Holiday Exchange: General Rules and FAQ

TIMELINE:  Sign-ups open, Discord Opens: 18 October Sign-ups close, everyone must have joined the Discord: 15 November Assignments sent out: 23 November - 26 November Check-in: 9 December - 10 December  Posting Week: Sunday 24th December through Monday 1 January.

RULES FOR PARTICIPATING:  - Must join our Discord for communication - Must tag your recipient in the eventual post  - Must tag this blog in your post so we can keep track of gifts - DM a mod ASAP if you don’t think you’ll get your gift out on time or at all, or you want to withdraw - Must check in at the half-way mark to make sure everything is on-track. -Must request and offer to create around a minimum of three characters. -Any under-18 persons found requesting or offering NSFW content will be banned from this and all future iterations of the exchange. -Because of Tumblr, Ao3 and Discord TOS, you must be 13 to participate.

RULES FOR CREATING:  - Make a good-faith effort to respect creator boundaries - Your gift doesn’t have to contain only requested characters, but it does have to centre on at least one requested character.  - Any shipping must be kept to PG-13 levels or below unless your recipient specifically requested NSFW. Any non-requested NSFW is grounds for a ban from this and all future iterations of the exchange.  -Respect your giftee's DNW. Any gift found to be in violation of a reasonable DNW is grounds for a ban from future iterations of the exchange. - Dark or Violent themes must be tagged appropriately -No AI-created content.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:  - Art (1 drawing, created to a standard you would normally post as “finished”)  - Writing (1k+ words)  - Playlist (2 hour-long playlists)  - Moodboard (2 boards, at least 9 elements each, for a total of at minimum 18 elements between both boards. Speak to mods if that really doesn't work for your designs)  - Web Weaving (1 board of at least 10 elements)

MISC:  - Tag this blog as well, so we can reblog you!  - You will not necessarily be matched with someone who matches your ‘willing to create about’ exactly. The goal is to have multiple matches, but in cases of more obscure requests you might be matched with someone who only has one commonality between your ‘willing to create’ and their wish list. In that case at least you know what to make your gift around pretty quickly. :D  - Please send asks if you need information. If it is something you do not feel comfortable sending in an ask, you can message the head mod at @antimony-medusa​ - If you ask us a question about something that has been already outlined in this post we will not answer!

FAQ:

-I changed my mind about my gift list, I want to add something, what do I do? You can re-do your entry and we will delete the earlier version of any duplicate entries, or you send us an ask (off anon if you want an answer back) to change something (only minor changes using this method, please).

-Is there an Ao3 collection? I want to add my fic to it. There will be! It will be released once assignments are sent out.

-I added my fic to the Ao3 collection, but I can’t see it? The collection is currently set to ‘unrevealed’, so works can be added but won’t be visible before reveal day, so it’s all a surprise.

-I need to contact my recipient, but they have anon off! What do I do? Talk to us, we’ll contact them for you.

- I didn’t save my assignment message and now I’ve forgotten my assignment, what now? Get in contact with us, we’ll resend it. 

-I can’t finish my gift by the deadline, what do I do? You have two options. Option one is to consider if you can still finish it by a couple days or a week or so later, and ask the mods if you can get an extension. We will check with your recipient to see if it’s okay to extend your deadline. Option two is to drop entirely, in which case you tell a mod, and we will assign your gift to a pinch-hitter so your recipient still gets something. In both cases, the important thing is that you get in contact with a mod ( @antimony-medusa is head mod) as soon as possible to figure out a plan.

-If I want to make more than one gift, can I? You can make as many gifts as you'd like! If you really enjoy making gifts, we suggest signing up as a Pinch Hitter in the discord

-I don't celebrate Christmas, can I sign up? This exchange welcomes all holidays (even a complete lack of holidays), and people will have an opportunity to opt in to what events they want represented in their gift, whether that's real-world holidays, imaginary minecraft events, or no holidays at all.

