BELOVED DR. PATRICIA NEWTON~❤️🖤💚
We pour libation for Dr. Patricia A. Newton, an African-centered psychiatrist, traditionalist, elder, & our dear sister in honor of her passing and her life. Her spirit will live on eternally through her contributions to getting our people’s minds right.
About Dr. Patricia A. Newton
Dr. Patricia A. Newton was an internationally acclaimed psychiatrist, thought leader, scholar, lecturer, published author, pioneer, and traditional Ghanaian Royal. Above all, she was a community elder, a wife, and a friend. We honor her, her family, and her life in this space.
Philosophies
From a European worldview, the fields of psychology and psychiatry do not mix. Dr. Patricia Newton stood strong as an African-centered psychiatrist who understood the importance of both psychiatry and psychology. She saw that the trauma Black people face has both environmental and chemical origins.
Most notably, Dr. Patricia Newton founded the Black Psychiatrists of America in Maryland. Through that organization, her writings, appearances, and community outreach, and international collaborations, Dr. Newton redefined how we look a Black psychiatry today.
Organizational Contributions
In 1969, she founded the Black Psychiatrists of America (BPA) to create resources for psychiatrists who recognize that European psychiatry training is inadequate to address the healing that Black people throughout the Diaspora need. She grew that organization into an international organization. She later went on to serve as a President before becoming the CEO & Medical Director serving on its Council of Elders.
Beyond her role, this organization is her legacy and has grown into a hub and a resource for thought leadership in Black psychiatry.
Dr. Patricia Newton in Private Practice
As a behavioral science specialist, Dr. Patricia Newton founded and became the president and medical director of Newton & Associates and President of Newton-Thoth, Inc. According to her bio, her clinical psychiatry focus involved anxiety disorders with special emphasis on PTSD, depression, chronic mental illness, and transcultural psychiatry encompassing the interface of Western and Traditional African healing systems.
Dr. Patricia Newton and African Spirituality
Dr. Patricia Newton also paved the way by integrating African spirituality as a foundational part of Black mental health. She was enstooled as both a queen mother and female king (Divisional Chief) in Ghana, West Africa, where she received the traditional name Nana Dr. Akosua Akyaa. Her positions were not honorary titles. They were actual positions with full rights and entitlements that make her an Ashanti Royal.
She pioneered work with traditional healers domestically in the US and internationally in Africa, South America, and Brazil. In her work internationally, she engaged psychiatrists and other wellness professionals in Africa, South America, the Caribbean. Through those interactions, she pioneered techniques for the chronic mentally ill. She also developed cultural competency mental health standards for professionals to help HIV/AIDS.
Education and Accolades
Dr. Patricia A. Newton received her undergraduate degree from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. She received two master’s degrees. Her master’s degree in Molecular Biology is from George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. She earned her master’s degree in Public Health at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health & Hygiene in Baltimore, MD.
Also, according to her bio, she served on the academic faculty for over sixteen years at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine while becoming the first female chairperson of the Department of Psychiatry at Baltimore’s Provident Hospital.
Dr. Newton attended medical school at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO, and her psychiatric training there as well. Additionally, she was one of the first American Psychiatric Association APA/NIMH Fellows as a psychiatric resident that permitted her to attend the inaugural meeting of the BPA’s Transcultural Psychiatry Conference in Haiti in 1979.
Awards and Recognition
Impressively, Dr. Patricia Newton has won many awards and citations, including Essense Magazine’s Woman of the Year in Health & Medicine, Baltimore Magazine’s 100 Most Influential Women in Baltimore, and Towson State University’s Distinguished Black Marylanders.
Moreover, her innovations include culturally competent holistic treatment in chemical dependency and prevention, having her work embraced internationally in Africa, the Caribbean, and in Great Britain with a community-based clinic named in her honor there.
Dr. Mawiyah Kambon, Black Therapy Central co-founder worked closely with Dr. Newton over decades through various collaborations, organizational interactions, and at overlapping speaking engagements. Dr. Kambon will be doing a special tribute to her on an upcoming episode of the Black Therapy Central Show. We will keep you posted on the details.

Autism and Socio-Emotional Development
Guidance from ABA Therapy Experts in St. Louis, MO
Human beings across ages, cultures, and geographies typically experience six basic emotions: happiness, fear, anger, sadness, surprise, and disgust. These basic emotions start developing naturally from birth. Over time, based on individual experiences, other more complex emotions, such as trust, pride, guilt, shame, embarrassment, or contempt also develop naturally.
