The face melting scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark was filmed without CGI.

In order to look the way it did, they used prosthetic heads, and then cooked them with propane heaters. The heaters were slow, and took ten minutes to melt the heads – so they kept the footage and then sped it up afterwards, taking a jumble of seconds in the final cut.
