Well, my first week is coming to an end. I moved out of my house of 20 years and hit the road. I went to my aunts and uncles in Arkansas not only to recover but to work on a book that has been five years in the making. I’d made a book for my mother’s side of the family and upon seeing it, naturally, my aunt, who is on my father’s side of the family, wanted one for the Meinels. I started it…

If you know him then you know that he is a stickler for getting actual measurements (I am not) and M writes them in plain language to make it much simpler to follow the recipes than other cookbooks. In our family we believe food should be simple, approachable, and unpretentious. Meals around The Compound and our home aren’t instagram aesthetic, yet I promise, if try the recipes you’ll be glad you did. Generations of recipes that sustained our family all neatly packed in his book with just a touch of his trademark dry humor. It’s more than a cookbook, it also contains a few of our family canning recipes 🙃🙃. He says his next undertaking will be to extract all the canning recipes from the family books of wisdom and letters left behind by the ones who went ahead to Heaven before us. Thank you for loving this story 💕💕💕 @nightowl_library The Addendum by @morelandmelanie I was super excited to see a fourth book in this series. I absolutely loved it and Melanie did a phenomenal job. So many emotions throughout the book and many different POVs. Expect love, laughter, secrets, steam, and tears.  Richard is finally retiring and plans to enjoy his life with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He just has to get through a few more meetings and his daughter Heather's wedding. However, things become more complicated when part of his past throws a huge curveball.  Now, Richard has to adjust to this new change and hope it doesn't cause problems within his family. He has to juggle his life and deal with all the emotions he is feeling as well as focus on his family. With the help of his friends/ blended family by his side, there is nothing he can't overcome.  I truly loved this novel. It drew me in from the very beginning and I couldn't put it down. Extremely well-written, with a rollercoaster of emotions from all the characters. I highly recommend this book and the whole series. You will not be disappointed. My Day with Gong Gong by Sennah Yee, illustr. by Elaine Chen: I've been longing to read this book ever since it came out, and when it finally came in from my library, I was so excited! This is a beautiful, heartwarming and relatable-to-kids story about a Cantonese grandpa and his granddaughter, following them through a day together. At first, the granddaughter is unsure of how they will have fun together, as her Gong Gong speaks Cantonese and she speaks English. She doesn't understand what he's saying as he greets their neighbors, talks with shop owners, and interacts with his close community, and she feels overlooked when he and his friends chuckle about her cuteness when she's "not even trying to be funny!" Her frustration and hunger (she is eager for lunch) come to a head when a bird poops on her as Gong Gong plays chess, and she breaks down. But Gong Gong comes to the rescue, gently cleaning her up and showing her the stuffed monkey and pork buns he got for her - and she realizes he's been seeing her and paying close attention to her all along, and knows just what she needs. She and Gong Gong enjoy the rest of the day in loving companionship, and she even gets more comfortable with speaking some Cantonese. This book filled my heart, and is a wonderful companion to Drawn Together, which I introduced to students last week - but I think this one will be even more relatable to them, as it features a child about their age.