However, children or adults diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often have difficulty in recognizing, showing, or responding to emotions. Whether it is facial expressions, body language, voice modulation, other emotional cues, individuals on the Autism spectrum may find it tough to understand or express their own emotions or read and react to other people’s emotions.
The ABA therapy professionals at AB Spectrum discuss some of the socio-emotional challenges of ASD, along with potential interventions to help the affected individual thrive.
Common Socio-Emotional Challenges in Children with Autism
Autism is a complex neurological condition experienced by almost 1 in 54 children in the US every year. Experts in this field suggest that certain areas of the brain that link to social and emotional functioning are underdeveloped in individuals on the Autism spectrum.
Here is a closer look at some of the ASD-related socio-emotional challenges:
Understanding or Expressing Emotions: Children with Autism may have trouble in reading, interpreting, and responding appropriately to others’ emotions. It may also be tough for them to feel empathy or imitate emotions. For example, a child who does not return a smile or greeting, or does not show concern when someone is upset is not being deliberately rude. They simply do not understand that it is the expected reaction.
Responding to Facial Expressions: Children with ASD may interpret facial expressions differently than neurotypical children. Instead of reading the entire face, they may get fixated on just one part, such as the mouth or eyes, and may have difficulty in recognizing or translating those expressions into feelings or emotions.
Participating in Joint Attention: Joint attention is about two people focusing on each other, while also actively focusing on the same activity, interest, or object together. It requires the ability to gain, maintain, or shift attention based on verbal or non-verbal cues. This ability may be lacking in children with Autism. For example, there may be no eye contact or eye movement when someone points out an item, or no reaction when someone uses a gesture to greet.
Other Emotional and Social Skills: Children with Autism may tend to struggle while participating in turn-taking activities, differentiating their own feelings from those of others, orienting to new people, or understanding others’ intent or perspectives. Since they are unable to understand, express, or respond to emotional or social cues, they may find it difficult to self-regulate their actions or behave in a ‘socially-accepted’ manner. This may cause frustration, anger, and exhaustion, which manifests itself in the form of repetitive behaviors, resistance to changes in routine, unprompted negative emotions, unusual attachments to certain objects, or social withdrawal.
Socio-Emotional Support for Children with ASD
Parents, teachers, and caregivers can play an important role in boosting the socio-emotional support for children with Autism. Here are some aspects to consider:
Since children with ASD may not initiate any interaction, parents and caregivers should try to engage with the child several times a day. Play peek-a-boo, make tunnels for the child to crawl through, roll a ball, or invent other fun interactions.
Use definitive phrases to ensure the child’s attention before giving them further instructions. Words such as “Listen, please” may help.
Indulge the child in turn-taking games or activities to encourage synchronization of movements and joint attention.
Point out, label and talk about emotions of self, the child, and others who they interact with. Use drawings, pictures, photographs, or other props in the form of emotion cards to showcase facial expressions and help the child understand what each visual represents.
Use pretend-play activities to improve the child’s willingness and enthusiasm to play with peers or other adults.
Base all types of activities on the child’s specific needs and goals, keep the playtimes short, and use plenty of positive reinforcement techniques.
While parental involvement may help in nurturing socio-emotional development in children with Autism, personalized Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy and other structured interventions are also equally important. While ABA therapy experts can create a customized ABA-based curriculum to treat a wide range of symptoms of ASD, other professionals, such as speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, psychologists, and clinical social workers can also help in addressing the child’s specific challenges.
About Autism and Behavior Spectrum (AB Spectrum)
Specializing in the Reggio Emilia ABA therapy philosophy, the experts at AB Spectrum provide tailor-made ABA therapy throughout St. Louis Missouri. They focus on Natural Environment Training (NET) and use a “Learning through Play” approach to treat individuals with Autism. Their team of qualified and experienced ABA professionals includes Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA) and Registered Behavior Technicians (RBT) who create flexible, high-impact, customized learning plans based on every child’s specific triggers, learning abilities and treatment goals. In addition to in-home therapy services, they offer clinic-based ABA programs through their Autism treatment centers at Chesterfield and St. Charles, Missouri. At AB Spectrum, the goal is to decrease challenging behaviors, build essential skills, and improve the overall quality of life of children with ASD and their families.

Why Did I Go Into Massage Therapy?
