Week 4 of the Fander Pride Meetup: Acceptance

This is the fourth piece I’ve done for the @fander-pride-meetup. 

I was originally planning to do this piece for the wildcard days next week, however I couldn’t come up with an idea I deemed “worth finishing” for this week, so I moved this ahead of schedule. I don’t know if I’ll be participating in next week’s prompt or not, though. I guess I’ll just have to see.

I actually didn’t plan on this being the day I’d release this, but it just so happens that the day I finish this piece based on acceptance is also the fifth year anniversary of the supreme court ruling in favor of gay marriage, so I guess that’s an upside to this piece being so late.

All questions that run through my head at all times. Why is this so complicated? It all started in 6th grade. Now, I am almost in high school.

Is that even a real title?

I should probably ask someone who knows more about the lgbtq+ community, way more than I do and will ever. Which bugs me but that's what research is for. Anyways, I tried research but did not find anything relevant. Time to ask someone. I hate asking for help. There is this account on a social media I have on my cellular device and they are somewhat dedicated to lgbtq+ things. I messaged them and asked my question and they said it was valid. So that's good.

Now is having two pronouns valid?

After a bit of research, the conclusion I got was, yes.

Week 1 of the Fander Pride Meetup: Realization

So I did remember to do the art for this, and this comic is the first piece I’m doing for the @fander-pride-meetup. 

When I think of when I first realized that I was apart of the LGBTQ+ community, and I tried my best to show that through this comic. It wasn’t much of a slow realization, and although it wasn’t as quick as what is shown above, this is essentially how it happened.

For @fander-pride-meetup 's week 2: coming out! I know it's supposed to be june 8-14 but I don't draw that much and didn't wanna do something last minute ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I decided to show virgil coming out as different things to everyone, except matching the week's theme! I just feel like if I ever came out to people irl, they'd focus on one thing mainly

Week 3 of the Fander Pride Meetup: Hardship

This is the third piece I’ve done for the @fander-pride-meetup, which also happens to be the first non-comic piece I’ve done for it. 

I tried to put a bit more effort into the shading/overall quality because it’s a standalone piece, and the only real reason I did this was because I kept running into a mental block with the prompt for the week, which I still didn’t really follow all that closely. All of the ideas I was coming up with I either didn’t have the willingness to complete or they just seemed like they wouldn’t translate well into a drawing. 

The original prompt was to discuss some form of hardship that’s occurred in regards to one’s identity, but it ended up becoming more of a piece focused on loneliness in general. Besides, the world doesn’t need more hardship right now, so while it’s a more melancholy piece, I hope it allows you to take a bit of a break. God knows we all need one right now.

Week 2 of the Fander Pride Meetup: Coming Out

This is the second piece I’ve done for the @fander-pride-meetup this month, and hopefully this will be the longest comic I have to do, as I spent way too much time on this.

When someone asks how I came out, the first thing I think of is when I came out to my parents and the rush of fear and terror that kept me up at 5:00 in the morning, my mind racing through every scenario of “what ifs” it could come up with, ensuring I would not be able to go back to sleep. 

“What if they aren’t as accepting as they seemed? What if they disowned me for being different? What if my mom, although she was no longer affiliated with the church, still held the belief that being gay was a sin?”

But at the same time, the time I officially came out to my friends at a sleepover comes to mind. All of the times that I’ve come out to kids at school, especially those who come to me for guidance for their own coming outs, and all of the other times, to teachers, to strangers, to relatives.

When I was making this, I tried to convey just that. Because coming out doesn’t happen only once, it happens hundreds if not thousands of times. Sure, coming out to your parents may be the most prevalent moment for some of us, but that’s not the only time either.

So yeah. Some things never change.
