My favourite written Alex interview is the one from the Telegraph where he had to answer questions via email because he was basically incoherent when he was interviewed after a TLSP show. This last part is so so good
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
IRL Alex would never be able to say any of these things as coherently as he does here so I’m really glad he took the time to write back to the interviewer.
There’s a video interview on YouTube i think it’s with Stijn from Studio Brussels in 2018 where he comments that often people ask him about the lyrics and writing but don’t really want ‘to get into it’ they just want to know the ‘names and addresses’ of whoever they think he’s writing about. I always found that funny because when Martin was interviewing him and Miles in 2016 for FaceCulture Alex gets snarky and jokes that Martin wants to know the names and addresses of the people in the songs. But it’s also a little sad because I get the impression that he really does want to go into it, especially if he can sense the interviewer will actually care to listen and also be patient with him. BASICALLY what I’m trying to say is that Alex actually really likes talking about writing but it’s either that the interviewers aren’t that interested (don’t ask the right questions) or that he literally can’t verbally communicate his thoughts in the way he wants (very relatable). In this interview though he actually really gets into it and the metaphors he uses are so vivid and visual it makes me want to go off on a tangent about the way he translates the images in his head into lyrics (but that’s probably for another day). Honestly wonder how long he’d been developing this metaphor for the relationship between lyrics and melody, but ultimately I’m really grateful that he shared this when he did.
Also this part at the start is so
Tumblr media
I always got the impression from his interviews that Alex ‘rehearses’ or at least meticulously plans what he’s going to say, because he’s an expert at not always answering questions directly but still pushing the conversation forward towards what he actually wants to say. So the whole ‘internal cue cards’ thing makes a lot of sense to me. Sometimes I wish he’d be more spontaneous or he’d do more ‘fun’ interviews, but then I remember that when Jo Whiley did a quick fire round with Alex and Matt, Alex could barely answer any of the questions. So I guess the internal cue cards are a good idea!

