week)
Aqua29 is my favourite False pov after Blue9 and genuinely only unmatched by Blue9. Also it’s gonna be a year since Aqua29 and… damn.
You’re so right, I love how none of them were in top 10 and each did what they did. It’s such a finger in the face of people who are like “ohhh the hermits get carried all the time” (esp re: Blue9) and they’re like SURPRISE BITCHES!!!
Aqua29 is like yassified Blue9 to me. Sorry Ren and FruityB. They had a solid storyline, a solid goal, power of friendship, Aqua Blessing, False 1v3, and genuinely just a beautiful narrative that in my limited and biased opinion has been unmatched since then.

Damn Tumblr would be so cool if it was into sport unironically. Yeah, yeah, I love my sportsball jokes too, but sports is awesome to watch, and nerding out over stats is so fun.
Cricket might seem like a hard sport to get into but it's actually great because watching highlights is not only valid but the optimal way of watching cricket. Test cricket is a game of ages played over 5 days, only maniacs sit down and watch it front to back. Also it's a non contact sport, if muscley dudes ramming into each other doesn't interest you.
If you are into muscley dudes ramming into each other, then I recommend Australian Football. (Yes I'm Australian, I know I'm making it obvious) It's incredibly fast paced, features widely mixed skills, is extremely statistically rich and the AFL is an incredibly balanced league, so you can expect your chosen team to go deep into the finals every few years. It might be difficult or expensive to watch overseas but it's quite worth it!
F1 (and broadly all motorsport) is great because it's pretty much all maths. Also there's a Netflix show you can watch, drive to survive is pretty artificial but the sport does have a bit of drama in it.
Those are the sports I'm into right now, but all sports are awesome. Football/Soccer, Baseball, Basketball, US Football are all amazing, and really fun to immerse yourself in. I know I'm not going to convince everyone but I hope someone that sees this finds a new passion!

I may have hyperfixated on Mr. Beige’s statement and spent my day doing some numbers. And, other than the three years 2019-21 where George was in the slowest car on the grid: when has Lando ever beaten George?
Let’s compare their 2018 season where they spent a year in equal machinery. Don’t come at me with “Lando was preparing for F1 already with McLaren!” as if George wasn’t already doing sim and test duties with Mercedes the year before that.
Comparing them at each event: George is ahead of Lando 6 times more often (21 - 15), if we add in championship positions we come to George winning 8 battles (28 - 20). It’s also interesting to know despite leading the championship for 5 rounds, Lando Norris was the third driver to get 200 points. The only reason why he came in 2nd instead of third is because Alex had a horrible Abu Dhabi that year.
George had 2 more podiums (11 - 9), 6 More wins (7 - 1), 3 more fastest laps (4 - 1) and 4 more poles (5 - 1). Despite having more performances outside the points (3 - 2) and more DNFs (3 -2).
If Mr. Beige meant to say Lando is the better driver all that he has going off of that season (where Lando was technically the more experienced driver in the F2 cars) was that Lando has 1 more P2s (4 - 3) and 3 more P3s (4 - 1), which s honestly nothing when you take to notice that even added George has more wins alone than Lando comes out as a winner in this conversation.
Out of the 3 podiums Lando and George shared, George was in front of Lando every time. Please Zac tell us again when and how Lando beat George in equal machinery.
Attached you’ll find the spreadsheet I made for this as well as images of all the George and Lando podiums. (feat a Max Günther win in Silverstone)