-I'm only a fan of a small server, can I sign up? You are very welcome to sign up even if your fandom doesn't have the most active tag, this is a broad MCYT exchange. We will do our best to match you with someone else who also likes your block people. If your fandom has less than a thousand fics on the archive, we recommend that you try and recruit friends into the exchange too, so you know that there are people who like the same characters as you in the matching pool. We can't absolutely promise to match on smaller characters, but we have run this exchange twice and we haven't had anyone be entirely unmatchable yet, so fingers crossed that continues.

-Is RPF allowed? While MCYT is in a fuzzy space while we're often close to RPF and many of our older works are still tagged with Video Blogging RPF, this is a character-focused exchange. You will not be able to request or offer direct RPF for this exchange.

-Is shipping allowed? Yes. For the comfort of the greatest number of participants, we ask that participants make a good-faith effort to ensure that any shipping is boundary-respecting, but because there is no broad fandom-wide consensus about how that is defined in specific cases (whether it's okay to write beeduo as /r or /p is an obvious case) or between specific fandoms (lifesteal approach to shipping is different from HBG is different from DSMP), the mods will not be policing any specific understanding of boundaries across the event. The event will operate on Don't Like Don't Read, in that everyone will have the chance to opt in for themselves as to if they are comfortable with shipping or NSFW for each specific character they want to work with, and mods will match based on that.

-Is NSFW allowed? Yes, NSFW is permitted as long as it respects creator boundaries, and both sides of the gift exchange are 18+. People will only be matched to others who specifically requested NSFW work. For the comfort of the greatest number of people in the exchange and the mod team, nothing that would warrant the tags Underage, Rape/Noncon, Dubcon, Adult/Minor, or Incest is permitted.

-My person requested characters I don't want to write, and one of them is a ship I don't like. What do I do? You are only expected to create a gift for the characters you matched on. If you offered to create for Grian (shipping allowed), Good times with Scar (shipping allowed) and Docm77 (only gen), and you matched to someone requesting Grian (shipping allowed), Docm77 (shipping allowed) and Keralis (only gen), you are only expected to make a gift with the characters and relationships you matched on, in this case, Grian. If you are entirely uncomfortable with your match, you can tell a mod, and we can take it off your hands and get it pinch-hit. You will still receive a gift.

-If noncon isn't permitted, is non-consentual touching (platonic) allowed? As technically a punch in the face counts as non-consensual touching, and pvp is a classic part of most MCYT canons, we find banning all nonconsensual contact to be unnecessarily restrictive. As long as nonconsensual contact is not sexual in nature, it is permitted, however, it must be tagged for adequately along with any other potentially triggering content.

-Do you allow dark or violent content? Yes. The lore of many mcyt servers includes death games, abuse, cannibalism, murder-for-hire, and other dark or violent themes. However, all potentially triggering content must be tagged for so readers and giftees can make an informed choice to get infolved or not. We would recommend that you not include particularly dark topics unless requested to by your giftee.

-What is a Pinch Hitter? A pinch hitter is a person who saves the day and steps in when the original creator is unable to deliver their work for whatever reason, making a new work on an accelerated timeline. You can sign up to be a Pinch Hitter in the discord.

-What is a DNW? All participants will have the opportunity to fill out a DNW, which stands for Do Not Want. This is anything that has the potential to ruin a gift for you. DNWs must be phrased politely, (so no "No foster aus because they suck and you suck if you like them"), and they must be reasonable, (so no attempting to box someone into a specific gift, i.e. "DNW anything that isn't a space au where Tommy is a dinosaur-hybrid and Tubbo is a ghost bee and they rampage through the living ship named Las Nevadas"), but they can be as petty (disliking specific art styles) or as broad-reaching (no modern aus, no specific ships, no crossovers with specific servers) as you like. Deliberately breaking someone's DNW is grounds for a ban from the exchange.

-When do I have to join the discord? You have the option to join the dicord and hang out as soon as signup starts on October 18, and you must join the discord so we can communicate with you by November 15. Anyone not in the discord once we start matching will have their sign-ups deleted.