I was, well still am, a nerd. Sci-fi, Anime, and Band. Large square glasses, always a book in hand. As a child, one look at me in Gym class and you would laugh......so how in the world did I get into Massage Therapy???
If you try to picture a Massage Therapist, you will probably imagine someone with long hair tied back in a length of fabric, eating a lovely breakfast of organic vegan food, and listening to whale calls on a music player. Or perhaps someone who is doing yoga on some random white sand beach overlooking a peaceful ocean whilst harmonizing with the ebbs of the tides.
Now picture me, if you can, a 5'4" 180lb book nerd who has the athleticism of a bear during January. That doesn't quite match up to the aesthetic, does it? So how did I get here?
I'll let you in on a little secret. Ready? My dream job when I was little: To be like Steve Irwin. Yep, that's right. I wanted to be a Herpetologist. I have a picture of me when I was just 5 years old holding a baby alligator. And one day when I find it in the massive pile of photo albums my mom keeps, I'll attach it to this post.
I was so determined that when I was in 3rd grade (or Primary 4 for non-Americans) I convinced my mom to take me to the local college where there was a Herpetology class on Saturdays. For 5 months every Saturday I would go to the local college and learn about reptiles. And even now I can pull up my transcript and that class will still be on there.....though I think I got more of a participation grade than an actual grade.
Now, let me bring everyone to my generation for a bit. I was born in 1998. Youtube was invented when I was 8. Okay? Everyone with me? Alrighty then.
When I was in 6th grade (I was 11 yrs old. Do the math. I tried seeing what other countries do, but apparently literally everyone does it differently. For me it was my last year in Primary) over Christmas I got a laptop and on the laptop was the Internet. Now I had been on the internet before and my family had a desk top, but now I could have the Internet On.My.Lap.
I could use the laptop in the living room, my bedroom, I even used the landing on the stairs a few times. It was a novelty.
Well as any self respecting 11 year old would do in the year 2009, I went on Youtube and watched Charlie the Unicorn and Llamas With Hats. When I finished with that I watched Dragon Ball Z. Again, reiterating.....I was a nerd starting from a very young age. Well, one day over that glorious Christmas break away from the worries of school as I was on Youtube watching various videos, on the trending page there was a video titled something along the lines of: Strange Asian Chiropractic Must Watch Now.
Obviously click bait, but I was baited and I clicked.
But now the Youtube algorhythm thought they had me after that video and over in the suggested column was a video titled "Relaxing ASMR Swedish Massage"
You can probably guess what I did next.
I clicked.
That video changed and rocked my world. I couldn't believe what I was watching. It felt so right. Like a chunk inside of me was missing and had finally been found.
I kept clicking and watching more and more videos. I subscribed and liked and commented. I learned techniques and styles and lingo.
Just the thought that I could be the reason someone recovered. That someone felt a relief from pain. That I healed someone. I was already someone that loved to be gentle and kind to all people. And I loved being a carer.
I grew warm and my heart became light.
I envisioned a world where I was a Healer and a Fixer. Patching up broken people with Love and Kindness and Hope and Peace.
*************************************************************************
The word Massage has a jaded history. Other than Youtube I had only ever seen it on Disney channel shows where the characters are comically hurt by hot stone therapy. And on the news you only heard about the scandals that drenched the industry in shade.
I grew up in St. Louis, MO and while people are more progressive with each generation, Massage and Eastern Medicine is still trying to build public appeal. To sway opinion that it's not just luxury spa and pamper, but a medical and healing art form.
Living in this environment, even just 10 years ago, I kept my interests closed off and quiet.
I didn't ever really think I could ever go in to the industry and I held those therapists I subscribed to on Youtube on such a pedestal that I never compared myself to them, giving them more of a celebrity status.
Instead I focused on History. Because I was going to be a History Teacher. Or really a teacher in general. I come from a 6 generation line of teachers on my mom's side, I would have been the 7th. I figured that since I love history and that I have a good genetic probability of succeeding, then that's what I should do.
And whilst I was preparing myself for a life of lectures and grading homework, I continued watching videos and practicing moves in the background.
Then the universe stepped in and changed my life forever.
September 1, 2016 I was t-boned on the driver's side of the car. I was taking classes at the local community college on an A+ scholarship and was heading to the local plaza to get food. Suddenly my cars 100 ft down the road, perpendicular to traffic. There's smoke everywhere and this horrible smell. My ears were ringing and I hurt top to bottom. There was an airbag in my face and blood running from my lip. My vision slowly faded to black, but I did not lose consciousness.
