Talking abt that book poll more here so I don't clog up the tags.

I understand a lot of people don't like F451 and I personally think Bradbury excelled in short fiction more so than longer prose (I think it's really obvious F451 was his first novel) but it just had such a compelling language to me when I read it. It's by no means a perfect book, its pacing can be downright awful and I think Mildred was a bit underplayed, but I loved it more than anything else on that list.

The Scarlet Letter was an absolute SLOG to get through when we read it in class. I hated the way it was taught and group discussions were bland as hell but by the second half of the book it really grew on me. It does a better job of symbolism than Gatsby does (albeit SUPER fucking obvious, my god) and the detail of Chillingworth not holding Pearl's father's actions against her was just really memorable to me. I know classics don't exactly have to be well written by todays standards to be considered classics, but TSL still holds up narratively.

TKAM just never really caught on with me. I think my only real, massive issue with it was that Scout was boring and I didn't like reading her perspective or Lee's style of writing. At all. I don't think I'd ever choose to read it again on my own, unlike the ones above.

I don't like Gatsby for completely petty reasons. It sucked to read and it sucked at doing its job. Of course it can be argued otherwise (and you'd be right, it has its merits) but it just wasn't fulfilling in its enjoyment or in its message.

Anyway, my actual favorites from English class were Ros & Guil Are Dead, Catch-22, Slaughterhouse 5, and No Exit.

And Death of a Salesman also just sucked to read. Fences parallels the narrative DoaS sets up in a more compelling way, to me.

This is one of my proudest fics ever. An idea had popped into my head that Crowley would probably really like Fahrenheit 451, because there are so many similarities between his life, and the events of that book. And the idea just wouldn't leave me alone, and this is what was produced. I wrote it last October, and I'm still so proud of it, I had to share it on Tumblr. Also, though it's not canon that Crowley likes F451, Neil Gaiman does, going so far as to writing the introduction in the 50th aniversary publication, which is the copy I own. And personally, my favorite singular books ever written are, F451 and Good Omens, in that order, so for me, this was like a dream come true fic idea! So I really hope you like it, because I absolutely loved writing it!

Hey! So i started reading F451 in class and finished it today!! And just out of curiosity, what are your favorite characters and events?

I think we can all agree on the fact that the lady at the beginning, the one that lets herself burn with the books, is extremely badass and I love her. And i also really like Mildred, even though she’s very much unidimensional & has like one (1) personality trait, it’s so exaggerated that it just makes her an interesting character! Even the way she’s described, I can just imagine her as this doll with big, dull eyes and frizzy hair sticking out every which way. I think she’s unique. I also love Beatty, he’s a very good antagonist. I especially loved the part where he went to Montag’s house to discuss about him going back to work, and how Beatty explained perfectly how the world they live in functions. I mean, you can clearly see that Beatty is an extremely smart man, but he’s either just ok with it all, or so indoctrinated that he genuinely can’t see anything wrong about the situation even when he thinks about it, which is something nobody else in this society does, and so he can offer perfect arguments whenever someone tries to challenge this reality. While I was rooting for Montag throughout the whole book, I think he and Clarisse are a little bit bland ^^; there are much more interesting secondary characters. 

And my favorite events, beside the one I already cited, are when the people from the emergency hospital come to drain Mildred of the pills she took- I can’t remember if they were sleeping pills or anti-depressants idk- it’s such a brutal scene, and it comes so suddenly, it pretty much slapped me in the face. And I’d never read about any machine like that so it was extra interesting. Then, I really liked the part at the beginning ot the second chapter, where Mildred and Montag are trying to read the books, while it’s raining outside. There’s not a specific reason, I just like the image it evokes in my mind. And last but not least, the whole sequence where Montag is running away, the tension was real while I was reading lmao