-Is the discord a social server? Can I expect game nights? The discord is primarily an event server, we are not going to be hosting events. We will have a directory of other social servers, if you want to take a conversation started in the discord into a more convivial space.

-What's a check-in and how do they work? Check-ins are there to make sure everyone is on track to finish their piece in time, and to communicate any issues with the mods! If you know that you won’t be able to check in on a specific date (lack of internet, etc), please contact the mods in advance.

-What if I need to drop out? It is your responsibility to communicate with us if you need to drop out of the event for any reason, and we do need that communication. We know that life is no respecter of fic and art deadlines, so no hard feelings if something happens. However, we would hate for anyone to end up having no gift, so please think about this if you are thinking of dropping out close to reveals. Please inform us in advance if you must drop out or think you will not be able to complete your gift on time. Dropping out after the last check-in without informing the mods will result in not being permitted to take part in further events run by this mod team.

This year's Johnica Week will be a bit shorter, only four days, in order to keep entries more collected, avoid burnout for those faithful creators who want to challenge themselves and join everyday, and for everyone who loves to read fics but has less time on their hands. The event will start on Sunday 15th January and end on Wednesday 18th January, aka John and Veronica's 48th wedding anniversary!

The Theme 📚 

You’ve read it right, this year Johnica Week has a theme, linked to the 46th wedding anniversary, that is BOOKS. Like all the prompts, it’s up to you to follow the theme or not, consider it just as a general theme that you could build your entries around. I chose some prompts that might fit this theme, that are about books as physical objects or as idea for an alternative worldbuilding.

These prompts are simply suggestions for the event, you can choose one, mix them together, follow them or not, be creative with the prompts or do something completely different! That’s up to you 😊 For each day I chose a situation that revolves around books, an undergoing theme, a literary genre and a type of Alternative Universe you can choose among.

💚 Day 1 - Sunday 15th

SITUATION: Transported from real life to a book’s world and living an adventure there/meeting the main characters. (Suggestions: Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, etc.) Note: not as an AU, but more on the idea of "real John and Veronica live an adventure in a book" as themselves.

GENRE: Action

AU: Superheroes/Superpowers (“Superheroes with Superproblems” comic book, Fantasy or Sci-Fi, Dystopian, Fantasy, Cyberpunk, etc.)

SITUATION: Bonding thanks to a special book.

Day 1, 1st of August - Favourite Comic Era

Wanda is a character with a history spanning over almost 70 years, with lots to choose from from each decade. Wherever you prefer her on Cap’s Kooky Quartet, her domestic bliss in Vision and the Scarlet Witch or her rebooted life in Scarlet Witch v2, this is a time to show appreciation for your favourite decade in Wanda’s life.

Day 2, 2nd of August - Favourite Relationship

Wanda has had lots of friends, family and lovers over the years, and this is the time to show your love for your favourite relationship of hers! Between her twin brother Pietro, her various parental figures, her well known marriage to The Vision, her blossoming relationship with Jericho Drumm, her various friendships with the likes of Janet Van Dyne, Steve Rogers and Julia Carpenter, or her two sons Tommy & Billy there are plenty of interesting and dynamic relationships to explore with Wanda!

Day 3, 3rd of August - Favourite Colour

She’s the Scarlet Witch, but what other colours do you like with Wanda? Pink, yellow, green or others, there’s plenty of colours that Wanda has appeared in over the years other than the classic Scarlet. Wherever it’s her old faithful or another colour you like with the Scarlet Witch this allows to show appreciation for your favourite colour of Wanda’s.

Day 4, 4th of August - Favourite Headcanon

With so many conflicting portrayals & retcons of Wanda plenty of people have headcanons about her, wherever it be on her powers, her history, her parentage, her journey with mental illness, her sexuality, etc. This day is perfect to explore your favourite non-canon ideas on Wanda, from the mundane to the epic.

