Travel drawing journal - 2010

I started drawing while traveling in 2010. That year I went to Vienna to see Lady Gaga's Fame Monster Ball. It was my second trip to Vienna. I've been the first time, two years before to see Celine Dion. Most of my travels are concert related.

I did several drawings in 2010 but I'm left with only these two. The others are part of a installation I made after I realized that the memories from the first and the second trips to Vienna were merging as I had to pause and think which was which. Theoretically, it should be simple, as the first time I've been with friends and the second time alone.

Nonetheless, when I was looking at the second drawing with the writing, and because it was so colorful, I could swear it was from 2014 when I went to Amsterdam to see Gaga's Artpop. Looking closely at what I wrote though, except for the memory of the girl in the metro station that could be just as well in Amsterdam or Vienna, the others are clearly from Vienna's concert. The opening act band singing "I can't pay my rent but I'm fucking gorgeous" and Gaga saying "don't go out loving me more, but loving yourself more" take me to the Vienna concert atmosphere.

In 2010, I went to Vienna for three days with only 50 euros on me, so I could not do much. That's why I just walked around a lot and stopped to draw. It is the trip when I fell in love with three branches as it was late autumn and all leaves were gone. I loved to draw the trees.

I also went to draw the Votive Church which I like more than the St. Stephen Cathedral as it has more space around it so you are able to admire it because it is surrounded by a green area. It stuck in my head the first time I visited Vienna, and I made a point of going there everytime I visited the city. However, everytime it was closed for repairs, even in 2017 when I went with my friends to a coffee shop nearby from where you could see the spires.

The first drawing, I made somewhere near where I was staying in the south of Vienna. I remember thinking that the suburbs of this town look better than the center of Bucharest. I was also thinking back then that if Bucharest had bike lanes like Vienna, I would dare bike as well. In the meantime, I dared anyway. I also biked in Vienna in 2017, though it wasn't the experience I was expecting...
