Currently obsessed with this late 1800s Victorian silk-and-velvet quilt my mother brought out of storage, which I was scandalized to have never seen before. The colors are startlingly vivid, and the effect is strangely modern. It was likely the work of my second great grandmother, who lived in Eastern Iowa in the last quarter of the 19th century. Not sure if anyone will see this, given that I haven’t been active in quilting discussions, but I’d welcome any info on quilts of this type and period.

My grandma Margaret died when I was five, but I've been thinking a lot about her lately for one specific reason.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was her book: a first edition export hardcover from 1977. Now mine. And I can't help thinking about what a cool person she would have been to talk to, had she lived long enough for me to have a real conversation with her.

More pictures of the heirlooms my Booba gave me! Books that belonged to 3 different male relatives from 1927, 1941, and 1942 respectively. 2 Prayer Shawls and several Tefillin.
The last object is a copy of The Shoah VHS with an interview of my relative Sam Flapan who survived the Holocaust. I don't have a VHS player and have never watched it, but I would like to.

Mum and I have been watching a lot of Downton Abbey lately and I've been admiring Mary and Edith's beautiful pearl necklaces, to the point where I said to mum, "I would like a pearl necklace!"
Mum looked at me and then replied, "Just a minute." And then she went upstairs.
She came back down with two envelopes in hand and gave them to me. I found three fake pearl necklaces inside. I pulled them out and held them up so they glistened in the lamplight. "Wow! Mum, I love them."
"They were my grandmother's - your great-grandmother's - and she always took such good care of them. You can have them now."

Matryoshka Dolls: A Timeless Art Form
This post is another one on art forms from around the world. So far, we have explored Street Art, Mexican Folk Art, Chinese Kites, Japanese origami, the Sand Drawings of Vanuatu, Kintsugi from Japan, and Egyptian and Papyrus paintings. I love getting to visit my creatures after they've settled into their permanent homes!
This is a particularly special one, made from one of my grandmother's old coats after she passed away. All the jewelry was hers, and she made the ice skates and paper beads.
This doll is living at my Uncle's house <3

Graham de Vanily Family in Replay
@tallwriter Nice to see you again. It's been a minute since you've asked me a question like this again, although my ask box still eats it. I'm PRETTY sure you're shadow banned at this point. Sorry about the delay. I've been dealing with physical and mental health problems recently. Anyways, so tallwriter asked what secrets do the Graham de Vanily Family have in Replay. So, minor spoilers ahead
The Graham de Vanily families participated in the eradication of several magical families during WWII and theft of any and all spells. This allowed them to gain a lot of power and ingluence in the magical world and severely undercut any rivals. Although at the time they were only a moderately powerful family, their ability to perform a lot of political manuevers and stay on top at the expense of other families put them at a huge advantage.
The Rings of the Graham de Vanily are artefacts traditionally worn by the head of the family. This means that technically Emilie and Gabriel are the head of the family, and Adrien is the heir. However, due to interfamily drama, Amelie has been taking the role of the head of the family and has been training Felix to be the heir. As such, Felix has been trained in what would traditionally be Adrien's duties, and is seen as heir in all but name. Yet, names and symbols have power, power that Felix is all too eager to grab. 3. Felix and Amelie both suspect Gabriel of having murdered Emilie. Although they cannot prove it, given the chance, they WILL try to collect enough evidence to file a wrongful death lawsuit and take custody of Adrien. This is Amelie's main goal, as it will solidify her position as head of the family (seeing as she'd now be the mother of the heir) without any chance of being accused of theft, remove Gabriel's influence from the family, get Adrien, and complete her revenge. Furthermore, a successful wrong death lawsuit will be enough to allow her to pressure a criminal prosecution of Gabriel and put him behind bars, perhaps even getting her a confession and possession of her beloved twin's body.

i come from a family full of fibercrafters. this little afghan was made by one of my great aunts for my mom when mom was in college. it later became part of my childhood bedding, then got reabsorbed in the shared family blanket pile (which ive also since contributed to)
now that it's back in my hands, i wanna make a piece w/ the same colors, stitches, & stripes, but in my own cacophonous style
(hell, that could be a good ongoing project)

The Handmade Tablecloth: A 1916 Immigration Story
Every family has some tales when it comes to history and the lineage that connects us to ancestors who lived a long time ago. If we are lucky, they are long-winded stories full of color and detail and a relatable sentimentality that can carry our imaginations far across cities and centuries connecting us to relatives we never met. Other times, there are family histories that are just one-liners.…