Day 5, 5th of August - Favourite Team

She’s been part of and even lead many teams, and this day allows for you to explore & show your love for your favourite team that Wanda’s been a member of. From the early days on the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants to her long history with the Avengers to leading Force Works and being a member of both the West Coast Avengers and the Avengers Unity Squad, or even her brief moments with the Defenders there are plenty of teams to love with Wanda.

Day 6, 6th of August - Favourite Costume

Wanda’s had a lot of costumes over the years, from her original wimple and cape to her Force Works dress to her Kevin Wada gothic-inspired costume from Scarlet Witch V2. Perhaps there’s a certain aspect of her costume that you want to showcase, like her many headdresses or her long flowing capes. Whatever it is, this day is the time to focus on one of Wanda’s many costumes and outfits that she’s had.

Day 7, 7th of August - Free Day!

What it says on the tin! You can do absolutely anything you want on this day, you can use it to showcase another relationship or costume etc of Wanda’s, or you can do something completely your own, like focusing on an alternate universe, making an AU of some kind, focusing on your favourite power set, whatever you want you can include it on this day!

Welcome To Marvel Undercover: Trope Wars

Marvel Undercover is a prompt based anonymous fest for works inside the Marvel universe. This year’s theme is: Trope Wars! We will poll to find the top two tropes and then have an open call for prompts from the winning tropes. Participants will then choose a prompt and create based on that prompt. Submissions will be posted anonymously on AO3 until final reveals at the end of the fest.

How It Works

We all have our favorite fandom tropes and themes. For this round of MU, we'll have the top two tropes, chosen by you, battle it out for dominance. Vote for your favorite tropes here, and at the end of the voting period, we'll announce the top two winners.

During the prompting period, you can submit prompts that fit either trope, and you may create for any prompt on either trope's prompting list. At the end of the event, whichever trope winds up with the most creations will be crowned the ultimate trope champion.

Submitting a prompt doesn’t obligate you to create anything for the fest (although that is very much encouraged!) and you may submit as many prompts as you like.

Claiming

Claiming opens on Monday 13 September, and will remain open until Sunday 24 October. Claims will be first come, first serve through Google Forms.

Each prompt may be claimed once for fic, once for art, and once for podfic. You may only claim one prompt at a time, but once you’ve completed a prompt you are welcome to come back and claim another.

Posting

Once posting begins, you can submit your creation to our AO3 Collection, which is set to unrevealed and anonymous. If you need assistance hosting artwork or posting to AO3, the mods will be happy to help. Submissions will remain anonymous throughout the duration of the event. A master list for the fest will be created and posted at the conclusion of the fest, when the creator’s identities are revealed.

Minimums

There is a minimum of 1,000 words for fics, and equal effort for art or podfic. Art may be traditional, edits, moodboards, etc. If you have an idea and aren’t sure about whether it fits, feel free to ask!

Content & Conduct

Submissions can be of any rating. All submissions must be tagged appropriately and thoroughly.

Please be mindful of portraying marginalized communities respectfully. This page from Writing With Color has a list of blogs and resources that discuss diversity in writing. Any prompts or creations submitted in bad faith, or that actively promote racism, transphobia, homophobia, etc. will not be accepted.

Chapter One

Even as a child, Stephen Strange had stood apart from his contemporaries, reading an average of two grade levels beyond his age, and earning straight A’s on every report card as though it were the easiest thing in the world.  But that hadn’t made a world of difference to his father, who always stressed that the most important lessons his sons and daughter needed to learn were in the school of hard knocks, and in the reality of their life as farmer’s children, rather than in any classroom.  He made them responsible from their earliest ages for chores around the farm, and as they grew from primary school to middle school and then to high school, he insisted that their chores always came before homework.  “You’re on my time, when you get off that school bus,” he reminded them often enough, “You can do your homework on your own time, after finishing your tasks and having supper with the family.”