We learned later from the experts that looked at my car, that the other guy hit me so hard that my seat detached from the floor of the car ending with the back of my head hitting the windshield. And before you ask, yes I was wearing my seat belt.
I was fully blind the first 8 hours after the wreck. I was worried that I'd be sightless the rest of my life. Eventually though, I regained vision in both eyes, but only color in my right, my left is as you are looking through a sepia filter.
It took me two month's to walk again without aid from a walker, cane, crutch, or brace. Though I still have a brace I use if my knee's acting up.
I ended up having to drop out of school. Or rather.......I flunked out of school. The day after the wreck I was sitting my classes and I continued to stubbornly show up. Let me just say that you do not want to see my report card.
I finished out that year with the only passing grades on my transcript being Band.
The next year I took a gap. Until October. I was sitting in the living room filling out job applications when suddenly I got a text from an unknown number saying: "Are you interested in a career in Massage Therapy?" I replied that I was interested and less than a month later I was working as a receptionist for a Massage Envy location and I had a spot in a school starting in January.
Thanks Universe!!
Since then I have graduated from my program with an "A", passed the MBLEX, and have now been working as a LMT for almost 6 months and it has been amazing!! I have lots of amazing coworkers and I love the clinic environment and I have never felt like have belonged somewhere more than I do now.
And that, guys, gals, and nonbinary pals, is how I, Amanda Shipley, ended up becoming a Massage Therapist.
Peace and Love
Amanda

Treatment in Sight
This large green-coloured mass visible inside a patient’s eye is a uveal melanoma. Arising from the pigmented cells of the eye, such as those in the iris, uveal melanomas are rare but often fatal, killing approximately half of the patients in whom they develop. Such tumours may be treated with surgical removal of the eye or radiation therapy prior to metastasis, but once the cancer has spread, effective treatments are limited. But now scientists have discovered a natural plant compound, derived from a member of the primrose family, that inhibits the growth of uveal melanoma cells in culture. The flower substance binds tightly to an oncogenic – cancer driving – protein in the melanoma cells preventing its activity and, in so doing, either kills the cells or turns them back into apparently normal uveal cells. The next step is to test this primrose compound in animal models of uveal cancer.

Elite Home Health Care Reviews
Elite Home Health Care
Elite Home Health Care is committed to providing personal care that will help your loved one or you live a happier, more independent life. Elite Home Health Care believes family values are important. Our first priority is to provide trustworthy, trained professionals who can perform services that you can trust this Home Health Care.
Senior adults can continue to live independently at home, regardless of whether they are suffering from an injury or illness. This can cover a broad range of services, and often delays the need for long-term nursing home. Home health care can include occupational and speech therapy, skilled nursing, and speech therapy. This may include helping seniors with daily activities such as dressing, bathing, and eating. This can include help with cooking, cleaning, or other housekeeping.
It is crucial to know the differences between home healthcare and home care services. Home health care can include some home care services but it is still medical. Home care services can include housecleaning and chores, while home health care is usually about helping someone recover from an injury or illness. Many home health care professionals can be licensed as therapists, practical nurses, or home health aides.
HCY Program
The HCY Program allows MO HealthNet beneficiaries with special health needs to be able to coordinate and authorize medically required services. It is available from birth through 21. Service coordination involves assessment via home visits and links with services and resources that allow participants to stay safely at home with their families, including skilled nursing visits.
Consumer Directed Services
Consumer Directed Services (CDS), which provides assistance for individuals with disabilities aged 18 or older who can self-direct their care, is available. The Consumer can hire a personal care attendant to help with daily tasks and any other tasks that they are unable to do alone. This allows them to remain independent. The Consumer will hire, select, train, and manage the personal care attendant. Personal hygiene, dressing, grooming and bathing are some of the daily activities. They also need to take care of their housekeeping and meal preparation. Elite Home Health Care is the fiscal agent/provider for the Consumer and handles the Consumer’s payroll.

My Why
This piece has been a long time coming, but life happens and we sometimes get to things at the time we are supposed to get to them (keep reading, you’ll see what I mean). Back in August, I did a thing that I have been wanting to do for a while now, probably on the list for several years to be honest. If you have ever completed a long standing to-do, or goal, you already know how fulfilling and liberating it feels. Like most budding ideas, I didn’t fully know what it would look like or how it would come alive, but I knew my soul was craving it so I needed to scratch the itch.