DELAIN Announces 2025 North American Tour With XANDRIA
Tumblr media
Melodic synth-metal greats DELAIN continue to grace stages around the world in support of their latest opus, "Dark Waters", out now via Napalm Records. The band is thrilled to announce their return to North American shores with a newly announced headline tour, set to take place in early 2025. The run will also feature support from special guests, symphonic metal patriots and Napalm labelmates XANDRIA, who are touring in support of their latest album, "The Wonders Still Awaiting".
Fans should expect to hear DELAIN and XANDRIA fan favorites, the latest hits, as well as brand new material from both bands during this tour, so don't miss out. Kicking off on March 7 in Phoenix, Arizona, the tour will visit several major cities across North America, ending in Austin, Texas on March 29. Tickets are on sale now. Visit www.delain.nl and get yours before they are gone.
DELAIN's Martijn Westerholt says: "After such a warm welcome and meeting so many amazing fans, performing new music and introducing our new members to the metal masses of North America last year, we are absolutely stoked to return to the United States and Canada to meet again. This time, we're thrilled to share this experience with our special guests and good friends XANDRIA. Each night will be stunning for all. Don't miss this one!"
XANDRIA's Marco Heubaum adds: "We are delighted to come back to the USA and Canada, and even better, with our good friends DELAIN! We are super excited to bring this package to the North American fans! This is going to be amazing!"
DELAIN with support from XANDRIA:
March 07 - Phoenix, AZ @ The Nile March 08 - Los Angeles, CA @ Whisky A Go Go March 09 - Sacramento, CA @ Goldfield Trading Post March 10 - Portland, OR @ The Bossanova Ballroom March 11 - Seattle, WA @ El Corazon March 13 - Salt Lake City, UT @ Metro Music Hall March 14 - Denver, CO @ The Oriental Theater March 16 - Joliet, IL @ The Forge March 17 - Detroit, MI @ The Token Lounge March 19 - Columbus, OH @ The King of Clubs March 20 - Toronto, ON @ Axis March 21 - Montreal, QC @ Fairmount Theatre March 22 - Cambridge, MA @ Middle East March 23 - New York, NY @ The Gramercy Theatre March 24 - Baltimore, MD @ Soundstage March 25 - Jacksonville, NC @ Hooligans March 26 - Atlanta, GA @ Masquerade (Hell) March 28 - Dallas, TX @ Granada Theater March 29 - Austin, TX @ Come and Take It Live
In a recent interview with FaceCulture, DELAIN founder, songwriter and keyboardist Martijn Westerholt spoke about the differences in the singing approach of the band's new frontwoman Diana Leah and that of her predecessor, Charlotte Wessels. He said: "Well, first of all, [Diana's] voice. I like her character. [She has] so much control, so much control… It's also a very friendly voice. And [when I first heard her singing], I could imagine that on DELAIN music. And then I got back the material later, and I was actually astonished and surprised how much it fitted. [Someone said] she has a very similar voice to Charlotte, and partially I totally agree with that; there are some characteristics that are similar. But I also think that people didn't… We have released three singles [with Diana so far], and [people] have not heard her complete capacity in singing. She's very good with soft versus power, [the] contrast [between the two]."
Elaborating on what sets the two vocalists apart, Martijn said: "Charlotte is more rough, which gives Charlotte a lot of character. It's a more rough voice, and that's not a negative thing; no, on the contrary, that gives it a certain quality and character. Diana is more refined. And that makes it different. So I'm totally not saying that, 'Oh, this one is better' or 'That one is better' — no — but it is different. And, of course, indeed, there are also similarities."
DELAIN's first album with Leah, "Dark Waters", arrived in February 2023 via Napalm Records.
In addition to Westerholt and Leah, the band's current lineup includes original guitarist Ronald Landa and drummer Sander Zoer, along with bassist Ludovico Cioffi.
The new DELAIN lineup made its official live debut in August 2022 at the Riverside festival in Aarburg, Switzerland.
Regarding how she joined the long-running Dutch metal act, Leah previously said: "It's really simple, actually. I knew they were looking for a singer so I just left a comment on their Instagram page. So a couple of days later I received an e-mail from Martijn, and we talked a bit about how I could audition and he sent me some material that I could sing on. And the rest is history."
Asked how she decided to sing in a metal band, the 33-year-old Diana said: "Well, I've always wanted to sing in a metal band. It was really my desire to do it. In fact, I did sing in a couple of rock bands, but it wasn't really heavy music, which I loved at the time. It was really hard to find the right people to form a band with and also to get along together and all that. But I've always wanted to be in a metal band. Always."
Leah also talked a bit about her background, saying: "I was born in Romania, in a city called Alba Iulia. It's in the middle of Transylvania. And then I moved to Italy when I was 15, and I lived in Italy for, I think, 10 years or something. And then I moved to Canada, in Ottawa, and I lived there for five years. And then I came back to Italy. And now I currently live in Italy, near Torino, so up north."
In February 2021, Westerholt announced the dissolution of DELAIN's previous lineup. At the time, he explained: "For the last year or so, the collaboration within the band ceased to work as well as it once had. Some of us were no longer happy with the current roles in the band. We all tried very hard to find a solution for over a year, but sadly we were unable to find one. As a result, we will all be going our own ways and pursuing our own endeavors."

WITHIN TEMPTATION's SHARON DEN ADEL Defends Her Right To Express Her Political Views Through Band's Songs
In a new interview with Robin Hignell of FaceCulture, WITHIN TEMPTATION frontwoman Sharon Den Adel was asked if she and her bandmates have gotten any pushback to them voicing their political views in some of their recently released songs, including "Wireless" and the title track of their new album "Bleed Out", which have highlighted such current topics as the war in Ukraine and the suspicious death of Mahsa Amini, an Iranian woman "detained" for not wearing a hijab. She said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): "Yeah. A lot of people said, 'Just shut up and sing. Shut up and play. We're not interested in your view.' But I think that is what music is about. It's about thoughts, about philosophy. It's about so many things, and especially the big topics in the world, because that inspires us. And I think anything that inspires you is your right to talk about. And that's the difference also with living in a democracy. I can say whatever I want to say, within certain limits, of course, but I am free to do so. And that's the difference, instead of living in Iran or Russia or whatever, [where] I would have been in danger by now. And, of course, it's not without danger saying these things, because people can react really heavily and we have noticed that as well. But when you write about it and you have a certain feeling towards it…"
She continued: "We have played so many times in both countries, like Ukraine and Russia, and we met a lot of beautiful people and had a great time in both countries. But the fact that for us, it was so clear that Russia is the aggressor here and felt so sorry for a sovereign country like Ukraine to be attacked like that. And, yeah, it just made no sense to us. And we were very much in shock about it because we never thought after the Second World War, we would ever see a war like this with this magnitude, because, of course, there are more wars going on. We had Sarajevo, of course, but it's not like a superpower like Russia. That's a whole different ballgame. It's very dangerous. And I think he… well, it doesn't stop with the Ukraine. And I don't think we need another country that's gonna be oppressed. We need more democracy everywhere, I think. And thinking of that, hoping that we can support them until the end, because it will only turn worse for everyone if there's more countries like Russia who are oppressing their population. And especially so close to home, because that's a two-and-a-half hour flight from our own airport. It's just the same distance as Barcelona for us. So it's a no-brainer."