Therefore, it wouldn’t have surprised a soul that Stephen was often eager to make an escape from such drudgery into a world of imagination, fueled by books that told of exotic lives and circumstances playing out as distantly as could be from his family’s Nebraska farm.  On the last day of school before Thanksgiving break, the gangly, precocious sixth-grader checked out a slew of books from the school library, planning to read his way through the lot of them in what free time he might have, hoping to complete them all by Sunday evening.  But he only managed to get through one—and that one spoke to him on such an elemental level, that his vision of what his future could hold was drastically changed for the better.

Of course, he’d seen the Disney film on videotape several times—it was one of his sister Donna’s favorite cartoons, so he was vaguely familiar with the story of King Arthur’s coming of age and into his throne.  This particular copy of the book had cover art that intrigued him; a boy in silhouette drawing the mysterious sword in a nighttime forest, with dazzling sparks of color denoting the unexpected magic that flowed from the boy’s hands.  This was nothing like the childish looking line drawings and primary colors that marked the Disney version—there was adventure there, discovered by a simple boy whose life had seemed to be leading him to a simple, unremarkable future as a farmer on his adopted father’s estate.  Wart was a boy just like Stephen—always being told what to do, always being told what his place in life was certain to be—and yet he had broken free most unexpectedly, and a destiny undreamed of was catapulting him forward towards excitement and tremendous purpose.  It was exactly the sort of thing an 11-year-old boy with a vast imagination and keen intellect would dream of for himself.

Stephen read that book four times over during that Thanksgiving weekend, and never regretted for a moment all those other books that sat unopened in his backpack, to be returned unread to school on Monday morning.  He felt he had found an echo of himself in young Wart and he wished with all his might for a Merlin to find him, and teach him, and lead him to a destiny beyond the ordinary one his father had planned for him.  For the first time in his young life, Stephen felt encouraged enough to hope that he could make of his future what he wanted.

Inevitably, over the course of college and medical school, through the many years of his residency and then his ascendency to the upper echelon of his field of medicine, Stephen had forgotten that striking childhood revelation---and even that it had been his impetus to take the first steps towards building the life he envisioned for himself.  He was already a Sanctum Master with vast experience in innumerable aspects of the Mystic Arts before that vital memory resurfaced---stunning him when he realized he had forgotten it altogether, while pleasing him with the discovery that there might be some degree of truth behind that grand, mythical tale.

And it all started with an urgent request for help from the Master of the London Sanctum…

Chapter Two

As was so often the case, Wong was already waiting for him when he stepped back through the access way from the London Sanctum---reminding Stephen once again of his fellow Master’s impeccable sense of timing.  Skipping the preliminaries as usual, Wong simply asked outright, “So---how did it go?”

Stymied by the puzzled presented to him in London, Strange could only shake his head.  “I’m afraid I wasn’t much help to Master Banerjee---at least for the time being.”

Wong fell in step beside Stephen as he strode to the grand staircase, “Meaning you have no idea what the creature is or where it came from?”

“Well, from the few eyewitness accounts they’ve managed to gather---and from the evidence left in its wake---I’d say it’s definitely not native to Earth.”

“That doesn’t rule much out, Stephen.”

Strange grunted, while taking the stairs two at a time, making a beeline for the main library of the New York Sanctum.  “Of that I am keenly aware, Wong---but thanks for reminding me anyway…” Though he had only logged a few years’ service as a Master of the Mystic Arts, Stephen’s experience was far deeper and much farther reaching than any of his peers---for his judicious use of the Eye of Agamotto had allowed him decades and more for study, training, and exploration across even the most distant reaches of this reality.  Making him the go-to source when any in the Mystic Fraternity faced a threat unknown in the annals of their collective experience.

Alisha Banerjee, Master of the London Sanctum, had contacted him with the urgent request to assist in discovering the cause of a rash of animal mutilations that had followed a two-week long, meandering path from Salisbury Plain to the sheep farms of South Cadbury, in Somerset County.  In the last two days, humans had become prey as well, their grisly remains following the same patterns as those of the missing goats, sheep, and cattle---remnants of desiccated flesh and bone found in a trail of corrosive slime that ended at the edges of rivers, ponds, and lakes.