My vision behind Lifted-Deep has been to, first of all create an uplifting community of women, something like a sisterhood. After questioning myself about why I actually felt this urge, I ended up diving deep, and searching in the place where most answers are found...down down down, beneath the surface, and the superficial layers beneath that, down to the darker, scarier core of consciousness. I did not grow up with a sister, although I always wanted one, I did get a little brother that would try to play with my dolls but to no avail (sorry Roman). I did in-fact have an older cousin, Evelyna, who lived in St Louis, MO but since I was in NYC this felt a world away. I went to visit my family there once and they came to us every so often but this always left me unfulfilled and missing them even more when it was time to say goodbye. Finally, when I was 9 years old, my aunt, uncle and cousins (as well as their dog and cat) made the move to NYC. This was the greatest gift I could have imagined, getting my cousins AND two pets was unreal! I can still recall running through their apartment, the smell of fresh paint, the chatter amongst the adults figuring out what to put where, and feeling exstatic, knowing my life was getting fuller now that they were here.

The year following their move was one of the greatest for me, I had sleepovers with my cousin, spent countless after-school days at their apartment, begging to walk their dog alone (to show my capabilities and earn her trust), listening in on her conversations with friends and boys and even having her tell me the earth-shatering truth about the purpose of pads and tampons!! I felt as if I finally had my big sister, my role model, my all-knowing source for all my pre-teen questions on life... things felt right, perfect, magical.

This story, unfortunatley, does not have a happy ending; about a year after they moved to New York, my cousin was diagnosed with kidney cancer, which at that point had already spread to her lungs. After surgery, chemo therapy and many trips to Boston Children’s hospital, my family declined any further experimental treatment and she died a few grueling, short months later. At the tender age of 11 I don’t think I was able to fully grasp or understand the level of pain and devastation I was feeling or how deeply it would impact me. I felt for that short period of time I had a big sister, somebody to learn from, borrow clothes, share secrets and do all of the “sisterly things” with that I always wanted; then like a living nightmare, it was all taken away. The time we had together was short, but so deeply gratifying and impactful, and I still hold that year so dear to my heart for all of the memories we did make together. Also, as I stated earlier, I have been working on this post for a little while now, and it is finally completed today... totaly unplanned, (and gave me chills as I just realized) the 23rd anniversary of her death; the timing...wow!
I did not mean to write a post on the death of my cousin, but sometimes, we realize that we are driven due to the hard times, the grief, the challenges we have experienced, and they help us reach for and create light; and that's just the raw truth. It builds us into who we are, inspires us and leads us to create something beautiful; sometimes not even knowing why, unless we really decide to inquire and look in. I have to admit that this experience and desire for girl bonding and sisterhood has stayed with me for decades to come, and is likely THE driving force behind this unyielding desire to form the Lifted-Deep community.
So finally, this past August I got my act together and gathered several amazing ladies to join me in creating a space for women to unit, grow, learn and move. A three hour window that they can take for themselves to appreciate all they are while setting intentions and gaining clarity on what’s next. It was fabulous! I am proud, happy and honored that it came together in complete harmony and perfection, (and I do NOT use that word lightly).

After the dust settled I found myself questioning what is next? Dave, my husband was egging me on to start thinking about what this dream of mine could continue to manifest itself into, given some fuel, persistence and passion. I took some time to listen to myself and tap into my intuition (the thing that always has all the answers) and the decision was made to continue to see how we can expand this project, and naturally it felt right to create Lifted-Deep II! This time we will be having some new remarkable speakers, and more of the same format, vibe and mission! It will once again be a virtual space where we will come to move our bodies, lift our souls and grow our knowledge, understanding and wisdom of ourselves. All this in order to continue to evolve, and show up stronger and bigger in all areas of our lives.
This has already been such an incredible opportunity to come together as a community and support each other, and I know it’s only the beginning. Just like last time, if you can’t make it live not to worry! The retreat will be recorded and sent out to via email to all who sign up. Visit www.lifted-deep.com to register and save your spot. It will be taking place on Sunday December 6, 2020 at 12pm ET. This felt like a perfect time to schedule it, because it’s just in time to round out the year, let go of anything that is no longer serving you and step into the next phase, the new year and with some updated and refocused intentions, goals and perspectives. Can’t wait to see you there!
With Gratitude,
Suzanna