My Final Interest of Metal
Tumblr media
As a little kid in late 90s, my first small introduction to metal was listening to Test Drive 5's soundtrack on PS1. Fear Factory, Pitchshifter, Gravity Kills and KMFDM. I wasn't obsessed with it early on, but I liked them.
In 2003, I began to introduce some bands like Motley Crue, Static-X, Element Eighty, Rob Zombie, P.O.D., Papa Roach and Evanescence.
In 2004, I listened to Mudvayne, Ministry (eugh), Slipknot, Hatebreed, Rammstein and Nigthwish.
2005, there's Mastodon, Bullet For My Valentine, Avenged Sevenfold, Disturbed, Celldweller, Korn, Linkin Park, Apocalyptica, Finch and I heard lots of 80s heavy metal bands like Judas Priest, Slayer, Metallica, Iron Maiden, etc.
2006, Atreyu, DragonForce, Marilyn Manson, Deftones, Underoath, Epica, Megadeth, Dio, Valient Thorr, etc.
2007, Shadows Fall, Killswitch Engage, Trivium, In Flames, Ozzy Osbourne's Black Rain, As I Lay Dying and Lacuna Coil, etc.
2008, Thought Industry, Coroner, Anacrusis' Screams and Whispers, Protest The Hero, Opeth, Kalmah, After Forever, Ihsahn, diSEMBOWELMENT, Reverend Bizarre, etc.
2009, August Burns Red's Constellations, Ea's II, CKY, Veil of Maya, Napalm Death, Bring Me The Horizon, Devil Sold His Soul, Liferuiner's No Saints, Hurt's Vol. 1, Family Force 5, A Day To Remember, Return to Exile, Thousand Foot Krutch's Welcome to the Masquerade and so on…
Years were passing by with a bunch of metal bands I was so into back then and I couldn't escape it.
In 2012, I noticed Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth gave up producing metal music in Heritage and he gave his thoughts about metal in FaceCulture interview.
Steven Wilson was not alone on his stance about metal in mid 2000s.
I wish I could have given up metal back in late 2000s or early 2010s, but I was a douchebag to keep me obsessed with metal.
Well, that is until I did stop in 2013 after Atoma's Skylight and Deafheaven's Sunbather.
I moved on back in late 2013.
Whether I heard the metal bands made a new metal album or song in 2014 until this year, they were…
boring.
The last metal album I thought it was so okay lately was Emma Ruth Rundle / Thou's May Our Chambers Be Full.
But still, I'll probably forget it.
Not this post.
At the time I'm writing this, electronic music and darkwave are my current obsession.
Who knows if I made the wrong decision and go back to metal in 2030?
Most likely not. That'd be kinda regressive.
I enjoyed my time to listen to metal music from the 70s to 2013.

Both?! I'm sure 2016 wasn't just a drug induced dream. Things happened that year.//My hot take is they're aware of these bromance rumours and play it as a joke, like that interview with faceculture (I think?) Alex asking the interviewer if what he really wanted to know is "do we bum?" or Alex commenting in another interview that valentine day is reserved to another kind of love when the interviewer is asking what they have prepared for each other. As far as I know is that Alex doesn't really keep his past romantic interests or exs close after the thing is over, but he seemed to enjoy Miles's company during the Dublin concerts
They are literally aware of it because they got asked about it and talked about it in an interview.
Not sure what the bromance thing has to do with Alex's general feelings for Miles and what they do in private. Miles was a friend first and then a potential sex partner second. How Alex treats his girlfriends has nothing to do with Miles.

Video interview with Miles Kane by the Dutch FaceCulture, backstage at Lowlands Festival, 18 August 2018. This time a bit less meme-worthy, “Martin” ;).
Miles Kane speaks about working with Jamie T, the writing process for Coup de Grace, dealing with a break-up, Wrong Side of Life, singing emotional songs live, no holding back, writing with others, tension in the vocal delivery, Lana Del Rey, his love for WWE, Shavambacu, and a lot more.