Given the timing, Stephen had quickly concurred with Alisha that the beginning of the disappearances and mutilations coincided with a series of earthquake-like events that had plagued the countryside surrounding Stonehenge. Although the violent seismic activity had seemed to emanate from the very center of the ancient stone circle---with onsite tour guides and tourists alike describing quakes that had felt to them like at least a magnitude six on the Richter scale---there was no physical or scientific evidence to explain the disturbances.  Not a stone had been toppled, let alone even minutely displaced, while none of the British Geological Survey centers could begin to offer a scientific explanation, for their instruments showed no quakes, no shakes, and not even a vague tremor at the time of the occurrences.  Meaning the cause had to be beyond the understanding of human science.

Fascinated by the mysterious details---and ever ready to provide protection for the unknowing, vulnerable people in the creature’s vicinity---Stephen had promised Banerjee to do his utmost to find both the cause of the danger, and a solution.   He decided his best resource to begin with, would be the text and scrolls that contained millennia of collected knowledge of the countless generations of sorcerers that came before him.

Stephen and Wong stood at the library entrance, as Stephen contemplated which sources might shed some light on the dire mystery facing him.  Cloak had flown off, knowing full well that it’s Master would be immersed in some intense research for at least the next few hours.  “But where to begin,” Stephen had muttered, hands on hips as his eyes raked across the rows and rows of books. He turned to Wong, “Any suggestions?”

Wong considered the question for a moment.  “Well, it might help if you told me everything we know about the creature so far.”

“Right.”  Luckily, Stephen’s memory was exceptional, so that he was easily able to recall what he’d been told about the beast.  “No one has been close enough to it to get more than an impression---fortunately for them, or they might have made a handy snack for it.  Unfortunately for us, because the descriptions sounds…pretty outrageous.”

“How?”

“As seen from a safe distance, the consensus seems to be a serpent’s head and neck on the body of some huge, big cat, like a leopard or a lion. Some witnesses claimed it was spotted, so I suppose that’s explains the comparison to a leopard.”  Stephen chewed his lip, trying to picture such an odd combination in his mind’s eye, “One of them said the neck scales gave away gradually to fur.  But instead of the paws of a big cat, it had hooves.  And a long, thick tail with several nasty looking spikes near the end of it.”

Wong looked skeptical, “Sounds like somebody’s bad dream after a trip to the zoo.”

“More like somebody’s acid trip about the zoo,” Stephen suggested with a grin---though Wong didn’t even crack a smile.

“And it leaves a trail of slime…like a snail?

“Slime yes,” Stephen confirmed, “Though snail slime is most often produced to facilitate better locomotion.  I think with this creature, that it is more likely digestive juices from whatever it’s consumed.  The stuff seems to eat through flesh and bone pretty quickly, unless it’s hit with full sunlight; otherwise, it just evaporates in strong daylight.  But most of the sightings have been around dusk, so maybe the creature shies away from the light.  Hmmmm…”

“I know that ‘hmmmm’, Stephen,” Wong interrupted, “It means you’ve got a hunch about something”

“Yeah…maybe…could be…yeah, there was something more.”  He turned to the Master Librarian, “Do we have any books here about really odd lifeforms? Like native and other worldly?”

“We’ve got a few basic texts, but the bulk of that material will be at the library in Kamar-Taj,” Wong told him.  “Why---what are you thinking?”

“A couple of the witnesses whose livestock were taken told Master Banerjee that the creature made a god awful noise.  So bad that they thought their eardrums might rupture.”  Stephen was not so much as discussing this new information as thinking aloud, mulling it over, and looking for a clue that was just out of his reach.  “And one of them did start bleeding from one ear…”

Wong knew his job now was to stoke Stephen’s intellect and draw the answer from his prodigious mind, “So this is something familiar to you?”

“Wellllll,” Stephen hedged, “It’s something vaguely familiar.  A beast out of Arthurian legend.  It was like an…unholy amalgamation of different animals. The…”  Stephen closed his eyes again, reaching for that distant memory from his childhood, “…damn…I haven’t thought of it for decades, for Vishanti’s sake…”  He looked back to Wong, grinning, “I’ll be damned…it was described in Mallory’s Le Morte d’Arthur, and over and over again through the ages since, by whomever took up the tale.  The Questing Beast…”

Wide-eyed, Wong watched his friend, while finally breaking into the smallest smile he could manage, knowing that Stephen had gotten the answer he needed.

“…I read about it in a book series called The Once and Future King when I was just a kid…there was this old knight named Pellinore whose sole mission in life was to hunt the beast down.  He described the sound it made as…,” Stephen turned his head slightly, as though he was hearing the actual sound himself, “…‘like thirty couple hounds a-questing’…basically outrageously loud, like it’s belly was filled with a huge pack of vicious hunting dogs zeroing in on their prey…”

“And that’s what the witnesses in England described?”

“Kinda like, yeah.  The farmers whose livestock were taken, said they were alerted that something was wrong by the noise. One of them described it as being like a rabid pack of dogs on steroids.”  Stephen sighed, reflecting on the impossibility of his sudden insight holding the answers he sought, “Of course, those tales are pure fantasy, based on Roman legends and Celtic myths.  The Questing Beast was never real, just like Arthur and Merlin never really existed.” He shrugged, preparing to dismiss his flight of fancy, “They’re really just composite characters, Wong. Shrouded in folklore, and no more than fables and fairytales.”  

Though he moved towards the book stacks, resolute to find any sort of realistic clue to solving Master Banerjee’s deadly dilemma, Wong was quick to stop his brilliant friend.  “Hold on a moment, Stephen,” he counseled him, “That assumption isn’t entirely accurate…”

“Right,” Stephen scoffed, “And I suppose you’re going to tell me Camelot was real and someday, when England needs him the most, Arthur will return to wield Excalibur again, and set to right all that has been wronged.”

“Actually,” the librarian and fellow Master of the Mystics Arts informed him, enjoying a rare opportunity to leave his friend speechless, “Merlin was entirely real…and he served as Master of the London Sanctum in those days.  It was known as Londinium then—but yes, Merlin was a sorcerer trained in Kamar-Taj.”

Agog, Stephen regarded Wong with a mix of skepticism and surprise clouding his brow.  “You can’t be serious, Wong…this is a joke, right?”

Wong smirked and shook his head, “You should know by now I wouldn’t make light about such a matter, Stephen.  But if you need proof, there are several volumes that are part of The Ancient One’s private collection---it was a time period she was most interested in, and she prided herself on having one of the few surviving copies left of A Complete History of the Mystic Arts in the British Isles, as dictated by Merlin to his apprentice.  I’ve seen it myself…and Merlin himself penned some of the entries.”

“Why am I only finding out about this now,” Stephen exclaimed.

“It’s one of her more esoteric texts,” Wong explained, “I figured you’d get to it when you get to it.”

“Now would be best, Wong, don’t you think?  The sooner, the better, in fact.” Eagerness gleamed in his eyes.   

Wong turned on his heel, and jogged back down the hall to the staircase, calling back as he went, “Just give me ten minutes.  Ten minutes, and I’ll have the books sitting on the desk in your study.”

Stephen rubbed his hands together, a delightful combination of curiosity and anticipation causing the hair on the back of his neck to stand on end. Until just now, he had forgotten the happy hours he’d spent, reading about and imaging what life colored by the magic of a Merlin could be like.  That he was now living such a life was not lost upon him---and that a Merlin had actually existed, doing the same work that he was doing himself every day, was a thrill of knowledge he never would have dreamed.  Regardless if these books give me some answer to Banerjee’s problem or not, he thought, this is one adventure I’m thrilled to be a part of.
